Prestige indie banner See-Saw Films are lining up a biopic of Tenzing Norgay, the legendary Nepalese-Indian mountaineer who summited Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, becoming one of the first men to stand on the top of the world.
Variety has learned that “Tenzing” will star Tom Hiddleston as Hillary with Norgay’s casting yet to be unveiled. Willem Dafoe will also star in the film, which is being introduced to buyers at Cannes with Rocket Science launching sales.
The feature is being directed from Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedon, who comes with some solid experience in the mountaineering field having helmed the 2015 documentary “Sherpa.” Fellow Australian Luke Davies wrote the script.
Having landed numerous awards for “The Power of the Dog,” See-Saw Films has been relatively quiet on the feature front recently, with its TV output — particularly its hits “Slow Horses” and “Heartstopper” — getting much of the attention. However,...

Mubi has kicked off its 2024 Cannes Film Festival early and in style, acquiring worldwide rights to one of the buzziest films set to premiere in competition.
The arthouse distributor, production banner and streamer has landed Coralie Fargeat’s body horror “The Substance,” starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Denis Quaid, picking up all rights for North America, U.K., Ireland, Germany, Austria, Latin America and Benelux, where it will release theatrically this year. After making the leap to narrative filmmaking last year with “Nyad,” Oscar winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have returned to their documentary roots and are currently at work in the edit suite prepping their next doc feature — “Lost in the Amazon” (working title), about how four Indigenous children survived for 40 days in the Amazon jungle after a plane crash in 2023. The story of their disappearance and eventual recovery transfixed the global media.
Vasarhelyi and Chin co-directed and produced the film with Colombian filmmaker Juan Camilo Cruz for National Geographic.
The feature docu will tell the story of the struggle for survival of the four children — who ranged in age from 11 months to 13 years — in the guerilla-held jungles of Colombia after a plane they were aboard crashed and killed their mother. The children survived for 40 days in the deep Amazonian rainforest using their Indigenous knowledge of the jungle and the...

Chris Pine earned some of the worst reviews of his career for “Poolman,” a Los Angeles-set comedy mystery in the vein of “Chinatown” that Pine directed, co-wrote and starred in. The movie is Pine’s feature directorial debut, but it got eviscerated by critics when it premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Variety critic Owen Gleiberman called it an “absurdist disaster,” for instance.
Making the press rounds to support the “Poolman” theatrical release, Pine stopped by the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast and refused to believe that he made a complete dud of a movie.
“Criticism as an actor is just a part of the game, but there’s a lot of stuff to hide behind,” Pine said. “There’s the director and the writer and the release pattern, etc. As an actor you come on set and you do your dance and you go off and by...

First things first: Yes, Francis Galluppi is going to be directing a new movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise. And no, he can’t tell you anything about it. He can, however, prove his bona fides as a horror and suspense fan in our Zoom interview by pointing to the “Evil Dead” poster in his office and the “three Necronomicons on my desk.”
Galluppi landed the coveted gig after Sam Raimi saw Galluppi’s feature film debut, “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” the acclaimed thriller that arrives in theaters and on digital this week. Shot in 20 days on a budget of “about a million” dollars, the film is set almost entirely at road stop diner in an unspecified past era where traveling salesmen and rotary phones are still prevalent. As patrons await the arrival of a gas truck, the establishment soon becomes populated with an ensemble of independent film legends,...

Following the overnight success of its British import, “Baby Reindeer,” based on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival show from creator and star Richard Gadd, Netflix is facing pushback from one of the television series’ real-life subjects.
The series features Gadd as a version of himself — an alt-comedian working at a bar whose experiences with sexual assault draws him into conflict with a stalker he names “Martha.” Recently, the real “Martha,” a woman by the name of Fiona Harvey, decided to reveal her identity in an interview with Piers Morgan. While she denies having participated in the behavior portrayed on the show, she explained why she chose to go public with her identity.
“On the internet, sleuths tracked me down and hounded me and gave me death threats,” said Harvey during the interview. “So it wasn’t really a choice. I was forced into this situation.”

