I find it ironic how despite existing on a planet where pretty much every living thing originated in the ocean, one of humanity’s most widespread fears is thalassophobia – the fear of the deep ocean. Whether it’s some form of genetic memory that continues to haunt our species or a natural reaction to witnessing one of the deadliest ecosystems in the world, it’s no surprise storytellers have been taking advantage of this fear for millennia.
And while Jaws obviously dominates the conversation when it comes to underwater horror in film, there are still some intrepid filmmakers that dare to explore other kinds of sea-borne thrills. For example, Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin’s upcoming Deep Water looks like it’s going to take us on another roller-coaster ride directly into shark-infested waters. Say it once, say it twice — but say it a third time and expect an explosion of chaotic supernatural hilarity. That was the premise of "Beetlejuice," the second feature film from director Tim Burton. Released in 1988, the film focused on newly dead couple Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis), whose quaint country house was posthumously sold to Charles and Delia Deetz (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O'Hara). Adam and Barbara, however, remain in their home, as ghosts, horrified by the bizarre architectural changes being made to their beloved home by its obnoxious new owners. Taking advice from "The Handbook for the Recently Deceased," the Maitlands attempt to haunt their unwanted roommates into leaving — a tactic that proves unsuccessful when the Deetzes remain utterly oblivious to their efforts to scare them out.
The Deetz's death-obsessed teenage daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder), can see the Maitlands, and befriends them. Just when all seems hopeless,...

Actor Winona Ryder had a strong start in Hollywood. But the scripts that came her way when she was younger weren’t very flattering to the superstar.

There were certain times where Ryder’s looks worked against the Hollywood film star. Some filmmakers in the industry didn’t view Ryder as conventionally attractive as other actors at the time. When Ryder first started auditioning for roles, a casting director told her that she wouldn’t make it in Hollywood because of this.
“I was in the middle of auditioning, and I was mid-sentence when the casting director said, ‘Listen, kid. You should not be an actress. You are not pretty enough. You should go back to wherever you came from and you should go to school. You don’t have it.

“The thing I love the most about playing Misty is that she’s really somebody who has accepted the fact that she’s never going to be accepted,” says Emmy-nominated “Yellowjackets” star Christina Ricci. “She still has those compulsions that she cannot ignore. The compulsive need to try to be accepted. The compulsive need to go after someone and see if they will be her friend. But I think deep down she understands who she is and the position that she’s been given. Because of that, I don’t think she really understands societal norms.” Watch our video interview above.
Season 2 of “Yellowjackets” is currently airing on Showtime. Ricci’s role as Misty Quigley earned her a Best Supporting Actress Emmy nomination last year. It was one of seven bids for the series including Best Drama Series.

Florence and the Machine has shared a new song, “Mermaids,” which is part of the “universe” of the group’s recent LP Dance Fever.
The track, produced by Dave Bayley, is a darkly layered pop tune that sees Florence Welch singing about the grey English weather, Britney Spears and “cheerful oblivion.” “You haven’t seen nothing/ until you’ve seen an English girl drink,” Welch croons over a propulsive synth beat.
Welch previously teased the new song with several Instagram posts, including one of her in a bathtub wearing a mermaid tail and vampire teeth.

