Starring as one of the first proper live-action feature-length leads of a Superman movie, Christopher Reeve left behind an unmatched legacy. A role that he held onto for nine years saw his popularity sky-rocket and his persona greatly amplified. Additionally, his off-screen life also largely mirrored his on-screen role as every day brought with it new adventures and the fearless star had no hesitation in trying out exploring something he had never done before, almost on a daily basis.

Despite all such highs, tragedy struck him in the first half of the 1990s. An unforeseen situation not only crippled him but also left him in deep psychological pain. Almost losing out on the will to live, the actor found strength in his wife, Dana Reeve. The actress presented an act of bravery and hope that still stands tall as one of the most emotional stories ever told.

Acclaimed documentary feature Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is going to be getting a cinema release later this year: more here.
One of the documentary films that is firmly on our 2024 radar is Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, a film that promises to use previously-unseen footage to honour the life of a hero to millions, not just for his onscreen heroics but also for his bravery in real life.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project – hailing from filmmakers Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui – will look at Reeves’ ‘Hollywood and personal history’ whilst also charting the actors’ ‘tireless activism for disability awareness that followed his paralysis.’
The upcoming documentary certainly sparked our interest when we first heard about it at the beginning of the year as it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival.

The Arrow series is undoubtedly one of the best superhero Television series that became the originator of the Arrowverse. It revolves around Oliver Queen, a billionaire playboy who assumes the vigilante persona to fight crime and corruption in the city.

In the first week of May 2024, the first images of James Gunn's Superman were posted, with David Corenswet now inhabiting the role of the Man of Steel.
Looking at Corenswet, it's easy to see that this Superman is a throwback to Christopher Reeve's groovy interpretation of the Superman of 1978.
Not just a superhuman being but a likable dork with a heart of gold, the Superman that baby boomers fell in love with.
It's the opposite of what Zack Snyder envisioned with Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- an aging Superman feeling alienated from humankind and looking downright surly.
(The face of Henry Cavill's Superman, that imperious, disenchanted, loveless face, was a work of art. He would do a fantastic job as a villain for a change.)
Despite perfect casting, Snyder went full Emo Superman with his Dcu, adding a splash of moodiness...

James Gunn is quite busy carefully crafting his new Dcu from the ruins of the former Dceu. And just like his predecessor, Zack Snyder, he is commencing with a story based on the Man of Steel. He has caused major ripples among the fan community after revealing his version of the Superman costume.
All-Star Superman
Choosing Superman to officially inaugurate his DC Universe was a smart move, considering how the ‘Hope’-man was the first comic book superhero, as well as DC’s first hero. His costume is quite iconic, which is why fans pay attention to every detail when it comes to live-action.
However, in the costume reveal, there’s a lot more going on than just David Corenswet rocking his Superman suit. Can you spot what it is?

There are still many who have not been able to get over the fact that Henry Cavill will no longer be returning to the Dcu as Superman, despite his promising cameo in Black Adam. This is mostly because people truly enjoyed seeing the actor get in character, put on his cape, and come to the aid of those in need, just like a perfect superhero. Many would even agree that Henry Cavill is the embodiment of Superman.
Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel (2013)
Zack Snyder is also of the same opinion as before the release of Man of Steel, he explained how his lead actor was “Superman-ish” in the best way possible. According to the director, Henry Cavill is kind of like Superman in the sense that he’s kind, humble, and naïve, all while asserting just the right amount of dominance needed to let people know to not walk all over you.

Zack Snyder laid the foundation for the now-defunct DC Extended Universe with his 2013 film starring Henry Cavill. Departing from traditional portrayals, Snyder offered a darker interpretation of the iconic character, who is generally seen as a beacon of hope. Despite this departure, Cavill’s portrayal has continued to resonate with fans, earning him praise for capturing the essence of Superman.

It’s Superman!
On Monday, “Superman” writer-director James Gunn released the first look at star David Corenswet as Superman in an Instagram post.
The photo depicts the Man of Steel sitting in what appears to be a luxury highrise condo in his iconic blue, red, and yellow costume. He’s pulling on his boots, presumably to deal with the pink-and-blue comet-like burst that’s visible in the sky out the window. He may be a nearly immortal superhero from the planet Krypton, but he puts his boots on one at a time like everyone else.

