Three years have gone by since it was announced that Edgar Wright was coming on board to direct a new take on the novel The Running Man, which was written by Stephen King under his Richard Bachman pen name. The Running Man was, of course, previously turned into a film back in 1987 that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger – and even though that movie was very different from the source material, Schwarzenegger is still a tough act to follow. But now we know who’s brave enough to take on the challenge. Paramount has announced that Edgar Wright’s The Running Man is set to star Glen Powell of Top Gun: Maverick!
Wright is producing the film with Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
King’s novel has the following description: It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where...

Regina Hall came down with pneumonia while shooting Girls Trip, the irreverent 2017 comedy from Will Packer, a savant who repeatedly has shown an obdurate Hollywood that Black movies can mint money at the box office. Hall recalls Packer’s superpower: persuading anyone, be they filmmakers, studio execs or, in this case, his star, to do what needs to be done. “I came to work, they tested me, and I had a fever. Will said he would rearrange the entire schedule so we could shoot my part first: ‘If you can just get through this scene for me, you won’t have to do anything else,’ ” she says. “I did get through it, and he made sure I had everything I needed to heal.”

Familystyle has entered into a first-look deal with Entertainment 360, the joint venture between MRC Television and Management 360, Variety has learned exclusively.

The first project being developed under the deal is the series “The Occupant.” Kusama is attached to direct with Manfredi and Hay attached to write. The Los Angeles-set conspiracy is about a mentally fragile but idealistic person who becomes a reluctantly pivotal figure in the clandestine struggle between a seemingly benign modern megacorporation and the ragtag groups of Angelenos who oppose it.

Sony’s Bad Boys for Life, a sequel 17 years in the waiting, previewed at 3,154 theaters last night making a great $6.36M. That amount for the R-rated film is bigger than American Sniper‘s $5.3M preview, which turned out to be the record opener over the 2015 MLK holiday with a 4-day of $107.2M.
Sony is seeing a $38M opening for Bad Boys for Life, but tracking yesterday raised their projections to $50M-$56M for the weekend ahead of the $40M+ figures we saw midweek. Other MLK previews that Bad Boys for Life beat include Ride Along which made $1.1M off 9Pm previews back in 2014 and Ride Along 2 grossed $1.3M off 7 pm showtimes. Ride Along is the second highest opener over the Mlk holiday with $48.6M, while Ride Along 2 is 5th with $41M.

After Will Smith notched the biggest-grossing film of his career with last summer’s $1 billion hit Aladdin, can he keep the box office heat wave going with Martin Lawrence in reviving their Bad Boys franchise? The third film, Bad Boys for Life, finally arrives over Mlk weekend 13 years after the second movie, with a projected take between $42 million-$45 million over four days.
That range comes with a lot of asterisks. One major tracking firm believes the Sony pic could open to $48M, and note the pic does have the best reviews of the series with 77% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes — even better than Ride Along (18% Rotten) and Ride Along 2 (14%), two Mlk releases to which many keep comparing Bad Boys for Life‘s business prospects. Those two titles opened to $48.6M (second best for the four-day January holiday) and $41M, respectively.
Sony, which usually downplays its projections, is spotting $38M for the $90M production.

Sony’s long-awaited Will Smith and Martin Lawrence re-team Bad Boys for Life arrived on tracking today with a $40M-$45M 4-day opening projection. Among action comedies launched over the holiday, that forecast is around where Ride Along ($48.6M) and Ride Along 2 ($41M) opened. 2014’s Ride Along starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube was the record opening over Mlk until Clint Eastwood’s wide break of American Sniper rose the benchmark to a lofty height with $107.2M in January 2015.
Bad Boys for Life cost a reported $90M before P&a. Sony believes the 4-day debut is more in line with $38M. The pic follows Marcus Burnett (Lawrence) who is now a police inspector and Mike Lowery (Smith) who is in a midlife crisis. The two unite again when an Albanian mercenary, whose brother they killed, promises them an important bonus. The first movie launched in 1995 just as Smith and...

