It was but one year ago when Jamie Lee Curtis became an Oscar winner, taking home the trophy for best supporting actress thanks to her work in the night’s eventual best picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” Back at the Oscars this year as a presenter, Curtis said during Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv that last year’s win changed her career in ways that can’t even be measured.
“In really incalculable ways,” Curtis said when Variety’s Marc Malkin asked how the Oscar win changed her career. “I’m making a movie with James L. Brooks right now! I’ve been asked to work with people that I never thought I’d get asked to work with. James L. Brooks being one of them…it’s hard to put into words. But the good feeling that I’ve had from all over the world has changed me.

The 2023 blockbuster had an ensemble cast with Ryan Gosling as one of the Kens. While Ryan and America Ferrera got nominated for the Oscars 2024, Margot and Greta were not. “I’m still preparing,” Rachel Brosnahan said Saturday on the SAG Awards red carpet about her big role as Lois Lane in James Gunn’s DC movie Superman: Legacy.
“I’m talking to some journalists, I’m reading a lot of comics — so many I hadn’t read before,” added the actress. “It’s been really fun to dig into this universe.”
Watch the conversation below.
Deadline’s chat with Brosnahan on the red carpet tonight comes in the wake of Gunn assembling the entire cast for a photo at the first script reading in Atlanta earlier this week. One of the big surprises was seeing Nicholas Hoult having already shaved head for his turn as Lex Luthor.
A big deal for Brosnahan during that get-together: “I got to see the suit — and I was blown away!,” said. Suit, meaning not Lane’s but rather the Man of Steel’s...

The BAFTA Awards won’t stream the final four categories live this year, the producers have confirmed. They will instead be broadcast as-live on the BBC with a two-hour delay along with the rest of the awards.
The star-studded three hour ceremony will, as usual, be edited down by an hour to make for a 120-minute run-time. It will also be available to watch on the BBC’s streaming service iPlayer and internationally on streamer BritBox.
Last year, for the first time ever, the show ran with its usual two-hour delay but the final four categories were broadcast live, meaning audiences at home got to watch in real time as Austin Butler picked up the award for best actor for “Elvis,” Cate Blanchett received a best actress gong for “Tar,” Emma Mackey won the Rising Star award and “All Quiet on the Western Front” was crowned best film.

Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2023, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.
Many of the most memorable moments of my life have revolved around cinema. (Let’s not debate whether that is a good thing.) And 2023 was no exception. There was a twentieth-anniversary screening of the mesmerizing Mulholland Drive at Buffalo’s North Park Theatre featuring a performance from the remarkable Rebekah Del Rio. That was a biggie, but many of my most indelible 2023 cinema memories include my children. In July, my wife and our two kiddos had a rare group cinema outing to Barbie on its opening day, and I have rarely seen my then-eight-year-old daughter more genuinely excited to dance the night away. A few weeks earlier my son was similarly pumped for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny—his first (and only) chance to see...

James Gunn took a moment to confirm that Nicholas Hoult will, in fact, be playing Lex Luthor in Superman: Legacy and gave a bit of insight into what fans can expect from his take on the villain.
The co-chair and co-ceo of DC Studios posted a photo of him and Hoult on Threads and shared that the two had dinner to celebrate the official casting.
“I couldn’t be happier,” Gunn wrote. “We went out to dinner last night to celebrate & discuss how we can create a Lex that will be different from anything you’ve seen before and will never forget. ‘But, James, we heard this weeks ago, why didn’t you tell us it was true?’ Because, although we were discussing it, it wasn’t final until a couple days ago and I don’t want to tell you all something that isn’t certain.”

After a remarkable run in theaters, Greta Gerwig’s pop culture phenomenon Barbie is making its way to streaming, having set a premiere date on Max of December 15th.
The highest grossing film in the history of Warner Bros, at a worldwide gross exceeding $1.4 billion, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the “stereotypical” version of the Mattel doll, who comes to suffer an existential crisis after traveling from Barbie Land into the real world with new beau, Ken (Ryan Gosling).
Gerwig directed from her script written with Noah Baumbach. Pic’s starry ensemble also includes America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Ariana Greenblatt, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emerald Fennell, among others.

The announcement of a new James L Brooks film has insiders suggesting it’s the ‘herald’ of a potential sequel to The Simpsons movie…
The long-running TV version of The Simpsons may not possess the cultural relevance it once did, but the feature-length film that released back in 2007 did gangbusters business for what was then 20th Century Fox, grossing over half a billion dollars – and that’s just theatrically.
In the years since, the possibility of another film has sometimes been floated, but we’ve never seen anything come to fruition – until now perhaps.

