When in London, go pantless. Anya Taylor-Joy did exactly that while on the promotional tour for her latest movie project, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, in London.
Serving look after look, Anya Taylor-Joy hit the promo trail parading her long, slim legs, and I’m not complaining. She donned a daring black bodysuit evocative of the Playboy Bunny for the London premiere of Furiosa and an olive-green coat dress that exudes military flair for the photocall.

Few periods on the calendar mean more to cinephiles than the two weekends in May occupied by the Cannes Film Festival. Since its founding in 1946, the French festival has been a launchpad for some of the most artistically significant films of all time. The Palme d’Or is one of the most coveted film awards on the planet, and the festival’s ability to balance subversive arthouse work with major Hollywood premieres has led many to view it as the world’s most significant celebration of cinema.
The 2024 lineup featured a mix of buzzy premieres from New Hollywood titans like Francis Ford Coppola and Paul Schrader alongside exciting new works from emerging directors. Between the Main Competition, Un Certain Regard, special screenings, and sidebars like the Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week, the onslaught of new films can be overwhelming for anyone who isn’t able to give the festival their 24/7 attention.

Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” conquered the international box office again with $40.6 million in its second weekend of release.
So far, the fourth chapter in the “Apes” reboot franchise has generated $136 million overseas and $237 million globally. It currently stands as the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year, behind “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($533 million), “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($561 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($710 million).
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” cost $160 million to produce, so it needs to keep swinging at the box office to justify its price tag. International ticket sales will be key in turning a profit in its theatrical run. Top overseas markets include China with $20.4 million, France with $13.8 million, Mexico with $12 million and the U.K. with $10 million.
In a distant second place, Paramount and director John Krasinski‘s “If,” a fantasy-comedy aimed at young kids, collected $20 million from 58 markets.

There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive it has been Kevin Costner. Okay, well Clint Eastwood too. And that has been true right from the beginning of his career when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985, and he also made an impression as title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Oscar-winning 1990 Best Picture Dances With Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. For the past few seasons he has prominently been involved in a more contemporary take in his hit TV series, Yellowstone. But without question his most ambitious and sprawling swing yet, Horizon: An American Saga, which kicked off...

“If” (Paramount) may have fallen short of its anticipated $40 million opening, but the glass is at least half-full. Preview and initial numbers suggested it could end up around $28 million; instead, its initial estimate is $35 million.
That improvement, along with its A Cinemascore, suggests a film that could stick around. It would be a real boost for the cause of original non-franchise production. Domestic on “If” is better than foreign, which stands at $24 million, $20 million from this weekend. That puts it at $59 million worldwide.
The full weekend is projected to hit $99 million. If that becomes $100 million, it would mark the first time since Easter. By comparison, 2023 saw every weekend from April 7 through mid-August hit that level. In 2019, with significantly lower ticket prices, that was the case from post-Super Bowl through Labor Day.

The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

“If” only made $1.8 million in previews, which were pulled into its opening Friday number of $10.3 million.

Not exactly the opening weekend that dreams are made of.
Director John Krasinski’s “If,” a fantasy-comedy that promises your imaginary friends from childhood are real, fell slightly short of box office expectations with $35 million. Heading into the weekend, “If” was expected to bring in at least $40 million in its first weekend of release. Based on Friday’s turnout, it looked like “If” would open to $30 million but projections were revised up after Saturday’s strong showing. Ticket sales were enough for first place, but it’s a wobbly start for a PG family film that cost $110 million to make and many millions more to market. It collected an additional $20 million overseas for a global total of $55 million.
The good news for Paramount Pictures, which distributed “If,” is that audiences dug the film, giving it an “A” CinemaScore. Ideally, it’ll have staying power like recent original kid-friendly movies, including “Migration” and “Elemental,...

Okay, we know that Cannes is the big thing at the moment and that everyone’s waiting for the premiere of Furiosa next week, but if you don’t know what to do in between, we might just have a very interesting proposal for all of you horror fans out there. The queer psychological horror I Saw the TV Glow was quietly released in theaters last Friday, after having its premiere at Sundance in January and after its limited release on May 3. Distributed by A24, the movie might not become a box office record-breaker, but it seems that the critics love it, and that might motivate people to go see the movie.
The movie is based on an original screenplay by Jane Schoenbrun, who also directed the movie. The non-binary filmmaker is best known for their earlier horror We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, which was also an indie...

2024's box office got off to a rough start, and the big boost that's typically expected in the summer has yet to materialize. John Krasinski's "If," a fantasy film about retired imaginary friends that combines live action and animation, is the latest release to debut to underwhelming numbers. Deadline reports that "If" is on track to gross $30.5 million in its opening weekend, which is at the bottom end of projections.
That's not a disaster for "If" itself, which had a relatively constrained $110 million budget. It's a bigger start than the more-expensive action comedy flick "The Fall Guy" managed a couple of weeks ago. And while "If" may not have impressed critics (its Rotten Tomatoes score is 50% as of this writing), it received an A CinemaScore from opening night exit polls, indicating that general audiences feel more warmly about it. Original movies are always a tough sell at the box office,...