Universal’s “Good Boys” has done something that is becoming increasingly rare with its $21 million No. 1 opening at the box office. Not only is it the first original R-rated comedy in three years to top the box office charts, it is also only the second original film of any kind to open at No. 1 this year.
“Good Boys” was positioned by Universal to take advantage of this quieter August period after Spider-Man, Simba and Thanos have taken their share of summer moviegoers’ money. But Universal has also become a studio that has consistently found success with comedy at a time when so many titles in the genre have failed.
While a “Hangover”-level hit remains elusive, “Good Boys” joins films like “Night School,” “Ride Along 2” and the $115 million-grossing “Girls Trip” as Universal mid-budget comedies that have turned a profit in the last three years.

It’s always a little awkward to reexamine a beloved older film so rooted in its own era that the chance of it seeming somewhat barbaric today is inevitable. But our current culture seeks not only to revisit our past through a nostalgic lens but also to confront how history has enabled some of the toxicity and broken systems we struggle to dismantle now.
Rarely, though, has that reckoning been approached by a male filmmaker — in this case Tim Story — who aims to explore how we engage with images and dialogue we’ve been accustomed to from a hard-partying, system-overthrowing, womanizing hero better known as Shaft.

Usher, Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp, Matt Lauria, Titus Welliver, Cliff “Method Man” Smith, and Richard Roundtree, the original John Shaft.
Jj, aka John Shaft Jr. (Usher), may be a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death, he needs an education only his dad can provide. And while Jj’s own FBI analyst’s badge may clash with his dad’s trademark leather duster, there’s no denying family.

The opening weekend of “The Upside,” the Kevin Hart-Bryan Cranston remake of the worldwide French hit “Intouchables,” ended the three-week reign of “Aquaman.” It made just over of $20 million — besting estimates — and comes after a few weeks of controversy for Hart that suggested the long-delayed film might take a hit.
The odd-couple pairing of a wealthy and paraplegic New Yorker and the ex-con hired to care for him is a curious inverse of “Green Book.”
Initially a Weinstein film, it premiered to mixed critical response at Toronto 2017, with plans for an early 2018 opening upended by the company’s demise. Its pickup by Stx, a totally capable distributor with access to top theaters, still suggested to some a limit to its, shall we say, upside. The company has had several successes, but only one opening over $20 million. And Hart’s promo tours for the film got more attention for...

Screenwriter Phil Hay reveals that the idea for “Destroyer” really started to take shape when the character of Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman), a hard-bitten police detective, came into focus. Prior to that he and co-writer Matt Manfredi had some ideas “about a certain type of crime story. But when we discovered who Erin was, and specifically what her relationship was with her daughter, that’s what kind of lit the whole thing up for us.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hay and Manfredi above.
Directed by Karyn Kusama, this Annapurna release centers on a cop who spent years undercover in a drug ring until a tragedy upended her life. Her past decisions have destroyed her present, especially when it comes to her relationship with her rebellious teenage child (Jade Pettyjohn). But when the violent gang leader Silas (Toby Kebbell) returns after years in hiding she must confront her demons once and for all.

Early read here on Universal’s Night School which is tracking for a $9.5M opening day and a weekend that’s between $27M-$29M. While $30M would be a sweet take, that’s still an impressive number in these times for a comedy, Uni had the previous best opening this year with its R-rated teen pic Blockers at $20.6M.
Warner Bros. animated pic Smallfoot will own second with a $6M Friday (a few cents more than their 2016 Storks $5.7M opening day), and a three-day that’s between $20M and $22.5M. Two films in the final weekend of September, opening to $20M, seriously, exhibitors aren’t complaining especially with this month on track to be the second best ever with around $621M after last year’s record $698.5M.
Amblin’s via Uni The House With a Clock In Its Walls looking at a second weekend estimate of $13.7M,...

