Back in 2014, Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar rekindled people’s great interest in science fiction movies. The story of an astronaut on his way to a wormhole to find a new home for humanity attracted the attention of millions of viewers around the world.
Few of them know there was a 90s movie that literally paved the way for all modern sci-fi films. Since then it has gained a cultish status, but, nevertheless, it still seems underrated, especially given the fact that fans compare it to Nolan’s masterpiece.
The plot revolves around Dr. Ellie Arroway, a Seti employee who dedicated her life to the search for extraterrestrial life. After eventually finding the evidence of it, she faces skepticism from other scientists, politicians and media, but it’s high time to go further.

Nearly six months after it opened theatrically in the U.S./Canada, Toho’s Oscar Special Effects-winning “Godzilla Minus One” is finally available at home.
As of Saturday June 1, the Takashi Yamazaki film is now available free for subscribers on Netflix. It is also on VOD for $5.99 as a 48-hour rental or $14.99 as a digital download on platforms like iTunes (where it is already #1), Fandango, and Amazon Prime VideoAmazon Prime[/link].
It is unheard of for a Saturday to be a VOD release date, and very unusual for Netflix. That suggests the contractual agreement between Toho and Legendary Pictures (the producers of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”), which called for delayed availability for the Japanese title, specifically set June 1 as the earliest for home release.
A six-month window for home release is unheard of these days. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” had a four-month delay before hitting PVOD. Streaming came after seven months.

Mastermind filmmaker Denis Villeneuve surpassed absolutely all expectations that fans had of him by helming the Dune film series. It was made so immaculately that it turned into a mammoth-like distinctly successful franchise.
And yet, such tremendous success — especially at the global box offices — of the second installment of his book-based film series, seems to have rubbed the director the wrong way.

This comes after Villeneuve himself expressed his disappointment and one major regret about his Timothée Chalamet-starrer sequel to the 2021 masterpiece. Although, the movie has already conquered the box office with a remarkable victory that is yet to be surpassed by other projects this year.
But as unbelievable as it all may seem, the reason behind his regret and disappointment is actually only valid.

Christopher Nolan is among the most celebrated movie directors of our time, having tapped into various genres throughout his fruitful career, from mind-bending neo-noir detective thrillers to space sci-fi operas to biography dramas and many others.
Funnily enough, despite his broad directing range, some people still recognize Nolan primarily for The Dark Knight trilogy, his sensational take on Batman’s story. But little did we know that the director didn’t even want to make its final installment at all!
Nolan Resents Third Movie Installments
While Christopher Nolan has always been vocal about not being interested in the superhero genre —- which is amusing coming from the man who created one of the best superhero adaptations ever — it wasn’t his general attitude to the genre that almost kept him from making The Dark Knight Rises. It was something rather weird.

Have you ever been so moved by the impact of the power of cinematic stories that you ended up crying and thinking about the intricate details of a plot long after the film ends? Leonardo DiCaprio’s scene from Inception, the masterpiece by Christopher Nolan, does exactly that, encapsulating an emotional resonance that can still leave many of us affected.
A quick recall: After spending so many years in exile overseas, veteran dream thief Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) finally came clean of murder charges. To make sure he is not still dreaming, Cobb chose to give his totem one last spin as he entered his house.

The transition from good to evil has fascinated writers for centuries. Forcing characters to dance on the line of morality has always intrigued audiences more than two-dimensional characters with simple moral compasses. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is well-known for administering such dilemmas to their viewers through the characters they make.

Be it Kilmonger in Black Panther, Thanos’ noble motivations to wipe out half the universe, or the execution of the Punisher’s justice, it is difficult for fans to condemn some villains when their motivations are so complex. Five of the main six Avengers have managed to always have a strong moral compass, ever since the 2011 film, and these traits have stayed consistent. However, it would seem that their actors have played parts that juxtapose their iconic roles.

While Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan’s first biographical drama to hit the big screens, this wasn’t the Oscar-winner’s first time penning a script surrounding a real-life figure. Before changing the superhero landscape with The Dark Knight, the director had plans to make a biopic about the American aerospace engineer Howard Hughes, for which he even wrote a script.
But as the story goes, Nolan’s passion project never materialized as before the director could make his pitch, Martin Scorsese was already working on Hughes’ biopic, The Aviator. However, it wasn’t all in vain for Nolan, as his experience working on the script for his Howard Hughes biopic came in handy while penning Oppenheimer.

