“It was a surprise really to everyone,” remembers “Found” star and producer Shanola Hampton about the big reveal at the end of the pilot episode. Creator and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll didn’t tell her ahead of time. “She told me about the character and what she stood for and the cause that she was fighting for and the backstory, but never told me the twist.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Hampton above.

We've all been there before.
You fall in love with a show. You fall in love with the characters. You fall in love with a Universe. And then, suddenly, without warning, your favorite show is canceled, and you feel a tremendous loss.
Television can be a comfort to many, and when you find that show or that perfect character that you connect with, it downright sucks to know you won't get to see them anymore.
Over the years, many shows have been cut short ahead of their time.
While others may have had a decent run, with years under their belt, the cancellation can still feel abrupt, especially when they don't get to end the series on their own terms.
We've seen fan campaigns change studios' minds and cancellations reversed at the last minute (S.W.A.T. says hi!), but unfortunately, most shows don't have that same luck.

Television shows seem well-organized and choreographed. Yet, not everything about them always goes according to plan.
For example, an incidental character sometimes steals a scene and creates memorable television history.
Then, there are the characters who take things a step further by stealing scenes repeatedly until they become the stars themselves.
Particular characters, such as Dr. Gregory House on House, are often created to be standouts. Yet, occasionally, those main protagonists are entirely overshadowed.
In rare instances, characters who were supposed to be incidental became regulars and took over entire shows.
The Fonz on Happy Days (1974-1984)
Happy Days underwent several changes, including the recasting and eventual disappearance of Chuck Cunningham's character, but Arthur (The Fonz) Fonzarelli's addition most dramatically altered the show's trajectory.
Initially, Happy Days focused on the Cunningham family, especially teenager Richie (Ron Howard). The Fonz (Henry Winkler) was a side character. However, the motorcycle-riding, leather jacket-wearing greaser soon took over.

Since it premiered in January 2023, ABC's Will Trent has been a massive hit. The network just renewed the series for a third season, and the Gbi and Apd will return to solve more cases.
The renewal wasn't much of a surprise because Will Trent's ratings have risen to 4.8 million viewers and a .4 in the demo.
What makes Will Trent so intriguing to watch? Why is it different from other police procedurals? There are many reasons, but at its core are the characters.
Based on Karin Slaughter's best-selling novels, the hour-long procedural focuses on Special Agent Will Trent of the Gbi.
While no two series are the same, Will Trent is most similar to The Mentalist and Mobk, whose protagonists also see key details differently than most investigators. Adrian Monk also had a dark past, and digging into a character's past allows for more interesting storylines.
Will Trent Connects the Characters to the Cases.

As painful as it was to watch almost all of Mosley & Associates walk out on Gabi (Shanola Hampton) after she revealed to them she’d been keeping her kidnapper Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) in her basement (and he escaped) — except Dhan (Karan Oberoi), who dealt with that blow before that — in the Found Season 1 finale, there’s more heartbreak to come because there’s still someone who doesn’t know: Trent (Brett Dalton). The detective did have reason to suspect something was going on, after Gabi referred to Sir in the present tense to him, something he noted to Margaret (Kelli Williams). But there are also his feelings for Gabi to consider; the two have a history, but she’s put a stop to anything happening now due to the situation with Sir. There’s also the matter of where she is in her healing to understandably consider. When Trent does find out,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Found Season 1 finale “Missing While Forgotten.”] The truth comes out in the Found Season 1 finale — and the way it does makes it even more painful than we expected. The episode begins with Gabi (Shanola Hampton) discovering that Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) has escaped her basement, where she had her kidnapper chained up, and she and Dhan (Karan Oberoi) realize he must still think she’s missing. Though she wants to immediately tell the rest of Mosley & Associates — especially Lacey (Gabrielle Walsh), whom Sir had also kidnapped as a kid — a priority case requires them to keep everyone’s focus on that missing person. But once that case is over and after Gabi realizes that Sir, still out there, will never stop hunting her, she tells Lacey, Margaret (Kelli Williams), and Zeke (Arlen Escarpeta). All we see is her joining them in the conference room and their heartbreaking reactions before one by one,...

Shanola Hampton doesn’t think audiences are really prepared for what’s about to go down in the Found season finale.
The NBC series wraps its first season on Tuesday with an episode that the star told Deadline left her “in awe.”
After the penultimate episode, when Hampton’s Gabi Moseley finally revealed to her M&a colleague Dhan [Karan Oberoi] that she’d not only been been holding her kidnapper Sir [Mark-Paul Gosselaar] captive in her basement but using him to help solve the firm’s missing persons cases, her carefully kept secret seems like it’s close to unraveling. According to Hampton, the final episode will feature a moment between Gabi and the rest of the M&a crew that is so raw, she had a visceral reaction to filming the scene.
“By the end of it, Gabi ends up in the fetal position on the ground,” she said.

Found certainly left us with quite the cliffhanger to end its 2023 episodes — Gabi (Shanola Hampton) calling someone about Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), her kidnapper she’s been keeping chained in her basement — but it also left one character in perhaps a better place than she’s been. Ever since Margaret’s (Kelli Williams) son went missing 13 years ago, she’s spent every night at the bus station where she last saw him. Her therapist took her back to that day in their latest session. Doing something like that is “incredibly intense and takes you back to the beginning and then it’s unfolding all of these truths,” and so she wanted to make sure it was given the respect it deserves, Williams told TV Insider. Filming that was, she admitted, “fun,” in the sense that “it was very emotionally intense, but it was one of those good acting challenges. But I...

