Alive (2019)
Enjoyable but with one pretty big exception...
I really do love these docuseries that tell the tale of adventurers who survive various unexpected life threatening circumstances. This series just appeared on Amazon Prime but was surprisingly difficult to find on IMDB and especially surprising since it has been out for 5 years already without one single review. So heres my chance to get my two cents worth in. I have only watched episodes 6, 8 and 9 so far but they are solid and very well filmed and the stories tend to keep you on the edge of your seat, with one major exception. My rating of 8 is omitting this exception, my pet peeve of so many documentaries. My gripe is that it is formatted with commercial breaks in mind, even though the world is streaming nowadays with either zero or limited commercial breaks. I do understand why back in the day these shows would do a "quick rebiew" after every commercial break to bring possible new viewers up to speed. But this was filmed in 2019. Its newish. This docuseries does this perhaps twice as much as much as they did in the 90's. It is total overkill. I am guessing that the producer had to fill a certain amount of content with not nearly enough so this is the result. An entire 1/3rd of every episode is repeating what you just watched seconds ago and without the excuse of a commercial break. It is completely absurd and annoying and aggravating. It forces you to grab the remote and fast forward through the repeated footage and narration. Otherwise I is worth watching and it still is enjoyable. I'm just hoping that this review gives producers some insight to adjust this outdated approach to scripting these productions.
On Fire (2023)
Hard Nope!
This was the worst disaster movie I have ever watched, and I've seen them all. It is not even possible for not only one, but pretty much every single character to be so effing stupid in everything they do. From running to the fire to a random neighbor in flames, one hundred yards from the nearest blaze. The poor lady must have spontaneously combusted while her whimpers sounded more like she bit her lip than if she were ablaze. Nothing about this movie would make sense to anyone with an IQ over 50. If you want to see a decent forest fire movie or tv show, watch "They want me dead" or"Fire Country". Or watch this To see for yourself and be compelled to write a review like me for the first time in a decade.
Downsizing (2017)
Don't believe the bad hype
I've got 40 min left but love it so much I had to pause it and jump on IMDB. Im fighting back tears and smiling at the same time right now. That never happens with me. I'm in a hurry to get back to the film on Netflix and finish it before I go to a Christmas party, so I'm gonna leave you with that. Just watch it. You won't be dissapointed. Promise.
The Revenant (2015)
I see some similarities to Jedidiah Smith's story in this film...
Fur trappers attacked at a river. Survivors escape. Extreme cold winters. Barely surviving. Mr. Glass (Mr Smith) survives a grizzly bear attack. His injuries are life threatening, with half his face, ear, and scalp stitched back as good as can be by the only willing associate. I'm surprised nobody else has noticed these similarities. This is not actually a review. It is just an observation. I get my facts from a documentary entitled, Taming the Wild West: The Legend of Jedediah Smith. It is very compelling story about an extremely brave and talented pioneer in the history of the wild west. I recommend watching the documentary as well as this movie. The documentary is actually more entertaining.
The Curse of Oak Island (2014)
Worse than "Lost" if that is even possible.
What a shame that these grown men still believe in the equivalent of the tooth fairy. Common sense is non existent here with regards to practicality of this being even possible back before modern tools and wenches. Come on people. This is actually worse than 'Lost" But by all means, keep risking everything to dig up some Vikings garbage. The silliest part is the network of booby traps. That really cracks me up. That is all I have to say, but some moron at IMDb is requiring more lines before I can post this. Thank you Nancy Reagan. Apparently I must write a book on the topic just to say a few words. Okay this is crap. How much more do I need to rant here?
