Controversial Change in the Dubbed Version The English-dubbed version of Godzilla Minus One has ignited a wave of criticism from fans. Central to the backlash is the alteration of a significant line delivered by Ryunosuke Kamiki’s character, Koichi Shikishima. Fans of the original film feel this change dilutes an essential aspect of Shikishima’s character arc. Director Takashi Yamazaki Weighs In Director Takashi Yamazaki, who both wrote and directed Godzilla Minus One, was notably tight-lipped regarding specific changes made in the dubbed version. He expressed his sentiments about the film’s premiere at the Tokyo Film Festival, stating, The Tokyo Film Festival...

In 1954, the first-ever live-action Godzilla movie aired on the screens. Ever since the fictional prehistoric monster has appeared in dozens of outings and has had a cultural impact across generations.
Hollywood carried out its own adaptations of the creature with a set of movies before connecting them into a Marvel-style connected termed the Monsterverse, kick-starting in 2014. While the entertainment aspect of these films never came into question, their status as cinema gems now has taken center stage.

In the span of a few months, two mega outings in the form of Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire have caused a schism in the fandom. This post contains spoilers for "Godzilla Minus One."
When "Godzilla Minus One" hit theaters late last year, it was a fierce reminder that visual effects can actually be amazing. These days, conversations about CGI mostly gravitate towards its continual overuse, the shoddiness of some digital effects work in recent blockbusters, and the reportedly relentless workload impacting exhausted effects artists. Yet, Toho Studios' latest kaiju flick is a minor cinematic miracle, a low-budget movie that doesn't overuse CGI while still managing to show off its central beastie plenty of times. For its achievements, the movie was awarded the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, the first the "Godzilla" franchise has earned in its 70 year history.
Surprisingly, despite the accolades the film received for its visuals, "Godzilla Minus One" doesn't actually utilize that much digital art compared to most of its contemporaries. In a Variety spotlight piece earlier this year, the film's director,...

Am I Ok? (Stephanie Allyne and Tig Notaro)
A romantic comedy that functions best as a fable of friendship and self-reflection, Am I Ok? is the kind of lightweight, amiable movie that just barely earns the emotional beats at the heart of its story. Set in Los Angeles, it follows the converging life events of two best friends, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) and Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), soul sisters with opposite personalities who tell each other everything—except for the big secrets they’ve been harboring from each other. How they respond to hearing them fuels Stephanie Allyne and Tig Notaro’s gentle and wobbly feature debut. – Jake K-s. (full review)

Netflix keeps unveiling huge surprises for its viewers by unexpectedly dropping big hits on its platform, and sometimes such surprises aren’t perceived in a very positive way.
Last weekend, the streaming had two major releases at the same time adding Takashi Yamazaki’s last year bombshell Godzilla Minus One and Takashi Miike’s high-rated horror movie Lumberjack the Monster.
Neither of them had previously received some kind of promotion from Netflix’s part, though Godzilla Minus One had no questions about this from the audience. Ironically, the same can’t be said about Lumberjack the Monster.
Upon its arrival at Netflix several days ago, the film made no real noise and just quietly landed on the platform unnoticed until someone posted a comment in the social media saying they’d discovered Lumberjack the Monster in the streaming’s collection by pure accident.

"Godzilla Minus One" is part of a new golden age of Godzilla, a movie that defied all expectations and made history at both the box office and also the Oscars. It's easy to see why. This is a film with fantastic visual effects that rival any Hollywood blockbuster, stunning Godzilla action, and a version of the king of the monsters that makes him terrifying again -- a force of nature, a monstrous allegory for nuclear armageddon.
The film also does something rare for a "Godzilla movie" and actually gives us compelling human characters that are as easy to root for and care about as the titular giant monster. This is particularly important because for once, the most impactful moments in the film revolve not around Godzilla, but the humans. Take Godzilla's attack on Ginza, the first time we see his devastating atomic blast. What is normally a moment of awe...

