Paramount Pictures has a few successful franchises, but the studio's apparent inability to do more with Star Trek is beyond confusing.
When J.J. Abrams relaunched the franchise in 2009, the stage was set for it to become a mainstream property, something which looked increasingly likely when the sequels - Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond - were also moderate box office hits. Unfortunately, Star Trek 4 has been stuck in development hell for several years.
Filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Matt Shakman, Lindsey Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet are just some of the names who have been attached to the movie in recent years, with none of them ultimately sticking around.
Now, with it seemingly no closer to becoming a reality, it seems Paramount's next prequel project is finally taking shape.

Veteran producer Simon Kinberg, who oversaw most of the “X-Men” movies for 20th Century Fox, is in talks to produce an upcoming “Star Trek” movie for Paramount Pictures, Variety has confirmed.
The project has already been in development at the studio for some time, with Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) handing the screenplay and Toby Haynes on board to direct. Insiders say the film is intended as an origin story for the main timeline of the “Star Trek” franchise, set in the aftermath of humanity’s first contact with aliens.
Kinberg started his career as a screenwriter, penning 2005’s “XXX: State of the Union” and “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” before joining the “X-Men” franchise as a co-screenwriter of 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” He transitioned to producing every subsequent “X-Men” film, and he made his directorial debut with the final movie in the franchise, 2019’s “Dark Phoenix.” He...

As Crystal Palace in Steve Yockey’s Dead Boy Detectives, Kassius Nelson has added another layer of intrigue to her acting career. She stars alongside George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri in the Netflix series, which has given her career a new lease on life. The supernatural dramedy isn’t the breakthrough role of the English actress who has been active on-screen since the early 2010s. She was first seen as Heather in Jordan Foster’s 2013 drama film Lone Rivers, before debuting on television as Jade Albright in Hollyoaks. Also a stage performer, Kassius Nelson consolidates her growing reputation with her exciting interpretation

On April 25, a new series was released that all fans of Neil Gaiman's work have been waiting for an incredibly long time. After all, this is not just a live-action adaptation of one of the famous American author's works, but a story that takes place in the same universe as The Sandman! We are, of course, talking about Dead Boy Detectives, a young adult comedy-drama that skillfully combines elements of occult detective and supernatural horror.
The new series has pleasantly impressed critics and audiences alike, with an astounding 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But despite fan love, rave reviews, and the top spot on Netflix's regional charts, Dead Boy Detectives doesn't seem to be getting the ratings it deserves. Unfortunately, all of this puts the show at risk of cancellation.

It was recently revealed that, after a successful few years on streaming, Paramount Pictures is finally making moves to bring the Star Trek franchise back to theaters. However, a fourth instalment in the J.J. Abrams-produced franchise getting yet another writer is news to lead star Chris Pine.
The actor first played Captain Kirk in 2009's Star Trek, later reprising the role in 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond.
Abrams sharing plans for a fourth instalment a few years back left most of the cast scratching their heads as none of them were signed up to appear at the time. Now, after several aborted launches, Steve Yockey is the latest scribe to take a crack at the screenplay.
Asked about that by Business Insider (via SFFGazette.com), Pine said, "I honestly don’t know. There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board.

The Star Trek franchise has been on the brink of uncertainty for quite some time now. Even lead actor Chris Pine has no clue whatsoever about the progress of the upcoming project. In fact, he even thought once that the franchise might be “cursed.”

The film we’ll call Star Trek 4 has a new screenwriter, but it seems that nobody at Paramount told Chris Pine. “I thought there was already a script,” he said.
One of the fascinating elements in Paramount’s near decade-long attempt to make a sequel to Star Trek Beyond is Chris Pine’s response to the meandering saga.
Last November, when asked about the status of what we’ll call Star Trek 4 for now, the Captain Kirk actor simply said, “I don’t know anything. In Star Trek land, the actors are usually the last people to find out anything. I know costume designers that have read scripts before the actors.”
A few months later – in March 2024, to be more precise – it was announced that Paramount and Bad Robot had embarked on a new attempt to make a sequel to 2016’s Star Trek: Beyond. The film would bring...

