On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Peering Eyes and Multiple Endings
Sliver really should be mandatory viewing for any “Basic Instinct” fan — or any lover of Sharon Stone noirs, for that matter. Stone reunites with “Basic Instinct” screenwriter Joe Eszterhas for this 1993 erotic thriller that feels more like a Brian De Palma-esque satire on the genre itself. Mixed with the paranoia of surveillance technology, the voyeurism of “Body Double,” and the dual campy performances from Billy Baldwin and Tom Berenger as part of a twisted love triangle, “Sliver” is the ‘90s film you’ve never heard of but will adore.

Have you ever been so moved by the impact of the power of cinematic stories that you ended up crying and thinking about the intricate details of a plot long after the film ends? Leonardo DiCaprio’s scene from Inception, the masterpiece by Christopher Nolan, does exactly that, encapsulating an emotional resonance that can still leave many of us affected.
A quick recall: After spending so many years in exile overseas, veteran dream thief Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) finally came clean of murder charges. To make sure he is not still dreaming, Cobb chose to give his totem one last spin as he entered his house.

But as soon as our hero saw the expressions on his children’s faces, he forgot everything and rushed to embrace them. The camera then momentarily lingered on the spinning top, bringing us back to reality.

A few months ago, I wrote an article listing ten movies that – despite being well known – were difficult to find (legally) on any streaming service or even on disc. Those titles ranged from Ron Howard’s Cocoon to movies like Dawn of the Dead (the original). In the comments, many of our readers chimed in with their two cents on films they’ve found difficult to find over the years, so here are a few more challenging-to-find flicks, some of which may surprise you.
Panic Room:
The fact that David Fincher’s Panic Room has never been issued on Blu-ray blows me away. It’s been announced a few times, but a physical release never seems to happen (although you can stream it in HD pretty easily). What gives? You’d think the fact that it has Fincher’s name on it, and stars Jodie Foster, Kristen Stewart, Forest Whitaker,...

Currently in production in Los Angeles, California, the filmmakers are preparing for an AFM premiere.
Written by Tessier, and Michael Edwards, the film is set in a rural town and follows a local sheriff (Edwards), as he pursues a recent homicide case that is seemingly linked to the death of his son five years prior.
“We’re thrilled to have such great actors joining this project,” says Josh Tessier. “The bodies of work between them all speak for themselves, and we know the finished film is going to be a fun ride thanks to their participation.

Any action fan, or even dedicated viewer of Corridor Crew's "Stuntmen React" series, should know the name Scott Adkins. Long before Adkins went all out for his role as German gangster Killa Harkan in "John Wick: Chapter 4," the British stunt performer and actor made a name for himself working as a stuntman for prominent Hong Kong action directors in the early 2000s. He went on to appear in dozens of action movies, from starring opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in four separate films to doubling for Ryan Reynolds' Weapon XI in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." For his role as Gunnery Sergeant Barton Geddes in 2019's "Ip Man 4: The Finale," Adkins said star Donnie Yen — who also faced off against Keanu Reeves in "John Wick: Chapter 4" — requested him for the film by name.
Having remained somewhat of a B-movie action star for most of his career, Adkins is finally starting to get more mainstream recognition.

Hello again, everybody. JoBlo.com here bidding you a big Wahoo welcome to Wtf Happened to This Movie?! That’s right, the Cleveland Indians are well on their way to clinching the Al East – which means the 1989 sports comedy Major League is well on its way to becoming a classic of the genre.
But how did Major League reach this status? How did it become one of the most quotable comedies of the decade? How did the cast pull off pitching, swinging and winning like a professional baseball team? How did it go on to represent Cleveland even though it wasn’t even shot there? And why did they have to make those sequels? Well, let’s go juuuuuust a bit outside to find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!
You might be surprised to know that Major League comes courtesy of the same guy who won an Oscar for writing The Sting.

