For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

"I think between the two of us, we can figure out what happened to him quicker than the cops." Mpca has unveiled an official trailer for Double Life, a mystery thriller made by Canadian filmmaker Martin Wood. Another of these forgettable films that is just being quickly dumped on VOD as more mindless content to consume. The film follows a widow who finds out from her late husband's mistress that his death was not an accident. The two women will form an unlikely alliance to uncover the truth behind his murder and unmask the man they both loved. Of course they're going to end up deeply in trouble way over their heads. Double Life stars Javicia Leslie, Pascale Hutton, Vincent Gale, John Cassini, Aaron Douglas, and Niall Matter. Everything about this looks obvious and cliche, and the twist probably isn't going to be memorable. // Continue Reading ›...

"Just give me 24 hours to show you what we do here." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for an odd romantic comedy titled Operation Christmas Drop, from Canadian TV director Martin Wood. While gathering evidence as a congressional aide to support closing a tropical U.S. Air Force base, a by-the-book congressional aide warms to its big-hearted captain. The pilot's pet project — Operation: Christmas Drop, a genuine, decades-old tradition where gifts and supplies are parachuted to residents of remote neighboring islands — has lawmakers wondering if his unit has too much spare energy. But of course - surprise! It's not such a bad thing after all. This stars Kat Graham, Alexander Ludwig, Aaron Douglas, and Virginia Madsen. It looks so extremely cheesy it's hard to watch, and it really looks like the Pentagon's propaganda department wrote the script. It's sweet, sure, but so obvious and expected, we all know how it's going to end.

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 12
“Am I the only one staring at three blank pages?”
For such an exposition heavy episode, “Three Pages” still finds plenty of time to move the core Van Helsing tale forward, and at the same time clearly demonstrate the show’s continued willingness to provide real stakes for the characters no matter how important they seem to be to the overall narrative. Penned by showrunner Jonathan Lloyd Walker and Gorrman Lee, season four’s penultimate chapter skillfully sets up what promises to be a blockbuster season finale and leaves ample room for a continuation of Vanessa Van Helsing’s hero’s journey.

With a pair of short films and a long-list of TV credits to his name, writer/director Nicholas Treeshin makes his feature film debut with Thunderbird. Part mystery and part supernatural thriller, the film stars Colten Wilke as Will Brook, a reclusive fisherman who returns home to help in the search for his missing sister.
Will’s return isn’t an easy one. He and his family have a fraught history with the townsfolk and he’s not exactly welcome but Will is determined to help the lead investigator Ivy (Natalie Brown) and local cop Joe Fletcher (Aaron Douglas), solve the mystery of his sister’s disappearance - and perhaps also find her in the process.
Treeshin’s experience behind the camera is clearly on display in Thunderbird.

Van Helsing Season 4 Episode 11
“You pathetic old hags.”
It’s reasonable to think the revelation of a relatively intact United States government and military might be the most compelling reveal to emerge from the latest episode of Van Helsing. Nope. “All Apologies” throws a little shapeshifting into the mix, and as long as Sgt. Miller and Julius can control the growing Van Helsing army, there may even be a flicker of light at the end of the apocalyptic tunnel.
We receive verification that the inner circle vampires possess shapeshifting abilities, a power that neatly coincides with Hansen’s revised allegiance to the Dark One and her followers. Despite the present concern he exhibits for Violet and Jack, we’ve rightly questioned his motives.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray copy of this film was provided by Lionsgate. Director: Bryan Bertino. Writer: Bryan Bertino. Cast: Zoe Kazan, Ella Ballentine and Aaron Douglas. Tagline: "Fear Can Kill You!" The Monster is a creature feature from The Strangers' (2008) director Bryan Bertino. Bertino has admitted that he likes writing "dark dramas" and The Monster is a blend of drama with horror. The film's central plot involves a mother and daughter road trip. But, this trip crosses the lair of a bat-like monstrosity. The mother-daughter relationship is a strange one, with the younger Lizzy (Ella Ballentine) parenting the not much older Kathy (Zoe Kazan). There is no meta-level here as stated by the director. Instead, this is a "monster movie." And, this is an enjoyable creature feature, that will draw many horror viewers into the dark abyss. Much of the film is told via a backstory. The backstories show...

Sometimes the term “parental instinct” can be a bit of a misnomer. It doesn’t come naturally to everyone. Matter of fact, some are really, really bad at it. For those that might lack a proficient level of parental swagger, another strategy might be to take the cool parent approach. Low on discipline and drunk on fun.
Unfortunately for Lizzy, her mom, Kathy is just plain drunk. Her parents were probably pretty young when she was born, and both have moved on from one another. Lizzy is staying with her Mom and an intermittent boyfriend. Between the three of them, Lizzy is the most responsible, and definitely the most put upon. There are no shortages of talented young actresses who aren’t getting their due in Hollywood. We know that. For my money though, no one is as underrated and deserving of acclaim as Zoe Kazan. She has been doing really compelling work for years now, but always seems to be stuck somewhat on the periphery of the industry. Simply put, she deserves better. This week, she once again puts forward a top tier performance, this time in the independent horror movie The Monster. Not only is the film good, she’s positively incredible. This is one of the best performances I’ve seen all year long. The film is an indie horror tale that’s also as much a character study as anything else. Young mother Kathy (Kazan) has a tough relationship with her daughter Lizzy (Ella Ballentine). Kathy isn’t too responsible and is struggling with addiction. They’re...

