Barry Keoghan, Andrea Arnold and Franz Rogowski in Cannes Photo: Richard Mowe Ask British director Andrea Arnold to explain herself and her films usually results in a left-field answer that nobody could have guessed.
And so it transpired with Bird, her latest film in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, which stars stars Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, Nykiya Adams and Jason Buda. It follows a 12-year-old youngster (Adams) who lives with her brother (Buda) and single father (Keoghan) in a squat by the seaside. As puberty looms the girl seeks attention and excitement elsewhere. Enter Bird (Rogowski), an enigmatic figure, who provides the promise of escape.
So what was that image that provided the genesis for Bird? Arnold gives a laugh and launches forth regardless: “So a very long time ago I had an image of a very thin and tall young man with a large penis standing on a roof.

Shogun is the best thing that ever happened to Hulu.
It currently sits in the number one spot as the most-watched program in FX's history, backed by massive critical acclaim.
It doesn't begin or end there, either. The book, published in 1975, was also a massive hit, as was the succeeding 1980s TV mini-series.
Since the release of the most recent iteration, television critics and reviewers have brushed off the idea of a second season, much less a third.
The series and the book both end in the same place, after all. Besides a loosely related 1993 novel, Gai-Jin, James Clavell never wrote a sequel.
Only a week ago, most media outlets were waxing poetic about the show's profound wonders and sulking over the sudden loss of Shogun after a ten-episode run.
It's hard to blame them. What else is there to cover?
Sure, showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo did...

Power, the new documentary centered on the police in the United States, comes from the stable of Netflix, but it is certainly not your regular “true crime” entertainment. The Yance Ford-directed documentary is not based on any particular event. Instead, it takes the route of being introspective about the whole police system. Ford, who’s an Emmy winner, has already proved his mettle in documentary filmmaking with the very personal Strong Island, where he investigated the murder of his own brother. Unlike Strong Island, Ford’s latest work is based on a general topic and an exploration of it. Let’s take a closer look.
What is the documentary about?
The word “police” implies power, and Ford’s documentary goes deep into finding out the origin of it. Ford starts from the very beginning, which was the creation of the first ever police force in America in 1883 in Boston.

Less than 24 hours after the world premiere of Cannes favorite Andrea Arnold’s new competition entry Bird, the filmmaker joined her cast for the festival press conference inside the Palais on Friday. The wide-ranging session covered Arnold’s creative influences, casting choices and the music playlists she gives to her actors.
It also touched on star Barry Keoghan‘s dance abilities as the actor delivers another on screen dance break, this one following his viral fully nude Saltburn finale to the tune of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dance Floor.” In Arnold’s Bird, Keoghan busts a move to “Cotton Eye Joe” and then delivers a solo performance at the microphone, singing and dancing to serenade his new bride at their wedding reception. British auteur Andrea Arnold follows up her last feature, the poignant, non-verbal slice-of-farmyard-life that is the documentary Cow, with a new member of her cinematic menagerie: drama Bird, an uplifting competitor for Cannes’ Palme d’Or.
With mostly human characters and actual dialogue, in some ways this is taxonomically more like her gritty-as-asphalt, early social-realist work, especially Fish Tank and Oscar-winning short Wasp, which, like Bird, were shot in the southerly county of Kent, U.K., where Arnold grew up. But then suddenly, out of the milieu’s marshy semi-urban landscape of empty beer cans, cigarette butts, domestic abuse and despair, the film takes magical-realist flight and transforms into something unlike anything Arnold’s done before. Thanks to the director’s magisterial knack with actors (especially non-professionals such as terrific adolescent discovery Nykiya Adams, who, as the protagonist, is in nearly every frame of the film), the result is quite entrancing.

Barry Keoghan smiled from ear to ear as Andrea Arnold’s latest film, “Bird,” earned a seven-minute standing ovation at its Cannes Film Festival premiere on Thursday.
Festival favorite Arnold, who brought the Shia Labeouf-starring “American Honey” to Cannes in 2016 and her documentary “Cow” in 2021, basked in appreciation as the audience applauded the drama. “Thank you, this is really lovely but I really want to go and party right now,” she said as laughter erupted in the room.
While Keoghan was the biggest name in “Bird,” the loudest cheers were offered to his young co-stars, including Jason Buda and Jasmine Jobson. Some of the cast, although they may have been on the red carpet outside, were too young to make it into the screening.

