George Miller's Fury Road prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, revs into theaters this weekend, and while the movie is quite a bit more brutal than our previous trip to the Wasteland, it seems there was one scene that proved a little too gruesome for the legendary filmmaker.
Spoilers relating to the ending of the film follow.
During an interview with GQ, star Anya Taylor-Joy revealed that she convinced Miller to shoot a scene in which her character cuts out the tongue of her nemesis, the cruel warlord Demenetus (Chris Hemsworth), who was responsible for the death of her mother - and plenty more besides.
However, the gory moment didn't make the theatrical cut of the film.
“It was really important to me that the confrontation between Furiosa and Dementus be a physical one, and that it was hard-won,” said the actress. “It needed it; she needed it. I...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga roared through Cannes before it launches in theaters Friday after nearly 10 years in development. The prequel film builds on the Australian wasteland universe established in George Miller’s four other movies of the franchise: Mad Max (1979), Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
In Fury Road, which became the first in the franchise to receive Academy Award nominations (winning six out of ten awards), Charlize Theron portrayed Imperator Furiosa. Anya Taylor-Joy takes on the titular role in this next installment, which shows her backstory of getting kidnapped by Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Hord. At 10 years old, she is forced to grow up fast, and while she fights for survival, her only wish is to return home and reunite with her family.

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Its production design and sound are equally impressive. But the academy branch that’s most likely to be impressed will be the...

What is the best Australian movie ever made? Walkabout? Wake in Fright? The Piano? Picnic at Hanging Rock? The Babadook? All worthy contenders, no doubt, but they’re all wrong answers. The only acceptable response regarding the best movie from the Land Down Under is Mad Max, George Miller’s marauding motorist mania that celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2024. Never mind the billion-dollar franchise it spawned, the creative ingenuity and low-budget DIY filmmaking of the original remains one of the most impressive cinematic feats on record.
A true independent movie with a rebellious spirit, Mad Max was made in just 12 weeks for a paltry $350,000 yet went on to gross $185 million worldwide. The film introduced the world to Mel Gibson, who would go on to play the badass road-racing Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky twice more en route to becoming a bona fide Hollywood action star. The brain of filmmaker George Miller is a glorious thing. The creator of the Mad Max movies has conjured some of the craziest images ever committed to film – and now, at 79 years of age, he’s about to do it all over again in fifth outing Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Ever since the 1979 original Mad Max – and its sequels Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, and most recently Mad Max: Fury Road – Miller has been pulling weird and wonderful creations from his imagination and bringing them to the screen with uncompromising vision.
As a result, the Mad Max saga is packed with oddballs, grotesqueries, twisted heroes, and despicable villains. Now’s the perfect time to revisit every film in the series – and meet the wildest inhabitants of the Wasteland.

For decades, Memorial Day weekend has traditionally been a hugely busy weekend at the box office, often offering the biggest of franchise sequels — or in this case, two potential franchise prequels? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The Memorial Day bump that has helped so many franchise installments before will certainly be in play for George Miller‘s return to the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max with “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a prequel that tells the earlier story of Charlize Theron‘s character from “Mad Max: Fury Road.” This one stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character, joined by Chris Hemsworth as a new antagonist called Dementus, as well a mix of new characters and ones that appeared in “Fury Road.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is upon us. The spin-off is getting mostly positive reactions, with a bevy of its criticisms coming from the film’s length and pacing. However, the consensus is that 79-year-old George Miller brings back the action and excitement that made Mad Max: Fury Road such a standout spectacle in the sea of frenetic action blockbusters. While praise belongs to Miller and the film’s star, Anya Taylor-Joy, the man of the hour is Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, the villain of the movie.
Hemsworth has recently stated that he would get in his own way by improvising too much on Thor: Love and Thunder. However, a new profile in MovieMaker reveals that Hemsworth found it easier to disappear into his character for Furiosa thanks to his unique look — namely the prosthetic nose. He explained, “The nose, the beard, the kind of wig, all the sort of prosthetics and the costume,...

Imagine a kindly grandfather-type figure sitting by an open hotel window, staring out at the sea on the French Riviera. The early sun hits his shock of gray hair in a way that almost makes it look like there’s a halo above it. The black-on-black ensemble suggests he’s arrived in France for an undertaker’s convention. Mad Max is a staple name that comes to mind whenever action movies are discussed, and reasonably so. As director George Miller’s epic dystopian movie series has inspired numerous creators, it has revitalized the landscape of the action genre. In the course of four movies, the series has also introduced some of the most iconic characters in pop fiction, namely the titular protagonist, the cop turned vagabond drifter, Max Rockatansky, and the more intriguing, fierce warrior-survivor protagonist of Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa. Portrayed by an impeccable Charlize Theron, who delivered an unforgettable performance as the rugged survivor, Furiosa was quickly recognized as the definitive female action hero of the last decade.
Even keeping aside the extremely strong response from the audience, there was more than enough of a backstory hinted at for Furiosa as a character in Fury Road and enough curiosity regarding her origin to warrant a solo movie of her own.

With Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga hitting theaters soon, I figured now would be a good time to look back at the character’s origins in Mad Max: Fury Road. Like every other entry in the Mad Max franchise surprisingly enough, both Furiosa and Fury Road were released a substantially long time after the previous film and went through several major changes throughout development.
In the case of Fury Road specifically, it was initially conceived by director George Miller in 1987 before finally entering pre-production in 1998 with original series star Mel Gibson attached, only for the production to quickly spiral out of control in the wake of 9/11, the Iraq War, various location shoot issues, George Miller’s other priorities, and controversies surrounding Mel Gibson that made bringing him back a very bad idea.

After nearly a decade, director George Miller has returned to the Wasteland with "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga." The film serves as a prequel to 2015's Oscar-winning, dangerous epic "Mad Max: Fury Road," which has garnered a reputation as one of the greatest action films ever made. Miller enlisted Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Queen's Gambit") and Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") to tell the tale of Furiosa years before we met her in "Fury Road." With the film hitting theaters this week, critics have weighed in, and while many are praising Miller's latest, others have vocally disliked it. So, what are critics saying about the long-awaited film?
The latest entry in the "Mad Max" franchise centers on a young Furiosa (Anya-Taylor Joy) who is snatched from the Green Place and winds up in the hands of the warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). As he goes to war with the Immortan Joe for control of the Wasteland,...

There will be moviegoers at the Memorial Day weekend box office; the industry can be thankful for that. Just not as many as the previous two years when the entire 4-day frame exceeded $200M+.

So this is what economizing looks like in Cannes.
The rosé still flowed, though not as freely, and it was easier to get a reservation at the Michelin-starred restaurants that are usually booked months in advance of the film festival. There were still rooms to be had at the Hôtel du Cap, the posh resort where studio chiefs and movie stars typically stay. Most troubling, the deals — both for completed films that premiered in Cannes and the packages that hit the Côte d’Azur searching for financing — are taking much longer to close.
Even in the shimmering south of France there’s no escaping that the movie business, having endured Covid shutdowns and two devastating labor strikes, has lost much of its luster. Riley Keough Claims Fraud, Forged Lisa Marie Presley Signature in Graceland Foreclosure Sale Attempt
Actress Riley Keough is taking the fight to save Graceland — the iconic Memphis home of her grandfather Elvis Presley — to court this week after what she claims is a fraudulent attempt to use her late mother’s forged signature to pass the property over to settle a multi-million dollar debt.
Keough, the trustee of the Promenade Trust, filed a lawsuit on May 15 in Shelby County Chancery Court and is now seeking to block an entity named Naussany Investments & Private Lending LLC from taking profits from the sale of Graceland, a longtime Memphis tourism destination and place of pilgrimage for Presley and his fans worldwide. In the complaint, Keough’s attorney suggests that the entity attempting to have Graceland sold off forged Lisa Marie Presley’s signature on the document that allowed the famed property to be held as collateral for a $3.8 million loan.

From the man who brought you Happy Feet and Babe: Pig in the City comes the action-packed epic event of the summer. Visionary filmmaker George Miller returns to the post-apocalyptic wasteland that he created with the fifth entry into his highly acclaimed franchise: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It’s been nine years since Mad Max: Fury Road and the esteemed filmmaker is now in his seventies, which had a lot of fans questioning whether he still had the ability to replicate the breath-taking extravaganza from nearly a decade ago. The simple answer is… hell yeah.

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

Of all the contenders to play James Bond next, many would argue that Tom Hardy is effortlessly one of the best choices ever. His wit, charming demeanor, and overall personality make him stand out among everyone else and seem like the perfect choice to embody the peerless spy. Plus, he’s British, so that checks out another box of requirements for the character.

However, even after all these similarities, one thing still stands in the way between everyone deeming him to be the perfect choice for this role. This one thing is his 12-year-old $156 million box office disaster with Chris Pine, This Means War, which featured him as a CIA agent but failed to garner many appraisals for Hardy in the role because of his lackluster performance.

Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron took the Mad Max franchise into a new and modern direction when they both starred in George Miller’s 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road. Portraying the roles of Max and Furiosa respectively, the film was as chaotic as it was brutal and Theron had to be prepared.

Actor Charlize Theron has often changed her weight to suit the needs of her role. In Mad Max: Fury Road, she opted to put on a lot of muscle to showcase her character’s strength. But her transformation might’ve been more dramatic than she thought it’d be.