Although the English actor’s career began on television, Tom Burke has worked extensively in movies and TV shows. Over the years, the actor has had increasing credits on the big and small screens. His passion for acting was developed at an early age, having been born into a family where both parents (David Burke and Anna Calder-Marshall) are actors. Burke also has influences from his godparents, Alan Rickman and Bridget Turner. As proof of his growth through the years, Tom Burke is cast in an iconic role in George Miller’s $168 million budget spin-off/prequel movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron took the Mad Max franchise into a new and modern direction when they both starred in George Miller’s 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Portraying the roles of Max and Furiosa respectively, the film was as chaotic as it was brutal and Theron had to be prepared.

Being a toughened warrior, the character of Furiosa was as hard as it was impactful. With Theron portraying the role, the actress had to go beyond the normal and create a bulkier body just so that she could fight properly. Citing co-star Tom Hardy as one of the reasons, Charlize Theron revealed why she exercised so much for Mad Max: Fury Road!

Not only is it a popular market for future and unreleased movies, but it is also the place where many films have their premiere and where the audiences can see them for the first time. After the premieres of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and Megalopolis, another upcoming hit also had its premiere yesterday and it seems that the critics are absolutely amazed with the movie! We have already written about Yorgos Lantihmos’ upcoming film, Kinds of Kindness, and we can confirm that the early reviews point to the Greek director having another major hit for us!
In case you have forgotten, Kinds of Kindness is based on an original script co-written by Efthimis Filippou and Lanthimos himself. Lanthimos described the film as “a contemporary film, set in the US – three different stories, with four...

Eyes follow Anya Taylor-Joy whenever she steps on a red carpet, and the descriptions of her ensembles that follow often include adjectives like glamorous, ethereal, angelic, and the like. But when she faced photographers’ lenses in Sydney in early May for the world premiere of George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, what followed was a series of exclamation points. Edgy! Electric! Striking! Furiosa-approved!
Taylor-Joy donned a vintage look from Paco Rabanne’s spring 1996 haute couture collection. The sheer chain-mail creation featured triangular and oval diamonté adornments with arrow spikes jutting out from both the body of the dress and the matching headpiece.
With her appearance, Taylor-Joy became the latest star to fashionably fuel a trend that has been described as method dressing or character cosplay. It has felt omnipresent as of late, thanks to style stars like Zendaya, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Kristen Stewart and Florence Pugh. Though...

Actor Charlize Theron has often changed her weight to suit the needs of her role. In Mad Max: Fury Road, she opted to put on a lot of muscle to showcase her character’s strength. But her transformation might’ve been more dramatic than she thought it’d be.

Theron had a specific look that she wanted to achieve for Mad Max. Playing a military soldier of sorts, she wanted to look believable in a role that would require her to fight other trained combatants. Anya Taylor-Joy wearing a headpiece never fails to wow me. Headdresses give her a particular charm, and I wouldn’t mind seeing her show up to the Furiosa promotional tour with a variety of headpieces—like the flapper chainmail hat she wore to the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga photocall during the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Nine years ago, director George Miller came kind of out of nowhere to deliver one of the greatest action movies of all time with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Miller revived the long-dead franchise with a film so universally beloved the only shocking thing is that it took nine years to get another "Mad Max" movie made. Well, here we are, staring down the barrel of the release of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," which tells the origin story of Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron in "Fury Road"). The question is, can this prequel build on the audience that has come to adore "Fury Road" in the years since its release? Warner Bros. will need that to be the case for the film to be an outright hit at the box office.
"Furisa" hits theaters next weekend and will be opening directly against "The Garfield Movie." Admittedly, these films are both playing for radically different audiences.

The summer movie season could use some help, and Chris Pratt might just be here to save the day. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" actor returns to the silver screen next weekend in "The Garfield Movie," an animated take on Jim Davis' orange, Monday-hating cat. For Sony Pictures, there is one big question; can some of that Pratt magic that made "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion worldwide) such a major hit last year rub off on this one? Even a fraction of that magic would be most welcome here.
"The Garfield Movie" is opening directly against George Miller's "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." While the animated, family-friendly film would typically have the edge, it looks like "Furiosa" is going to win the weekend in the early going, with an opening between $46.5 and $59 million. But that doesn't mean this cat is out of luck, as Sony...

