Director Francesca Archibugi, whose feminist fascist-era saga “La Storia” was Italy’s biggest TV event of 2023, is set to return behind camera on World War II drama “The Italian Chapel” set in Scotland’s Orkney Islands.
Inspired by a true story, “Italian Chapel” is centered on a clash between the local Orkney community and prisoners of war who are confined there. Against this backdrop, a secret romance springs up between an Italian prisoner and a Scottish islander.
The film, which was originally developed by Working Title Films and the British Film Institute (BFI), is being co-produced by Andrew Bendel’s U.K. production company Blue Horizon Productions (“Metroland”) in tandem with Marco Belardi’s Rome-based Greenboo Production. Greenboo is the Banijay-owned company behind hits such as “Perfect Stangers,” Gabriele Muccino’s “There Is No Place Like Home,” and Paolo Virzì’s “Like Crazy,” starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, which launched from Director’s Fortnight in 2016.

What better gift for the holiday season than a new release from Jimin of BTS? Despite all seven members now enlisted in the South Korean military, Army isn’t lacking new music and content to enjoy: on the heels of the premiere of a new docuseries on Disney+, Jimin has shared a solo song titled “Closer Than This.” Stream it below.
More in the vein of sweet tracks like “Friends” or “Promise” than the high stakes drama of his 2023 solo album, “Closer Than This” is a love letter to the fans and promise of a reunion. “Letting go of your hand for a moment/ But it’s only a small comma in our story/ Just call my name out loud until the days tinge purple once again,” he sings in Korean. His distinct vocal range is on full display here over light, playful guitar and an earworm of a hook.

Jimin isn’t saying goodbye to BTS Army as he prepares to begin his service as an active-duty soldier in the South Korean military. Instead, he’s sending them a heartfelt love letter as more of an “I’ll see you later” in the form of his latest solo single “Closer Than This.”
“Whenever it rains, I’ll remember the times I sang in the rain/Whenever it snows, I’ll cherish how you smiled for me in the snow/On the spring day we meet again, I’ll tell...

It’s that time of year again, folks. The 2024 Grammy nominations have been announced, and for fellow K-pop fans, it’s another season of “disappointed, but not surprised.” This year’s nominations failed to nod to any artists out of Seoul, despite the diversity of genre, sound, and style displayed in the submissions.
Historically, BTS paved the way and set the precedent as the first and only K-pop act to secure a nomination, beginning at the 2021 ceremony with a nomination for “Dynamite.” The following year, “Butter” earned a nod in the same category (Best Pop Duo/Group Performance), alongside their collaboration with Coldplay, “My Universe,” and a Best Music Video nomination for “Yet to Come.”
This year, perhaps encouraged by the fact that BTS were able to start making waves in the Grammys world, many K-pop acts followed suit in submissions: aespa, Seventeen, Stray Kids, Tomorrow X Together, Twice, Nct,...

Jimin's solo era kicked off in full force in March with his debut album, "Face." The album produced two hit singles - "Set Me Free Pt. 2" and "Like Crazy," which hit No. 30 and No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 respectively - and a slate of music performances that were instantly unforgettable to fans.
Jimin kept much of his solo production process and plans close to his chest leading up to Feb. 21, when he first announced his official plans for "Face" in a Weverse statement, but he did give insight into what it was like recording an album on his own for the first time in a January 2022 interview with W Korea.
"So many things are different," he said. "Since I am working alone, it makes me think a lot, which makes outcomes slower. When I work with the members, we talk about lots of things and clear them quickly. I...

Penélope Cruz is set to star as Olga, a writer forced to give up her artistic ambitions when her husband suddenly leaves her and their two young daughters, in Isabel Coixet’s English-language adaptation of Italian author Elena Ferrante’s “The Days of Abandonment.”
The deal to make the film, which is now in development, was signed before the SAG-AFTRA strike. While Cruz did not attend the Venice Film Festival, she elicited raves from critics on the Lido for her performance in Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” as the angry, lonely, grief-ravaged Laura Ferrari, emotionally estranged from her husband Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver).
“The Days of Abandonment,” which will transpose the novel’s original Italian setting to America, reunites the two top Spanish talents following their collaboration on another U.S.-set film, the 2008 drama “Elegy” an adaptation of Philip Roth’s novella “The Dying Animal,” about an affair between a...