Stars: Scott Adkins, Waleed Elgadi, Tom Berenger, Meena Rayann, Michael Jai White, Aaron Toney | Written by Jamie Russell | Directed by James Nunn
Not only is One More Shot filmed with the illusion of being one long take like its predecessor 2021’s One Shot, it does something more important. It reunites director James Nunn and writer Jamie Russell with the previous film’s leads, Scott Adkins as Navy Seal Jake Harris and Waleed Elgadi as terrorist Amin Mansur.
Following the events of the first film, Harris is escorting Mansur back to the US where they plan to get him to reveal the whereabouts of a dirty bomb set to explode during the State of the Union Address, which the President, of course, refuses to postpone. For leverage, CIA Agent Marshall has brought Mansur’s pregnant wife Niesha to meet his plane. But they’re not the only ones there to meet the flight.

If you paid any attention to Netflix in late 2023 you may have noticed a couple of films from a franchise you'd probably never heard of hitting the Netflix Top 10. Those movies were "Sniper: Assassin's End" and "Sniper: Ultimate Kill," both of which are part of the remarkably long-running "Sniper" franchise. The series started with 1993's Tom Berenger-led "Sniper" before becoming a direct-to-dvd series with 2002's "Sniper 2." Since then, Sony has churned out a further eight films, all of which have gone straight to home video/streaming.
Berenger starred in the first three films as Master Gunnery Sergeant and sniper extraordinaire Thomas Beckett. While the first movie was met with middling reviews and made around $18 million at the box office, the great Roger Ebert seemed to like it well enough, giving the film three out of five stars and proclaiming it to be "a pleasure to watch," even if it wasn't "a particularly original film.

"You can't stop this. It's too big." Sony Pictures has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller sequel titled One More Shot, which will be out direct-to-video (and on VOD) in a few weeks. This action-packed high-octane thriller continues right where One Shot left off - it's a sequel to that one-long-take movie, using that same real time action gimmick all over again. Following the attack on the black site in Poland, Navy Seal Jake Harris is ordered to escort terrorist suspect Amin Mansur to Washington D.C for interrogation. As they're chased through the airport terminal by ruthless terrorists, Harris will have to use all his battle-honed skills to survive. Scott Adkins returns to star as Harris; he's joined by Michael Jai White, Tom Berenger, Meena Rayann, and Alexis Knapp. This trailer doesn't confirm if it actually is one-long-take again, but the countdown time seems to indicate they're...

Only '90s kids raised in video stores — or, more likely, their dads — will recall Luis Llosa's 1993 military thriller "Sniper" with any clarity. "Sniper" stars Tom Berenger as Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett as he becomes lost in the jungle while trying to complete an assassination mission with a militarily inexperienced sharpshooter played by Billy Zane. The bulk of the film takes place in the woods of Colombia, although it was shot in Australia. The film was well-liked but critics noted that it was pretty generic; Roger Ebert gave "Sniper" three stars, noting that it was competent but lacked originality. The film boasts a 38 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that comes from a mere 13 reviews.
What only fans of "Sniper" might know is that Tom Berenger returned to play Thomas Beckett in Craig R. Baxley's "Sniper 2" in 2002 and P.J. Pesce's "Sniper 3" in 2004. These two sequels...

