“The Farewell” filmmaker Lulu Wang has reportedly added another major product to her growing slate. Observer reports that Wang has been tapped to direct an English-language remake of the beloved Hirokazu Kore-eda film “Like Father, Like Son” for Focus Features. A source close to Focus confirms the news, and that it is currently in early development stages at the studio. Playwright Sarah Ruhl has been attached to write the screenplay and Wang will produce alongside Josh McLaughlin under his Wink Productions banner.
Kore-eda’s 2013 feature debuted at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won both the Jury Prize and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury – Special Mention. Chicago – One of the hottest films from the first half 2019 festival season was an emotional story about family, and scored the Best Picture at the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards on February 8th. “The Farewell” is a breakout for both the lead actor Awkwafina (“Crazy Rich Asians”), Zhao Shuzhen (who won the Indie Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress) and their director Lulu Wang. Wang’s story of her grandmother became a universal spirit about our relative connections.
Awkwafina portrays Billi, a fictional realization of Lulu Wang’s screenplay, a Chinese American who grew up in Western culture and lives in New York City. But she does have one connection back in China, her beloved grandmother Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen). When her parents find out that Nai Nai has terminal cancer, the whole clan throws a fake wedding for her cousins to get together and visit her, and Billi goes along for the ride.

Humanistic, life-affirming stories don’t sound like a Hollywood business plan, but for the last 15 years it’s worked for financier Big Beach. “The Farewell” writer and director Lulu Wang is teaming up with Nicole Kidman for the drama series “The Expatriates” at Amazon.
The show had received a straight-to-series order at the streamer back in July. Wang is joining the series as a writer and executive producer and will also direct multiple episodes. Wang and Kidman had teased the former’s involvement with the series in a Twitter post on Wednesday.
“The Expatriates” is based on the novel of the same name by Janice Y.K. Lee. It explores the lives of a close-knit expatriate community in Hong Kong. Along with Wang, Kidman and Per Saari of Blossom Films will executive produce. Amazon Studios will produce.

Frontrunners are already forming in the Oscar race for Best Original Screenplay, according to early combined predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, many were recently seen by film industry insiders at the Toronto, Telluride and/ or Venice Film Festivals. We’ve confirmed most category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later. The whole bottom three of this list from last month — “Us,” “Queen and Slim” and “The Lighthouse” — have been replaced by a trio of film fest faves.
Here are the current top 10 original screenplay picks according to racetrack odds based upon our users’ predictions as of Sept. 17:
1. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”: Quentin Tarantino‘s ode to hippie-era Tinseltown has many of his big-screen trademarks, from bare female feet and rambling speeches to spot-on vintage music cues and over-the-top violence.

Frontrunners are already forming for the original screenplay race, according to early combined predictions at Gold Derby. While most films in contention have not yet been released, enough teaser trailers are out there, ranging from “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “The Irishman” to “Little Women” and “Ford v Ferrari” to provide some sense of what at least feels like a worthy contender. We’ve confirmed category placements with studios or campaigners, but — as awards season veterans know — such labels can change later. And once the fall film fests commence, the standings will likely rapidly shift.
Here are the current top 10 adapted screenplay picks on the Gold Derby site, in order, as of Aug. 20:

One of “The Farewell’s” most emotionally poignant scenes revolves around food. Billi (played by Awkwafina) and members of her extended family take turns plucking off morsels from shared family-style platters while debating the merits of growing up in the United States versus China.
Billi’s father (Tzi Ma) recalls one story from Billi’s childhood in the U.S.: after the family immigrated there, a stranger gave them the key to a church so she could practice on its piano, as they did not yet have one of their own.
“That,” Billi’s father says in Mandarin, “is America.”
It’s one of the many anecdotes drawn from writer/director Lulu Wang’s own life, as is the entire premise of the movie. Just as it happens in the film, Wang’s family didn’t tell her aging grandmother that she had stage-iv lung cancer and, instead, staged...

Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” is the most exciting hit movie of the summer, but its success wasn’t preordained. A24 acquired the movie out of Sundance, following raves for the complex look at an Asian American experience through the lens of a woman grappling with dueling cultural identities. When it opened in limited release July 12, it beat out “Avengers: Endgame” for the year’s biggest per-theater average. And it almost didn’t happen. For Wang, the fragmented experience facing her movie’s central character mirrored the filmmaker’s multi-year experience attempting to make “The Farewell,” and it only came together once she had all but given up on it.
There were many disheartening encounters with American financiers as she pitched the premise: a young woman’s family visits her ailing Chinese grandmother while keeping the matriarch in the dark about her illness. Many suggested that Wang introduce a prominent white character into the narrative,...

Lulu Wang was in Berlin in 2013, editing her first film, when she got the call: Her grandmother in China, who’d briefly taken her in when her parents fled the country in 1989, was terminally ill. The family, however, told “Nai Nai” that she was just fine, that the doctor had given her a clean bill of health. Then Wang’s relatives fast-tracked a cousin’s planned wedding as an excuse for everyone to visit the elderly matriarch one last time. The only caveat: Nobody could tell Nai Nai the truth.

Writer-director Lulu Wang draws on her own life to create the story of a Chinese family who come together to celebrate a wedding that’s closer to a funeral. Awkwafina, the rapper-comic and laugh-delivering dynamo of Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, dials down to give a sublime and finely textured performance as Billi, a New Yorker who returns home to China to see her grandmother Nai Nai (the hilarious, heartbreaking and altogether wonderful Shuzhen Zhao). The elderly woman has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. The catch is that...

Family is everything. We must never forget them. One of the most wonderful, heartwarming, beautifully-made films of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival The Farewell. Written and directed by filmmaker Lulu Wang, her second feature after making Posthumous in 2014, The Farewell tells a very personal (and true) story from Wang's own life - about the time she had to fly from NYC all the way China to visit her grandma when they thought she was close to dying, but nobody was allowed to tell her this. The film is filled with heartfelt humor, genuine emotions that give the story so much life, along with confident filmmaking from Wang - who has an impressive grasp on managing an ensemble of memorable characters. It is a genuinely wonderful film, and one that has only grown on me more after first seeing it at the beginning of the festival. The Farewell stars Awkwafina in a defining role as Billi,...

Born in China, Lulu Wang moved to Miami when she was 6 — a dramatic shift not only in terms of geography, but culturally as well. This “divide,” says Wang, is a theme that plays out on multiple levels in the director’s Sundance-bound sophomore feature, “The Farewell,” a dry, comedic drama in which a Chinese family decides to not inform its elderly matriarch that she has Stage V cancer.
“I always felt the divide in my relationship to my family versus my relationship to my classmates and to my colleagues and to the world that I inhabit. That’s just the nature of being an immigrant and straddling two cultures,” says Wang, who based the film, starring Awkwafina, on her own grandmother’s illness, a story the helmer first shared with audiences on an episode of “This American Life.”
“This particular story resonated with me because of that,” continues Wang, whose debut feature,...

Daniele Thompson’s “Cézanne et Moi” follows the parallel paths of two of France’s most lauded artists: post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne and novelist Émile Zola. The pair first met at school in Aix-en-Provence and continued to maintain their close relationship as they both became working artists in Paris (with varying success).