Monster movies are tough because there’s a desire to go full bore into cat and mouse chaos or metaphorical symbolism. Things get muddled when both are attempted at once without the correct balance. I’m not saying picking one or the other always spells success — writer/director Bryan Bertino‘s debut The Strangers ultimately failed at mysterious chaos despite some effective scares — but it does often allow a filmmaker the opportunity to focus and reinforce his/her idea with less chance of getting distracted. Bertino’s third film The Monster, however, suffers the same fate within the other camp. This one utilizes metaphor and flashback to depict a volatile mother/daughter relationship wherein the “monster” proves an embodiment of their worst selves. Unfortunately, this idea is never dug into further than its surface conceit.
I’m not kidding when I say volatile either. At times the hatred Kathy (Zoe Kazan...

"Dogs don't got teeth like this." A24 has finally unveiled a trailer for the horror thriller The Monster, the latest feature from Bryan Bertino, the director behind the 2008 hit The Strangers. The Monster is indeed about a creepy monster, despite the tendency for movies like this to trick you into thinking "the monster" is just some deranged human living in the woods. Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine play mother-daughter in the film. When their car breaks down in the middle of the woods, things get increasingly creepy. The cast includes Scott Speedman, Aaron Douglas, Christine Ebadi and Chris Webb as the "monster". This seems like a very quiet release, with the film being dumped without much buzz, but who knows. "We love the idea that there was a villain out there that they knew about, but they just haven’t bothered to tell the audience about yet. All Barry wants to do is get faster, because if he can get faster, he can take on 'Zoom'. He’s...

A surprising addition has been made to the midseason premiere of The Flash, as it has been revealed today that Battlestar Galactica alum Aaron Douglas will play The Turtle, a relatively little known DC Comics villain.
There have been a couple of different versions over the years, and the first was introduced as a foe to the Jay Garrick version of The Flash in the 1940s. A later iteration targeted Barry Allen and developed devices which could slow down the Fastest Man Alive. The small screen Turtle sounds like a combination of both, as he’ll be a metahuman who can actually slow down time itself.
Here’s what The Flash executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed about this addition to the series:
“In a surprisingly funny twist, Cisco [Carlos Valdes] has actually been hunting The Turtle the entire series. To Barry’s surprise, everybody knows about Cisco’s hunt for the great white whale,...

Slowly, but surely, The Turtle is on his way to wreak havoc on Central City! Entertainment Weekly has learned that The CW's hit superhero drama The Flash has cast Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica) as the DC Comics villain The Turtle, a "meta-human who can slow time itself." He'll make his debut and cause trouble for Barry & his friends in the midseason premiere on January 19. Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg teased his arrival and spoke on how the Fastest Man Alive will react to this meta-human his team has known about for quite some time: “In a surprisingly funny twist, Cisco has actually been hunting The Turtle the entire series, To Barry’s surprise, everybody knows about Cisco’s hunt for the great white whale, which is The Turtle; he’s the only one who didn’t know about it. Oh, Dragon Con, how I adore you! Let me count the ways…
They include:
1. The fact that even the airline losing my luggage until 3 a.m. on arrival Thursday feels like something I can roll with, since, after all, the minute I walk in I find old friends (and new) to greet me and take my mind off of things – and to commiserate, and hope with me that all of my toiletries and hand-made costume items are not lost forever in the bowels of Reagan National. Thankfully they weren’t. 2. The costumes, oh the costumes. Including my own! This year, a Harley Quinn / Jake the Dog mash-up (with hand-painted grenades, and my partner-in-crime Poison Ivy / Princess Bubblegum and bonus convertible-to-party-time skirt); Pinky from Pinky & the Brain (with my friend Chicken Boo, who is definitely not a chicken); and Helena from Orphan Black (complete with bloody fortune-teller). “The fight isn’t over ’til it’s over,” Colonel Weaver reassured members of the 2nd Mass on more than one occasion. Now it really is over: “Falling Skies” aired the finale of its fifth and final season tonight on TNT. Warning: Spoilers Ahead for “Reborn,” the series finale of “Falling Skies.” Tonight’s finale concluded the tale that began with a ragtag team of alien invasion survivors and ended with that same group of survivors becoming heroes, leading the fight to claim back their home, Planet Earth. Tom Mason and co. have battled all manner of extraterrestrial creatures, gruesome weapons that manipulated once-loyal members of the 2nd Mass to turn on their own, and fellow humans (non-alien-manipulated ones) who were plenty troublesome in their own selfish or fearful agendas, as if a powerful alien threat weren’t trouble enough. After the final push brings the 2nd Mass to Washington,...

