Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £3.8 million ($4.9 million), according to numbers from Comscore.
In second place, in its fourth weekend, Paramount’s “If” collected £866,474 for a running total of £10.8 million. In third position, in its third weekend, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” earned £729,503 for a total of £7.3 million.

Another weekend in the books, another disappointing opening for a much-anticipated horror movie. Warner Bros. released Ishana Night Shyamalan's "The Watchers" in theaters this past weekend, and given that the daughter of "The Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan was getting into the family business, there was excitement around this one. Unfortunately, the end result left much to be desired in the early going, both critically and commercially.
"The Watchers" opened to an estimated $7 million in its debut domestically. It opened against "Bad Boys: Ride or Die," which easily won the weekend with an impressive $56.5 million opening. Unfortunately, even though this seemed like an example of solid counterprogramming, Shyamalan's mysterious horror flick landed at number four on the charts, also placing behind "The Garfield Movie" ($10 million) and "If" ($8 million). Those movies were in their third and fourth weekends, respectively. Needless to say, this isn't what WB had in mind.

In case you hadn't heard, the summer 2024 box office has been bad. Really, really, really, ridiculously bad. And when a situation is this bad, you need some bad boys to ride in and fix it -- or die trying. As luck would have it, "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" arrived in theaters this weekend, bringing with it the oxygen mask of an estimated $53 million opening weekend. The fourth movie in the action-comedy series starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence brought in $21.6 million on Friday, including $5.9 million from Thursday previews, which puts it on track to slightly outperform early projections (per The Hollywood Reporter).
That number isn't far behind the $61 million debut of "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" during this same weekend a year ago. Under ordinary circumstances, a $53 million opening weekend wouldn't be considered one of the high points of the summer box office, where movies will frequently open north of the $100 million mark.

Pixar has been one of the premiere names in animation ever since the first "Toy Story" released in 1995, changing the game forever. Let’s get the worst of it out of the way: We estimate, at best, a $700 million total domestic gross for June, or 30 percent down from last year. We’ll close the month at least 25 percent below the first half of 2023. There’s no mystery as to why: fewer high-impact releases, with last year’s strikes still taking their toll.
June also has three potential breakouts with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) Friday, “Inside Out 2” (Disney) June 14, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) June 28. They also have high expectations which, if met, would go some way to restoring confidence. Fall short and the argument of “Well, this movie was never meant to be a blockbuster” will have run its course.

It's no secret that the summer box office has not been off to a great start. "The Fall Guy" kicked things off with a disappointing opening weekend before Universal rushed the film to VOD. It got worse with the dual weak performances of both "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" and "The Garfield Movie" more recently. No two ways about it: Things have been bad. But in looking for reasons to be optimistic, we may be able to turn to director John Krasinski's "If." The family-friendly flick opened in mid-May to middling results. It has, however, been legging out better than expected in North America -- so much so that maybe, just maybe, this one has a shot at pulling an "Elemental."

According to IMDb data from the past week, the new Netflix series "Eric" was the most popular title on the site. The disturbing thriller—which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a grieving father and puppeteer—has had sustained interest since its May 30th premiere, thanks to its polarizing effect on audiences, in addition to strong central performances by Cumberbatch and Gaby Hoffman (more on her later).

Plot details are being kept under wraps; Dynevor was confirmed as being in talks to star in May.

Update: (Monday Pm) As noted yesterday, the margin between the 2nd and 3rd place finish for If and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was slim, and in the end, after final figures were reported, their positions at the weekend box office flip-flopped. According to the latest numbers via Deadline, Furiosa made $10.785 million to If‘s $10.5. While that’s only a $285k difference, it gives Furiosa a bit of a better finish, allowing it to reclaim second place, although it trails far behind The Garfield Movie‘s first-place finish with $14 million.

Monday Am: For those keeping track, Paramount’s If did not push Warner Bros.’ Furiosa into third, but the Ryan Reynolds starring, John Krasinski written/produced/directed title did put up a great hold in weekend 3 with -35%. Finals this Am for the top three pics are Sony’s The Garfield Movie at $14M, -42%; Warner Bros’ Furiosa at $10.785M, -59%; and Paramount’s If at $10.5M.