Florence + The Machine have released a dark and dancey new single entitled “Mermaids.” Stream the song below.
With lyrical references to mermaids with “sharp teeth” who come to drink, dance, and “sacrifice a human heart,” the song’s sinister underbelly is contrasted by the angelic beauty of singer Florence Welch’s legendary vocal cords. Cool and confident, she delivers the poetic lines with a similar meter and punch as one of her biggest inspirations, Iggy Pop. When the refrain of “cheerful oblivion” arrives, you can’t help but get caught up in the reflective madness.
The release of “Mermaids” comes after several weeks of teasing the song on social media. At the age of nine, Christina Ricci made her breakout debut in the 1990 film “Mermaids” alongside Cher and Winona Rider. Now, at 43 years old, Ricci has over three decades of credits to her name and could be on the brink of a historic double Emmy nomination for her roles as Misty in the Showtime drama “Yellowjackets” and Marilyn Thornhill in the Netflix comedy “Wednesday.” Bids for both would make her the second woman in history to be nominated for Best Drama Supporting Actress and Best Comedy Supporting Actress in the same year. For our latest dive into recent books on or related to cinema, we’re spending time with some icons––fictional (James Bond) and non. Let’s start with 50 color palettes and one beautifully unique new text.
Colors of Film: The Story of Cinema in 50 Palettes by Charles Bramesco (Frances Lincoln)
Colors of Film is an engrossing study of how filmmakers utilize color in complex, ingenious, emotionally impactful ways. Some of these examples (e.g. the red jacket in Schindler’s List) have inspired much discourse. What makes this book––by the always-entertaining and -intelligent critic Charles Bramesco––so special is its focus on less-obvious films. A noteworthy case: Hype Williams’ Belly and its “flights of stylistic fancy.” During its hyper-stylized opening, as gangsters Buns and Sin “prowl through the dance floor, ceiling-mounted blacklights make the men look extraterrestrial, their eyeballs glowstick-turquoise against deeper blue skin.” Other entries focus on everything...

After all, gorillas were only recognized by science in the 1850s, and don’t even get me started on the extinction-dodging coelacanth. That’s why cryptozoology is such a fascinating subject, with amateur zoologists insisting that there’s still a little bit of magic left in the world.
Of course, not every legendary cryptid creature is as cuddly as the jackelope, and that’s why we’ve come up with this list recommending six underrated movies inspired by cryptozoology! After all, what good are monsters if we can’t enjoy scary movies about them?
As usual, we’ll be following a couple of rules in order to keep things concise. First of all, no double-dipping, which means we’ll only be...

Since making her on-screen debut in "Mermaids" at only nine years old, Christina Ricci has grown into one of the most prolific child stars who successfully made the transition into acting throughout adulthood. The seasoned starlet has always been a professional both on screen and off, captivating audiences with her unique look and diverse talent. For many of us, Ricci's most memorable role was her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in director Barry Sonnenfeld's 1991 film "The Addams Family" and his 1993 sequel "Addams Family Values." Donning raven-colored pigtails, a signature black dress, and flat-affect, Ricci became a generation's beloved personification of cartoonist Charles Addams' character. She not only embodied the role but also confidently asserted herself as an asset to the storytelling process by suggesting an alternate ending to the original "The Addams Family" script, a change that would resonate with audiences even decades later.

Christina Ricci played Wednesday Addams with a biting edge, making the character her own in a definitive way. Wednesday's refusal to fit in strikes a chord with those who relates to her outcast status, and her borderline-sociopathic, deadpan demeanor is, dare I say, iconic for many reasons. Ricci's performance is a clear standout in the 1990s "Addams Family" films, even when stacked up against the movies' solid cast of eccentric characters. There's something curiously creepy about Wednesday, a young girl who rejects socially-expected norms and holds a deep fascination for all things morbid. How did 11-year-old Ricci navigate this layered role?
Ricci made her acting debut in the 1990 family comedy-drama "Mermaids," in which she played the role of Kate Flax while starring alongside a young Winona Ryder. The following year, Ricci assumed the mantle of Wednesday. In an interview with The New Yorker conducted at the top of 2022, Ricci explained...

Christina Ricci is arguably one of the most successful former child actors to have gotten their start in the 1990s, as she has maintained a consistent career since debuting in the film “Mermaids” at the age of 10. Having already played starring roles on the 2010s TV series “Pan Am” and “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” she is now a regular on Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.” Her portrayal of Misty Quigley, a middle-aged nurse who survived a plane crash as a teenager, has given her a popularity boost and could now earn her an Emmy for Best Drama Supporting Actress.

This story about Christina Ricci and “Yellowjackets” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Drama issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Christina Ricci has made her share of comedies over the course of a career that began when she was a child, but her heart has always seemed to be in darker material like “The Ice Storm,” “Buffalo ’66,” “Prozac Nation” and “The Lizzie Borden Chronicles.” So it makes sense that she’d join the cast of the Showtime limited series “Yellowjackets,” playing one of the survivors of a plane crash that happens to a group of high-school girls in a remote wilderness.
The show, which jumps back and forth between the crash and the grown-up characters more than two decades later, is a dark mystery with lots of disquieting elements — but Ricci’s character, Misty, is an awkward and unsociable woman who often brings a comic touch to the show.

