Although a lot of the mutants from Marvel comics did manage to make it to the X-Men project for the screens, not all of them got the true recognition they deserved, with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine being a major exception.
But while the others were simply sidelined, some of them were actually told that they had the potential to get their own solo movie for their respective mutant.

One of these was The Blob, who was played by Kevin Durand in 2009’s Origins: Wolverine. As the actor revealed, he was promised a solo movie for his character, with a plotline that basically hinged on fat-shaming because of the mutant’s characteristics.
However, in a disappointing turn of events, that promise never really managed to pan out, let alone make it to the screens.

The movie by Wes Ball, starring Freya Allan and Owen Teague, has stunning visuals like the other movies in this franchise. Before this reboot, in 2001, Tim Burton made a remake of the Og Planet of the Apes movie, but it was not that successful. 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes brought about a resounding change in the franchise’s universe and appeared to mark an end to the saga. However, the 2022 Wes Ball directorial, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has expanded the lore further ahead by as much as three centuries after the end of its previous installment, and with a new working order that has apes as the dominant species on the planet and humans reduced to a feral state.

At a time when the flick is surging ahead at the global box office with the likes of Freya Allan spearheading its cast, it also has not forgotten its roots. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted numerous connections between the current movie’s central characters and Caesar, the ape from the first 2011 movie who kick-started the lore in the first place.

2024 is half over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 10 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.
Late Night with the Devil (AMC+ & Prime Video Add-On)

Like most, I was absolutely blown away by Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga this weekend. Chris Bumbray perfectly sums up why the film is a great entry into the Mad Max franchise Here. It may have been the trailer playing before the most number of movies in 2024. It was everywhere. Yet it’s hard to watch the film and come away feeling like I saw something completely brand new when the marketing already spoiled so much of it.
*spoilers for Furiosa going forward. Read at your own risk*
I need to get it out of the way right off the bat that I loved Furiosa. It’s a brilliant epic that features Chris Hemsworth’s best performance to date and proves why Anya Taylor Joy is believable in any role. The brilliance of Furiosa cannot be understated both in its technical achievements and in its narrative. And my criticisms...

Everyone knows the mongoose is one of nature’s slipperiest animals. Not only can they run at 20 mph, but they’re also resistant to snake venom! If honey badgers and mongooses ever teamed up, we’d be in big trouble. Why all this talk about fast-moving mammals? One of Hollywood’s most devious action stars, Liam Neeson, will star in a cross-country car chase movie, Mongoose, for Amazon. See, it all makes sense.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, was released earlier this month and is having a splendid time at the box office as well as among critics. The Planet of the Apes franchise has moved forward in time with some new characters. But at the same time, it has managed to keep the nostalgia of the spirit from its previous iterations.

[This story contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.]
Kevin Durand is all smiles right now. The Thunder Bay native doesn’t have the energy of an actor who’s nearly three decades into their career. If you didn’t know any better, his enthusiasm would lead you to believe that he’s a wide-eyed and bushy-tailed newcomer. With recent projects like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Abigail and the upcoming reboot of The Naked Gun, it’s understandable why Durand is savoring this moment that harks back to when Lost introduced his unforgiving mercenary Martin Keamy in season four (2008).
With Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes outperforming opening weekend box office expectations at $58.4 million, the long-term outlook for the sci-fi franchise is rather sunny right now, and despite his cliff-falling ending, Durand is not ruling out a return for his baddie, Proximus Caesar.

When 20th Century Fox began production on the first "Planet of the Apes" film, they enlisted special effects makeup artist John Chambers to help transform actors like Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter, Maurice Evans, and James Whitmore into anthropomorphic apes. Chambers was already famous for having perfected Spock's Vulcan ears on "Star Trek," but a society of intelligent apes who were capable of communicating was like something straight out of "The Twilight Zone." Rather than create ape masks, Chambers instead crafted individual prosthetic pieces to be applied in sections, allowing the actors to emote with their own facial muscles -- a technique that revolutionized the art of special effects makeup.
Now, over 50 years later, the intelligent apes have traded practical makeup prosthetics in favor of breathtaking and realistic digital artistry. When it comes to 2011's "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," /Film's Larry Fried declared, "There is simply no...

Apes box office strong!
20th Century Studios/Disney's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is off to a great start at the global box office after exceeding expectations with a $130M+ opening weekend.
Despite positive reviews, the latest Apes adventure received a disappointing "B" CinemaScore, which suggested that audiences may not be quite as taken with the movie as the majority of critics. Even so, Kingdom managed to take $58.5 million in North America and $72.7 million overseas for a worldwide start of $131.2 million.
This puts the film ahead of Sunday’s domestic estimates of $56.5 million to give it the third-best opening of the year to date, as well as the second-best launch of the franchise after Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes back in 2014.
The movie has a reported budget of $160 million.

On May 10, 2024, 20th Century Studios released “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” written by Josh Friedman and directed by Wes Ball. The sequel to 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” is the fourth installment of this reboot franchise and stars Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon and William H. Macy.
Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike. The highly anticipated blockbuster is a hit with critics and audiences alike, with the critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reading, “Carving out a new era for ‘The Planet of the Apes’ with lovable characters and rich visuals, ‘Kingdom’ doesn’t take the crown as best of the franchise but handily justifies its continued reign.

In a new interview with THR, star Freya Allan (Mae) discusses the ending and how the original conclusion played out in far less subtle - and quite a bit darker - fashion.