Chris Pine was taken by surprise when news hit that Steve Yockey, creator of the Max series “The Flight Attendant,” had signed on to write the script for “Star Trek 4.” Why? “I thought there was already a script,” the actor recently told Business Insider during an interview on his “Poolman” press tour.
Pine’s not wrong, as a potential “Star Trek 4” has gone through multiple iterations in the years since the 2016 release of “Star Trek Beyond.” Pine took on the role of Captain Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 franchise reboot “Star Trek,” and reprised the character in 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness” and 2016’s “Beyond.” Variety exclusively reported in March that Paramount Pictures remained committed to making a fourth “Star Trek” film to be headlined by Pine and his co-stars.

William Shatner recently told Canadian Press that he wouldn’t rule out returning as Captain Kirk in a new “Star Trek” project if the script impressed him. While the actor’s age might pose an issue as Shatner turned 93 years old in March, that’s nothing a bit of de-aging technology couldn’t fix.
“It’s an intriguing idea,” Shatner said about returning as Kirk. “It’s almost impossible. But if was a great role and so well-written and if there were a reason to be there not just to make a cameo appearance, but if there were a genuine reason for the character appearing, I might consider it.”
Shatner suggested that he could play a younger version of the Starship Enterprise captain through de-aging technology, similar to how 80-year-old Harrison Ford turned up as a much younger Indiana Jones (circa the character’s age in “Raiders of the Lost Ark...

Twenty years ago, Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s breakout hit The O.C., about a group of teens coming of age in Newport Beach, premiered on Fox. By the time the 27-episode first season aired its finale in the spring of 2004, the show was the highest-rated drama on TV among adults 18 to 34 and had catapulted its stars — whose characters were affectionately known as the “Core Four” — to massive, near-overnight popularity.
It wouldn’t be the first or last young adult series in the U.S. to generate a cultural frenzy. But the industry ecosystem that birthed and defined zeitgeisty YA shows like it — 22-episode drama series with largely white casts found through in-person auditions — is vanishing. As viewers have increasingly abandoned broadcast and cable TV, the linear networks these shows called home (Fox, The WB, Upn, The CW, MTV and Freeform) have also faced mergers, acquisitions, multiple rebrands or given...

For us The Sandman fans who yearned for a second season of Neil Gaiman's most enigmatic TV project, Dead Boy Detectives was a life-saver. The new Netflix show that follows the adventures of two ghosts who prefer solving supernatural mysteries to enjoying their afterlife is a fantastic addition to the already rich universe of The Sandman.
The spinoff somehow manages to be very similar and very different to its parent show at the same time. Despite the shared universe and the general The Sandman-esque vibe, Dead Boy Detectives is much more light-hearted and, if we may, fun.
Still, it was a real treat for fans to go full "meme Dicaprio" mode when they saw literally anything — or anyone — directly from The Sandman. The first Endless cameo awaited us right in the first episode, when Kirby Howell-Baptiste's Death arrived to collect a soul and Charles and Edwin had...

Recently, the television industry as a whole has taken a huge step forward in terms of inclusivity. We now have access to a whole variety of series in different genres that include queer characters, characters of color, disabled characters, and every other oppressed group as equals.
While the fight is far from over, it's good to see yet another popular show explore the sexuality of its characters without detracting from the plot. Dead Boy Detectives made sure to highlight Edwin's first steps in accepting his queer identity. This has also led to a lot of speculation about his relationship with Cat King.

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” The show premiered on April 25th (you can read our review Here) – and to mark the occasion, a new addition to the team here at JoBlo.com, Kyanna Mondezie, was given the opportunity to conduct interviews with several members of the cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Kassius Nelson, and Yuyu Kitamura. You can hear what they had to say about their experience working on the show by checking out the video embedded above. Also interviewed were series creator Steve Yockey and showrunner Beth Schwartz.

Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin (George Rexstrew) would move heaven and earth and the entire underworld for each other. In Dead Boy Detectives, the duo spends their afterlife solving mysteries for the undead, but the love they have for each other is at the heart of the show. Somewhere during their decades together, Edwin’s feelings for Charles started to shift. He develops romantic feelings for his best friend and eventually confesses his love after Charles rescues him from Hell. Co-showrunner Steve Yockey tells TV Insider that the “goal” of the first season was always to “tell the story of Edwin’s discovery of his identity. And not just the discovery of his identity after 100 years of being dead, but 60 years of that spent in Hell.” As you see in the first season, Edwin begins to recognize his sexual identity for the first time. Since Edwin lived during the Edwardian era,...

Neil Gaiman doesn’t create singular worlds. Instead, he produces an entire universe held together by the gravitational force of his imagination.
Dead Boy Detectives, the new series based on Gaiman’s teenage ghost duo Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland (Jayden Revri), exists within the same narrative reality as The Sandman. The undead detectives solve mysteries and fight demons and witches, while trying to evade the attention of Death (Kirby) herself. The series, developed for television by Steve Yockey — who serves as co-showrunner alongside Beth Schwartz — lives on its own, but the influence of The Sandman radiates throughout.

In Season of Mists, the fourth volume of The Sandmancomics series, Neil Gaiman penned a ghost story set in a British boarding school to demonstrate the problems being caused by Lucifer’s plan to get back at Dream. Gaiman liked the characters enough that he brought them back for a Vertigo Comics crossover event, and they wound up receiving their own spin-off comic from Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham.
Now, the Dead Boy Detectives are receiving their own show from Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz. Set in the same universe as The Sandman, this series follows all the zany thrills and heartwarming moments of Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin’s (George Rexstrew) adventures solving supernatural mysteries that no one else can, with the help of clairvoyant Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and new friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura).
“Charles was more or less me as a boy,” executive producer and Sandman author Gaiman tells Tudum.

Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland are DC comic book characters created by Neil Gaiman, but they have a lot more in common with the Winchesters than meets the eye.
To understand the Netflix take on Dead Boy Detectives, you have to first understand how the show arrived on the streamer in the first place. It was originally intended as a spin-off of Doom Patrol after Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant portrayed the ghostly sleuthing duo in Season 3. Steve Yockey (Supernatural) was developing the series when Max dropped it because it didn't fit in with new DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran's vision for the DC cinematic universe.

Dead Boy Detectives was initially developed for television by HBO Max in 2021. After a long and winding road of purgatory, the series eventually is reaching Netflix in early 2023. (Please note that this has nothing to do with Netflix licensing Max properties as of late.) The adaptation of DC Comics has a cult following that can tap into every popular young demographic.
Now, every comic book property will continuously develop in the ever-competitive streaming landscape. This makes it more surprising how ordinary, at times, Dead Boy Detectives can be, considering Netflix’s binge model. Dead Boy Detectives is like a purgatory Hardy Boys procedural, with the boys trying to solve a new case weekly.
However, as the series progresses, you see its overall potential. You hope the streaming giant will allow Dead Boy Detectives to achieve that potential.

In theory, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives should be a feast for the misery wraiths, faceless creatures who feed on pain and suffering. The ghostly protagonists, Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri), are both teenagers bullied to death at the same British boarding school seven decades apart. They spend their time finding closure for other lost souls, like a pair of high schoolers cut down in their prime or a family slaughtered by an abusive patriarch. And they’re constantly on the run from the agents of Death, who would condemn Edwin to Hell on a technicality.
Yet the duo only ever encounter one such monster over the eight-episode first season, and perhaps that’s because despite its gloomy-sounding premise, Dead Boy Detectives is the furthest thing from dour. Dark, sure; bittersweet, sometimes. But it’s never less than entertaining, thanks to an appealingly quirky lead cast and a cheeky sense of humor.

