A haunting lead performance from Marco Pigossi, steeped in melancholy and raw pain but also in moments of openness, optimism and even joy, helps make High Tide an affecting portrait of untethered gay men seeking meaningful connections. Writer-director Marco Calvani’s sensitively observed first feature draws parallels between the isolation of an undocumented Brazilian, nearing the end of his visa and disinclined to return home, and that of a Black American, secure in his tight friendship circle but very much aware he’s the minority in a predominantly white queer tourist mecca — and in the country at large.
About that setting — for anyone who loves Provincetown, this film and its enveloping sense of place will evoke fond associations with the historic fishing village and art colony on the tip of Cape Cod.

The main draw on the surface of writer-director Marco Calvani’s lovely if overly dramatic feature debut is the jaw-dislocating physical beauty of its star. That might sound crass, but “High Tide” is a movie that dares you not to be obsessed with — and attracted to — its leading man. Actor Marco Pigossi, Calvani’s real-life partners, enters the first frame as if sculpted out of marble, or butter even, stripping down to nothing and rushing into the sea off a desolate nude beach along Provincetown, Massachusetts, in a spin of anguish.
The cold open is a bookend “High Tide” will return to at its climax. It’s also a chilly plunge into a baptismal, hoped-for catharsis for Lourenço (Pigossi), a Brazilian immigrant with an expiring tourist visa reeling from a sudden breakup and now stuck in the United States, hoping to stay there. Ask any Trekkie, and they'll happily describe the arc of the three "Star Trek" shows that came to ascend in the 1990s. In the cases of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager," the shows started on their rockiest, least interesting seasons as they found their footing. All three shows showed growth during their second seasons but were still staggering to their feet. For the third, fourth, and fifth seasons, the shows had hit their stride, turning out the most interesting stories and exploring exciting new arcs. The sixth and seventh seasons, meanwhile, showed signs of fatigue, and the final episodes of each show proved to be a little rocky.
As of this writing, no "Star Trek" show has lasted as long as those three. "Star Trek: Discovery" will end after its fifth season next year, and no one was more sharply aware...

Marcia Cross, Bryan Batt and Ron Canada starred in the opening night of the Off-Broadway play, Pay the Writer. The first performance of the comedy-drama was held in benefit of the Writers Guild of America, which is currently on strike.
Producer Sandy Marshall said the actors wanted to show support for the writers’ union because “without their members, there would be no stories to experience and no escape from the difficulties of the human experience that are often cast upon us. Simply, the artist must support the art.”
The plot of Pay the Writer follows literary agent Bruston Fischer (Batt) and his complex friendships with his most successful client, Cyrus Holt (Canada), and Holt’s ex-wife Lana (Cross). Fischer is a gay man who faces “social persecution” while trying to succeed in his publishing career while Holt is a black writer attempting to get noticed.

This time he toys with the "Good Samaritan" concept: when a young woman overcoming her traumatic past is among several witnesses who see a man fatally assaulted and don't intervene, they find themselves targeted by someone, or something, out for revenge. Or is there something more going on? Kourtney Bell stars as Caitlin, along with Bryan Batt, Will Stout, Skyler Hart, Jeremy Holm, Jaqueline Fleming, Amanda Grace Benitez, Damon Lipari, and Han Soto. At first glance, this seems like I Know What You Did Last Summer meets Final Destination, with a few extra intriguing supernatural twists. Take a look.

Together, Vikings and Game of Thrones are two of the most popular television series ever made and it’s easy to understand why based on their premises alone. One tells the story of a clan of Nordic warriors, the other of the political intrigue brewing between a group of vindictive royal families.
Now, the best of both series may be coming together as Vikings actor Alexander Ludwig will be teaming up with Game of Thrones star Alfie Allen for a Netflix thriller called Night Teeth. And although little is yet known about the film, the inclusion of these two cast members alone is certainly promising.
In case you don’t know exactly who’s who when it comes to these shows – something which is completely understandable considering both Vikings and Game of Thrones feature tons of characters – here’s a little recap. As far as the History Channel series is concerned,...

Who’s up for a road trip? I’m guessing most folks are, after being cooped up for much of this year. Well, since things aren’t quite back to normal, perhaps a cinematic one would fill the bill. Maybe a state to state jaunt would be in order, with a somewhat shady duo behind the wheel ala’ Smokey And The Bandit or Thelma And Louise, perhaps just indulging in an occasional “dine ‘n’ dash” or a “fill-up and flee”. Oh, and aside from the authorities, some roughnecks are on your trail. That’s the elements of the new comic crime caper Easy Does It. But with these dimwits churning up dust, nothing is ever easy (especially for the audience).

Mad Men's return to steaming later this month will include a disclaimer about the show's use of blackface.
On Wednesday, July 15, all seven seasons of Mad Men will stream for free, with commercials, on the Amazon-owned IMDb TV.
Variety is reporting that an episode of Mad Men Season 3, titled “My Old Kentucky Home” will have a disclaimer at the top of the episode.
The aim of the message is to offer context to viewers about a scene in which John Slattery’s Roger sings the anti-slavery ballad “My Old Kentucky Home, Good-Night” while wearing blackface.
“This episode contains disturbing images related to race in America. One of the characters is shown in blackface as part of an episode that shows how commonplace racism was in America in 1963," Variety reveals the disclaimer will say.