It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's our first official look at actor David Corenswet suited up in James Gunn's "Superman" film!
In a surprise Monday reveal, the DC Universe head honcho took to social media to announce what countless fans have been anxiously waiting for. With all sorts of speculation surrounding the tone, style, and inspiration for the kickoff to DC's latest big-screen reboot, Gunn finally gave us our best look yet at what's to come in the very near future. In a new Instagram post, the filmmaker released an image taking place entirely in-camera (despite some funky-looking CGI in the background) of Corenswet's look in the famous tights, complete with the familiar S logo and cape (and trunks). Longtime fans will no doubt clock the New 52 influence on display, along with the actor's surprising similarities to Henry Cavill's general look in the Zack Snyder films.

Superman filmmaker James Gunn and star David Corenswet have posted on social media the new Man of Steel suit.
It’s a rather rugged costume, not as pristine as previous feature iterations, indicating the edgy take that Gunn is taking here with his movie. The film will be Warner Bros.’ fourth time revamping the DC superhero in longform (not counting big screen serials) following filmmakers Richard Donner (1978), Bryan Singer (2006) and Zack Snyder (2013).
Corenswet follows in the footsteps of such actors playing the son of Jor-El in feature films as Christopher Reeve (1978-87), Brandon Routh (2006) and Henry Cavill (2013-2022).
This is a unit shot, it’s not an overly produced CGI shot, and it’s indicative of what we’ll see in the film. Not everything is green screen, and that creates an environment that’s significantly better for the actors.

David Corenswet gets dressed as Superman one boot at a time in the first look at the actor in costume. Superman writer-director James Gunn revealed the image on social media Monday.
The unveiling of an actor in costume as Superman is a rare affair, akin to the first look at a new James Bond. Only three men have starred as the character in its nearly 50-year big screen career: Christopher Reeve (1978-87), Brandon Routh (2006) and Henry Cavill (2013-2022), not counting serials that played in movie theaters in the late 1940s and early ’50s.

Christopher Reeve’s Superman is most people’s definitive portrayal of the character. Richard Donner successfully balanced the superheroic aspects of the character along with the nerdy charm of his alter ego Clark Kent. The success of the first film led to Reeve returning for three sequels.

Donner’s Superman has been the benchmark that every other iteration of the character aims to achieve. However, Superman II did not see the return of Donner and many of his intended scenes did not feature in the theatrical film. An interesting but flawed deleted scene featuring Lois and Clark has fans relived that it did make it into the final cut.

Seldom have actors in the history of Tinseltown left as much of an enduring legacy as Marlon Brando. The late actor’s legacy can still be felt in the film industry, thanks to his iconic roles in flicks like The Godfather and A Streetcar Named Desire. But one of his most elusive and challenging roles was in Francis Coppola’s 1979 epic war movie, Apocalypse Now.
Did we mention that this was the role that paved the way for one of the most enduring villains in recent superhero cinema?

Josh Brolin brought Thanos to life in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) in a way that had never been seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And according to the actor himself, his inspiration came from Brando’s portrayal in Apocalypse Now.
After all, Brando pushed the envelope with his portrayal of rebellious military officer Colonel Kurtz.

DC/Dox has unveiled the lineup for its second annual edition, which takes place in Washington, D.C., from June 13-16. The documentary festival will kick things off with “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” the Warner Bros. Discovery film that premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
The second edition of the fest includes 51 features and 47 shorts from 17 countries. That’s up from last year’s state of 31 features and 21 shorts from eight countries. This year’s lineup is made of 60% of filmmakers identifying as women or non-binary. Films will screen at venues including Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, the Burke Theatre at the U.S. Navy Memorial, and the National Archives.

As far as superhero films are concerned, the aura of the character is not just in the powers they possess but also in their appearance. The costume, therefore, is a key component that adds to the appeal of these icons from the comic book world. From Marvel’s Spider-Man to DC’s Superman, costume designers in Hollywood have pushed the envelope to bring out the nuances of these characters.