“Dead Boy Detectives” threads a very specific tonal needle. Based on the Neil Gaiman graphic novels, the new Netflix series follows two dead teens — Edwin and Charles, played by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri — and their flourishing careers as P.I.s who help other ghosts with unfinished business while trying to avoid Hell.
“We created a darkly comedic horror mystery,” co-creator (with Beth Schwartz) Steve Yockey told IndieWire. “We were always trying to make the Hardy Boys on acid, basically. As long as you stay grounded with the emotional stories, then you can go crazy with everything else.”
Over the course of eight episodes, “Dead Boy Detectives” does just that. Part of the series’ thrill is found in its opening credits, which distill the essence of the show’s tone into #friendgoals as two skeletons cavort and frolic while ominous Easter eggs proliferate. Captain's Log: Stardate 2024. It's been eight years since the USS Enterprise's last voyage on the big screen, with the franchise having since returned to its roots on television. During that period, the property has proliferated thanks to an influx of streaming series that's included everything from a "Next Generation" reunion to a raunchy cartoon and a wonderfully silly musical episode. But through it all, the question has lingered: when will Trekkies get to undertake another mission painted on the largest canvas available?
It's not been for lack of effort on Paramount's part. Today, Netflix debuted the official trailer for Dead Boy Detectives, premiering globally on Netflix on Thursday, April 25.
The eclectic composition of characters, based on the beloved comics by Neil Gaiman and brought to life by co-showrunners Steve Yockey and Beth Schwartz, provides the series with fun, whimsy, humor, and fantastical horror that all come together in perfectly imperfect harmony.
Try not to fall in love with the dead boy detectives and their crew in this trailer as they solve mystifying paranormal cases to the tune of a wonderfully nostalgic rendition of My Chemical Romance’s anthemic ode to the afterlife, “Welcome to the Black Parade.”
Do you have a pesky ghost haunting you? Has a demon stolen your core memories? You may want to ring the Dead Boy Detectives.

With shows like “American Gods,” “Good Omens,” and Netflix’s “Sandman” series based on his works, author Neil Gaiman has really been leading the charge for fantasy shows in the streaming age. And yet Another series adaptation of his work is coming to Netflix on April 25, helping to expand “The Sandman” universe. Netflix has released a new trailer for the upcoming “Dead Boy Detectives,” created by co-showrunners Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) and Beth Schwartz (“Sweet Tooth,” “Arrow”) and based on DC Comics/Vertigo characters that Gaiman and Matt Wagner created in the early 1990s (the sibling supernatural sleuths first appeared in the pages of Gaiman’s “The Sandman” back in 1991).

Once set up at the Max streaming service, the TV series Dead Boy Detectives, which is based on characters Neil Gaiman created for DC Comics in the pages of The Sandman issue #25, is now calling Netflix its home, having moved away from Max last year because it “doesn’t fit with DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran’s plans for the Dcu.” Netflix has set an April 25th premiere date for the show, and with that date just a few weeks away, a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above to see the titular characters deal with paranormal cases while My Chemical Romance plays on the soundtrack.
Since these characters were introduced in the comic book The Sandman, it seems fitting that they ended up on Netflix, as the streamer is also home to the live-action The Sandman series.

Sometimes the past just won’t let you go. One of the more persistent conversations that has buoyed several decades worth of nerd conversations is the old "Star Trek" vs. "Star Wars" saw. Do you, dear reader, prefer stern diplomacy, mechanically inclined stories, ethical dilemmas, and constant reference to classic literature of the Western Canon? Then "Star Trek" is for you. You may, however, prefer fable-like tales of derring-do, heroic space-bound violence, and archetypal myths of good vs. evil. If you like your sci-fi to have an ancient flavor and fantastical elements out of King Arthur, then you may prefer "Star Wars."
Which one is better? The answer, of course, is "Star Trek." But which one is more successful and widespread? Frustratingly, the answer is "Star Wars." "Star Trek" has long been more successful on TV, telling hour-long morality tales and pushing up against low budgets. It was about multiculturalism and equality. "Star Wars," meanwhile, got its mileage from simple tales of violent victory,...

Zoe Saldaña was asked on an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast if she was “done” playing Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now that James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy has ended. The name behind this latest attempt is screenwriter Steve Yockey, who’s best known for TV series The Flight Attendant – a comedy murder mystery starring Kaley Cuoco. Yockey also wrote episodes of Supernatural and the Scream TV spin-off series.
Nothing else is known about the project at present, though Variety reports that Paramount hopes to get the core cast first established in 2009’s Star Trek, which also includes Zoe Saldana and John Cho. The glaring exception will of course be Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away in 2016.