The lack of space in popular culture for the more visionary voices is saddening. Such acclaimed artists as Vincent Van Gogh and Emily Dickinson were famously ahead of and therefore ignored in their time, only discovering popularity after their deaths. Perhaps it is this lingering prospect of stalled success that keeps depression and dramatics “practically […]

Everyone knows that dying is the best thing that can happen to an artist, but what happens if everyone just thinks you’ve died. Lulu Wang’s romantic comedy “Posthumous” explores that premise, focusing on a struggling artist who’s mistakenly thought to have committed suicide. The film stars Jack Huston (“Boardwalk Empire,” “American Hustle”) as the artist in question whom the public believes is dead. He decides to keep up the charade and pose as his brother, but when he meets a reporter, played by Brit Marling (“Another Earth,” “The Keeping Room”), his plan falls into jeopardy, especially after they start falling for each other. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

The currency of the contemporary seems to ride as much on the persona of an artist, as on the work itself, and the thus judging works in this realm can see the lines of celebrity and actual talent starting to blur. It can be frustrating to those who simply want to express themselves, and the […]

Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Their larger-than-life subject? Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comedian who became one of the...

Could it be that we are about to see a romantic comedy that is actually a fresh and original idea? I don’t want to get ahead of myself here but, even though my instincts dictate a cautious approach, I cannot help but be optimistic about Posthumous – the feature length debut of writer-director Lulu Wang, starring Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) and Brit Marling (The East) – for which we now have a poster.
The film introduces us to Liam Price (Huston) – a struggling artist in Berlin. When false reports of his death send the popularity of his name and his work skyrocketing, he decides to perpetuate and benefit from the myth by posing as his own brother. His plan hits an obstacle, however, when he begins to fall for McKenzie Grain (Marling) – a reporter assigned to cover the story. Jack Huston cast in 'Ben-Hur' remake? 'Boardwalk Empire' actor to follow in the footsteps of Ramon Novarro and Charlton Heston Jack Huston, best known for playing World War I veteran-turned-bootlegger-cum-assassin Richard Harrow in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire, may star in the latest Ben-Hur "remake," to be jointly produced by Paramount and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. I have "remake" between quotes because officially this fourth big-screen version of the semi-biblical epic (more on that below) isn't an actual remake of either the multiple Oscar-winning 1959 Ben-Hur or its 1925 predecessor, but a direct adaptation of former Civil War general Lew Wallace's 1880 bestselling novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ, which happens to be conveniently in the public domain. Timur Bekmambetov, whose credits include the Angelina Jolie-James McAvoy thriller Wanted and the supernatural cult classic Night Watch, has been attached as director of what is in fact A Tale...

Jack Huston is your new "Ben-Hur." The "Boardwalk Empire" star has been set to play the title role in MGM and Paramount's upcoming remake, according to Deadline. Timur Bekmambetov ("Wanted") is set to direct the epic film, in which Morgan Freeman was previously cast as Ildarin, the man who trains Ben-Hur to become a champion chariot racer. As we reported last month, Tom Hiddleston had previously been eyed for the lead role. Best known for his role as masked hitman Richard Harrow on the HBO crime drama, Huston has also appeared in a number of recent films including "American Hustle," "Kill Your Darlings" and David Chase's "Not Fade Away." Upcoming big-screen credits for the actor include "Posthumous" opposite Brit Marling, Nicholas Sparks adaptation "The Longest Ride" and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," an adaptation of the bestselling mashup novel by Seth Grahame-Smith. Based on the hugely popular 1880 novel by Lew Wallace,...

Tom Schilling is one of Germany’s biggest stars. A former child actor who has seen much success in his adult career, he gave strong turns in Before the Fall – winning an award that garnered him a scholarship to go study at the Strasburg Institute in New York – and 2008’s Oscar-nominated The Baader Meinhof Complex. Quite fluent in English, the actor will soon be seen in North America in the big-screen adaptation of Suite Française, the dramedy Posthumous starring Brit Marling, and the historical drama The Woman in Gold, starring Ryan Reynolds, Tatiana Maslany and Helen Mirren.
Back in his native Germany, however, Schilling received much acclaim for the 2012 film Oh Boy!, winning a German Film Award and a Bambi Award for his portrayal of aimless slacker Niko Fischer. Now, audiences in North America can check out his award-winning performance as well, although the film has a new title: A Coffee in Berlin.