Kang who? The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been searching for its next Thanos-level big bad for quite some time now and, while Plan A had to be thrown out the window following actor Jonathan Majors' allegations, Plan B appears to be rounding into form quite nicely. With Kevin Feige appearing to put all his eggs in the "Fantastic Four" basket, officially assembling a core cast made up of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as Marvel's First Family, it was only a matter of time before word leaked out regarding which name-brand actor would step up to take on the physically imposing role of Galactus himself, the Devourer of Worlds.
That time has finally come, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. We now know that Ralph Ineson has answered the call to suit up as the Fantastic Four's biggest and baddest foe in the MCU reboot of the classic property.

Filmmakers are warning that a recent ruling in a copyright suit against Netflix over its “Tiger King” docuseries could restrict the use of video clips in documentaries, and upset a long-held understanding of what constitutes “fair use.”
The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, based in Denver, ruled in March that the use of a 66-second excerpt from a funeral video was not “transformative” under the Copyright Act. The three-judge panel remanded the case to a lower court to determine if Netflix violated the copyright of Tim Sepi, the videographer who shot the scene.
Netflix has petitioned the court to reconsider its decision, and has been joined by the Motion Picture Association, the International Documentary Association, Film Independent, and a host of media law professors in raising alarms about the potential chilling effect on non-fiction storytelling.

The perils and plights of adolescence have long been a source of fascination for television audiences. That’s particularly apparent nowadays with Netflix, HBO, Hulu, Showtime, FX, and others vying for zeitgeist dominance with teen-focused dramas playing to a variety of creative strengths. As narratives have gotten more sophisticated overall across the TV landscape, it makes sense that the ways in which we look at stories about young people have also evolved. From “Never Have I Ever” to “Yellowjackets,” TV teens in 2023 are among some of the most rich ever written.

Jerry Seinfeld revealed during a recent interview on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast (via People) that he wanted Chris Rock to parody the infamous Oscars slap in his feature directorial debut “Unfrosted,” which recently premiered on Netflix. The issue was that Seinfeld filmed the comedy movie not long after the March 2022 Oscars, and Rock was allegedly feeling too “shook” to be able to perform in the movie.
“The other thing I wanted to do that I almost did was Chris Rock was going to be the emcee of the Bowl & Spoon Awards — and we shot that right after the Will Smith slap,” Seinfeld explained. “I was going to have somebody come up on the stage and have Chris punch ’em out as they got there.”

The spectacular "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" (read our review here) goes against the grain of one particular blockbuster trend these days: there are no extra scenes during the credits to set up the next installment of the long-running sci-fi franchise. Yes, the story does have a few dangling narrative threads that can be followed up with another movie, but none of them require any further teeing up. Trying to sell someone on the indie comedy "Hundreds of Beavers" is an exercise in comedic persuasion. Do you talk about how it's a black-and-white movie without dialogue evoking the approach of Charlie Chaplin? Do you highlight the slapstick physical comedy that would make "The Three Stooges" proud? Or do you simply say, "This dude fights people in animal mascot suits in the snow" and let the universe work its magic? First debuting on the festival circuit in 2022 and now finally available on VOD, "Hundreds of Beavers" has quietly become the must-see oddball indie flick for cinephiles everywhere. It's a seemingly algorithm-proof movie that, as /Film's Matt Donato described in his review, exists at the crossroads of Looney Tunes, Benny Hill, "Cannibal: The Musical," "Blazing Saddles," and Adult Swim mindsets. It's also a delightfully Midwest movie, embracing a sense of humor that has been missing from major comedy films for far too long.

From Harrison Ford to Tom Cruise, Hollywood stars have become increasingly comfortable performing stunts in the later stages of their careers. But June Squibb might have set a new standard when she took on the lead role in “Thelma” and did the bulk of her own stunt work at the age of 93.
Josh Margolin’s directorial debut, which is loosely based on a true story about his own grandmother, stars Squibb as a nonagenarian who falls victim to a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson. The injustice inspires her to hop on her motorized scooter and travel across Los Angeles to take down the thief and reclaim her lost funds. The result is an action movie that promises to show audiences that it’s never too late to reclaim agency over your own life.
In addition to Squibb, “Thelma” also features “Shaft” star Richard Roundtree in his final film performance.

In addition to Squibb, “Thelma” also features “Shaft” star Richard Roundtree in his final film performance.

