Trim Season
Production designer Ariel Vida's sophomore directorial feature, Trim Season, follows a group of young people who isolate themselves on a secluded farm in Northern California, making easy money trimming marijuana. When Emma (Bethlehem Million), Julia (Alex Essoe), and Dusty (Bex Taylor-Klaus), begin to suspect the farm and its matriarch Mona (Jane Badler) are shrouded in dark practices, they realise they might not escape with their lives.
When I connected with Essoe virtually, she was full of enthusiastic energy. The Canadian actress has long been a personal favourite genre performer after first seeing her in Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer’s Starry Eyes. The visceral character she played in Marcus Dunstan's The Neighbour, opposite Josh Stewart, remains one of her most seductive and captivating performances. Together they show her emotional range, moving effortlessly between vulnerability and a cold, distant and rawer presence, that she has built upon throughout her career,...

The 2000s was an interesting time for cinema. Let’s face it: it was an interesting time in general. In the realm of horror, the beginning of the aughts saw an influx of remakes of J-Horror – some bad, some pretty decent. However, with the post-9/11 cultural climate heightening anxieties and desensitization to violence due to real-world events, another genre emerged, tapping into the darker side of human nature. First coined by David Edelstein in a 2006 article in New York magazine, “torture porn” took the roots of exploitation and splatter films of the 70s and 80s and reintroduced the mainstream audiences to a new level of explicit brutality. Films like Saw, Hostel, The Devil’s Rejects, and the New Extremity of French Horror were raw and unapologetic looks at human depravity. It was everywhere. I mean, there was a time when you couldn’t go more than a year without having a Saw film.

When Criminal Minds: Evolution returns for Season 17, it will be doing so without one of its long-time recurring stars. In January, Josh Stewart, who has recurred since debuting in the original run’s second season, wrote on social media that his “days of playing Will Lamontagne Jr. are over.” But how will the show address the absence of JJ’s (A.J. Cook) husband, especially considering how much we saw of them at home together in the first season of the revival? TV Insider asked showrunner Erica Messer just that. “Yeah, we really enjoyed that run last season and then this season again, because it’s only two weeks from last season and it’s sort of a bullet train of a year, we know that he’s on an assignment, just like there’s always another case, just like we always have another case,” Messer explains. “So we’re not...

It’s not just the bad guys who have to watch their backs anymore. In the chilling wake of the new film Abigail, where a seemingly straightforward kidnapping spirals into a vampire-fueled frenzy, we’ve been inspired to delve into the murky depths of horror movies where it’s evil squaring off against evil. These 12 films twist the usual fright formula by pitting traditional villains—think thieves, rogue agents, and hardened criminals—against adversaries that are unexpectedly more sinister and supernatural. So, buckle up as we unleash a list that explores the darkest corners of human (and non-human) nature, where everyone’s morality is grey and the bad guys get way more than they bargained for…

Paramount has rebooted Criminal Minds, and starting in November 2022, we were once again immersed in the story of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) agents as they grappled with criminal minds and personal lives. Now, the story has taken an even darker turn, it has been released in a streaming format rather than the traditional TV broadcast one, and the show itself has been subtitled as Evolution. And before we knew it, a new season was already in production (the second season of Evolution and the seventeenth since Criminal Minds premiered on CBS in 2005).
While fans wait in anticipation, the upcoming Season 17 has already had its fair share of details and speculation. Josh Stewart, who has played Will Lamontagne Jr. since Season 2, will be leaving the show, while many are sure that everyone's favorite Spencer Reid will be back, as Matthew Gray Gubler's schedule has finally been cleared, and the...

The Bau is getting an assist from a Desperate Housewives alum.
TVLine reports that Felicity Huffman has closed a deal to guest star during Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2, and her character has ties to the original series.
Huffman is playing Dr. Jill Gideon, described as “a brilliant biological psychiatrist who winds up helping the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit investigate a murderous conspiracy theory.”
If that surname sounds familiar, it’s because she’s the wife of Jason Gideon (Mandy Patinkin), so she has plenty of ties to the team.
Jill isn’t too fond of getting involved with the Bau because of her past, which concludes a “complicated history” with David Rossi (Joe Mantegna).
However, her expertise is needed because the team is struggling to crack open the Gold Star mystery.

“I never forget where I came from,” he affirmed, citing his multiple past returns to The Young and the Restless and Criminal Minds.

If the triumphant return of the Saw franchise has you in the mood for more trap-laden horrors, look no further than The Collector — which was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw that would show Jigsaw’s original story. When producers passed on the idea, writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV-vii) reworked it into an original script, which Dunstan directed in 2009.