Whether you watch them or not, dubbed movies are a part of life. International dubs are more accessible for viewers with dyslexia, vision problems, or processing disorders, and they're a great early entry point for young kids experiencing world cinema for the first time. They're useful for all sorts of reasons, and the best of them feature strong performances that add additional layers to already-compelling stories. So, when a good movie gets a bad dub, it should be everyone's problem, and that seems to be the case for one of the best films of 2023: "Godzilla Minus One."
The latest Godzilla film from Toho Studios made a kaiju-sized impact when it debuted in theaters last December, earning an impressive $115 million worldwide against a super-lean budget and becoming the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla movie ever made. When Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg first showed up on our screens back in the day, he earned a lot of fans through the fact that he was a celebrity-on-the-rise who had “geeky” interests and embraced “geek culture.” There’s a quote from him bouncing around where he said, “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” He even titled his memoir Nerd Do Well… But last year, he distanced himself from his past self, writing off nostalgia as a neurological disorder and telling The Guardian, “I’ve aged out of a lot of what people assume I’m about.

2023 saw quite a few masterpieces (even though the box office disasters were more), and Godzilla Minus One was one of them.
Besides the tremendous critical praise it has earned from global audiences and critics, the movie seems to have gotten on the good side of quite a few celebrities in Hollywood as well. One of these is the Star Trek actor, Simon Pegg.

However, as compared to other notable reviewers, Pegg seemed to have a mixed opinion on the movie and the MonsterVerse.
This is because, on the one hand, while he greatly acknowledged the gem of a work that the film was, bringing about a new take on the Kaiju and its relationship with humans, he simultaneously also hinted that the MonsterVerse is “f—ing cultural appropriation.”

Godzilla Minus One is a rare beast. Despite being derived from a franchise that’s nearly three-quarters of a century old, and which has had more installments than there are days in a month, Takashi Yamazaki’s latest reinvention of the Big G feels fresh. It’s a true spectacle of emotion and cultural angst; a film that remarkably takes a piece of pop culture furniture like the giant irradiated lizard and makes him scary again.
In Godzilla Minus One, the titular creature is not only a dazzling sight of cinematic carnage candy, but he’s also a potent metaphor about war, destruction, and the psychic scars such catastrophes leave in their wake. Godzilla Minus One was released in late 2023, and fans around the world have had the opportunity to see it and enjoy this masterpiece of Japanese cinema. The film was a smashing success, and it also won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, after having triumphed in Japan and Asia. And while the movie was truly amazing, without a doubt, what surprised everyone was that the movie – which earned $115.8 million globally – was made with, as it seems, less than $10 million! Initial reports suggested a budget of $10 to $12 million, but in a recent interview, legendary Japanese video game developer and producer Hideo Kojima revealed that the budget was even smaller, and he claims that the key to the movie’s success lies there!

For the first time ever, a film streaming on Netflix (free for subscribers) and available on VOD ($5.99 for 48 hours) is #1 on both charts.
Toho’s late-2023 sleeper success and eventual Oscar Visual Effects winner, “Godzilla Minus One” achieved that feat with a totally unexpected and previously unannounced release on Saturday.
The film, released in early December to an unexpected U.S./Canada gross of $56 million, normally would have hit PVOD for rental for $19.99 by late January, been reduced to $5.99 after a few weeks, then found a streaming home. But because of vaguely defined agreements with Legendary Entertainment, Toho’s partner in making Warner Bros.’ costlier Godzilla films, the March opening of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” led to the early-February termination of theatrical dates for “Minus One.” That came despite the Toho film still doing business (and ahead of the Oscars). Then, Warner’s “Godzilla x Kong” could play without “Minus One” as competition.

