The first series of psychological drama The Responder held a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing. Half of the first series was directed by Philip Barantini, who went on to direct the brilliant Boiling Point.
Set and filmed in Liverpool, it followed Chris Carter, an inspector, as he gets demoted and begins working the night shift. The drama interspersed scenes of Chris tackling various crimes...

Be nice to waiters. That’s the first lesson of new four-part BBC One drama Boiling Point. Be nice to waiters not only because it’s nice to be nice, but because however calm and smiling they emerge from behind those flapping kitchen doors, inside blows a hurricane. Personal dramas and business pressures, dodgy colleagues, nightmare customers, shifts that end at midnight and leave you buzzing with adrenaline that needs to go somewhere… it’s the perfect cocktail for dysfunction and conflict. Handily, that in turn is the perfect cocktail for TV drama, as we know from rightly critically acclaimed US series The Bear (watch that and watch this too; there’s plenty of room for both.)
Boiling Point’s second lesson is just to let this creative team get on with it. Give them a second series with the full six episodes immediately, please, because they clearly know what they’re doing.

Chefs are famously short tempered and Philip Barantini’s 2020 potboiler will help you to understand why, as it follows – purportedly in a single take – the frantic behind-the-scenes action in a high end restaurant which is overbooked, understaffed and all out of time for apologies. With an unhappy inspector sneaking around the kitchen and an important food critic amongst the diners – accompanied by a famous TV cook who just happens to be the head chef’s old mentor – there is no room for anything to go wrong. Stephen Graham is on fine form in the lead, striking a careful balance between charisma and necessary aggression, actor and character both fully focused throughout. The effect is like watching a car chase where you know the stunts are all being done for real.

Boiling Point director Philip Barantini brings more clammy tension to a tale of a young man who becomes the target of a witch-hunt after a London bombing
For all of the breathless acclaim directed at Chicago-set kitchen drama The Bear, it was Philip Barantini’s Dalston-set equivalent Boiling Point from a year before that truly captured the heat and horror of working in a restaurant. Filmed in one continuous take, it was both technical triumph and masterclass in high-wire suspense, fumbling perhaps in its final overblown moments, but involving enough that by the end, you felt as exhausted as a pot washer ending a busy shift.
Before Barantini’s much-anticipated sequel series comes to the BBC later this year, he’s crafted a thriller of much higher stakes, an almost unbearably tense film about the terror of being subjected to a social media witch-hunt. Accused is a smartphone spin on...

Director Phil Barantini has become one of my go-to directors in terms of pure quality homegrown filmmaking. From my introduction to his work with Craig Fairbrass driven feature Villian, the short movie Seconds Out and the outrageously brilliant Stephen Graham powerhouse one shot, Boiling Point, I’m beginning to get the feeling we can group this man with some of our favourite British directors.
Whether we are spending time with an ageing con fresh out of prison, an alcoholic head chef on the busiest night of the year or Tim from The Office working the streets of Liverpool, we are sucked into these worlds because the stories are real, the performances are raw and a lot of the time they feel like they are happening right outside your front door.

Have you seen Boiling Point (2021)? The movie was shot in a 90-minutes continuous take (=real single shot) utilizing the Sony Venice Rialto, by the young (23) cinematographer Matthew Lewis. Furthermore, this outstanding 90-minutes single take was shot inside a crowded restaurant. This fact elevates the complexity even further. Boiling Point constitutes a mandatory reference for filmmakers.

It’s been two years since the chaotic events of Boiling Point, actor-turned-director Philip Barantini’s audacious one-shot kitchen drama set over one hectic night in a busy, upmarket London restaurant and starring Stephen Graham as Andy Jones, a stressed-out head chef on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
The film — Barantini’s debut feature (and based on his own experiences in the hospitality industry) — was a major success, landing four BAFTA nominations (including Graham’s first on the film side) and winning four of its 11 British Independent Film Award nominations.
While the natural response to such a hit would be to make a follow up, Boiling Point will instead be returning on the small screen, BBC Studios in 2022 announcing a new five-part series that will pick up eight months on from the film’s momentous night. Due to land on the BBC later this year (BBC Studios is shopping...

In ITV’s Malpractice, (the title is a bit of a giveaway), a dedicated but stressed-out emergency doctor, Lucy Edwards (Niamh Algar), finds herself accused of negligence following the death of a young drug overdose victim, Edith Owusu. Edith’s treatment is temporarily sidelined when a blood-spattered kid and an armed man bust into A&e, and Lucy has to make split-second decisions about priorities. There’s not enough beds, and, as the duty nurse asks her, who’s she going to give the space to – the child bleeding to death, or the “junkie”, now stabilised? In this fast-cut busy opening sequence, Lucy delegates the routine task of looking after the overdosed girl to a fairly incompetent but devious junior (Priyanka Patel as Dr Ramya Morgan). We see that it is she, not Lucy, who gets mixed up about Edith’s dosages, with lethal results; but Dr Morgan is a more...