Criminal Minds: Evolution fans apparently will be saying goodbye to longtime cast member Josh Stewart. The actor today posted on X (fka Twitter) that “sadly, my days of playing Will Lamontagne Jr. are over,” adding “You guys have been the absolute best.”
Stewart first appeared as a recurring on the original CBS drama Criminal Minds in Season 2 as Nopd detective William Lamontagne Jr. He went on to appear on at least one episode each season. In the two-part Season 7 finale, Will wed Special Agent J.J. Jareau (A.J. Cook). He appeared in nine out of 10 episodes in Evolution’s first season, revealing to J.J. at one point that he was concerned he had cancer.

Is it bad that our first thought upon reading which recurring cast member we won’t see again on Criminal Minds: Evolution was to a storyline in the original run’s final season? Production on the new season began on January 16, but someone who won’t be seen in any behind-the-scenes content from set (Kirsten Vangsness shared a video on Instagram) is Josh Stewart, who has recurred as Will Lamontagne Jr., who started out as a detective the Behavioral Analysis Unit (Bau) worked with on a case and eventually became JJ’s (A.J. We've been clamoring for more Criminal Minds since Criminal Minds Evolution Season 1 left us gasping due to its shocking revelations.
Despite scoring a speedy renewal, the long-running drama that morphed into a streaming series a year ago hasn't yet entered production.
Earlier this year, there was word that filming would begin imminently, so fresh episodes were on the air for fans quickly.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes brought Hollywood to a standstill, meaning no new episodes could be produced.
Recently, both guilds reached deals with the AMPTP to fairly compensate writers and actors for their work, clearing the way for production to get underway.
Paget Brewster took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to respond to a fan to give some updates about the show and it's good news.

There's no disappointment quite as confusing as when a film gets canceled. It might happen suddenly, or become inevitable as a passion project suffers delay after delay. Then, when it does happen, it's usually because of shrouded problems behind the scenes or other powers beyond our control, like luck and timing. Suddenly, an exciting project ceases to exist. For hard-working artists and eager cinephiles alike, it's like a rug getting pulled.

Criminal Minds continues to be a large presence in television with its current revival show Evolution. Its most recent season took major inspiration from a single question that created a frightening scenario.
How the pandemic helped resurrect ‘Criminal Minds’ A.J. Cook as JJ and Josh Stewart as William Lamontagne in ‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ | Michael Yarish/Getty Images
Criminal Minds as most fans knew it reached its conclusion on February 19, 2020. It ended its run with 10 episodes, which had been one of the least number of episodes the show aired since its inception. Ironically, the popular police procedural would end after Covid-19 became a massive threat to the world. What fans perhaps didn’t predict was how much the pandemic would impact the series’ 16th season.
Series showrunner Erica Messer confided to Deadline that it wasn’t too long after Criminal Minds ended that she was asked to bring the show back.

Long-lasting relationships on Criminal Minds are few and far between. Over the years, viewers have seen romantic partners tragically die at the hands of serial killers or leave Bau members behind due to their busy schedules and dangerous line of work. One couple that has remained steady is JJ (A.J. Cook) and Will (Josh Stewart), although their relationship has been put at risk many times. They faced a frightening medical scare in Criminal Minds: Evolution, and according to A.J. Cook, that storyline was inspired by her real life.

The “Criminal Minds” Behavioral Analysis Unit is back in the upcoming revival series, “Criminal Minds: Evolution.”
The crime drama series follows Bau’s elite profilers as they face a mysterious antagonist, an UnSub who used the pandemic to build a network of serial killers. When the network is set in motion, the team must bring down their greatest threat, one murderer at a time.
Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez star as their characters from “Criminal Minds,” while Zach Gilford and Josh Stewart appear as recurring roles.
CBS’ original “Criminal Minds” series, which ran from 2005 to 2020, followed the Bau squad as they investigated and analyzed the nation’s most dangerous serial killers and individual crimes. Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney — who played Dr. Spencer Reid and Special Agent Matt Simmons, respectively — are not yet confirmed to appear in the reboot.

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.
I hope you’ll find it interesting following as I dig further into a genre I’ve always loved, and maybe find some hidden gems along the way yourselves.
Week 1’s film can be found here
Week 2’s films are here.
The perils of Week 3 are just a click away.
Now… Prepare yourself for Horrorthon 4
The Collector (2009) Dir: Marcus Dunstan
Apparently, this was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw, but when the screenplay was rejected for that idea, it was re-jigged as a standalone, which has now received its own sequel, if not one that has birthed a franchise on the level of Saw.