The summer movie season is in need of a hero. Can the director of "A Quiet Place" and the star of "Deadpool" come together to be those heroes? That's the question we're faced with the release of Paramount Pictures' "If," a new, original, family-friendly picture that promises a magical blend of CGI and live-action involving lots of imaginary friends. So, can Krasinski pivot from mid-budget horror to big-budget family films while maintaining the same level of success?
"If" is currently eyeing an opening in the $40 million range when it opens on May 17, per The Hollywood Reporter. Early tracking had the movie falling between $38 and $42 million, though some believe it can go as high as $50 million. That would be an unqualified win for an original movie of any kind right now. That is assuming that the film does, indeed, fall in line with those early expectations. For what it's worth, Box...

Magnolia Pictures has released a brand new trailer for "Thelma." This film may not be on your radar just yet, but after watching this trailer, it probably should be. Serving as the feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, the big hook here is that Oscar-nominee June Squibb is getting to lead a revenge thriller at the age of 94. More than that, it marks the first time that Squibb has been given a leading role in a movie in her long, storied career. Check the trailer out for yourself above.
The trailer is impossibly charming, even though there is an insidious plot at the center of it all. Squibb's character gets scammed out of a bunch of money and, with no options left, she sets out on a path of revenge. It's not unrealistically action-packed or anything like that, but it comes off as quite delightful. Squibb is paired with the late Richard Roundtree,...

It’s a new story, but it’s the same DNA. That’s the clever tag line for the new series “Orphan Black: Echoes,” a spin-off and continuation of the hit series, “Orphan Black” that starred and launched the career of Tatiana Maslany, now known as Marvel’s “She-Hulk.” Set some thirty years later, the series now stars Krysten Ritter, known for “Breaking Bad,” and the Marvel/Netflix series, “Jessica Jones.” Ritter also serves as executive producer and sci-fi thriller will premiere on Sunday, June 23 at 10pm Et/Pt on AMC and BBC America; available to stream on AMC+.

It's been a long time coming but we've finally got our first real look at "Batman: Caped Crusader." The upcoming animated series from "Batman: The Animated Series" co-creator Bruce Timm and producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves has encountered a few setbacks on its journey to release, but is now set to debut on August 1, 2024, on Amazon's Prime Video.
Details about "Batman: Caped Crusader" were first revealed at DC FanDome back in 2021, where we were promised a show that would tell a whole new story rather than continuing where "Btas" left off. Timm also characterized the show as "more 'Batman: [The] Animated Series' than 'Batman: [The] Animated Series,'" revealing that "Caped Crusader" would return to the "original principles" of the '90s show but would have no limitations in terms of "adult content," "violence," and "adult themes." During its 1992 to 1995, "Btas" had to carefully navigate the Fox censors, who...

Welcome back, Clone Club! It's been a little while since our last meeting, but it's once again our time to shine. Every "Orphan Black" fan remembers falling down that sci-fi rabbit hole back throughout the mid-2010s, gawking at the television screen as the series somehow found deeper and more labyrinthine plots to follow with every passing season. As complicated and slightly off the rails as the story could get, those of us who found ourselves on its wavelength ended up among the most passionate members of the fandom. You could commonly find us wandering the street corners and flagging down random passersby, eager to preach about the Good News of Tatiana Maslany and her frankly incredible performance(s) as various clones who couldn't possibly be more different from one another.
Now, perhaps a whole new generation of fans is about to spring up with the release of the spin-off/sequel series,...

Nothing is better when a comedy premise takes you for a loop, and that could easily be the descriptor for Josh Margolin’s “Thelma.” It’s an action comedy that sees a 70-year-old woman as the protagonist seeking revenge on scammers who have impersonated her grandson to get money. Magnolia Pictures has released A new trailer for the film, which is set to be released on June 21, giving us a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming movie.

John Malkovich has joined Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four” in an undisclosed role, Variety has confirmed. The veteran actor joins Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Marvel’s First Family, along with Julia Garner as Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser.
Malkovich has brought his uniquely off-kilter acting style to bear in a prolific career spanning costume drama (like 1988’s “Dangerous Liasons”), studio thrillers (1993’s “In the Line of Fire”), cutting edge indies (1999’s “Being John Malkovich”), wackadoo sci-fi comedies (2005’s “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) and animated family films (2014’s “Penguins of Madagascar”). Most recently, he has appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The New Look” and the Netflix series “Ripley.”

Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Ten weeks deep and “Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia is still processing the success of his shimmering spring TV hit.
“I certainly live in an echo chamber on social media, so I’m seeing lots of ways in which it infiltrated culture,” the executive producer told IndieWire. “But I felt like we really crossed over when I saw that Ramona Singer from ‘Real Housewives’ was dressed for a ‘Palm Royale’-themed cocktail party. That’s when I went, ‘Uh-oh, something has changed here. Something has shifted.'”

Cannes Critics’ Week, now in its 63rd year, is always an opportunity to explore uncharted work from new and emerging filmmakers — and away from the glitter and glitz of the Croisette, where the main competition bows. Recent Critics’ Week Grand Prize winners have included everything from “Tiger Stripes,” a Malaysian coming-of-age debut opening in stateside theaters later this month, to 2019’s honoree “I Lost My Body,” the animated favorite that went on to be nominated for an Oscar.
Coming up in the Special Screenings category of Critics’ Week, Alexis Langlois makes their feature directorial debut with “Queens of Drama,” a French pop/punk musical that brings a mid-aughts camp sensibility to Cannes this year. [Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for the season finale of “The Girls on the Bus.”]
In the Season 1 finale of Max’s “Girls on the Bus,” Sadie (Melissa Benoist) has a tense conversation with Governor Walker (Hettienne Park) that had been building all season. And that’s hardly all.
Walker is a pretty obvious stand-in for Hillary Clinton in the show’s version of a Democratic presidential primary. In Episode 10, written by co-creator Amy Chozick, Walker has just learned that, despite being the most experienced and likely best person for the job, she was going to fall short of getting the necessary delegates to clench the nomination for president. Political journo Sadie comes to speak to Gov. Walker while she’s drowning her sorrows on a campaign bus, and apologizes for how her coverage of her has hurt her over the years — but also lay out her own frustrations about the enigma that is the governor.

In an amusingly meta instance of sci-fi imitating sci-fi, “Orphan Black” is getting a futuristic sequel series before anyone has time enough to miss the original. That’s either a big mistake or more of a good thing in a booming genre that could almost always do with more feminist entries.
Set in the year 2052, “Orphan Black: Echoes” stars executive producer Krysten Ritter as an amnesiac woman named Lucy who we meet unraveling the insidious impacts of a mysterious procedure she doesn’t remember having. It looks like Snake Plissken will be trapped in New York a bit longer: a planned reboot of the John Carpenter classic "Escape From New York" has lost its directors again, according to ComicBook.com. In what could have easily been the next season of “American Crime Story,” Lionsgate Television is diving into the gambling scandal that’s rocked Major League Baseball since March.
Lionsgate is developing a scripted series about how Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, became the subject of massive fraud and theft at the hands of his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Just days ago, Mizuhara agreed to plead guilty to accusations he stole almost $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts.

"The Bear" season 3 officially has a release date, and a snazzy first look teaser to go with it. The hit FX and Hulu series that's dominated award season since it premiered in 2022 is back for a third peek into the kitchen of a chaotic Chicago restaurant.
New episodes of the series are set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 27, 2024, close to a year exactly after the show's sophomore season dropped. Despite plenty of fans insisting that the series would be better as a weekly release, the new season is poised to continue its tradition of a single-batch drop, and all 10 episodes will be available that Thursday.
The last season of "The Bear" ended with depressed, highly decorated chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), his intrepid sous-chef turned partner Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), hotheaded cousin Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and the rest of the team behind sandwich joint The Beef poised to successfully open their high-end restaurant.

Marco Bellocchio is the 84-year-old Italian director behind films like “Fists in the Pocket” from 1965, “Vincere” from 2009, and “Devil in the Flesh” from 1986. His strict Catholic upbringing has led him to make films that take a critical eye toward the Church, condemning its politics and documented history of abuse. Now, he is taking the Church to task once again with his latest film, “Kidnapped: The Abduction of Edgardo Mortara,” out May 24 from Cohen Media Group. Watch the trailer, an IndieWire exclusive, below.

By order of the cardinal, they have come to take Edgardo, their seven-year-old son.