Two best buds. An accidental hostage. One crazy shot at running down the American dream. Gravitas has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie crime comedy titled Easy Does It, which is debuting next month. The filmmaking team is comprised of 100% Louisiana residents - most of whom are University of New Orleans film alums. Two best friends and their accidental hostage careen across the 1970s American South on a treasure hunt turned crime spree. The film's cast features Bryan Batt, Dwight Henry, Ben Matheny, Matthew Paul Martinez, Susan Gordon, and Linda Hamilton as "The King"; with voice roles from John Goodman and Harry Shearer. And featuring original music from Patrick Carney of The Black Keys. At least they made the film look like it's from the 70s. Because it seems a bit out-of-date already. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Will Addison's Easy Does It, direct from YouTube...

Stars: Lauren Canny, Bryan Batt, Nora-Jane Noone, Cooper Andrews, Pollyanna McIntosh, John Spud McConnell, Geraldine Singer, Maddie Nichols, Mackenzie Michelle Graham, Jeff Pope, Eugenie Bonderant, Sabrina Gennarino, Thomas Francis Murphy | Written and Directed by Pollyanna McIntosh
The debut feature from actor-turned-writer-director Pollyanna McIntosh (The Walking Dead), Darlin’ is a stand-alone sequel to Lucky McKee’s visceral 2011 horror The Woman, in which McIntosh starred as an imprisoned feral woman wreaking hell on her captors. McIntosh reprises the role here, but her film has both a different focus and a different sensibility, skilfully blending coming-of-age and horror tropes to entertaining effect.
The film begins with the still-feral, nature-dwelling Woman (McIntosh) bringing an equally feral young woman – Darlin’, played by Lauren Canny and so named for the bracelet around her wrist – to the door of a hospital and leaving her there, for reasons that will eventually become clear. Darlin’ can’t speak and behaves like a wild animal,...

Thanks to a Kickstarter campaign that raised over $140,000 from fans, Eastsiders, a co-production with Wolfe Video, will be back with a fourth season that picks up with the Silver Lake gang one year later. Executive produced by Williamson and his husband John Halbach, who also star, the six-episode Season 4 tackles heavy, adult-world questions like how do two human beings make love last? What does commitment really look like in a long-term relationship? And what unique challenges does a “gay marriage” present?
Cal (Williamson) and Thom (Van Hansis) are back home from Season 3’s cross-country road trip, still a couple but wondering if they are really just best friends with benefits. "You have now heard... a wild child came to us." Dark Sky Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Darlin', the feature directorial debut of Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh. The film is actually a sequel to the cult horror The Woman (2011), which starred Pollyanna McIntosh as a feral woman. She jumped on board and decide to write & direct the sequel, and star in it, some 8 years later. This one stars Lauryn Canny as another young feral woman found and sent to a Catholic hospital. Once there she undergoes a process of rehabilitation in an attempt to tame her savage behavior. But then her mother shows up to take her home and things get bloody. The cast includes Bryan Batt, Nora-Jane Noone, Cooper Andrews, Eugenie Bondurant, Peyton Wich, and Mackenzie Graham. This looks intensely grungy and grimy and brutal, not sure if it's going to be...

It was in 2011 when horror fans were introduced to Lucky McKee’s The Woman, with Pollyanna McIntosh taking on the eponymous character. Now, eight years later, McIntosh is stepping into a number of roles for Darlin’ (you can read my review Here), including writer, director, and co-star. The story in this sequel picks up with The Woman years after we last saw her, where she’s spent her days playing caregiver to a young woman named Darlin’ (Lauryn Canny). She leaves the teen at a hospital, and because the staff there is ill-equipped to deal with her ferociously feral demeanor, Darlin’ begins to get reintegrated into the world, courtesy of a corrupt Bishop (Bryan Batt) who takes her in and wants to utilize the girl as his own pet project, as a means of showing the value of his all-female orphanage to his superiors in the church.

Though his books were seldom issued by major publishing houses, recently deceased author Jack Ketchum has become one of the big screen’s more frequently adapted U.S. novelists. “Darlin’” isn’t based on a Ketchum tome, per se, but it does have a through line to his work: It’s a sequel to Lucky McKee’s 2011 “The Woman,” which followed Andrew van den Houten’s 2009 “Offspring,” whose print source was a sequel to Ketcham’s 1980 debut novel “Off Season.” Ketchum earned writing credits on both films, and “Off Season” was the start of a series about a cannibalistic clan in the woods of rural Maine. At the end of “The Woman,” the titular feral captive of a “civilized” family kills her keepers and returns to the wilderness, the family’s children in tow.

With the 2019 SXSW Film Festival still in full swing this week, here’s a look at three of the titles that have recently debuted at the festival as part of the Midnighters programming slate: Darlin’ from Pollyanna McIntosh, Richard Bates, Jr.’s Tone-Deaf, and Body at Brighton Rock, directed by Roxanne Benjamin.
Darlin’: Pollyanna McIntosh has been a steadfast fixture on the indie genre scene for years now, and has been a great addition to the cast of The Walking Dead as well, so it was great to see her taking on both the writing and directorial reins for Darlin’, the follow-up story to Lucky McKee’s The Woman (in which McIntosh portrayed the film’s titular character).