Synopsis: The streets of N.Y. might be temporarily silent, but in downtown Manhattan in the early 90’s, they were the site of a dynamic collision between two vibrant subcultures: skateboarding and hip hop. Jeremy Elkin’s documentary, All The Streets Are Silent, narrated by Eli Morgan Gesner, brings to life the magic of this time period and the convergence that created an urban style and visual language that would have an outsized and lasting cultural effect. If Paris Is Burning and Kids had a baby, you’d have this documentary love letter to New York—examining race, society, fashion and street culture—and full of archival footage featuring legendary characters and figures from the downtown scene. Featuring Rosario Dawson, Harold Hunter, Justin Pierce, Keith Hufnagel, Darryl McDaniels (Run-d.M.C.), Jefferson Pang, Bobbito Garcia, Stretch Armstrong, Kool Keith, Leo Fitzpatrick, Mike Hernandez, DJ Clark Kent, Kid Capri, Mike Carroll,...

If there are two things many horror fans love, they’re elaborate violence and horrific suffering. Both of these can be expected from The Collected, for which the first few images have now been released.
Despite lacking any numerical designation, The Collected is actually the third in a series that began with The Collector in 2009 and continued with The Collection in 2012. Written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan and directed by the latter, the movie titles refer to the actions of a masked madman who is a collector of people, taking one person from each place he invades and killing the rest.
The first film follows a handyman who attempts to steal a valuable ruby from his rich employers to pay off a debt to loan sharks, only to discover the family have been imprisoned and their house littered with traps preventing them from leaving and horrifically killing or mutilating the unwary.

The end is growing ever closer for CBS’ Criminal Minds. And that means big decisions loom for many of those who have called the Bau home for the better part of a decade and a half.
This Wednesday at 10/9c — airing at a later time, leading out of Survivor‘s two-hour season opener — the long-running crime drama serves up its antepenultimate hour, during which not one but two agents will be met with career decisions to make. Exclusive: Oscar and Palme d’Or-winning Danish director Bille August (Pelle The Conqueror) is teaming up with U.S. producer David Brown’s fledgling outfit Clear Horizon on historical drama A War Of Their Own about two of the first women to serve as ambulance drivers on the front lines during WWI. Clear Horizon will co-produce and handle world sales at the Afm.
The film is inspired by the remarkable story of British women Mairi Chisholm and Elsie Knocker, who became nurses and ambulance drivers during World War One. The duo won numerous medals for bravery and saved many soldiers on the Western Front in Belgium. Chisolm first got the job as ambulance driver when she was spotted making hair-pin bends on her motorbike in London as a courier. After the war, despite failing health as a result of her exploits on the front, she briefly took up car racing.

Marcus Dunstan’s The Collector series is one of the most overlooked and under-appreciated franchises in the modern horror genre, so it was somewhat of a pleasant surprise when a third installment was officially announced earlier this month. Now, just a few weeks later, the upcoming threequel has an official title and a brand new poster.
Initially teased as The Coll3ctor, the film’s new one-sheet actually reveals a much cleaner title: The Collected. Not much else can be learned from the poster, but we do know that Dunston and his writing partner Patrick Melton have returned to write the script, which aims to start production this fall. The Collected will also bring back Josh Stewart and Emma Fitzpatrick as Arkin and Elena, their respective roles from the franchise’s previous movies.

Here at We Got This Covered, we love R-rated American horror films. After all, they’re becoming increasingly hard to find these days, but whenever one releases theatrically and nationwide, we’ll always be there to support it.
That leads us to Marcus Dunstan’s The Collector and its sequel, The Collection. Dunstan and writer Patrick Melton’s Saw-meets-slasher flicks were loaded with practical blood and enough gore to satisfy any horror fan and yet, they went relatively unnoticed at the time of their release.
Thankfully, then, in the years since, both efforts have found a cult following of sorts, with many now seeing The Collector as “an effectively-made low-budget horror movie that took a creative spin on the Saw mentality” and The Collection presenting a solid house-of-horrors blood-bath. And so, that’s why we’re beyond thrilled to learn today that a third film is now in the works.

As Arkin in The Collector and The Collection, Josh Stewart navigated the kinds of traps that you would find in a Freddy Krueger dream, but in his new film Back Fork, Stewart faces a nightmare that's all too real: the opioid epidemic in the United States, particularly in West Virginia. The Mustang is an impressive indie prison drama marking the directional debut of French actress Laure De Clermont. It tells a moving story based on a real program involving inmates and wild horses.
The Mustang is the story of Roman Coleman (Matthias Schoenaerts), an inmate at a Nevada State prison and a man of few words. Not only does his bald and hulking physique make for a threatening presence, his terse and brooding disposition adds to his menace. He’s a heavily-tattooed caged brute doing stints in and out of solitary confinement. His crime isn’t revealed until near the film’s end but it’s hinted that his beastly exterior masks a deep anguish. His relationship with his pregnant daughter Martha (Gideon Adlon), who visits, is strained, and he even loses his temper when she comes to ask him to sign some papers. She wants to make a better...
