Captivating tale of the north
15 April 2024
I do not understand the low rating this movie has at the moment. I found it a gripping tale that had me genuinely feeling for the characters and their struggles.

The movie is fine. Editing and scenography and all is good. It's not an American blockbuster. But as a European I am glad about that (and maybe used to Scandinavian pacing in films, but even so).

The new light cast on a culture that's often overlooked and treated as a "perfect little touristic outing", with its own struggles in our modern world, is a welcome one in my opinion. The story is built up well, and so are the characters. Give it a shot. I watched it in the original language as well. I feel like it does a lot more service to the movie and culture.

I genuinely believe people that have issues with the story or characters are as prejudiced as some characters in the movie itself.

Underwhelming at best
31 July 2023
While I love the Resident Evil franchise and can forgive it's plot jumps now and then or wonky dialogue, this movie takes it just beyond my tolerance. It's the typical RE action you can expect at this point, but it goes nowhere. And I feel sad for the people that were hyped about a full crew reunion. This doesn't do it justice.

The dialogue is very stiff, like the character models (who barely animate while talking), and it feels so disjointed from each other that some VAs seem to be recording from a closet in their homes and that got sewn together. Super corny.

The models are fine for a video game, not for a movie, honestly. Also, please give Jill an outfit or uniform. Why is she still in her civvies from home?!

I found this one very hard to sit through. Wish I could like it more...

Is It Cake? (2022– )

Pain to sit through
17 July 2023
Started watching this because I love some realistic cakes. But man... I found myself skipping through the episodes, narrowing them down to only minutes of watch time.

The host is trying so hard - too hard - to be funny and "comedic" it's like a child in the corner of the room begging for attention by being loud and "quirky".

The contestants are fine, I'm sure they have talent, but it's unfortunate they don't get to shine.

The cakes are promising! But I can't help but wonder where they all end up. Not to mention the chunks flopped to the floor by trying to get that "isn't this satisfying?" cut.

Now that season two is up, there is also tampering with the decoys to make them look crappy. Thus making the cakes look less imperfect. I mean... Smearing paint over a printer and setting cassettes on fire to hide your cake? Come on...

Good concept. Horrible execution. Save yourself from this one and just watch some YouTube cakes or so.

Destroying Decoys
17 July 2023
Aside from the most annoying host, weird judging choices, weird win choices, ... Why is it now becoming a thing to destroy the decoys and make them all messy so their own cakes will look better (as messy, or better then in comparison, I would assume).

This is really digging itself further into the abyss. If all of that is up in the game now, then what's next? Put cake on the decoys? And it's evident that others took note, because in the following episode the decoy destroying is back.

Waste of materials, waste of cakes, unfortunate waste of watch time, even though I already skip through most of these episodes.

Good docu
1 May 2022
I quite liked the documentary. It gave good insight into the Aztec history and building culture. Tenochtitlan is an architectural marvel and it's a shame it was destroyed, so the effort made to document the city and preserve its knowledge is admirable. Definitely something interesting to watch if you're into culture, architecture, history, ... Or just as an insightful watch!

Only downside was David Welton and his 'experimental archeologist' commentary. I'm getting second hand embarrassment from him being the only 'white scientist' over there with the much more skillful and experienced locals. Especially his dumb leaps for conclusions and annoying work ethics (just looks around, mouth gaping, and when he tries one thing he breaks a tool or gets injured immediately).

Character driven story battling with clichés
24 January 2022
The premise was interesting enough but shortly after, if you've seen a horror flick or two, you can piece everything together.

The main characters aren't that noteworthy, and if they didn't act exactly how the story wants them to, but instead a bit more logical, it would all fall apart. Also, filming lady MC, really should learn to point her camera at what she's filming and stop intentionally looking to get herself in trouble. Her life would be a lot easier making the docu series then, and it would be a lot more enjoyable if you don't have to sit and just imagine that all the archivist MC sees are just floors or people's chests...

But it's okay for a Netflix series, enjoyable enough to watch and stick around for.

Left me Disappointed
16 September 2021
I liked the idea and the setting. It seemed they were rocking a pretty original idea with the illness and so, giving those A Cure for Wellness vibes, but they completely ruined the ending with the cliché "cause of the horror" like most recent horror movies do. And even then it's pretty weird how the revelation unwinds and all...

Not worth the effort
17 July 2019
Look, you've already seen the best there is to get with the original animated movie. The characters look realistic and the atmosphere is convincing, sure, but they lack their personality. They can't mimic or interact as charming as the originals, you feel so distant from these renderings and the "funny voices" clash with the realistic style.

Watch the animation or a nature documentary but not this.