Andrea Arnold‘s anticipated new film Bird touched down at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday for an afternoon world premiere at the Grand Lumiere Theatre. And it got a warm reception, including a seven-minute standing ovation.
The competition title stars Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, Nykiya Adams and Jason Buda star in the film which follows a 12-year-old (Adams) who lives with her brother (Buda) and single dad (Keoghan) in a squat in North Kent. There is only one Andrea Arnold, as much as her contemporaries in Europe and beyond try to imitate her particular style: emotionally heightened social realism with often first-time actors playing characters not far from their real selves. That itself started in the 1950s with British kitchen sink realism. Yet Arnold has done much to imbue it with a radical poetry that finds the beauty in a hardscrabble life, from a volatile East London teenager with hip-hop ambitions in “Fish Tank” (2009) to the rumbling road odyssey “American Honey” (2016) that found Arnold shooting in the United States for the first time.
Her latest film “Bird,” continuing a tradition for one-word titles centered around animalia Arnold started in 2001 with her short film “Dog” and more recently with the documentary “Cow,” is a departure for Arnold in a key way: This sensitively drawn if opaque coming-of-age fable about 12-year-old Bailey (newcomer Nykiya Adams) uses,...

On the eve of the world premiere of her new film Bird at the Cannes Film Festival, festival favorite Andrea Arnold revealed that the shoot was the toughest of her career.
“It was the hardest film I ever made,” Arnold said from the stage on Wednesday while accepting the 2024 Carrosse d’Or, or Golden Coach Award, at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. “There were many challenges, more than usual, and there seemed to be more restrictions than I’d ever known. Lots of things I’ve put on the page and cared about got lost, so the edit was really hard. It was proving really hard to carve from the rushes something of the film I had intended. I was grieving the losses and I felt pretty vulnerable.”

Ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia this summer, the next film from The Adams Family has received a release date this week.
Shudder will premiere Hell Hole on August 23, Rue Morgue first reported.

“Known for their DIY ethos, John and Lulu Adams and Toby Poser, partnering with Shudder, have joined the team behind The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and FX legend Todd Masters to shoot their latest in Serbia with a local cast and crew.

Amy Adams has been in development with Nightbitch for over a year, but details have now started to surface as the neo-horror film has recently released a new poster from Searchlight Pictures. The film has been written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nightbitch is based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The film will tell the story of “a suburban mom thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler. As she embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.”
Adams plays that possibly canine housewife. Scoot McNairy (Monsters) is also in the cast, playing her “oft-traveling husband,” while Mary Holland, who is best known for appearing in the Netflix release Senior Year and for co-writing and co-starring in Clea DuVall’s romantic comedy Happiest Season, takes on an unspecified role.

Marielle Heller is a young American filmmaker known for her debut feature The Diary of a Teenage Girl, as well as for the Tom Hanks-led A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which told the story of Fred Rogers, one of America’s most famous television presenters. Well, the filmmaker has taken on a new project, which will be released later this year, and we can already confirm that it will be something wholly different than Heller’s work so far, but with the cast involved and the surreal story, it promises to be a very exciting feature.
The movie in question is going to be titled Nightbitch, and it is slated for a December 6, 2024 release. The movie will be based on the eponymous book by Rachel Yoder, which deals with the issues of motherhood from a very surreal and different perspective, showing how it can be both horrid and hilarious at the same time.

The buzz has been building since last summer, when we learned Amy Adams will take the lead in the upcoming horror comedy, Nightbitch, a comedy horror production that is already sharpening its claws for our imaginations. This six-time Oscar nominee actress, 49, takes on the role of a woman who begins to transform into a dog (or believes she is the one… it remains to be seen).

The first official poster for upcoming horror comedy, Nightbitch, has been released to mark Mother's Day. The surreal-sounding horror comedy stars Amy Adams (Man of Steel) as a woman who starts to believe she's undergoing a hair-raising transformation.
The six-time Academy Award nominee will play a woman who begins to transform into a dog (or thinks she does... it's not really clear). Searchlight Pictures acquired the project, which is described as a "darkly comic horror" adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel of the same name.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? director Marielle Heller will take the helm.
“She’s incredible, I mean, we all know Amy Adams is incredible," Heller said of Adams' performance in a recent interview with IndieWire. "She’s been nominated for a million Academy Awards. She’s amazing, but she really is special in this movie and I’m just so excited for the world to see her.

Romance tropes always play a crucial role in superhero films, as it enriches the plot and adds another layer of complexity to the characters’ personalities. While romance enables its viewers to relate to the film, the superhero genre always struggles to incorporate the ideas in their movies. Such was the case in the original Zack Snyder’s Justice League, until Avengers: Endgame directors approved of the unprecedented idea.