Had Freaks And Geeks, Caprica and more not been cancelled, here’s what their showrunners had planned for their futures. Spoilers…
Warning: major spoilers for all shows listed below.
Closure. It’s an important psychological concept. Without closure, it’s difficult to grieve, move on, make peace and nurture your inner Ewok or whatever it is the self-help books tell us. When a TV show is cancelled before its story has been fully told, the result is an unscratchable itch.
That itch can have positive side effects. The creativity for instance, of fanfic and fan art, and the tenacity and camaraderie of doggedly pursued fan campaigns. The less positive side though is, well, not so pretty. Sleepless nights, anxiety at work, a tendency to grasp total strangers by the shoulders with both hands, hot stress-tears streaming down your cheeks, and cry “So did Lois and Clark raise that baby or what?...

Having himself played a hybrid of a vampire and a werewolf in the Underworld films, Scott Speedman is well placed to join the cast of There Are Monsters. Bryan Bertino (The Strangers) is directing, and has also signed up Aaron Douglas, Zoe Kazan and Ella Ballentine for the cast.Details so far are sketchy, but the plot of the film centres on "a mother and daughter trapped and tormented by a ruthless creature". It's probably safe to assume that Kazan and Ballentine are, respectively, the mother and daughter. But all we know about Speedman and Douglas are that their characters are called Roy and Jesse. Do either of those sound like the name of a ruthless creature?Bertino brought us the impressive The Strangers in 2008, but this is only the second time he's directed since, following Mockingbird, which went straight to DVD here in the UK. He wrote an interesting-sounding...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Speedman (Underworld), Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica) and Ella Ballentine (The Captive) will co-star in Bertino's There Are Monsters, which is currently in production. The trio join a cast that includes Zoe Kazan (Ruby Sparks).
Elisabeth Moss was at one time lined up to star in There Are Monsters, but she's no longer involved in Bertino's latest, which "focuses on a mother and daughter who are trapped and tormented by a ruthless creature." The Strain focuses on only the critical plots this week and is much improved for it. Here's Billy's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 For Services Rendered
Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I still think that The Strain is a long way short of being a good TV show. But, For Services Rendered was markedly more entertaining than what passed for TV last week.
Forgetting plenty of subplots (Vasily, Boliva, Ephraim’s wife and son) the episode concentrates on just a few critical threads. The opening sequence introduces Joan's husband, played by Aaron Douglas (Battlestar Galactica), a recognisable face that you might reasonably assume might stick around for an episode or two. Nah.
There’s a special stupidity field that encompasses Joan Luss’s neighbourhood that stops people following the simplest of instructions, or having any common sense whatsoever. It could be argued that NY taxi drivers won't follow any instructions,...

Falling Skies season 4 continues to fall into the 'good, but not great' category. Here's Ron's review of Mind Wars...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
4.5 Mind Wars
In life, there are things you have to do and there are things you must do. The difference between the two can be subtle on the surface, but to the person making the decision, the gulf is incalculably vast and painful to bridge. With things you must do, it's simply a matter of survival. With things you have to do, it's a matter of duty, honour, and protecting those you care about. Revenge, as it turns out, is neither of these things, and it's the duty of all survivors in the Falling Skies universe to learn the difference and act accordingly, because that's what separates those who survive by any means necessary from those who survive with a little bit of basic human dignity.

Here at PopWatch, we’re reminiscing about the pop culture moments that we still can’t get over — no matter how much time has passed.
“How many of us ended up with the people we wanted to be with? Got stuck with the best of limited options. And why? Because the ones we really want, that we’ve really loved, are dead, dying, turned out to be Cylons and they didn’t know it.”
So says Chief Galen Tyrol (Aaron Douglas) as he mourns his wife’s death. But he isn’t talking about losing his wife — he’s talking...

The Killing is back tonight at 8/7c on AMC with a few familiar faces appearing in the two-hour season premiere, "The Jungle"/"That You Fear The Most."
Aaron Douglas and Ryan Robbins will be recurring this season, and Ben Cotton will make an appearance in at least one episode.
Here is the setup, from Alan Sepinwall's review:
The new season picks up a little over a year after the last one concluded with the election, the arrest of Aunt Terry, and Mireille Enos' over-invested cop Sarah Linden walking away from Holder and the job. Holder is climbing the ladder at the Seattle Pd with the advice of new partner Carl Reddick (Gregg Henry) when he catches the murder of a teenage prostitute who was killed in a manner very similar to a case that Linden worked years before with her old partner James Skinner (Elias Koteas). Linden and Skinner arrested their victim's husband,...

Review Sarah Dobbs 23 Apr 2013 - 06:58
There's no nice way of saying this, Netflix original horror series Hemlock Grove is er, not very good at all. Here's Sarah's review...
Thanks to ambitious, complex shows like The Wire, Mad Men, and The Sopranos, the way we watch TV has changed. One episode a week often doesn’t seem like enough; we’d rather jump straight into a boxset, tearing through an entire season in a weekend. Modern TV is designed to be devoured.
So Hemlock Grove should be a feast, especially because all thirteen episodes were released at once, and all you have to do is press play on the first one to get Netflix to feed you all thirteen in a row, with teasing little twenty-second countdowns in between. Unfortunately, even if you manage to choke down the first episode, it’s unlikely you’ll want to come back for seconds.