Exclusive: Los Angeles-based Premiere Entertainment Group has acquired worldwide rights to romantic comedy Plan B, starring Emmy-award winner Jamie Lee (HBO’s Crashing) and Jon Heder.
Premiere Entertainment will launch worldwide sales of the film at the upcoming American Film Market with all territories currently available.
Directed by first-timer Brandon Tamburri, from an original screenplay by Tamburri and Jean Monpere, Plan B follows the story of Piper, a young woman who, against better judgment, decides to sleep with a successful businessman and tells him he’s the father of her unborn baby after a one-night stand with her awkward neighbor leaves her pregnant.
The Joke Zero and Future Proof Films pic is produced by DJ Dodd, Erika Hampson, and Tamburri. Cast also includes Oscar Nominee Tom Berenger, Shannon Elizabeth, and SAG Award Winner Kate Flannery (NBC’s The Office). Rounding out the ensemble cast are Michael Lombardi (FX’s Rescue Me), Subhah Agarwal (HBO’s Westworld), Daniel K. Isaac (Showtime’s Billions), NFL star Vernon Davis, and Danielle Perez (A24’s Dicks: The Musical).
Full Synopsis reads: After a fun night out, rebellious writer Piper (Jamie Lee) drunkenly sleeps with her awkward neighbor, Evan (Jon Heder), and winds up pregnant. When she attempts to tell Evan the news, Piper quickly realizes that he’s not the long-term guy for her and the baby. After receiving news from publishing exec Jane (Kate Flannery) that her dream of a book deal is coming to fruition, she needs to find a stable relationship – and quick. Going against the advice of her best friend Maya (Subhah Agarwal), Piper opts to keep the pregnancy a secret until she can find a more successful guy to sleep with and hopefully start a family.
After a few failed and comical attempts at finding a match, Piper stumbles into Cameron (Michael Lombardi), a financial advisor and regular at the café she works at. Everything appears to be going as planned as Cameron falls for Piper and is ecstatic about the pregnancy. Cameron introduces Piper to his parents Joe (Tom Berenger) and Diane and fends off advances from his flirty boss Anne (Shannon Elizabeth) along the way. While juggling her double life, Piper continues to bump into her neighbor Evan, who has no idea that he is the father of her soon-to-be-born baby. However, Piper’s evil scheme starts to unravel when she starts second-guessing herself, realizing that she could be making the biggest mistake of her life.
Carlos Rincon, SVP of acquisitions at Premiere Entertainment, negotiated the deal with producer DJ Dodd on behalf of Joke Zero and Future Proof Films.
“This film has been a labor of love for me, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Premiere is the perfect partner for us, and I’m excited to be working with them,” Tamburri said.
DJ Dodd, Owner of Future Proof Films, added: “We are very proud of the film we’ve made through the immense hard work of all of our cast and crew. Making this film has been a fun ride, and we can’t wait to introduce it to the world.”...

‘NCIS’ Creators Considered a Lot of A-list Actor to Play Gibbs — From Alec Baldwin to Patrick Swayze
Fans of NCIS eagerly await season 21 updates, as we can’t wait to find out when the beloved series returns. Unfortunately, we don’t anticipate Mark Harmon’s character, Leroy Jethro Gibbs, appearing. Harmon played Gibbs for 19 seasons before calling it quits. And before Harmon got the job, NCIS creators considered A-list stars to play Gibbs.

One of the most beloved movies of 1983 is “The Big Chill,” starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly. Written by Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and directed by Kasdan, the film is an ensemble comedy-drama about a group of former college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of their college friends dies. Released 40 years ago on September 28, 1983, “The Big Chill” did well at the box office, making $56 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. Although NCIS was well-liked from the get-go, not even an elite investigation could have foreseen the show becoming a hit that would span decades and launch a franchise.
It began in spring 2003 as a backdoor pilot for CBS’ sturdy military-law procedural Jag. Co-created by Jag mastermind Donald P. Bellisario (Magnum, P.I., Quantum Leap) and Don McGill (Numbers, CSI), NCIS follows special agents from D.C.’s Naval Criminal Investigative Service, led by Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The show’s initial core cast included Michael Weatherly (Tony Dinozzo), Sasha Alexander (Caitlin Todd), Pauley Perrette (Abby Sciuto) and David McCallum (Ducky Mallard). Twenty years later, the series continues to thrive, as it stands as CBS’ No. 1 broadcast drama for five straight seasons and has launched four spinoffs, with the first international entry, NCIS: Sydney, debuting this fall on the network.

