A federal judge has signaled that Gina Carano’s lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm over her termination from The Mandalorian will be allowed to proceed as the court considers whether the First Amendment allows private companies to sever ties with employees who publicly clash with their values.
U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett on Wednesday pushed back on arguments from Disney lawyer Daniel Petrocelli, who argued that the lawsuit should be dismissed because the company has the “right not to associate with a high-profile performer on a high-profile show who’s imbuing” the Star Wars series with “views it disagrees with” that could turn fans away from the show.
Petrocelli urged the court to find in favor of Disney on its First Amendment defense on dismissal rather than at a later stage of litigation after discovery takes place in which it’s determined whether the case should be allowed to proceed to trial.

Sherri Crichton was on a mission. She was poring over filing cabinets, old computers and scattered notes when she finally found it: a manuscript from her late husband, “Jurassic Park” and “Congo” writer Michael Crichton.
Each thread led her to the next: a draft called “Vulcan,” and other pieces called “The Black Zone” and “Black Agent.”
She knew about a long-gestating volcano project he’d been working on before his death – they’d been to Pompeii on their honeymoon, after all. “He would leave breadcrumbs. We’d be on a hike, and he would talk to me about the formation of lava,” Sherri says over lunch in early June. “His mind was this massive database that was just pumping out great story after great story after great story.”
There was just one problem: this story wasn’t finished. “When I started reading the book, I literally was covered in chills knowing that this is it.

A slew of characters from Marvel movies outside of the MCU might be making their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Deadpool & Wolverine gears up to hit theatres this summer. A myriad of characters have been confirmed to be appearing from the multiverse, and a particular poster of the film might have teased a secret cameo.

Fans have taken to the internet to speculate about who could make an appearance in the film, and given that Deadpool and the X-Men were Fox’s properties. Sony had a slew of parallel properties from Marvel functioning simultaneously, and it is expected that characters from those films are going to make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Elon Musk can huff, post and puff, but looks like he won’t be blowing the OpenAI house down.
Three and a half months after declaring that he was sueing to compel the Sam Altman-led firm he co-founded to stop chasing profits and “return to its mission to develop Agi for the benefit of humanity,” the X owner today withdrew the lawsuit.
No reason was given for dropping the action. However, being that Musk dismissed his own suit without prejudice, the tempestuous billionaire is free to file again if he chooses.
Noticeably, the dismissal comes about 24 hours before a Bay Area judge had set a hearing on OpenAI and Altman’s motion to toss the case out. Musk’s self-dismissal also comes just over 24 hours after the Tesla boss went on a social media rant about Apple bringing OpenAI’s ChatGPT on board as a backup of sorts for...

When the first trailer for Transformers One rolled out (from outer space), the response from fans was mixed. The animation style wasn't what most expected, while Thor star Chris Hemsworth replacing iconic Optimus Prime voice actor Peter Cullen was always going to divide opinions.
Well, a "work-in-progress" cut of the movie was shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival yesterday evening and early word isn't just good, it's overwhelmingly positive.
"It is exactly what it has been described as - an origin story for how two young robots went from being besties to mortal enemies, ultimately known as Optimus Prime and Megatron," The Wrap explains. "The animation style previewed in the early trailer; a kind of painterly, 1980s lunchbox aesthetic, is very much present in the final film — all vibrant colors and shiny surfaces."
The trade describes it as "something joyful, beautifully alive," claiming applause broke out at several points in the movie,...

Scarlett Johansson has been busy moving on from the billion-dollar MCU franchise and has already signed up for two other equally grand and famous franchises, Transformers, and Jurassic World. Slated to helm the upcoming Jurassic World movie, an apparent reboot of the long-running dinosaur saga, the actress has some big boots to fill.
Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff in MCU | Marvel Studios
Previously helmed by her Marvel co-star Chris Pratt, the last outing of Pratt in the dinosaur world was not as well-received. Yet, one thing stood out the most, the primary villain of Jurassic World: Dominion who was, as per fans, fashioned on Apple CEO Tim Cook. And the upcoming flick starring Johansson will face a tough challenge topping the same.

Apple TV+ is offering extended severance.
The hit science-fiction series “Severance” debuted its first image from the second season at the tech giant’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California. It featured the show’s lead, Adam Scott, in an eerie white hallway holding some cerulean balloons, wearing an ID badge, and looking determined.
Production on the second season ended in April. The precise launch date hasn’t been announced, but since further glimpses were included in a “Coming to Apple TV+” video, one can expect it sometime this year.
“Severance” was created by Dan Erickson, and its first season was directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. The show satirizes business culture with a process (called severance!) in which employees have their minds and memories effectively bisected, such that they can’t remember their home life while at work or their work life while at home. Complications ensue!