Seriously, no less than Steven Spielberg is reported to be a great admirer of Minus One, with the Jaws filmmaker telling Yamazaki he’s watched the film three times.
There is of course a sound basis for this (and not just because Godzilla Minus One in part alludes to Jaws). Not since perhaps the original 1954 Godzilla has the iconic creature appeared so terrifyingly real and so menacingly apt as a metaphor for the industrialized war in the shadow of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Godzilla Minus One is the first Japanese Godzilla film in almost a decade — and it was worth the wait. Upon its release in November 2023, Takashi Yamazaki’s film was a bona fide global phenomenon, quickly becoming the highest-grossing Godzilla film ever to emerge from the titanic kaiju’s home country. It went on to win the franchise’s first ever Academy Award, for Best Visual Effects. (Peep the VFX team’s adorable Godzilla merch in their infectious acceptance speech.)

In 1954, Toho Co., Ltd. undertook the daunting task of introducing the now billions-dollar-worth kaiju, Godzilla. The movie captured the popular imagination and let loose a string of spin-offs, sequels, and crossovers that have come all the way to the Monsterverse and the franchise showcasing the nuclear prehistoric creature alongside Kong. However, in a stark departure from current iterations, director Takashi Yamazaki spun his own take on the lore with Godzilla Minus One.

Interestingly, he moved completely away from the staple CGI and big-budget action sequences. Rather, he settled on a fairly grounded approach with a unique setting that had yet to make its way to the screens since a long time back. Brilliantly, all of his plans worked out, and the movie went on to become one of the most successful of the franchise as well as one with the most acclaim.

Nearly six months after it opened theatrically in the U.S./Canada, Toho’s Oscar Special Effects-winning “Godzilla Minus One” is finally available at home.
As of Saturday June 1, the Takashi Yamazaki film is now available free for subscribers on Netflix. It is also on VOD for $5.99 as a 48-hour rental or $14.99 as a digital download on platforms like iTunes (where it is already #1), Fandango, and Amazon Prime VideoAmazon Prime[/link].
It is unheard of for a Saturday to be a VOD release date, and very unusual for Netflix. That suggests the contractual agreement between Toho and Legendary Pictures (the producers of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”), which called for delayed availability for the Japanese title, specifically set June 1 as the earliest for home release.
A six-month window for home release is unheard of these days. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” had a four-month delay before hitting PVOD. Streaming came after seven months.

Toho’s 34th Godzilla film is reportedly eyeing a new director after Takashi Yamazaki-directed film Godzilla Minus One won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. According to sources, the director of the Bleach live-action movie, Shinsuke Sato, will be Toho’s new choice of director.
It is also reported that the film will not be a sequel to the earlier film and will be a standalone work. Fans are not exactly thrilled to hear this news, as they believe that Toho is wasting a great opportunity.

Godzilla Minus One was truly a spectacle. The film has been regarded as one of the most successful films of the Godzilla film series, and its director, Takashi Yamazaki, can be thanked for it. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim for many different reasons. One of its most prominent assets is its visual effects, impressively winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The film also made a lot of money during its box office release, almost going above $116 million worldwide. Despite all its success, it would seem that Toho Studios made a huge mistake less than a year after the film’s release that will certainly affect its profit.

Godzilla (Gojira), the beloved fictional movie monster, is a favorite among viewers. Since 1954, Godzilla has been wreaking havoc on screens, terrifying and delighting audiences. The genesis of this creature can be traced back to something profoundly serious and devastating: thermonuclear weapons and the tangible threats they pose to humanity.
The first instalment in the series was “Godzilla” (1954), directed by Ishirō Honda and produced by Toho Studios. Going beyond a simple horror/monster movie, it drew inspiration from a real-life event involving the ‘Lucky Dragon No. 5' (Daigo Fukuryū Maru) tuna fishing boat. This vessel was navigating in waters near the Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, not far from the area where the American military had chosen to conduct a test of a hydrogen bomb (a thermonuclear device). There’s no doubt that Takashi Yamazaki’s last year epic film Godzilla Minus One was quite a big win everywhere it would go. Released in late 2023, the movie was quick to garner $115 million worldwide with the initial budget of only $12 million and eventually even multiplied its grand success by landing an impressive score of 98% from both critics and viewers.
With an Academy award for Best Visual Effects under its belt, Godzilla Minus One is still a frequent watch choice among those who didn’t make it to the cinemas back in December, but the movie’s current popularity among viewers seems to be a questionable matter.
According to Torrent Freak’s most recent data, Godzilla Minus One is the number one movie to be streamed illegally through pirates’ sites, surpassing even Dune: Part 2 and Nicholas Cage’s horror film Arcadian for the week of May 6.