We know Will Trent Season 2 has some big shoes to fill.
Will Trent Season 1 was one of the best freshmen shows of 2023 since it delivered stellar cases and emotional character development.
The season finale left us with an emotional cliffhanger, wondering about Angie’s road to recovery and how Will would deal with that and learning about Amanda’s role in his childhood. Viewers have become invested in seeing how these characters heal from James’s destruction.
Now that the second season is just around the corner, we’ve compiled a list of the top expectations we need to see to keep tuning in and see if the series will last many seasons.
Since Karin Slaughter wrote many Will Trent novels, that’s very possible, so hopefully, the series will heed these suggestions.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Found Season 1 Episode 11 “Missing While Interracial.”] After Gabi (Shanola Hampton) and Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) wrestled for control for most of the first season of Found, the NBC drama just took it away from both of them in the last episode of 2023. With two episodes remaining from Season 1 (it’s already been renewed), Gabi learned that Sir was telling the truth and didn’t kill Annie — though he did threaten her, and that’s why she never came back to help the kidnapped teen (A’Zaria Carter) — and slipped up by referring to him in the present tense to Trent (Brett Dalton). Then, in front of Sir, she called someone and told that person to come over and it was about Sir. After that, Sir is the least in control we’ve seen him, Gosselaar confirmed. “That’s the moment where he’s worried about the future of this relationship,” he told TV Insider.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Found Season 1 Episode 11 “Missing While Interracial.”] The good news: We don’t have to wait too long to get answers about that phone call that ended the last Found episode of 2023. The drama returns with the final two episodes of its first season — it’s already been renewed — on January 9. In “Missing While Interracial,” Trent (Brett Dalton) informs Gabi (Shanola Hampton) that Annie, whom she thought Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) killed and that’s why she didn’t return to help her, died two years ago. Gabi slips and asks, “So you’re saying Sir is telling me the truth?” before ending their call. Then, she goes downstairs and tells Sir she should’ve buried him the day she found him and makes a call: “It’s me. I need you to come over. It’s about Sir.” Who’s on the other end? TV Insider tried to get answers from...

Despite the odd cliche, a thriller with an unnerving picture at its core is coated with unsettling energy and a standout performance from Mexican actor Natalia Córdova-Buckley
Simon Ross’s capable debut can be hung in a gallery of films featuring unnerving paintings, from The Picture of Dorian Gray to Ghostbusters 2 and In the Mouth of Madness. Wife turned carer Sofia (Natalia Córdova-Buckley) stumbles across an uncanny canvas in the attic of the mansion to which she has brought her catatonic husband Alex (Ryan Kwanten); it is supposedly a self-portrait of his great-grandfather, but she is startled to find that it is a spitting image of Alex. While this gothic chestnut, and the psychodrama that follows – with Sofia unsure how much is the product of her own under-siege mind – feel familiar, Ross injects them with a troubling inner turbulence that bodes well for him.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Found Season 1 Episode 10, “Missing While Indoctrinated.”] Did Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) kill the one person who could have helped Gabi back when he was holding her in the farmhouse? According to him, in the latest episode of Found, no. As seen in flashbacks, another one of Sir’s students, Stephanie “Annie” Lopez, saw Gabi in the farmhouse and said she’d come back for her. Then, Sir showed Gabi a red ribbon, matching the one in Annie’s hair, and said he stopped her from ruining their life. When Gabi, in the present-day as she keeps Sir chained in her basement, confronts him in “Missing While Indoctrinated,” promising to find where he buried Annie, he insists that he didn’t kill her. Should we believe him? “I don’t know that you should, but speaking with the showrunner, Nkechi Okoro Carroll, I don’...

Found is returning to the scene of a crime (sort of) with the December 5 episode. In “Missing While Indoctrinated,” Gabi (Shanola Hampton) and the team revisit a case from earlier in the season involving child trafficking, and their investigation leads them in a shocking direction. Cases involving kids are tough for them — especially Gabi, considering the year she spent being held in that farmhouse by Sir (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), now in her basement. Also tough right now for one of the team: the idea of letting go of the bus station for Margaret (Kelli Williams), where she last saw her son before he went missing 13 years ago. Below, Williams previews this week’s episode, discusses Margaret’s trauma and her family, and speculates about her character’s reaction if she found out what Gabi’s hiding. NBC is sticking with Found and The Irrational.
The network has renewed both first-year dramas — one of just a handful of original scripted series to air on a broadcast network this fall — for second seasons. Both shows were developed off-cycle at NBC and thus had a full complement of episodes in the can before strikes by writers and actors led to dozens of productions shutting down in the summer and early fall.
The two series have also performed solidly for NBC: The Irrational, starring Jesse L. Martin, is averaging 6.34 million viewers per episode after seven days of linear viewing, while the Shanola Hampton-led Found clocks in at 5.18 million viewers (not including streaming for either show). They are also the top two broadcast series of the season so far among Black viewers, with Found ranking first.

NBC is making some early renewals.
The network has renewed both of its first-year drama series, Found and The Irrational for second seasons.
The fact that both shows had episodes filmed prior to the start of the broadcast season was a boon for NBC, allowing it to air new scripted series as many of its rivals pivoted to reality series and licensed programming as a result of the dual strikes.
The Irrational has aired seven episodes of its first season and has four more to go starting on Monday January 29 at 10pm. It is currently back in production on those episodes.
Found has currently aired nine episodes with two more to air before the end of the year. It will return on January 9 for its final two episodes of the season and has already finished production on those.
Both series have performed well for NBC as well as Peacock; Found...