In the DC universe, the rivalry of Batman and Superman stands tall as one of the most iconic and enduring dynamics. The rivalry originates from the clash of ideologies and their take on justice. However, the Rebel Moon filmmaker decided to take their iconic rivalry to another level as he decided to put the Caped Crusader and The Daily Planet’s reporter in a relationship after Superman’s demise in the original plot of Justice League.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said the city’s corrections officials “will be ready” to hold former President Donald Trump at the notorious Rikers Island prison, known as one of the worst in the United States, should the judge in his hush-money case send him there.
“Our amazing [Department of Corrections Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie], she is prepared for whatever comes on Rikers Island,” Adams said when asked about Trump’s possible incarceration. “I’m pretty sure she would be prepared to manage and deal with the situation.”
“As you see with Harvey Weinstein, we have to adjust,” Adams said, in reference to the Hollywood mogul who was held for medical treatment at Bellevue Hospital.
Adams acknowledged that while dealing with hypothetical situations is not ideal, the city’s law enforcement entities must be prepared for any possibility. Trump currently faces trial in Manhattan on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to alleged hush money...

It was an easy, breezy installment, but some noteworthy moments.
We have Yasuda leading the pack as best intern on Grey's Anatomy Season 20 Episode 6, while Simone and Blue continued to bond.
And Beltran had to juggle Levi and Amelink.
Join the discussion with Haley Whitmire White, Lucy Peel, and Jasmine Blu!
What were your overall thoughts on this episode?
Haley: It was fine for a filler episode. Nothing terribly exciting happened, but it set up several potential big storylines. A couple of moments made me think we're in for some pretty big reveals towards the end of the season.
Lucy: I liked seeing different pairings here. Link and Beltran, Webber and Adams, Kwan and Griffith. Otherwise, I was underwhelmed. I am sure we're in for a big season finale, possibly disaster-centric.
Jasmine: I think this has been an interesting season because it feels like a "filler season." They haven't...

JiDion has returned to Twitch. More than two years after his account on the platform was suspended, the controversial creator (whose real name is Jidon Adams) has had his streaming privileges reinstated.
The story so far
Adams started streaming in 2018, and he quickly rose up the ranks through a brash brand of prank content. His rise on Twitch included numerous controversies. He was banned from professional tennis and basketball leagues after performing outlandish stunts during games.
Despite those Irl antics, the offense that led to the suspension of the JiDion account occurred online. Early in 2022, the streamer sent his fans to the account of Pokimane, where they carried out a “hate raid.” When Twitch determined that Adams had sicced his followers on his rival streamer, the Amazon-owned platform hit him with a two-week suspension that was eventually extended to a permanent ban.

In a surprising moment during a regularly scheduled press briefing about public safety statistics, the Columbia University protests, migrant centers, the proliferation of illegal weed shops and Mayor Eric Adams’ upcoming trip to meet the Pope in Rome, a curveball question pressed Adams on the possible, if unlikely, jailing of former President Donald Trump.
Asked whether New York City’s Rikers Island complex would be prepared to handle the jailing of Trump, or if the city had any plans in place for such a situation, Adams said the city’s corrections officials “will be ready.”
“Our amazing [Department of Corrections Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie], she is prepared for whatever comes on Rikers Island,” Adams told reporters. “I’m pretty sure she would be prepared to manage and deal with the situation.

Based on what I can gather about her new film, At the Sea, Amy Adams needs a pair of sandals and a stiff drink. Adams is teaming up with Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber – the director and writer of Pieces of a Woman and White God – for a new drama about rejuvenation and adjusting to a life you had not planned to live.
According to Deadline, At the Sea finds Adams’s Laura returning to her family at their holiday beach house after a long rehabilitation. Once there, Laura must readjust to her new lot in life, still haunted by aspects she tried to leave behind. Staring down the barrel of a new chapter of her life, Laura must cope without her fame, fortune, and, of all things, her identity.
Adams, a six-time Academy Award-nominated actress, recently wrapped production on the sci-fi drama Klara and the Sun, which Taika Waititi directs.