The catalyst for the current rumours lie with series producer, James L Brooks. 20th Century Studios (formerly 20th Century Fox) has green-lit a new venture by the producer, a dramedy project titled Ella McKay, starring Sex Education actor Emma Mackey.

Following the box office success of Barbie, there’s been a lot of chatter about a potential sequel that would see Margot Robbie reprise the titular character role.
However, in a new interview, Robbie seems to shoot down any possibilities of a follow-up to the Greta Gerwig-directed film.
“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” Robbie told the Associated Press in an interview. “Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Barbie made over $1.4 billion at the box office and Robbie also reflected on the success of the film noting that “original films can still hit huge.”
“It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,” Robbie continued. “It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that.

For many younger film fans, the name James L. Brooks might not hold much significance. Probably, this has much to do with the fact that most of his most influential work was at least 25 years ago, and Brooks hasn’t directed a film since 2010. That said, if you’re not familiar with his work, it is important to know that Brooks is one of the most respected and influential filmmakers of the past 30 years.

In the thirteen years since his last directorial feature, James L. Brooks has stayed busy helping emerging filmmakers like Kelly Fremon Craig realize their visions with the stellar The Edge of Seventeen and this year’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Thankfully, the 83-year-old filmmaker is now getting behind the camera once again for a long-awaited directorial feature.
Brooks is set to kick off production on Ella McCay, a 20th Century Studios project, by the end of the year. Set to star Emma Mackey, the romantic drama follows an “idealistic politician poised to run governor as she deals with lingering family issues.” The project was mentioned in the latest issue of Production Weekly and confirmed by the Boston Globe and Providence Journal, both based near where the film is set to shoot.

“Barbie” triumphed at the box office. Can it conquer the Oscars too?
If history is any guide, it may have to settle for the adoration of audiences over the acclaim of awards voters. The Academy has nominated some recent commercial juggernauts for best picture — last year “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick” made the cut. But it tends to hand out the top prize to movies that hail from the art house, not the blockbuster part of the business. In fact, it’s been 20 years since the highest-grossing domestic film was also the best picture winner. That last happened with 2003’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” which took all 11 categories in which it was nominated.

There's no doubt about it: Ncuti Gatwa is having a bit of a moment. 2023 has been a big year for the Rwandan–Scottish actor, with the final season of his breakout hit show "Sex Education" hitting the airwaves right after he appeared alongside A-listers as one of the Kens in "Barbie." Now, he's well on his way to leading-man status, including an upcoming stint as one of the UK's most famous characters. Although his onscreen career is just getting started, he's already starred in a few very recognizable TV shows and movies. Here's everywhere you can catch him so far - and where he'll be appearing next.

In a world that has gifted Greta Gerwig the possibility to focus all her creative skills and talents on Barbie, the film becomes the pink dream we all hoped it would be. After months and months of their marketing campaign, which often felt like seeing a sea of pink slowly wash towards us, the creators behind Barbie were right to put everything they had into getting people into the theatres to see this on the big screen. Not only does Barbie reach something on a creative and entertaining level, but it touches deeper and lingers on the mind longer than any movie about a doll has the right to.

John Carpenter said he is still surprised that he watched the Barbie movie this summer.
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, published online Tuesday, the writer-director-composer was asked if he ever goes to a theater to watch a movie. He explained that he hadn’t “been to a movie in a while” but that he watches them at his house, including the highest-grossing movie of the year, Barbie.
“I can’t believe I watched Barbie,” Carpenter said. “It’s just not my generation. I had nothing to do with Barbie dolls. I didn’t know who Allan was. I mean, I can sum it up. She says, ‘I don’t have a vagina,’ and then at the end, ‘I’m going to go to a gynecologist!’ That’s the movie to me.”
The Halloween director also noted that some parts of Greta Gerwig’s record-breaking film went “right over my head.

Barbie converted the summer into a dance party when the musical comedy turned most theater tickets pink, earning $1.4B worldwide! The film presents the iconic blonde bombshell in ways we’ve never seen while taking Mattel to task for decades of questionable motivation concerning its portrayal of “toys for girls.” To Mattel’s credit, the legendary toy company leans into Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s biting script, giving the Hollywood couple plenty of room to play in Barbie Land. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from the fourth and final season of “Sex Education.”
When “Sex Education” premiered in 2019, it followed a timid teenager with progressive ideals, trying to lead the student body of his repressive high school to sexual liberation. By 2023, when Netflix released the fourth and final season, all of that had changed.
Moordale Secondary School shuts down at the end of Season 3, so Season 4 takes place in a whole new world. Most of our characters end up at Cavendish College, which is Moordale’s complete opposite. It’s a “student-led” campus where the kids make all the decisions. The queer kids are the cool ones, and anyone trying to attain it-girl status with meanness and exclusivity ends up at the bottom of the social pyramid.