Italian production designer Tonino Zera will receive the Campari Passion for Film Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Zera — whose works include production design for Giuseppe Tornatore’s The Unknown Woman (2006), Paolo Virzì’s Like Crazy (2016) and Michele Placido’s Caravaggio’s Shadow (2022) — most recently created the sets for Roman Polanski’s The Place, which will have its world premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival next month. The dramedy, set in a luxurious Swiss hotel on a fateful New Year’s Eve in 1999, stars Oliver Masucci, Fanny Ardant, John Cleese, Luca Barbareschi and Mickey Rourke. It will screen out of competition in Venice.
Zera will receive his award Sept. 2 ahead of The Palace premiere.

The devoted culture warriors dedicated to taking Jason Aldean’s “Try That in a Small Town” to the top of the charts appear to have already grown bored of the song as it plummeted from Number One to Number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week.
Last week, the song topped the Hot 100, several months after its initial release in April, and following the arrival of a controversial music video that critics — from the country music world to academia — said promoted white nationalism and painted protests against racial injustice as lawless and violent.

Seoul, July 25 (Ians) K-pop superband BTS member Jungkook’s new single ‘Seven’ featuring Latto (formerly known as Mulatto) has debuted at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart.
It marks the 25-year-old’s first time to rule the chart as a soloist.

On Tuesday, Billboard published a piece speculating on why hip-hop hasn’t had a Number One album or single within the first half of 2023. The report set off a flurry of chatter from industry observers and rap fans drawing their own conclusions as to what the answer might be. Is the dearth of rap hits this year a matter of market share, artist deaths, incarceration, or stagnant charts?
Most people who think the occurrence is no big deal are chalking it up to a lack of releases by major rap stars.

Jimin's secret song off his debut solo album, "Face," isn't so secret anymore. In celebration of BTS's 10th anniversary Festa, Jimin filmed a live performance of his track "Letter," which only appeared on the physical edition of his hit album. While you can still only listen to the fully-produced version of the song on Jimin's physical album (so you're out of luck if you decided to pass on purchasing it), the acoustic, live performance released on June 7 is beyond beautiful, and a gift to ARMYs.
Back in March, when "Letter" was initially released, fans were surprised when they recognized Jimin's BTS bandmate Jungkook's unmistakable vocals on the track, adding trills and adlibs throughout the final minute of the song. Although Jungkook did not participate in the live performance of "Letter" for Festa, his backing vocals can be heard (albeit more softly) in the background at the end of the video.

(I think we could last forever
I’m afraid that everything will disappear
Just trust me)
She’s saying
Baby, come and follow me
There’s not a bad thing here tonight
Save your reasons all for later
Stay with me a little while
Watch me go
Now, I sink down, all alone away
Where am I?
A dark haze clouding up my eyes
I can hear the voices listening
Don’t know who they are
Trying to take the pressure off
Been reaching for the stars
Tell me, will I find myself again?
When I go too far?
Yeah, I know
You know, I know (Ooh)
I’d rather be
Lost in the lights, lost in the lights
I’m outta my mind
Can you help me numb the pain?

There's no end to how much musical history BTS has made as a group. They're the first and only Korean artists to notch six No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and they're the only Korean artists to have been nominated for five Grammys, to name just a few of their major accomplishments. Now, as the group takes a temporary hiatus to serve in the Korean military and focus on their solo projects, it seems they'll start hitting even more milestones as soloists. Case in point: Jimin released his first solo album, "Face," along with the album's lead single, "Like Crazy," on March 24, and a little over week later, he's now a Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping soloist.
On April 3, Billboard reported that "Like Crazy" debuted at the top of the Billboard Hot 100, making Jimin the first and only Korean soloist to score a No. 1 hit on the chart.

The solo debut from BTS’ Jimin starts off with something unexpected—horns that sound like they’re coming from an energy-depleted carnival band, bleating out a few jaunty notes before completely falling into a heap. It’s not a harbinger of how the six songs that follow will go, but it does indicate that Jimin is willing to have fun with the image he’s cultivated over the decade-plus that he’s been in the global spotlight. And while Face does at times dwell on the existential what-ifs that plague...

Jimin can’t escape solitude in the music video for his latest single “Like Crazy,” which appears on his newly released debut solo album Face. Inspired by the 2011 romance drama of the same name, the video centers the BTS member in contrasting environments – dancing at a crowded party or sitting alone at his dining table – to communicate the uncertainty of ambiguous relationships.
“I tried to express the feelings of that movie,” Jimin told Rolling Stone in a recent interview. “You know, the somewhat complex, somewhat lonely, somewhat happy emotions. I...