In 2013, the body of a college student was found floating in the Seekonk River. The man was later identified as Sunil Tripathi, a Brown University undergraduate who had recently been misidentified as one of the Boston Marathon Bombers by users on Reddit. In the aftermath of Tripathi’s death, many worried that social media had become a danger to due process. That toxicity is a wonderful jumping-off point for director Philip Barantini and screenwriters Barnaby Boulton and James Cummings for their new thriller, “Accused.”

Exclusive: The BBC’s small screen Boiling Point sequel has found a sous chef. Walking Dead star Steven Ogg will play Nick in the upcoming drama, which will pick the story up six months after the conclusion of the BAFTA-nominated Stephen Graham-starring indie pic.
Ogg is best known for playing Simon in a number of seasons of AMC’s The Walking Dead. He was Rebus in HBO’s Westworld, Sobchak in another AMC hit, Better Call Saul, and most recently featured in Will Smith-starring Apple TV+ movie Emancipation.
Ogg’s signing rounds out main cast for the five-parter from Philip Barantini, which is being produced by Matriarch Productions, Ascendant Fox and Made Up Productions.
Sous chef Nick will join Carly’s (Vinette Robinson) fictional restaurant midway through the season, with Carly still featuring in the show as head chef of her own restaurant after she leaves Graham’s establishment.

Kitchen nightmares are all the rage these days – last year’s drama The Bear brought emotion and tender characterisation to the stressful setting of a deep-in-the-hole Chicago sandwich shop, while one-take-for-real movie Boiling Point got audiences hooked with its simmering tension and immersive shooting approach. And it’s been in the works for a little while now that Boiling Point is spinning onto the small screen in a BBC series that won’t continue the one-shot set-up, but will take viewers back into hell’s kitchen – and explore what happens next for Stephen Graham’s chaotic cook Andy.
The BBC has now confirmed that shooting on the series is underway – it’ll be a five-part drama with episodes running at one hour each. And while Graham’s Sous Chef Carly who’ll be at the centre of the show, now running her own restaurant with much of Andy’s team...

Filming has begun in Manchester, U.K., on “Boiling Point,” the five-part BBC series that follows on from the award-winning film of the same name.

As the pressure mounts to keep the restaurant full, Carly begins to feel the magnitude of responsibility that comes with running her own place.

High-stress kitchen dramas are having something of a moment. Last month, The Bear had us all dreaming of the perfect doughnut, yelling ‘Behind!’, and wondering, just how often do chefs end up stabbed in the butt at work? And earlier this year, national treasure Stephen Graham blew audiences away with his intense performance as chef-on-the-edge Andy Jones in Philip Barantini’s one-take, restaurant-set, Boiling Point. The good news is, a second course is coming – we’ll return to the Bpcu (Boiling Point Cinematic Universe) in a new five-part BBC series. The surprising news is, Graham is set to reprise his role, even after the last shot of the movie left his character presumed dead. So just how is Andy going to be coming back?
“Well, we wrote it as a heart attack. In our minds, he lived,” Barantini explains to Empire, in our new world-exclusive Indiana Jones issue. “It was definitely left open to interpretation.

The British drama Boiling Point will be getting a new TV series over at the BBC that will be picking up after the conclusion of the film. The Hollywood Reporter shares the news that the continuation will be a five-part drama that will take place six months after the film. Boiling Point garnered acclaim for the film’s star, Stephen Graham, with his first BAFTA nomination. The film would get nominated for a number of awards as well.
The movie showcased an evening at a restaurant that was presented in one shot a la Birdman. THR reports that the new series, which will not be in one shot, “will pick up six months on from where the film left off, with sous chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) now head chef at her own restaurant, and many of the feature’s original cast – including Graham as Andy and Hannah Walters as Emily — reprising their roles alongside her.

Picking up six months from where the film left off, the five-part series will see Sous Chef Carly (Vinette Robinson) as Head Chef at her own restaurant, with many of the film’s original cast reprising their roles alongside her, including Graham as Andy and Hannah Walters as Emily. The film’s co-writers, James Cummings and Philip Barantini, will reunite, with Cummings writing and Barantini directing the first two episodes. First released in 2021, the film revolved around a fast-paced kitchen at a busy London restaurant. The action was set over the course of one night and used a one-shot technique for the entire feature, heightening the stress and intensity. However, Graham and Walters have confirmed the series won’t be using the same process.