It really does seem like legendary Australian filmmaker George Miller cannot miss his major projects. It really does. The visionary is the one who provided us with the Mad Max franchise, a cult classic series that initially starred Mel Gibson in the titular role before he was replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road. The latter is also known for introducing Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron, a character so popular that Miller decided to make a prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which premieres globally next week but has had its Cannes premiere only recently. Anya Taylor-Joy leads the movie, and based on the reaction at Cannes, Miller will have another major hit!
Furiosa is set to be released in theaters on May 23, 2024, which is next week, but the Cannes premiere came this week in Cannes, where it was screened as an out-of-competition feature, and the reactions were great!

Basically everyone knows that George Miller is one of Australia’s best directors and one of the best filmmakers of all time, in general. The visionary is the one who provided us with the Mad Max franchise, a cult classic series that starred Mel Gibson in the titular role; he was later replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road, a movie that also introduced the character of Furiosa, initially played by Charlize Theron. On the second night of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Judith Godrèche told the mostly female crowd assembled on a beach next to the Palais, “This film is for you!” The French actor-director was presenting her short “Moi Aussi,” a last-minute addition to the festival lineup that covers sexual misconduct in the French film industry. Godrèche has become something of an ambassador to the fledgling movement after she came forward in February with claims that she was preyed upon and groomed as a minor by directors Benoît Jacquot and Jacques Doillon, allegations they both deny. The beach screening kicked off what many hope will be a sweeping French #MeToo reckoning.
But the festival and its accompanying film market also will feature several men who have been the subject of #MeToo allegations that range from sexual harassment, sexual assault and domestic violence. The awkward presence of such actors as Shia Labeouf and James Franco,...

Yes, there were more flame-throwers, but working on Furiosa was pretty similar to starring in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, says the actor. So how does he duck the crossfire that comes with playing Jk Rowling’s Strike?

Almost nine years to the day since Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in Cannes, George Miller returns to the Croisette with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It’s a deafening roar of a film, full of the same improbable vehicles and breathless pursuits through the director’s signature dystopian outback, though now told through a lens that can feel a bit slick at times. It tells the story of how Imperator Furiosa (immortalized by Charlize Theron in 2015 and gamely reinterpreted here by Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy) came to be, tracking her journey from childhood and the Place of Abundance––an Edenic oasis of renewable energy and worrying red apples––to hardened warrior in the wastelands of Bullet Farm, Gastown, and The Citadel of Immortan Joe. The concerns that met the trailer––suggesting Miller had traded in his predecessor’s practical effects for CGI––are, I’m sorry to say,...

The spicy chicken wing interview series “Hot Ones,” hosted by Sean Evans, has successfully petitioned to be included in the outstanding talk series category. It will compete against late-night hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert.
Created by Chris Schonberger and produced by First We Feast, “Hot Ones” has garnered over three billion views since its debut in 2015. When walking into a film like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the problem with prequel stories cannot help but linger in the back of one’s mind: Can there be excitement in telling us a story we already know? Indiana Jones can’t die in Temple of Doom and Anakin Skywalker will grow up to become Darth Vader. It’s inevitable. Some prequels manage to navigate that hurdle by completely subverting our expectations (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), largely functioning as standalone experiences (X-Men: First Class), or by simply parodying their very concepts (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp). No matter the solution, what we know remains a constant issue that needs to be accounted for.
In recent years, more prequel stories have strangely embraced that issue. Many modern movie prequels get made because we know almost everything about those stories, those characters, and that world. That...

The first reviews are in for George Miller’s anticipated Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and the notices are largely positive so far.
Deadline’s Pete Hammond said Miller had “perhaps given birth to the greatest Max yet, a wheels-up, rock-and-rolling epic.” Pete was one of many to praise the cast, production design and visuals. “Shout-out to action designer Guy Norris and his team, who show the need for a stunts Oscar.” You can check out his review here.
The movie currently has an 87% rating from 45 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Below are a spread we’ve collated from across the globe.
Reviewing for The Guardian, Peter Bradshaw gave the movie four stars, and he was one of many to heap praise on leads Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth. He called Taylor-Joy an “overwhelmingly convincing action hero” who “sells this sequel.”

George Miller gets biblical in the opening moments of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in his postapocalyptic action franchise. The young Furiosa, played by Alyla Browne, picks a ripe piece of fruit from a tree growing at the edge of a verdant forest. “We’ve come too far,” says her companion, emphasizing the forbidden nature of the act with the perfect amount of allegorical on-the-noseness. What happens next certainly has the aura of divine punishment, as Furiosa is whisked away from her home (“the Green Place” first mentioned in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road) by a masked group of motor bikers.
She’s no helpless waif, mind you, and with her steadfast mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser), in hot pursuit, Furiosa gives as good as any of the lecherous brutes tormenting her. But the fates, not to mention the narrative dictates of an origin story with an already fixed outcome,...