Ed Harris is hoping to contend at the Emmys one last time for the HBO sci-fi series “Westworld,” which signed off last year after four seasons. Based on Michael Crichton‘s 1973 movie of the same name, the show comes from Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan and follows a collection of people indulging themselves at a highly-sophisticated theme park that depicts the wild west and is populated by advanced AI.
The show continued to build on its theme with each season and features some wonderful actors, not least including Harris. Harris plays the Man in Black, a sadistic and brutal man who is determined to find out the secrets of the theme park. In the final seasons, Harris also plays William, who is a host who replaces the original Man in Black. Treat Williams, a long-time character actor and star of the well-loved cult movies Deep Rising and Dead Heat, has died at 71. According to a report via People Magazine, the actor died in a tragic motorcycle accident. His agent, Barry McPherson, told the magazine, “He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right and a car cut him off,” McPherson said, adding, “I’m just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.”
Williams had a long, legendary career on the silver screen. He first broke out in the late seventies in movies like The Eagle Has Landed before earning a Golden Globe nomination for the film adaptation of Hair. He had perhaps his best role in 1981, playing the lead in Sidney Lumet’s Prince of the City (a favorite of ours here at JoBlo), earning a Golden Globe nomination. In the film, he played...

In 2021, Wesley Snipes used an Esquire "What I've Learned" column to make a fascinating confession: "I've got to learn how to be a movie star."
Snipes was 58 at the time of the article's publication, and enjoying a career renaissance due to his portrayal of actor-director D'Urville Martin in Craig Brewster's uproarious "Dolemite Is My Name." Though he'd officially made his comeback as an aging gang leader in Spike Lee's "Chi-Raq" four years prior, Martin was the perfect vehicle through which Snipes could examine the frustration of an ambitious artist shunted from A-list roles to low-aiming exploitation flicks.
Snipes' Martin is a bitter, alcoholic filmmaker trying, and failing miserably, to make nightclub comic Rudy Ray Moore (Eddie Murphy) look like a Blaxploitation action star on par with Richard Roundtree. Martin is a defeated man, and it's hard not to sense Snipes reckoning with the sun setting on his own action-hero stardom.

This past weekend, Wamg attended the annual TCM Film Festival (honestly this writer’s favorite event of the year) and as usual, it did not disappoint! There was a ton of great programming this year, with something for just about everyone.
Opening Night of the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival kicked off with a screening of Rio Bravo (1959) in celebration of Warner Bros.’ 100th anniversary, featuring a conversation with Wbd CEO David Zaslav and The Film Foundation Board members Steven Spielberg and Paul Thomas Anderson about the mission of The Film Foundation as well as Rio Bravo star Angie Dickinson.

If the 14th annual TCM Classic Film Festival had an official focus, it was on the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros., from the opening night premiere selection of a restoration of “Rio Bravo” to a celebration of the 50th anniversary of “The Exorcist.” Almost equal in emphasis, though, by virtue of the guests brought in, was a celebration of the ingenues-turned-leading-ladies of the 1960s, who now represent the elder guard of a Hollywood golden age — Angie Dickinson, Ann-Margret and Shirley Jones.
Dickinson had the highest profile of any star at the festival, being the belle of the ball at the Thursday screening of “Rio Bravo” in the big house at the Tcl Chinese Theatres, where most of the screenings were held. But there was just as much outpouring of affection for Ann-Margret, who turned up for a Q&a (and birthday cake) following “Bye Bye Birdie” on Saturday, and Jones,...

With Creed III hitting movie screens and the spring weather finally about to bring people outside again, everyone begins thinking about sports. What will we play? What will we watch? It’s everyone’s favorite time of the year. The world of sports brings with it some great stories that inspire everyone’s daily life. It’s no surprise that films try to capture that and push the narrative format to give everyone a story they can cheer for.

He dreams of attending Notre Dame college and playing for the team. When his friend dies in an accident, he decides he has to chase his dream, or he may never get a chance. Willem Dafoe has that rare energy as an actor where you could see him playing a benevolent and angelic character just as easily as you could see him playing an outright villain. Since his first screen appearance in 1980 in a background role as a cockfighter in Michael Cimino's troubled epic "Heaven's Gate," Dafoe has racked up close to 150 credits. That's at least three per year -- a far less common rate now that studios no longer have the power to work their stars into the ground. Dafoe's stardom is more akin to the New Hollywood hotshots that emerged in the '60s and '70s (think Henry Fonda or Faye Dunaway) than those celestial bodies of the classic era. He's always prioritized getting deep into a challenging character over playing admirable and attractive heroes.
In those 40-some years, he's played roles as wicked as the lecherous, greased-up gangster Bobby Peru...