Theron had a specific look that she wanted to achieve for Mad Max. Playing a military soldier of sorts, she wanted to look believable in a role that would require her to fight other trained combatants. “Do you have it in you to make it epic?” That’s the question Chris Hemsworth’s Dementus asks in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and one person who undoubtedly does is director George Miller. Nine years ago, director George Miller came kind of out of nowhere to deliver one of the greatest action movies of all time with "Mad Max: Fury Road." Miller revived the long-dead franchise with a film so universally beloved the only shocking thing is that it took nine years to get another "Mad Max" movie made. Well, here we are, staring down the barrel of the release of "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," which tells the origin story of Furiosa (played by Charlize Theron in "Fury Road"). The question is, can this prequel build on the audience that has come to adore "Fury Road" in the years since its release? Warner Bros. will need that to be the case for the film to be an outright hit at the box office.
"Furisa" hits theaters next weekend and will be opening directly against "The Garfield Movie." Admittedly, these films are both playing for radically different audiences.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness,” starring Emma Stone, freaked out Cannes Film Festival on Friday night with an anthology of stories about sex cults, cannibalism and general debauchery.
Lanthimos’ follow-up to “Poor Things” earned a 4.5-minute standing ovation, with the director and his cast — including Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Joe Alwyn — leaving while the applause was still going. “Kinds of Kindness” tells three distinctive stories with cast members playing different roles in each. There were a few walkouts during the Cannes premiere, most of them coming after the film’s gorier, second chapter. Lanthimos abruptly left the screening and didn’t speak to audience members once the clapping stopped.
The film, like many of Lanthimos’ avant-garde offerings, overflows with outré plot twists as well as some outrageous moments — like Chau licking sweat off her followers as part of a cult ritual, a man who becomes...

Taking on the role of a younger Furiosa was no small feat for Anya Taylor-Joy. The decision to avoid contacting Charlize Theron, who originally brought the character to life in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, was intentional. In her words, Taylor-Joy shared, Why didn’t I call Charlize? I went to the source, which is George , and was like, ‘What do you need me to be?’ The film, Furiosa, is a visually stunning and action-packed prequel set many years before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by George Miller, this latest iteration dives deep into the backstory of

Yes, there were more flame-throwers, but working on Furiosa was pretty similar to starring in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, says the actor. So how does he duck the crossfire that comes with playing Jk Rowling’s Strike?

Almost nine years to the day since Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in Cannes, George Miller returns to the Croisette with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. It’s a deafening roar of a film, full of the same improbable vehicles and breathless pursuits through the director’s signature dystopian outback, though now told through a lens that can feel a bit slick at times. It tells the story of how Imperator Furiosa (immortalized by Charlize Theron in 2015 and gamely reinterpreted here by Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy) came to be, tracking her journey from childhood and the Place of Abundance––an Edenic oasis of renewable energy and worrying red apples––to hardened warrior in the wastelands of Bullet Farm, Gastown, and The Citadel of Immortan Joe. The concerns that met the trailer––suggesting Miller had traded in his predecessor’s practical effects for CGI––are, I’m sorry to say,...

2024 has been a great year for movies so far, and it only seems to be getting better. From A24 making history with the Civil War to Wes Ball succeeding in crafting a worthy continuation to the Planet of the Apes trilogy, now it seems, George Miller is too joining in on the fun.
Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.

A fascinating blend of film mastery and personal devotion emerged recently when famed game designer Hideo Kojima shared his thoughts on George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Kojima, revered for his groundbreaking work in the video game industry, did not hold back his admiration, declaring, George Miller’s Mad Max movies, especially the first two, were the first time when I saw action scenes in cinema. This profound respect for Miller’s craft comes ahead of Furiosa, a much-anticipated prequel to the wildly successful Mad Max: Fury Road. When walking into a film like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the problem with prequel stories cannot help but linger in the back of one’s mind: Can there be excitement in telling us a story we already know? Indiana Jones can’t die in Temple of Doom and Anakin Skywalker will grow up to become Darth Vader. It’s inevitable. Some prequels manage to navigate that hurdle by completely subverting our expectations (Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me), largely functioning as standalone experiences (X-Men: First Class), or by simply parodying their very concepts (Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp). No matter the solution, what we know remains a constant issue that needs to be accounted for.
In recent years, more prequel stories have strangely embraced that issue. Many modern movie prequels get made because we know almost everything about those stories, those characters, and that world. That...

George Miller gets biblical in the opening moments of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the fifth installment in his postapocalyptic action franchise. The young Furiosa, played by Alyla Browne, picks a ripe piece of fruit from a tree growing at the edge of a verdant forest. “We’ve come too far,” says her companion, emphasizing the forbidden nature of the act with the perfect amount of allegorical on-the-noseness. What happens next certainly has the aura of divine punishment, as Furiosa is whisked away from her home (“the Green Place” first mentioned in Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road) by a masked group of motor bikers.
She’s no helpless waif, mind you, and with her steadfast mother, Mary Jo Bassa (Charlee Fraser), in hot pursuit, Furiosa gives as good as any of the lecherous brutes tormenting her. But the fates, not to mention the narrative dictates of an origin story with an already fixed outcome,...