Before Jimin was sure he could release a solo debut album, his fellow BTS members believed in him first.
It was last spring, and the group was in Las Vegas, carrying out the last shows on their “Permission to Dance on Stage” stadium tour. In between nights, he opened up to his brother-like band members over drinks and told them about the self-doubt he’d been experiencing during the pandemic. New Disney+ original series “The Good Mothers,” which provides a fresh female take on the Calabrian mob, marks a case of truly organic collaboration between the U.K. and Italy to ensure that a great story didn’t risk losing an iota of authenticity.
The show, which is competing in the “Berlinale Series” section, depicts the Calabrian mob through the prism of three daring women inside the ‘Ndrangheta organized crime clan who collaborated with a female prosecutor and withstood the consequences of their attempt to escape its iron grip. It is produced produced by Juliette Howell, Tessa Ross and Harriet Spencer for London’s House Productions, which originated the project, and by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Gangarossa for Rome’s Wildside, a Fremantle company, which helped to firmly root the story in its Calabrian context.

Italian director Paolo Virzì (“Human Capital,” “Like Crazy”) is in Venice where his dystopic drama “Siccità,” which means drought in Italian, is premiering out-of-competition. The innovative pic, which features an A-list ensemble cast comprising Monica Bellucci, Sara Serraiocco (“Counterpart”) and Silvio Orlando (“The Young Pope”), is set amid a protracted drought caused by climate change in the Italian capital where the Tiber has dried up.
Virzì spoke to Variety about how “Siccità” germinated during Covid-19 and was shot amid tight pandemic protocols. Excerpts.
You worked with novelist and screenwriter Paolo Giordano on the concept and the script for this film. How did the collaboration start?
I knew Paolo, but it’s not like we had ever worked together. I knew him a bit as a writer and during the pandemic I read his articles in Corriere della Sera about what was happening at a time when there were lots of different fears going around.

Surrounded by a rag-tag community that rallies to help them, and one man who just may become the love of Mathews’ life, their story descends into the mysteries of mental illness but rises with resilient love.
Atria/Simon & Schuster published Mathews’ memoir in 2020. Yorkey will produce the film adaptation alongside his EVP of Development Jeff Sommerville for their That Kid Ed Productions, as part of the company’s growing feature development slate.

Exclusive: Even before the pandemic, the foreign sales market became mired down with some risky bets, i.e. the over exorbitant Roland Emmerich sci-fi disaster title Moonfall which carried a 140M production cost (resulting in a 44.3M WW gross), and Simon Kinberg’s femme spy ensemble The 355 at a 75M cost (which grossed just under 28M WW).
But there’s arguably a safer way to make moolah in the foreign sales sphere and that’s off of YA feature adaptations.
True, it’s been a while since the grand slam days of Lionsgate’s Hunger Games series and Summit International’s Twilight franchise, however, these movies can be made off a low cost yielding singles, doubles, or even home runs at the box office. Leone Film Group’s Lotus Production shingle is setting up Lotus Factory, a new unit for high-profile genre projects out of Italy made for the international market.
These currently include a live action TV series in development on the origins of Santa Clause, for which Lotus chief Marco Belardi has recruited top U.S. talent: Oscar-nominated writer Jim Capobianco (“Ratatouille”) and Robert Lence.
“We are planning to make films of different genres from those that are usually produced in Italy,” Belardi told Variety, noting that Italy’s scripted content output is largely made up of “dramas, comedies and an occasional noir.”
For example, Italian film and TV content targeting family audiences is quite scarce, a gap Belardi is looking to fill with Lotus Factory.
Belardi has recruited young Italian director Nicola Abbatangelo, who recently completed “The Land of Dreams,” an English-language movie musical set in 1920s New York, to serve...

Looking for the UK Amazon Prime new releases? Click here instead!
It’s been awhile since the world has seen a new comedy from Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office (U.S.) and Parks and Recreation. That all changes this month with Amazon Prime’s new releases for May 2020. That’s right, leading the pack of Amazon originals on May 1 is Daniels’ Upload, a comedy about digital afterlives. That should inject a healthy dose of sci-fi “middletopia” into our lives.
Also premiering in May is the second season of Amazon Prime’s twisty drama Homecoming. This season starts Janelle Monáe and premieres on May 22. After that, the rest of Amazon’s originals this month are fairly film-centric. The Goldfinch, Seberg, and The Vast of Night are the notable original films arriving in May.
Per usual the first of the month sees the biggest injection of movie content. Though there is...