We are grateful to Mr. Michael Jai White for taking the time to sit down with us so that we may bring you this interview where we talk about his new film, As Good As Dead, his past projects (like Black Dynamite), and a couple of hints about what he’s been working on and what we can look forward to!
One of the most prolific names in action cinema is Michael Jai White. He made his incredible mark by taking on a complex role in his breakthrough performance as Mike Tyson in the HBO original film, Tyson, which can still be viewed on HBO Max. He was the first and only actor to date to bring the cult comic superhero Spawn to life on the big screen. And today, you can see him in his new action film, in which he stars and wrote, titled As Good As Dead.

It’s time for a new episode of the Horror TV Shows We Miss video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a show that only lasted one season of eight episodes: the Stephen King anthology Nightmares and Dreamscapes (get it Here). The show got its name from a King story collection that contained twenty-four stories, so it definitely could have gone on for at least a couple more seasons… especially since the Nightmare and Dreamscapes show didn’t only feature adaptations of stories from the Nightmares and Dreamscapes book. The first and only season of the series also featured adaptations of King stories from his collections Night Shift and Everything’s Eventual. To find out what we thought of the Nightmares and Dreamscapes TV show, check out the video embedded above!

News of the death of Kirstie Alley, the star of “Cheers,” “Veronica’s Closet,” “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” and, never forget, Carl Reiner’s “Summer School,” shocked the internet on Monday when it was announced by her children True Parker and Lily Parker in a joint statement. “As iconic as she was on screen,” they wrote, “she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”

With 40 years in the business, even if the last few were a bit controversial with her vocal advocacy of the Trump administration, many colleagues wrote fond memories of working with her.
John Travolta, who starred with her in the wildly successful “Look Who’s Talking” trilogy, posted a glamor pic of Alley in her prime, along with a shot of the two of them. In a caption, Travolta wrote, “I know we’ll see each other again.

On December 5, actress Kirstie Alley’s children announced their mother died following a short battle with cancer. Shortly after, Alley’s former costar Ted Danson released a heartfelt statement praising her as “hysterically funny” with a “heart of gold.”
Danson famously played Sam Malone on all 11 seasons of “Cheers,” one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. Alley joined the show in Season 6 as Rebecca Howe, the new owner of the titular bar and a neurotic foil for Sam, as a replacement for the departed female lead Shelley Long. Alley quickly developed her own identity on the series and won an Emmy in 1991 for the role. In his statement, Danson remembered working with her, calling her performance both funny and moving.

Ted Danson, Kelsey Grammer, and Rhea Perlman are remembering their Cheers co-star Kirstie Alley following her death on Monday from cancer.
“I was on a plane today and did something I rarely do. I watched an old episode of Cheers,” Danson who played Sam Malone, said in a statement to Deadline. “It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposes to Kirstie, who keeps saying no, even though she desperately wants to say yes. Kirstie was truly brilliant in it. Her ability to play a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown was both moving and hysterically funny. She made me laugh 30 years ago when she shot that scene, and she made me laugh today just as hard. As I got off the plane, I heard that Kirstie had died. I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children.

Kirstie Alley was a godsend to “Cheers” when she joined the storied NBC sitcom in 1987, famed director- producer James Burrows recalled Monday as he paid tribute to the comedic star.
“She was funny and she was gorgeous. You don’t find those two things together too often,” Burrows told Variety of Alley, who died Dec. 5 at the age of 71 after a battle with cancer. Off camera, she was naturally “bawdy” in a way that endeared her to the comedy community, Burrows recalled.
Alley signed on to “Cheers” at the midpoint of its 11-season run on NBC, from 1982-1993, as the show sought to make the tricky turn from the years of romance between the Sam Malone and Diane Chambers characters played by Ted Danson and Shelley Long. Long’s exit from the show after Season 5 prompted the shakeup that brought in Alley. “She revitalized the show,” Burrows said.