In a not-so-surprising twist, Sony's 'The Garfield Movie' overtook Warner Bros.' Mad Max prequel 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' to claim the top spot at the domestic box office this weekend. After an underwhelming Memorial Day weekend, the lazy, lasagna-loving cat pulled in $14 million from 4,108 theaters for a solid $51.5 million total after two weeks, bringing its worldwide gross to $152 million. Not a bad deal considering the film's $60 million price tag.
Meanwhile, 'Furiosa' fell to third place with $10.7 million, bringing the films domestic haul to a disappointing $49.6 million. Warner Bros.' had high hopes for George Miller’s action epic, with stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth headlining, and it has fared slightly better overseas with $64.7 million for a $114 million worldwide total. But like its predecessor, 2015's 'Mad Max: Fury Road,' its path to profitability looks increasingly rocky with a budget of $168 million. Wedged between 'Garfield' and 'Furiosa' was John Krasinski's family film flick 'IF.' The Paramount release collected $10.8 million in its third week for an $80.4 million domestic tally.
Notable new releases over the weekend include 'Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle,' the big screen anime adaptation of the popular manga with $3.5 million, and IFC Films’ slasher flick 'In a Violent Nature,' which brought in $2.1 million.
Overall, it was another disappointing weekend at the movies. With no major new releases, the total box office was down a sobering 65% compared to the same weekend last year. After an encouraging post-pandemic season in 2023—fueled by the blockbuster duo of 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer'—it’s a grim start to the summer movie season, with year-to-date revenues trailing 2023 by 24% so far. Hollywood is hoping the worst is behind it, though, as June and July have some (hopefully) guaranteed hits with Pixar’s 'Inside Out 2,' Illumination’s 'Despicable Me 4,' and the year's only Marvel movie, 'Deadpool & Wolverine.'

The French box office bounced back in May after an April plunge to reach 15.6 million admissions, up 13.5% from the same month last year.
Ticket sales year on year from January through May are down by 11.6% compared to the same period in 2023 after a slow start to the year and admissions to French cinemas falling by 35.5% in what was an abysmal April.
However, the June-May total of 171 million admissions is equal to the same period year on year. More was merrier for a month when 74 new films were released compared to 63 in 2023.

Lots of ways to describe how bad it is for theaters. Here’s one: A year ago, the #2 film “The Little Mermaid” grossed $41.4 million; this weekend, the top four films grossed $44.4 million combined.
“The Garfield Movie” (Sony) took over #1 with $14 million and a 10-day total about $2 million better than last week’s #1, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.” (Warner Bros.). George Miller’s $160 million-budget prequel dropped 59 percent from a disappointing start and is in a tight battle for #2 with “If” (Paramount). The family fantasy with Ryan Reynolds tentatively stands at $50,000 ahead; to its credit, WB wasn’t aggressive in its estimate. (Tomorrow will tell the actual result).
The good news is that we have touched bottom for the summer, and it will get better from here. Both “Garfield” and “If” had strong holds: “Garfield” dropped 41 percent in its second weekend after a holiday Sunday, and “If” dropped 33 percent and now is at $80 million.

Just like how Robert Downey Jr. is considered pretty much the real-life counterpart of his onscreen Marvel character Tony Stark, Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) is regarded as the comic-book counterpart of his onscreen portrayer, Ryan Reynolds. This is because of all the witty and sarcastic personality traits these two fan-favorites share, both onscreen as well as in real life.

Started way back in 1968, the Planet of the Apes franchise has come a long way from its simian roots. After reboots and new iterations, the series ushered in a new direction following Rupert Wyatt’s 2011 flick, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which introduced the character of Caesar.
Now more than a decade later in actual life and about 300 years as per the lore, the latest edition, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, starring Freya Allan has kick-started a new saga.

The latest turn of events finds the apes as the dominant species on the planet and humans reduced to a feral state. In the twist of proceedings, as Allan’s character gains center-piece attraction and starts becoming pivotal to the story, easter eggs can be drawn to her all the way back to the start of the franchise.