Editor’s note: When Christopher Nolan’s eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer began its global rollout last summer, a question mark hung over whether it would ever see the inside of a cinema in Japan, given the sensitive subject matter. Ultimately, the film released there eight months later, swiftly becoming the top-grossing Hollywood title of the year and continuing to hold that position (now at $11.6M). Nine weeks in, it is still playing on more than half of the market’s Imax screens, and in local currency (¥1.774B) is Nolan’s fourth-highest-grossing picture ever there.

Martin Scorsese is one of the most acclaimed filmmakers in Hollywood, and even at the age of 81 is churning out pieces of art. The filmmaker last helmed the crime-Western Killers of the Flower Moon, and is already gearing up for his next project. He remains one of the few individual voices still making films today.
Scorsese’s statements about cinema and the way superhero films were taking over the medium had drawn a lot of flack from fans. It took Robert Downey Jr. a while to completely understand the ways of an iconic director – David Fincher.
David Fincher is one of the greatest filmmakers alive today thanks to his incredible eye for detail and dark, intelligent narratives in his films. He began his journey as a director with Alien 3 and then went on to blow everyone away with his 1995 film, Seven. He has also directed Gone Girl, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Fight Club, a film that is nothing short of a cultural phenomenon across the globe.

The film follows the story of the infamous Zodiac Killer and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Mark Ruffalo along with Jake Gyllenhaal. Now, David Fincher is notorious for doing retakes until the scene reaches perfection.

Michael Mohan has taken to social media to express his dissatisfaction with how dark Immaculate looks on streaming platforms.
When it arrived in cinemas in March, Immaculate was the film that finally got 2024’s horror slate up and running. It’s a well-made horror flick, features an on-form Sydney Sweeney and was a lot of fun.
Given Sweeney’s perceived popularity with younger audiences, you might imagine that good word of mouth might have carried the film on to further successes following its streaming release. Instead, Immaculate seems to have hit a bit of a snag, with audiences complaining that the film is far too dark – as in, viewers aren’t able to see what’s going on.
The Hollywood Reporter has highlighted this issue, reporting that when one social media user stated that the film was ‘comically dark’, the film’s director actually took to X to reply.

Colin Farrell reprises his role as The Penguin, and it’s now confirmed that Sky will broadcast the series in the UK.
Spoilers for The Batman lie ahead.
Matt Reeves’ The Batman was among the top ten highest grossing films of 2022, the superhero epic expanding on the darker tone previously established in the Christopher Nolan trilogy while sticking more closely to the comics. One of its most striking performances was a near unrecognisable Colin Farrell as The Penguin.
It wasn’t long before HBO Max began developing a spin-off centering around the character, which will also serve as a bridge between The Batman and the upcoming sequel, which is currently scheduled to begin filming in 2025 for release in 2026.
Little is known about the plot of the series, although Farrell recently called it “incredibly violent“. The story will follow Oswald Copplebolt (aka The Penguin) and his rise to power. Farrell said...

Glen Powell is sharing his thoughts on playing the role of Batman and has some ideas.
In a new interview with GQ, Powell led a tour around the Warner Bros. Studio lot and came across the Batmobile section.
“I was always a Batman guy,” Powell said. “I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone – it’d probably be closer to [Michael] Keaton.”
The reporter noted that Powell doesn’t have any interest in playing a superhero. When Powell found Keaton’s Batmobile, he said, “Oh, sick! See? This is the era.”
Powell does have a history in the DC Universe. In 2012, he was credited as Trader #1 in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
“I get my head smashed in by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises,” he said.

Another weekend, another bit of very bad news for the movie business. Memorial Day weekend has, historically, been a major frame for the box office, with Disney's "The Little Mermaid" remake pulling in $95.4 million last year. (That number grows to $117.5 million when accounting for the Monday holiday.) That's what we've come to expect, pandemic notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the dual threat of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" didn't prove to be much of a threat at all, as both films fell well short of expectations, leading to a downright terrible holiday weekend. Garfuriosa was, in the end, the direct opposite of last year's Barbenheimer phenomenon in every way imaginable.
Warner Bros.' "Furiosa" took the top spot on the charts, pulling in $26.3 million through Sunday, with that number growing to an estimated $32 million when accounting for Monday. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' new animated "Garfield" film landed at number two...

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan aka the Nolan brothers have been an integral part of the movie industry for many years now. A director and a writer, they created 2008’s iconic The Dark Knight together, among other things — and according to Jonathan Nolan, it was that experience of working with his brother that helped him adapt Fallout. Otherwise, Prime Video’s latest sensation wouldn’t have existed now.
Fallout Creator Is Cautious with Big Franchises
At an FYC screening of Fallout’s first episode, Christopher Nolan interviewed his brother Jonathan about the new TV show.
He asked about his brother’s approach to adapting a massive and well-established franchise, specifically, a video game one, to small screens, and the writer admitted he was very self-conscious with it.
“There is room to do some writing in there. I think there’s always extraordinary respect for the Harry Potter films, for Lord of the Rings films…...

‘Immaculate’ Director Addresses Criticism of Film’s Dark Visuals on Streaming: “It’s a Real Problem”
The filmmaker behind the recent Sydney Sweeney horror movie Immaculate is addressing criticism about scenes from the film appearing to be overly dark when viewed on certain streaming platforms.
Michael Mohan took to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday after a social media user complained that the Neon film’s visuals were “comically dark” and shared screenshots showing that it was difficult to see what was happening as the movie was streaming. In his response, Mohan made it clear that he empathized with the concerns and had not intended for the film to look so dark.
“I know, man,” Mohan replied. “This was absolutely not done intentionally. We have no control over the compression specs of each platform.”
He continued, “It’s a real problem that truly bums me out, and after comparing them all, iTunes is the closest to what we wanted / brighter than the rest.”
I know, man. This was absolutely not done intentionally.

Director Denis Villeneuve hit it big this year with the release of his sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two. Based on Frank Herbert’s iconic novel series, the film followed the story of feudal noble families in the future. Villeneuve’s handling of the adaptation, which was largely considered to be unadaptable, was lauded by critics and fans alike.
While Villeneuve seems to have cracked the sci-fi genre, he reportedly was full of praise for his contemporary Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. The Dune director mentioned that he was in awe of the film while watching it and that he had watched it several times. Tenet remains one of Nolan’s more divisive works and earned only $359 million at the box office.

It is one of the great pleasures of life to acknowledge that the current generation of movie buffs and fans of classic IPs are living in the golden era of Hollywood. Whether itʼs a renaissance of comic book adaptations, a complete reinvention of the James Bond IP through Daniel Craig, or the live-action re-enactment of universes crafted by George R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling, the 21st century brings with it an epoch of unbridled, uncorrupted, and unstoppable creativity.

Christopher Nolan’s thriller/historical drama from 2023, Oppenheimer, is a based-on-real-events story, and be it Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer in the lead role or Gary Oldman’s President Harry Truman in a supporting one — everyone made sure to make it seem as realistic as possible.
But what if some of the scenes from the film never really happened in the first place?

As it turns out, it seems like one of the most iconic scenes in the entire movie as Truman just may have stemmed from a figment of Nolan’s imagination. Or, to be more precise, it may have never happened in the first place the way it was depicted, and the filmmaker just may have improvised it.
Why? Well, simply put: Because historical accounts recall it somewhat differently.

The bleak blockbuster that is "Dune: Part Two" finished up Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" duology in spectacular fashion. After 2021's "Dune" provided a more muted, subtle introduction to the world originally created by author Frank Herbert in his 1965 novel, the sequel delivered epic action, depicting Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet)'s transformation into the messianic leader of the Fremen, whom he leads in battle against the evil House Harkonnen. While there's a marked difference between the two movies in terms of pace, one thing that remained consistent was Villeneuve's meticulous attention to detail.
The director didn't want outside interpretations interfering with the design of "Dune" or its sequel, and implored his creative team to refer to Herbert's book for inspiration. The Barbenheimer phenomenon was something that everyone talked about last summer when two very important movies came out. One of them was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, a movie that showed us how great feminism can work on screen, while the other was Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt, a movie that showed us the terror of atomic energy. Both these movies were released at the same time and many people believed that they would cancel each other out and create a rivalry, but what happened was something completely different!
Fans of both movies united and this led to the birth of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, which brought in a substantial amount of money for cinemas last year, as Barbie fans called for people to go watch Oppenheimer, while Oppenheimer fans urged people to go watch Barbie. Martin Scorsese’s war with Marvel seems to be over as filmmaker George Lucas recently revealed that the director might have eased his opinions about the MCU. The Departed filmmaker came under fire back in 2019 when he compared Marvel with theme park rides and said that they were not cinema, sparking controversy and a bunch of memes.
While the filmmaker was commenting on the lack of originality in Hollywood and how the only films getting made were superhero films, many fans took issue with him insulting their beloved franchise. However, the director seemed to have calmed down about the issue, according to George Lucas.