Chris Hemsworth is having a resurgence after his days as Thor in the MCU. The actor was recently seen in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga as the antagonist Dementus. Hemsworth’s performance as the unhinged warlord in a post-apocalyptic wasteland was universally acclaimed, and many considered it to be the best part of the film.
Hemsworth’s next release of the year will be his animation debut, Transformers: One. The animated film will feature the actor as a younger Optimus Prime, i.e., Orion Pax, along with actors such as Scarlett Johansson, Brian Tyree Henry, Steve Buscemi, and Keegan Michael-Key. The film’s premiere at the Annecy Animation International Film Festival was reportedly received with fanfare.

Erin Kellyman, who appeared in Solo and The Green Knight, is the latest addition the cast of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later.
Filming has already begun on 28 Years Later, a belated sequel to director Danny Boyle’s own series of horror films which began with 28 Days Later in 2002. And, as cameras roll, it’s reported that British actor Erin Kellyman has joined the cast, which already includes Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O’Connell.
It’s currently unknown what role Kellyman will play – but then again, there hasn’t been so much as a logline released for the film as yet. All we currently know is that the screenplay has been co-written by Boyle and Alex Garland (who wrote 28 Days Later) and that Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his role as bicycle courier and viral apocalypse survivor, Jim, last seen in the 2002 original.

“Exactly”
That’s what Elon Musk replied today to a post on X that cast doubt on the integrity of OpenAI after its recent voiceover squabble with Scarlett Johansson. If that had been it, this would have been just another instance of the impulsive billionaire firing off again on the social media platform he’s owned since October 2022.
But with Apple announcing Monday its dive into AI and a partnership with the once again Sam Altman-led organization that Musk co-founded (and in 2018 unsurprisingly fell out with), it was much more than that – at least for now.
In a series of posts, Musk declared that if the Tim Cook-run tech giant links arms with OpenAI, then all their products will be “banned” from X, Tesla, SpaceX, the Boring Company and any other company Musk owns. Dramatically, he added that it would be “an unacceptable security violation” if “Apple integrates OpenAI at the Os level.

An unfinished version of Transformers One was screened at the Annecy Animation Festival earlier today, and the audience gave it a rousing standing ovation. Although those who saw the Transformers One screening have been sworn to silence, the first reactions that have emerged paint a very positive picture.
Director Josh Cooley introduced the movie, saying, “I’m very, very excited. So much talent and nostalgic love has gone into this movie.” He also thanked the team behind the film as the “greatest animators and CG artists in the world,” while also giving a shout-out to Industrial Light & Magic. Turning to the audience, he added, “I want to thank you all for being ‘audience one.’“

Director Josh Cooley took to the stage at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Monday to introduce a packed screening of a work-in-progress version of Transformers One.
“I’ve got that feeling you get when you’re giving a present and you know they’re going to be excited about it,” he said.
He had gauged the mood to a T with the Annecy spectators – most of whom weren’t born when the last Transformers theatrical animated feature film came out in 1986 – going wild for the film.
Transformers One is billed as the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, who are now sworn enemies but were once friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of their native home of Cybertron forever.
Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson lead the star-studded cast, which also features Keegan-Michael Key, Steve Buscemi, Laurence Fishburne and Jon Hamm.

“Nothing lasts forever.” There’s something deeply ironic about that line of dialogue being dropped by Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in only the second Avengers movie from almost 10 years ago. While Johansson’s tenure in the superhero genre is apparently over, with the Oscar-nominated star more recently focusing on films like Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, the MCU is still going strong with the latest whispers about Avengers 5 getting the rumor mills spinning again. Hence one of the reasons Steve Carell and Illumination Entertainment’s new marketing for Despicable Me 4 is so biting.
Carell—who, by the by, was also in Asteroid City—took time to promote not only Despicable Me 4 in a new viral marketing video, but an entire supposed “Mega Minions” shared universe that will outlive us all and see the 22nd century.