As a child, Christina Ricci got a remote life lesson from an unexpected teacher: Johnny Depp. The year was 1989. Ricci was filming the movie Mermaids with Winona Ryder, the actor's girlfriend at the time, and she recalled witnessing a possibly anti-gay confrontation between two other people on set. "Johnny is actually the person who explained to me what homosexuality was when I was 9," Ricci recently told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM's Andy Cohen Live. "There was something going on on-set and someone was not being nice to someone else. And they were like, 'Oh, well he might be homophobic.' And then I was like, 'Well, I don't understand what that...

Prime Video got off to a fast start this summer with the release of The Boys season 3 on June 3. Now, as we enter the dog days, Prime Video is set to keep the warm weather good times rolling with a new twist on an old classic. That’s right, Amazon’s list of new releases for August 2022 is highlighted by some good old-fashioned baseball.
A League of Their Own, the TV adaptation of Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie, is set to premiere on Aug. 12. Like the movie before it, the series will dramatize the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which saw women playing America’s pastime while the major leagues were on pause for World War II. Prime Video will continue rolling out its summer slate in the month of August, releasing new original series, as well as a mix of suspenseful films, action movies and more.
Amazon’s series version of “A League of Their Own” will debut its eight-episode first season on Aug. 12, introducing new characters and stories set in the historical opening of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League (Aagpbl).
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” tells the real-life story of how a young boys’ soccer team was rescued from the Thai mountain cave where they got stuck for 10 days along with their coach.
Other new film arrivals include hits from earlier this summer, “The Lost City” starring Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe, Channing Tatum and Brad Pitt, as well as “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” Academy Award-nominated film “Licorice Pizza” also arrives on Prime Video this month.
Freevee will also have new arrivals this month.

Winona Ryder’s acting chops are not the only contribution she makes to Stranger Things. The Eighties icon also makes sure the scripts stay true to the era.

It didn't take long for Winona Ryder to capture the Academy's attention. In 1990, Mermaids marked the young actress' first brush with awards buzz, and, three years later, The Age of Innocence cashed in on that promise. For playing May Welland, the fiancée, then wife, of Daniel Day-Lewis' Newland Archer, Winona Ryder was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar and probably came quite close to winning. She won the Golden Globe and Anna Paquin's win at the Oscars for The Piano was considered a surprise at the time. And yet, reading reviews from the time and even modern considerations, it's clear that Ryder's performance isn't as universally beloved as her victories might imply. Indeed, it's divisive work…...

Australia’s leading children’s producers are calling for a 20 per cent children’s sub-quota to be placed on streaming platforms, based on an overall 20 per cent revenue-based local content requirement.
The coalition, which includes production companies behind shows like Bluey, Hardball, Little J and Big Cuz, dirtgirlworld and Mako Mermaids, argues in its submission to the Federal Government’s media reform green paper that such a requirement would create at least 2,000 jobs and more than 60 hours of content.
“Even more importantly, this will ensure current and future generations of Australian children of all ages will see themselves, in all their diverse forms, on their screens alongside the masses of ‘foreign’ English-language content,” the group, which consists of 30 companies and calls itself Australian Children’s Producers (Acp), writes.

“Run,” a Lionsgate horror thriller starring Sarah Paulson that was supposed to be released in movie theaters on May 8 in time for Mother’s Day, will now be shown on streaming site Hulu instead. No start date right now, but the scary movie will also be released in select theaters overseas.
The title was pulled from the studio’s release schedule in mid-March in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, when many film release dates were pushed back or switched to becoming a VOD offering or premiering on a streaming site. “‘Ratched’ is done and in the can and comes out in September,” Sarah Paulson reveals to Gold Derby about her highly anticipated Netflix series in which she takes on the villainous role of Nurse Mildred Ratched. The show is based on Ken Kesey‘s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” a novel that also served as the basis for the five-time Oscar-wining 1975 film in which Louise Fletcher portrayed the iconic nurse.