Time was that in a romantic comedy, the leads always ended up together.
That’s changed over time as audience and narrative priorities shift, and as television dove deeper into the rom-com game along with film, finding ways to unite, separate, and permute every pairing while filling out hours and hours of story. A lot of sitcoms spin that into classic TV romance; Ross and Rachel, Cory and Topanga, Jess and Nick. In recent years, the trend has skewed toward getting a couple together and keeping them together; Jake and Amy, David and Patrick, Janine and Gregory.
And then there is the Secret Third Thing, the rare and difficult move where a show pairs its lead character or characters off with someone who wasn’t the original plan. Sometimes there are outside factors (“Cheers” comes to mind), while other times it’s simply a more desirable story development.

“I think the show definitely could have continued,” Laurie added. “I think that all of the actors are obviously much older now. We’re all much older than when we started, so I think with a teen show, there’s always a...

[This story includes major spoilers from the Sex Education series finale.]
The final moments of Sex Education saw the show’s core characters rally behind one of their own and begin their paths into the next chapter of their lives.
In the series finale of the Netflix series, the students at Cavendish Sixth Form College discover their classmate Cal (Dua Saleh) has gone missing, and they join forces to find their friend and bring them home safely. When Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling) find Cal, they realize they’ve been neglecting their friend who has been struggling with body dysmorphia amid their transition because they can’t afford top surgery.
Instead of raising money for the soup kitchen run by Eric’s church, which does not want money from LGBTQ students, the school decides to donate the money from the fundraiser to Cal so they can complete their transition.

One of the biggest stars of hit Netflix series Sex Education has been the Norwegian-inspired chalet home of lead characters Otis (Asa Butterfield) and his mother Jean (Gillian Anderson), and now the house is for sale, as the show’s finale beckons.
The BBC reports that the property where all the exteriors of the house, which overlooks the River Wye, are shot is in Symonds Yat, Herefordshire, UK, has gone on the market for £1.5million ($1.83m).
The house, a former salmon fishing lodge built in the 18th century, has drawn fans since it first featured in the comedy-drama in 2019.
The five-bedroomed property is described by the real estate agent’s website as “quite exceptional with stunning views of the Wye Gorge,” complete with balcony terraces, a new conservatory extension and the prospect of buying a small chapel in the grounds.

Watch out! This article contains spoilers for "Sex Education" seasons three and four.
Going into "Sex Education" season four, I definitely thought Ruby (Mimi Keene) and Otis (Asa Butterfield) would end up together. Maeve (Emma Mackey) and Otis were always wrong for each other - his obsession with her always felt a little too close to idealization, and their chemistry was also never actually so great; it always felt to me like they were too different from each other to really work, and the scenes where they finally did get together just felt awkward to watch.
Meanwhile, Ruby and Otis's relationship was one of the sweetest parts of season three. He seemed to help her relax and open up, while she helped him get himself together and strive for greatness. They just seemed to work, and like many other fans, my heart broke when Otis rejected Ruby the minute Maeve became an option.

“Sex Education” is saying goodbye, with the fourth and final season dropping on Netflix last week.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Alyssa McClelland discussed her contributions to the swan-song season, and why she feels the series finale will satisfy the show’s fans.
“It’s the theme of showing people that an ending is Ok, and that actually an ending in a lot of ways will lead to a new beginning. It’s about sitting in the ending and feeling it, not running away from it. I remember being younger and thinking an ending was world-ending; any ending just felt a lot more intense. Then, as you get older, and you’ve had a few more endings in different forms, you get a bit more hardened to them,” McClelland said.

In its fourth and final season, Netflix’s Sex Education gets a makeover. Sex therapist sidekick Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) tries on a glittered kilt. “It girl” Ruby (Mimi Keene) dons a pride pin. And Cavendish College’s queen bee Abbi (Anthony Lexa) puts on a quilted coat while her partner Roman (Felix Mufti) sports a fresh set of acrylic nails.
With Moordale Secondary School closed for good, the sexually agitated students start at Cavendish College, a student-run, queer-centric, prismatic-colored school that promotes a gossip-free environment with yoga breaks and gender-neutral facilities.

In its four-season run, Netflix’s teen comedy Sex Education has delved into a breadth of issues affecting every manner of teenager: asexuality, abortion, premature ejaculation, consent, assault, and the wide and wonderful world of vulvas.