We’re getting a look at some of the first footage for Season 2 of both Severance and Silo. It was released today at the 2024 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference as part of a “Coming to Apple TV+” teaser video.
The video opens with the return of Adam Scott’s Mark Scout to Lumen Industries. Director and executive producer Ben Stiller took to Instagram in January to confirm that the Apple TV+ drama series had returned to production after a months-long delay due to the Hollywood strikes.
From creator and writer Dan Erickson and Stiller, Severance stars Scott as Mark Scout, who leads a team at Lumon Industries, whose employees have undergone a severance procedure, which surgically divides their memories between their work and personal lives. This daring experiment in ‘work-life balance’ is called into question as Mark finds himself at the center of an unraveling mystery that will force him to...

Before announcing its long-anticipated entry into artificial intelligence, Apple kicked off its worldwide developer conference (Wwdc) Monday with a plug for Apple TV+, whose fifth anniversary is November 1.
“Before we get into our platforms, let’s talk about Apple TV+,” CEO Tim Cook said. While a crowd had gathered to watch the presentation live, segments featuring Cook and a couple dozen other Apple employees and execs were pre-taped on the company’s Cupertino, CA campus. Cook was shown standing on the solar panels on the roof of headquarters.
As a sizzle reel of upcoming films and series played, Cook noted, “We’re about to launch our most exciting lineup yet, with amazing new originals arriving every week.” (Watch the full reel below.)

There must be cause for celebration at Lumon Industries, as Mark Scout carries balloons through the office’s frightening, fluorescent hallways. Is that his face on them?
“Your innie has already seen this image,” taunted Apple TV+ in a social media post revealing a first look at “Severance” Season 2 featuring Adam Scott. The sci-fi series went into production on Season 2 in October 2022 but was then delayed due to creative disputes and then the dual Hollywood strikes. Filming finally wrapped in April 2024.
“Severance” stars Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry and John Turturro as employees of a shady biotech company who “severs” its employees with a medical procedure, rendering their work and home lives completely separate. The cast also includes Patricia Arquette, Tramell Tillman, Christopher Walken, Jen Tullock, Michael Chernus and Dichen Lachman. The series was created by Dan Erickson and is directed by executive producer Ben Stiller.

The cohosts of The View were stunned during Monday’s show when they spotted a very familiar figure seated in the crowd. Whoopi Goldberg remarked, “You never know what’s going on here at The View. Sometimes you look up and you’re like, ‘Oh, this is really great.’ Then you look over and you’re like ‘Oh snap! There’s Ryan Reynolds!'” Then, the camera cut to Reynolds, who was seated in the crowd alongside his mother. When asked to explain his decision to drop in, Reynolds was more than happy to: “By the way, this is way less stressful than up there,” Reynolds said to start, referencing his rather dramatic appearance on the show in 2011 alongside The Change-Up costar Jason Bateman, when his divorce from Scarlett Johansson was a topic of discussion. “My mom is here visiting her grandkids, and yesterday she said, ‘It’s my dream to go to The View.

Scarlett Johansson called for legislation last month to outlaw AI deepfakes, after OpenAI released a voice chat demo that sounded eerily like her.
Now, one of the AI industry’s leading trade groups is joining that call — urging Congress to pass legislation that would protect artists from the unauthorized use of their likenesses.
Microsoft, which has invested $13 billion in OpenAI, is one of the key members of Bsa Software Alliance. In a policy statement issued on Monday, the trade group called for the creation of a new federal right to prevent misuse of digital replicas.
“Artists should have the right to prevent the unauthorized commercial dissemination of any digital replica that is so realistic that a reasonable observer would believe it is the actual artist’s name, image, likeness or voice,” the group said in a statement.

Marvel Studios, back in 2014, leaped into its most ambitious and cash-guzzling gamble yet as James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy rolled out and played on the big screens. Consisting of a rag-tag group that even had a talking raccoon and a tree life-form, the movie brought about surprising success and kick-started one of the most iconic MCU franchises.
Riding on a unique mix of humor, grit, and a plot that took audiences across every nook and cranny of deep space, the mega project initially set off a bigger quest for landing its actors.