Amy Adams has been tapped to star in At the Sea, a new drama from Kornel Mundruczó and Kata Wéber — the director and writer of such acclaimed films as Pieces of a Woman and White God — as well as Hammerstone Studios, Ryder Picture Company and Ar Content.
Set to enter production in Boston in June, the film follows the life of Laura (Adams) after a long rehabilitation, as she returns to her family at their beach holiday home where she has to readjust to the complicated life she left behind. Now she is forced to face the following next chapter of her life without the career that gave her fame, fortune and, most importantly, identity.
Pic will be produced by Alexander Rodnyansky of Ar Content, Stuart Manashil, Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett for Ryder Picture Company, Hammerstone Studios’ Alex Lebovici and Jon Oakes, and Viktória Petrányi and Mundruczó. Exec producers are Paul J. Diaz, Maria Breese of 3:33 Creative, Lee Broda of Lb Entertainment, Jeff Rice of Jeff Rice Films, and Michael Kupisk. Zsofi Oblath and Rachel Rubin will co-produce.
Ar Content, Paul J. Diaz, and Hammerstone Studios will finance the film, with WME Independent to rep domestic rights, Capstone Pictures handling international, and Sacker Law to oversee production legal.
A six-time Academy Award nominee, Adams most recently wrapped production on 3000 Pictures’ Klara and the Sun, the next film from Oscar winner Taika Waititi, which adapts the dystopian sci-fi story from Kazuo Ishiguro. Up next, she’ll be seen starring in Searchlight Pictures’ Nightbitch from filmmaker Marielle Heller, a dark comedy she also produced through her production company Bond Group Entertainment that hits theaters December 6.
A married director-writer pair out of Hungary, Mundruczó and Wéber are perhaps best known for their 2020 pregnancy drama Pieces of a Woman, which premiered in Venice and brought star Vanessa Kirby her first Oscar nomination following its release on Netflix. Prior to that, the duo collaborated on White God, which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes in 2014; Jupiter’s Moon, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or; and Evolution, which also played the French festival. Separately, Mundruczó directed the pilot of the Apple TV+ limited series, The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried.
Most recently, Hammerstone produced the action thriller Boy Kills World starring Bill Skarsgård, which will release wide on April 26, and the horror-thriller Don’t Move, starring Kelsey Asbille and Finn Wittrock, for Netflix.
Ryder Picture Company has produced acclaimed titles like Dumb Money and Bruiser.
Ar Content is known for Cannes prize winners like 2019’s Beanpole, from filmmaker Kantemir Balagov, and 2021’s Unclenching the Fists from Kira Kovalenko.
Adams is represented by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern. Mundruczó and Wéber are repped by United Agents and Novo.

New York Mayor Eric Adams visited the scene outside the Manhattan criminal courthouse, where media outlets and reporters have stationed themselves as Donald Trump’s hush money trial takes place inside.
“Our city is a fair city,” Adams said, in response to a question from CBS News’ Robert Costa on whether he was confident that Manhattan jurors would be fair to Trump.
Earlier, a reporter asked Adams about criticism that Trump would not be able to get a fair trial, given the ideological bent of the city’s residents.
“That is beyond my pay grade,” Adams said. “I am just here to make sure that if the trial is taking place, that it is done in a very orderly fashion. Two of America’s founding fathers are fed up. Aside from their shared belief in a bold new experiment called the United States, Benjamin Franklin (Michael Douglas) and John Adams (Eddie Marsan) don’t often see eye to eye, and their conflicting visions have only strayed further during negotiations with France. Adams doesn’t see the point in spending so much time catering to one European king while they’re trying to assert their independence from another. Franklin knows the path to freedom comes with tolls that only the French can pay. But more to the point, he knows the French. He knows their customs, their language, and their comportment. Adams’ attempts to speak French are almost as disastrous as his impatience with their languid dealmaking, and after an unnecessary setback, his co-emissary tries to warn him.
“Your notion of diplomacy will be our undoing,” Franklin says. “America cannot suffer anymore of this slow,...

Searchlight Pictures announced on Friday that its darkly comedic horror film Nightbitch, starring six-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (Arrival), has been slated for release in theaters on December 6.
An adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel, from writer-director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) Nightbitch tells the story of a woman thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine.
Marking a reemergence of Megan Ellison’s reconfigured Annapurna in the marketplace, the project came together when Bond Group and Annapurna acquired film rights to Yoder’s book and developed the script alongside Heller. In May 2022, Searchlight acquired worldwide rights to the project, in a deal valued at over $25M.

Six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams will find herself back in the awards conversation again in 2024. The actress, whose most recent Academy Award nomination came in 2019 for the film “Vice,” stars in the new movie “Nightbitch” from writer-director Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”). On Friday, Searchlight set “Nightbitch” on its release calendar for December 6.
Based on the book by Rachel Yoder, “Nightbitch” is about a woman who “pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mom, but soon her domesticity takes a surreal turn.” Amazon provides a more detailed description of Yoder’s novel, for those who are interested:
An ambitious mother puts her art career on hold to stay at home with her newborn son, but the experience does not match her imagination. Two years later, she steps into the bathroom for a break from her toddler’s demands, only to discover...

It’s been a year and a half since Nightbitch, a project that has been described as being a darkly comic “neo-horror” movie, went into production with Amy Adams (American Hustle) in the lead role, and now we finally have an update to share: Searchlight Pictures has announced that they will be giving the film a theatrical release on December 6, 2024. This is an upgrade in the release plans, as Nightbitch was originally meant to be released through the Hulu streaming service.
Written and directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), Nightbitch is based on a novel by Rachel Yoder. The film will tell the story of a suburban mom thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler. As she embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a dog.
Adams plays that possibly canine housewife.