Exclusive: New Line has attached Eddie Murphy to star, and Tim Story to direct and produce, an untitled comedy inspired by the hit Walter Matthau-Jack Lemmon comedy Grumpy Old Men. John Davis is producing through his Davis Entertainment banner. He produced the original.
In the 1983 comedy, two lifelong neighbors who’ve been feuding since childhood find their dislike for one another exacerbated by the presence of a new neighbor who leaves each of them smitten. Ann-Margret played the neighbor and Donald Petrie directed it. They haven’t gotten as far as figuring out who’ll play opposite Murphy, but I have heard Samuel L. Jackson’s name as an inspired idea. He and Story just wrapped Shaft.
Story will produce through his The Story Company banner, and The Story Company’s Sharla Sumpter Bridgett is also producing. Story has directed eight studio features and he became the first...

CBS Chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves and Will Packer, producer of blockbusters like “Ride Along” and “Girls Trip,” will headline the 2018 edition of TheGrill, TheWrap’s annual media and leadership summit.
The ninth annual event, which runs October 1-2 in Los Angeles, will consist of two days of hard-hitting conversations, high-level networking and industry icons discussing the convergence of content and technology — led by TheWrap founder and editor-in-chief Sharon Waxman.
Tickets are on sale at the early bird rate starting now until June 8.

Among the topics that will be in focus at the conference are new digital distribution models; cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in entertainment; subscription services in theatrical exhibition; the latest in virtual and augmented reality; fake news and the impact on the upcoming election.
Moonves will be the keynote interview in a year when CBS and Viacom are in the news for a pending potential merger. The chief executive has distinguished CBS as a producer and seller of world-class content across all mediums, helping CBS grow in value, revenue and market share while identifying and developing key new revenue streams for future growth.

Under Moonves’ direction, the CBS Television Network has been No. 1 in viewers for 14 of the last 15 years, and currently has television’s No. 1 comedy/scripted program, “The Big Bang Theory”; No. 1 new comedy, “Young Sheldon”; No. 1 primetime news program, “60 Minutes”; No. 1 late night show, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”; and No. 1 daytime drama, “The Young and the Restless.”
At the same time, the company’s premium cable service, Showtime Networks, has generated millions of new subscribers on the heels of its successful owned series, such as “Ray Donovan,” “Billions,” as well as the critically acclaimed, Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning series “Homeland.”
Packer has achieved unprecedented success with nine consecutive No. 1 films, and one of the most successful R-rated comedies of all time, last summer’s blockbuster “Girls Trip.“
As founder and CEO of Will Packer Media, Packer is leading a first-of-its-kind media company, producing episodic scripted and unscripted series across TV and digital platforms, compelling content for brand clients and its own operated platforms.

Prior to founding Will Packer Media, the Emmy-nominated producer established himself as one of Hollywood’s blockbuster hit makers with nine of his films opening number one at the box office.
In 2013, Packer signed first-look production deals with Universal Pictures and Universal Television. Under both deals, he develops new projects for the studios under his Will Packer Productions banner. Packer’s No. 1 films include “Ride Along,” “Ride Along 2,” “No Good Deed,” “Think Like a Man” and “Stomp the Yard.”
Packer’s 2017 comedy, “Girls Trip,” had the best start for an R-rated comedy in two years, and grossed more than $100 million domestically. It was the first film to do so produced, directed, written by and star African Americans. In August 2015, he served as an executive producer on “Straight Outta Compton,” which grossed more than $201 million.
TheGrill leads the conversation on convergence between entertainment, media and technology, bringing together newsmakers to debate the challenges and opportunities facing content in the digital age. Diverse programming anchored by versatile talent and supported by big brands has always been the hallmark of Hollywood.
As technology brings new models to the fore — in production, distribution, display and monetization — TheGrill is a platform for the leaders, the deciders and the disruptors to explore this reconfigured landscape as it continues to transforms around us.