Wes Anderson has reportedly put together another impressive ensemble of actors for his next feature-length film. Entitled The Phoenician Scheme, it’s described as father-daughter espionage tale with a darker tone than some of Anderson’s previous works.
As previously reported Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Bill Murray, and Mia Threapleton will have starring roles in the film. Now, per the German industry website Crew-United, other cast members include Charlotte Gainsbourg, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Tom Hanks, Riz Ahmed, Bryan Cranston, Rupert Friend, and Antonia Desplat.
The Phoenician Scheme recently wrapped filming in Germany and is presumably targeting a 2025 release. It’ll mark Anderson’s follow-up to 2023’s Asteroid City.
Earlier this year, Anderson won his first-ever Academy Award for the Roald Dahl short film, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Avengers: Endgame sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with more than 550 reviews. However, with many critics turning on superhero movies in recent years, there's been an increase in "superhero fatigue" talk and a general, often overly harsh, criticism of the genre.
However, one person who won't put up with the 2019 movie being torn down in any way is singer and talk show host Kelly Clarkson.
In a new video posted on The Kelly Clarkson Show's YouTube channel, the American Idol winner responds to negative Letterboxd reviews. In the case of Avengers: Endgame, she was having none of it.
"Who gave this a bad review?" Clarkson wondered before mocking critics: "'Ugh, it’s just these big epic Marvel things. These big epic superhero movies.' Fans love them. Not everything has to be Shawshank Redemption. Whatever."
The review also referenced Martin Scorsese's scathing assessment of comic book adaptations to which Clarkson said,...

While the latest promo still doesn't offer a first look at Jackman's fan-favorite mutant sporting his iconic mask, it does give us our first official look at Lady Deadpool... or, at least, her feet, but it's our first visual confirmation that she will indeed appear in the upcoming superhero feature. Now, as for who's playing her, that's anyone's guess, but the rumor mill has been heavily pointing in the direction of Reynolds' real-life wife Blake Lively or singer/songwriter Taylor Swift, who is a...

Among all the movies Marvel Studios has lined up, the ‘Avengers’ series stands out as the most thrilling. With two new ‘Avengers’ films in the works, the journey towards the fifth installment has been quite eventful lately.
Majors was let go in December of last year following allegations of assault against his ex-girlfriend, casting some uncertainty over the direction of the movie. The film’s title shifted from ‘Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avengers 5,’ and it’s unclear if Kang remains the primary antagonist.
New reports from Alex Perez’s Discord Ama suggest that ‘Avengers 5’ will explore a multiverse theme with a down-to-earth plot. It seems like the movie might split into two parts, exploring elements from the ‘Avengers Assemble/Avengers: Forever’ event. This storyline involves a Multiversal Council of Mephisto variants known as the Council of Red, Multiversal Masters of Evil, and an Avengers team-up to save existence. This...

Out of all the movies on Marvel Studios’ release schedule, the ‘Avengers’ franchise is undoubtedly the most exciting one. We know that two new ‘Avengers’ movies are in development, and when it comes to the fifth installment in the franchise, we’ve been through a lot in the last few months.
Majors’ was fired back in December after being found guilty of third-degree assault against his former girlfriend, and since then, the direction of the movie is confusing, to say the least. The movie internally changed its name from ‘Kang Dynasty’ to ‘Avenger 5,’ and we can’t even be sure that Kang is the main villain still.
Some new reports however have surfaced via Alex Perez’s discord Ama which claim that the movie will focus on a multiversal story with grounded story.
It sounds like ‘Avengers 5’ might explore the multiverse, possibly splitting into two parts with a grounded storyline.

In a Financial Times interview, Lourd also said that generative artificial intelligence could be a source of real opportunity for clients, even as the biggest AI firms like OpenAI don’t entirely understand the world of creatives.

Reports that Wes Anderson was aiming for a scaled-back cast for espionage thriller The Phoenician Scheme may well have been off the mark.
When reports first surfaced that Wes Anderson’s next film would be an espionage thriller, minds were left agog pondering what he was actually up to. After all, Anderson used the iconography of 1950s sci-fi films to unveil something far more intricate with 2023’s Asteroid City, so who knows what Anderson’s good old spy movie could secretly be a Trojan horse for?
One early report we did hear suggested that for this film, Wes Anderson would be scaling back his cast and not working in the same ensemble-driven way that he so often does. That report now looks like it could have been wide of the mark (or perhaps things simply evolved) as the full cast list for the film has now been released and well,...

A recent rumor claimed that Jordan Peele met with Marvel Studios about potentially taking the helm of an upcoming movie, and we may now know which project he was speaking to Kevin Feige and co. about.
Though it took some convincing (and a few quid from his patrons), Jeff Sneider revealed the name of the film during the latest episode of The Hot Mic, and, as many speculated, it was indeed the long-awaited X-Men reboot.
Unfortunately, it sounds like things didn't work out.
Sneider heard that he took the meeting a few weeks ago, and isn't actually sure if he was being eyed to director or write. Since then, we got word that the movie has enlisted a writer in the form of Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes; 2016's Assassin’s Creed movie).
This doesn't mean Peele won't return to the project down the line...