Is there any current director who is more controversial than Zack Snyder? It’s wild how divisive a figure he is, with his fans nearly cult-like in their devotion, while his detractors are just as fervent. Here at JoBlo, we’ve always been ardent supporters, even if we haven’t unquestioningly praised all of his films. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to do an all-around ranking of his films (although we’ve left the animated Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole off the list). So, without further ado, here’s our ranking from worst to best.
Sucker Punch:
I’ll admit to not knowing precisely what Snyder was trying to pull off when I saw this movie in 2011. It remains the most obscure of his live-action films. It is a tough nut to crack, being that it’s a fantastical, hyper-surrealistic fantasy centred around a woman...

In the 90 years since his creation, Superman has had many different versions. There have been many to stand out from these, for good and bad reasons. Perhaps one of the most controversial has to be Henry Cavill’s Man of Steel, which is a darker version of the character. While many fans loved the fresher approach, there were many fundamental changes made that completely went against the character’s philosophy.

Henry Cavill may not be reprising his role as the Man of Steel anytime soon, but fans don’t need to burst into tears for him. The Hollywood Reporter discovered that the actor was paid a whopping $250,000 ‘each’ for his brief appearances in Black Adam and The Flash.
Yes, that’s what it is—a quarter of a million dollars for just a few minutes of screen time. Not bad for a day’s work, right? While some may feel sorry for Cavill for not getting the chance to star in James Gunn’s 2025 Superman release, it’s abundantly clear that the actor isn’t hurting for cash. Also, compared to Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, the Immortals actor received a higher salary for his brief cameos in other DC flicks.

Cavill was a hot commodity at Warner Bros. Pictures before Gunn and Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Studios.

Superman is one of those superheroes who has always gained wide momentum among fans, becoming their favorite in the least time possible and continuing to rule their hearts through the indelible marks left behind by their stories. That being said, he has also earned multiple animated and live-action adaptations over the years, including the most recent one under James Gunn.

Superman, the beloved Kryptonian superhero from the DC Universe, has been played by multiple actors over the years in numerous different adaptations — both good and not-so-good. And of all the talented masterminds who embodied him, the late Christopher Reeve and Henry Cavill are widely regarded as the best ones by far.
Superman in the comics. But oftentimes, Reeve’s performance is deemed even better than Cavill’s, and for reasons all too understandable. In fact, not only do fans of the late actor hold this opinion, but even the renowned Tim Daly, who voiced Clark Kent in the iconic award-winning Superman: The Animated Series, believes that Reeve’s Kal-El was “wonderful” for a reason that might not sit well with Cavill’s fans.

Superman director James Gunn made a video appearance during the Warner Bros panel for CinemaCon. While he didn’t have a lot to reveal just yet, he did tease that next year will be the “summer of Superman” as he revealed a closer look at the new logo, which seems reminiscent of the one from the Max Fleischer cartoons.
DC Studios co-ceo Peter Safran came out on the CinemaCon stage to tease the other Superman movie: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story. The heart-wrenching documentary was acquired by Warner Bros. earlier this year for $15 million, and Safran revealed that it would be released in theaters this September. An exact date wasn’t specified, but the trailer screened at CinemaCon brought tears to more than a few in the audience.

Kevin Feige is known for his significant role in shaping the MCU. As Marvel Studios’ President, he has been instrumental in its remarkable success since its launch in 2008 with ‘Iron Man.’
However, Feige’s favorite superhero movie, surprisingly, isn’t a Marvel character film. It’s about Dcu’s most notable and influential superhero of all time – Superman.
During the 2017 Oscar ceremony, Feige shared that before beginning any MCU production, he always re-watches ‘Superman,’ directed by Richard Donner and released in 1978, starring Christopher Reeve as the iconic Man of Steel.
The film depicts Superman’s origin story, from his infancy on Krypton to his heroic deeds in Metropolis. Alongside Reeve, the cast includes Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder, and others. ‘Superman’ was the most expensive film made up to that point, with a budget of $55 million. It was both a critical and financial success, earning worldwide box office earnings of $300 million,...

Both Batman and Superman were meant to inspire; one lived in the shadow of fear, the other in the light of hope. The two superheroes have similar goals in life: they want to thwart evil while leading separate lives in order to defend their city and its citizens. They follow different paths that pit them against the most evil villains; they are neither allies nor rivals.
Batman and Superman, no matter what, never lose sight of who they are and, thus, are adamant about upholding their moral standards. There is a fundamental distinction in the characters’ origin stories, even though at times it seems like they are more alike than different.