With an enduring saga that spans seven decades since its conception, involving stories that function as parables of the atomic age, pointing out the follies and hubris of humankind, Godzilla can very well be perceived as a key figure in the mythos of a postmodern world. Like the gods of Hindu mythology, the nuclear monster has been reincarnated through generations with renewed symbolism. Beginning as a condemnation of nuclear warfare, transforming into a personification of nature’s fury and vengeance upon humanity, eventually becoming representative of the wrath of the souls who have been wronged on the battlefield, and later on Godzilla also acted as a critique of the response of the government’s absolute negligence towards their people. In Toho’s latest venture revolving around the iconic kaiju, Godzilla Minus One, the beast is an embodiment of survivor’s guilt, an embodiment of an old world order that shackles...

The original 1954 "Godzilla" film may look a bit worn 70 years after its release, but one aspect of the movie is still capable of reaching across time and space to rattle the nerves of modern moviegoers: that famous kaiju roar. Ishirō Honda's groundbreaking film brought its eponymous creature to life with a screeching, discordant sound that sends tingles down the spine, and it's a noise that the latest Toho Studios masterpiece, the critically acclaimed "Godzilla Minus One," aimed to emulate and expand upon.
In an interview with A Frame, the sound team behind the Oscar-winning film explained exactly how they put together the new Godzilla roar, a stunning noise that punctuated the film's first trailer and sounds even better in context. According to writer-director Takashi Yamazaki, he and the sound team decided to create the latest roar in part by replaying the original audio in a space that would allow for major echoes and reverberations.

Last year’s Godzilla Minus One received many accolades and acclaim worldwide for its treatment of the kaiju genre. It became the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar after the Takashi Yamazaki film received the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. The film was also commercially successful, earning over $115 million against a $15 million budget.
While the film has been one of the most popular releases of 2023, it took almost six months for it to debut on streaming. Amazon Prime Video announced that Godzilla Minus One would be streaming on the platform from May 3. However, there is a catch. The movie would reportedly only stream in Japan, which might lead to many fans watching it illegally.

Recently, Takashi Yamazaki's "Godzilla Minus One" made Academy Award history by winning the Best Visual Effects category, becoming the first film in the decade-spanning franchise to win an Oscar. An absolutely deserved win aside, it is one that feels both unexpected and a long time coming, with the future of the kaiju looking brighter than ever. One of the reasons why "Godzilla Minus One" is such an impactful entry can be chalked up to how humanity bands together to defeat a mammoth, indestructible force while also dealing with a socio-political situation that mirrors some of the bleakest moments in Japanese history. It is a film that ventures way beyond the spectacle of an incomprehensible beast stomping around without any regard for human lives, with the focus often shifting to the intricate inner lives of everyday citizens working together to achieve the impossible.

With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ruling the world, thanks to a huge $194 million box office weekend, the MonsterVerse has never been so mighty. As speculation for a third Godzilla-versus-Kong movie is underway, it is time to talk about the best parts of the kaiju-centered universe: the monster battles.
While Kong had a share of bare-knuckle brawls, Godzilla faced numerous foes, with most of them nearly outmatching the fearsome lizard. It only begs the question: if they can beat Godzilla, can they also beat Kong? Here are five of Godzilla’s enemies that can defeat Kong in a battle:
