As Season 3 of CBS’ CSI: Vegas opens this Sunday night, Max asks for a little one-on-one time with murder suspect Josh, before surrendering him to the cops proper — though she may not like what her colleague has to say.
In last May’s finale, Josh (played by Matt Lauria) was dead set on revenge after learning that his mother Jeanette (Lolita Davidovich) had been killed after a drug run. Forced off the case by Max (Paula Newsome), Josh went rogue and sprung his childhood Bff Trey (Daniel di Tomasso) from jail, and the two kidnapped a man named Kahn Schefter...

Plot: A law school-bound University grad (Toby Wallace) decides to spend his summer working with his fisherman half-brother (Ben Foster) in the hopes of finding adventure. But, he soon realizes that despite the rewarding work, you can only push things so far, as debts pile up and the brothers flirt with organized crime.
Review: You can understand where Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind is going from the start. As soon as fresh-faced Charlie (Toby Wallace) convinces his taciturn older half-brother, Tom (Ben Foster), to let him join his crew of hard-living fishermen, you know it’s not going to end with a pat on the back for a job well done. This is especially true once he lays eyes on a heartbreaking local girl, Mabel (Jenna Ortega), who he spies doing a drug deal with a crew member. Yet, even though nothing terribly surprising happens over the two-hour running time, it...

Hollywood is overflowing with stories about films that took years of blood, sweat and tears to bring to the screen. Brian Helgeland’s Finestkind represents one of the longest kinds.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter of Mystic River and veteran director of such films as Legend, 42, A Knight’s Tale and Payback finished the script when he was 28. He’s now 62. “The joke is that I wrote it before Toby Wallace and Jenna Ortega were born and Ben Foster was 10 years old. It’s very strange, but everything happens for a reason. I just had to wait for this whole cast to grow up so I could cast them,” he explained at the film’s West Hollywood premiere on Tuesday referring to his actors who star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford.

"You live. You die. It's the inbetween that counts." Paramount+ has unveiled the official trailer for a fishing industry crime thriller called Finestkind, the latest from writer / filmmaker Brian Helgeland. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last month, and is being released directly on streaming on Paramount+ in December this year. Ben Foster, Toby Wallace, Tommy Lee Jones, and Jenna Ortega star in this film about a crew of fishermen who tread dangerous waters after their debts start piling up. Set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang. With another brilliantly imposing performance by Jones, the film also reveals itself to be a story about fathers who can’t always be the best examples for their sons. The full cast includes Ismael Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar,...

Tommy Lee Jones has yet to anchor a series in Taylor Sheridan’s vast TV universe — but at least he’s starring in an upcoming film from the producer, the crime drama “Finestkind.” You can watch the brand-new trailer for the Paramount+ film above.
In “Finestkind,” Jones plays the father of two sons who were raised in very different worlds (Ben Foster and Toby Wallace), who reunite over a fateful summer, first putting their father’s fishing boat in jeopardy and then embarking into even more dangerous waters.
According to the official synopsis, the movie is “set against the backdrop of commercial fishing, the story takes on primal stakes when desperate circumstances force the brothers to strike a deal with a violent Boston crime gang.”
The movie also stars Jenna Ortega, Cruz Cordova, Aaron Stanford, Scotty Tovar, Tim Daly, Lolita Davidovich and Clayne Crawford. Fun fact: an earlier iteration of...

There’s a stagnating whiff of familiarity hanging over Finestkind, Brian Helgeland’s personally-informed portrait of a splintered family of fishermen struggling to reconnect with each other over choppy New Bedford, Massachusetts, waters.
Although anchored by a number of strong performances, particularly those of Ben Foster and fresh-faced Toby Wallace as estranged half-brothers attempting to find common ground despite their different upbringings, Helgeland’s meandering film still feels stuck in another place in time. It actually isn’t surprising to learn that the writer-director, himself coming from a Norwegian family of fisherfolk working in the U.S. industry since the 1930s, had initially crafted a version of the script 25 years ago, at the time offering the the role of Wallace’s Charlie to Heath Ledger. Over the following years, Helgeland would complete three more versions of the script, but while the end result is set in the present day, there’s a palpable throwback,...

For an hour, Finestkind is the kind of movie they don’t make any more, and just when you’re starting to adapt to its gentle, circadian rhythms (which is about halfway through), it becomes the kind of movie they make all the time. Though it just about works, it’s a curious hybrid of emotional felladrama and gangster realism, something writer Brian Helgeland has essayed before, notably with his script for Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River. A few years back, this could have been a Malpaso production too, and it’s not hard to imagine Eastwood in the role played here by Tommy Lee Jones, an awards-friendly supporting role that gives the veteran actor his very own mini-Gran Torino.

I don’t know where to start on “Finestkind,” the saccharine, incomprehensible northeastern America fishing family drama from writer-director Brian Helgeland. As I watched this turgid muddle, a messy ball of nonsensical threads and worse performances, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Roger Ebert’s old maxim: No good film is too long, and no bad film is too short.
But what about a film so driven off course it needs a come to Jesus moment? “Finestkind” is that sort of picture. Clunky, nauseating, and perfunctory, it’s shocking that before the World Premiere screening in Toronto Helgeland called the movie a deeply personal work, the type of film he wished had been his first, and the kind he fears might be his last.
The introduction was enough to make you hope for a merely mindlessly entertaining flick. Unfortunately, “Finestkind” doesn’t even pass that lowest of bars.

“Finestkind,” the name of both Brian Helgeland’s new film and the high-line fishing boat Tommy Lee Jones captains within it, is one of those words that New Englanders find hard to define, but seem to have no trouble using in a sentence. It means quality — of fish, of people, of principles — and it sets the bar for the shaggy family portrait Helgeland crafts around two half-brothers wrestling with their place in the blue-collar New Bedford community.
The movie, alas, is just so-so, tripping over its own feet for the first couple reels until such time as the siblings cross the Northern Line to (illegally) dredge for scallops in Canadian waters, and then it gets good. Not the genre elements, mind you. There’s a stock plot in which the brothers need $100,000 to get the Finestkind ship out of impound, turning to a harebrained heroin-smuggling plot that goes sideways in...

When CSI: Vegas Season 2 ended, one of the Crime Lab’s own was in cuffs. But what exactly did he do? While we wait for Season 3 (a premiere date for which is unknown due to the writers and actors strikes), that’s what we can’t stop wondering. In the finale, Josh (Matt Lauria) learned his mother (Lolita Davidovich) was murdered, and along with Trey (Daniel Di Tomasso), ran his own investigation that got a little out of hand. At one point, he tricked Kahn Schefter (Shane Callahan), who he thought only knew who killed Jeanette into thinking he was bleeding out (using blood bags — it’s helpful to be a CSI). But then, it turned out, Kahn was the person who killed Josh’s mother … and the team found him dead near the end of the episode. Max (Paula Newsome) and Serena (Ariana Guerra) then found Josh. “Why?” Max asked,...

But then he learns that this guy is his mother’s kille … and that man is found dead by the rest of the team. When Max (Paula Newsome) and Serena (Ariana Guerra) track down Josh, he lets them cuff him. But is Josh a killer? We tried to get some answers out of Lauria, who also broke down Josh’s feelings for both Allie (Mandeep Dhillon) and Serena. Everyone loves a comeback story. Just look at Tiger Woods. And Hollywood especially loves a good comeback such as Judy Garland with 1954’s “A Star is Born.” The latest Tinseltown comeback is none other than Brendan Fraser, who over the past 30 years starred in everything from lowbrow comedies (“Encino Man”) to action blockbusters ( “The Mummy”) to acclaimed dramas and even a Best Picture Oscar winner (“Crash”).
But the 53-year-old actor has gone through a rough patch: a divorce including a well-publicized alimony issue in 2013, health issues, depression, the death of his mother and the 2018 revelation where he alleged, he had been sexually assaulted by the former head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. in 2003. After stepping away for a while, Fraser has been slowly working his way back appearing in such TV series as Showtime’s “The Affair” and DC Universe and HBO Max series “Doom Patrol.”

Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.
Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.
Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
The willowy blonde actress with the characteristically throaty voice appeared in two Altman films in 1970; the other was the more experimental “Brewster McCloud,” in which she starred with Bud Cort and Michael Murphy. In this film, which did not have a conventional narrative, Kellerman played Louise, the mother of Cort’s bewinged character, Brewster.

Before you know it, Hallmark will be knee-deep in Christmas.
But before you put on you jolly cap and decorate the tree, we still have some other celebrating to do.
Good Witch: Curse From a Rose airs Saturday, October 19 at 8/7c.
The Good Witch got its start with Halloween, and Middleton is going all out for the holiday. But someone visits Middleton with the hopes of turning their festivities upside down.
That someone is the aptly named Autumn Delaney, Cassie’s long-lost college roommate. From Cassie’s perspective, all is well, but unbeknownst to her (or is it?), Autumn harbors some ill will toward her old friend.
The Good Witch Season Finale Review: The Graduation
Bringing Autumn to life is film and television actress Lolita Davidovich, and she beautifully portrays someone who has lost their grounding force.
Have no doubt that Cassie will win over the heart of her friend...

It’s hard to know much exaggeration is used in movies about crazy Suth’un politics, when some of the serious movies resemble Julius Caesar with mint juleps. This true story is about an old-school populist Louisiana governor who falls for a nationally-known stripper, the famous Blaze Starr, and is told from the stripper’s Pov. Paul Newman is at his late-career best, and Lolita Davidovich lights up the screen. The governor can get away with most anything except what he wants to do most — pass some color-blind laws about hiring and voting.

When the original “Law & Order” was cancelled in 2010, people took the news hard. So hard, in fact, that the decades-spanning procedural was mourned publicly on the very network that cancelled it:
“I, for one, love cop shows,” Tracy Jordan says on “30 Rock” (Season 5, Episode 3, “Let’s Stay Together”). “I can’t wait for ‘Law & Order’ to come back,” he adds, right before Grizz whispers in his ear, breaking the bad news.
“Why? It was a tentpole! A tentpole!!” Tracy screams.
Seven years later, he’s not wrong. Though only one of the four spinoffs is still on the air — “Law & Order: Svu” returns September 27 on NBC — the franchise remains a memorable part of the cultural landscape, with its format, music, characters, and storytelling still easily identifiable to millions of viewers. Its influence on other series cannot be understated, including the hit limited series the latest “Law & Order” spinoff is emulating.

The idea of a “fall TV season” feels particularly antiquated in 2017, as two of the year’s buzziest series (“Game of Thrones” and “Twin Peaks”) have already wrapped for the year. Fall may even be a bit of an afterthought now compared to spring, as networks aim to catch Emmy voters with prestige TV premieres when campaign season gets underway.
And yet, there’s nearly 70 years of tradition with the fall TV season. It’s when Nielsen still resets the calendar for the new TV year; when blue chip advertisers like the automotive sector roll out their own new wares; football season returns (don’t discount that huge impact on TV schedules); and the weather gets chilly, which conceivably means more viewers watching TV indoors.
This year, they’ll find a lot of familiar titles on broadcast TV, including the return of NBC’s “Will & Grace”; a prequel to “The Big Bang Theory,...

NBC is rounding out the cast for its upcoming Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders. Lolita Davidovich (The Longest Ride), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Elizabeth Reaser (The Twilight Saga) and Larry Cedar (Trial & Error) are the latest to join the limited series from Dick Wolf and Rene Balcer. The eight-episode first season will focus on the infamous case of Lyle (Miles Gaston Villanueva) and Erik Menendez (Gus Halper), brothers who were convicted in 1996 of…...

Stars: John Lithgow, Lolita Davidovich, Steven Bauer, Frances Sternhagen, Gregg Henry, Tom Bower, Mel Harris, Teri Austin, Gabrielle Carteris | Written and Directed by Brian De Palma
One of the reasons I enjoy Arrow Video releases are the love they give to underrated movies. While this is my first time watching Raising Cain, it is fair to say that after watching it I’m surprised it doesn’t get more praise. Maybe the new Director’s Cut that is included will change that… for this release at least.
When Carter (John Lithgow) reports his wife Jenny (Lolita Davidovich) missing to the police, it is soon revealed that her lover Jack (Steven Bauer) may have killed her. When Carter is recognised by an old retired cop though for his likeness to Dr. Nix a discredited doctor believed to be dead, his story comes under scrutiny as does the possible connection to recent...

When Brian De Palma’s Raising Cain bowed in American theaters during the summer of 1992, it was anticipated by fans of the director as a welcome return to the sort of formalist genre contraption he hadn’t indulged in since the creative blow-out (forgive me) of Body Double eight years earlier. However, when the lights came up, even within the ranks of the De Palma faithful there was polarization. A handful defended it as one of the director’s masterpieces, while a greater number seemed to consider it at best middle-tier De Palma, a fully committed attempt to deal with typical De Palma-esque narrative elasticity and thematic concerns such as time, chronology and dream logic, all in the context of an examination of the morphing perimeters of American masculinity and parental responsibility which somehow, in the end, seemed as out of balance as its psychically fractured protagonist. Meanwhile, the...

When it comes to the discussion of Brian De Palma's collected oeuvre, Raising Cain is often met with indifference or seen as a well-intended failure when compared to his early filmography. Scream Factory's new, definitive Collector’s Edition Blu-ray release will no doubt change that conversation, mostly thanks to De Palma's preferred cut included on the second disc, a passionate fan-made edit that shifts the narrative perspective and overall tone into a completely different beast.
After the failure of adapting The Bonfire of the Vanities, the theatrical cut of Raising Cain was a noble return to what De Palma does best: cinematically manipulating the audience like voyeuristic puppets, much like he did with Body Double. In “Changing Cain: Brian De Palma's Cult Classic Restored,” one of the features included on the Blu-ray’s second disc, film critic Jim Emerson discusses how the opening shot of a...

I’d tell you that Raising Cain is an F’ed up movie, but it’s a De Palma flick, so you probably already know that. This is a film from 1992, starring John Lithgow in several roles, as well as Lolita Davidovich, and Steven Bauer, who appears in every movie since 1984, apparently. It’s a thriller that revolves around child abduction for the purpose of scientific experimentation, and multiple personalities disorder. Though it might be doing you a disservice to say that, but enough time has passed since the release of this movie, and it’s kind of the selling point, so it’s hard to mention it without disclosing that Lithgow’s character suffers from the disease, and within the film, you are exposed to several different versions of him. It doesn’t really let you in on the fact that he doesn’t actually have a twin brother,...