“It’s not what she wants to do," Allan explains. "But it’s that, or Proximus has all these weapons and humanity is screwed. She’s gone through so much, she’s lost all the people she cares about, which was a large part of how I justified everything that she did,” Allan says. “So...

Spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" follow.
Koba (Toby Kebbell) from "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is the best blockbuster villain of the 2010s. One of Caesar's (Andy Serkis) sapient apes, first introduced in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," Koba was a lab animal in a previous life. The brutal treatment left him scarred (both skin-deep and deeper) and hateful towards humans. In "Dawn," finally in a position to strike back, he attempts to assassinate Caesar so he can lead his misanthropic war.
Koba is much like Magneto, perennial foe of the X-Men, and another figure who believes peace with humanity is impossible because of his past trauma. It's not a one-to-one comparison, though, because Magneto is more noble than Koba. Magneto has done evil, but his goal is the prosperity of mutantkind. For Koba, the violence is the point; he wants humans to suffer,...

If I were living on a planet of the apes after a man-made virus wiped out the majority of humankind and left our simian overlords in charge, I would simply try to get along with everybody. Despite an overall positive reception from both critics and fans, 20th Century Studios' latest Apes movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, has received one of the worst CinemaScores of the franchise.
The Wes Ball-directed sci-fi adventure is now certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 80% (the audience score is also 80%), but has still only managed to secure a disappointing "B" CinemaScore.
For those unfamiliar with this particular system, a B may not sound too bad, but it's rare enough for a major studio blockbuster to fall below an A-, and it also marks the worst CinemaScore of the franchise since Tim Burton's disastrous 2001 remake.
Ultimately, this shouldn't have too much of a negative impact on the film's box office. Cinemagoers do tend to pay some attention to these scores, but not nearly as much as a green splat on Rotten Tomatoes, for example.

Wes Ball had two things going for him in directing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”: His love of the original franchise, which he first watched on TV as a kid in the ’80s, and his admiration for “Avatar,” whose virtual production and performance capture prowess he leveraged with the help of Wētā FX.
“Something I’ve always wanted to do is go play in that ‘Avatar’ style and do it here, where there is no camera, there’s no lights, there’s no set really,” Ball told IndieWire. “And you have to create that in the computer with really talented artists. And I had a great time doing it.”

After seven years and a change in ownership, the Planet of the Apes franchise returns in an all-new setting. Set generations after the previous film, War for the Planet of the Apes, the new Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes movie follows a new protagonist in a world where human civilization is a forgotten memory.
Director Wes Ball takes over from Matt Reeves, who helmed the previous two films. In what is meant to be the start of a possible new trilogy, it will have to fight an uphill battle compared to its predecessors. Does it stay faithful to the source mercurial, or does it veer off course? Let’s find out.

The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is finally here, and both fans and critics have had the opportunity to voice their opinions on the movie and will be able to do it in the upcoming weeks. But, with more fans being able to see the movie, some theories about the characters and their inspirations about them have begun to surface and one of the more popular ones as far as the movie is concerned is the one that the film’s main villain, the ape monarch Proximus Caesar is actually based on controversial businessman Elon Musk.
Many fans have observed similarities between the villain of the film and Musk, leading to many of them believing that Elon Musk was the inspiration behind the character and as it seems, based on what Kevin Durand, the actor who portrayed Proximus Caesar said, it seems that Musk was, indeed, one of the inspirations for the character.

Planet of the Apes franchise is not going to end its run with the fourth film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The producers recently revealed in an interview that the original plan for the franchise was to do nine films. Although many expected the films to drop significantly in quality by this time, the films are surprisingly maintaining a regular good standard. However, fans still believe that aiming for nine films might be stretching the luck of the films.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth installment in the modern Planet of the Apes franchise

Planet of the Apes trilogy, helmed by directors Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves, is well regarded as one of the best trilogies in modern cinema. The new installment to the franchise, directed by The Maze Runner’s Wes Ball, is set several generations after Caesar’s reign. Now, apes are the dominant species and live harmoniously, whilst humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. We follow young ape Noa, who undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and future, under the reign of a new tyrannical ape leader. Successfully managing to pay homage to the trilogy whilst delivering something entirely new and standing on its own two feet, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a worthy continuation of the franchise. The performances are great, the visuals are jaw-dropping and the story, whilst taking its time,...

Apes rule in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” kicking off director Wes Ball’s post-Caesar saga 300 years later. Wētā FX leveraged its tech from the previous “Apes” trilogy and the Oscar-winning “Avatar: The Way of Water” for greater photorealism in their performance capture animation and VFX. This is important because the apes are chattier, and there are more CG action set pieces (33 minutes are entirely digital — a franchise first). It adds up to possibly earning the franchise the VFX Oscar that it’s been denied.
After achieving great on-set facial capture in the rain and snow for director Matt Reeves’ “Dawn” and “War” films, Wētā embraced more expansive environments for “Kingdom” along with more active and expressive apes. In the film, simians have begun developing their own civilization in villages spread throughout the overgrown Pacific Northwest, with decrepit skyscrapers in the distance.

After a seven-year break, the "Planet of the Apes" franchise has finally returned with a new installment, one that takes us much further than seven years into the future. Director Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" takes place centuries after the Caesar trilogy in the overall timeline, with apes now firmly the dominant species on the planet. So yes, there is a new ape villain at the center of the proceedings in the form of Proximus Caesar (played by Kevin Durand). However, the film's real villain was hidden pretty well in the marketing -- even though right there the whole time.

Many generations after the events of the last film, the society left behind means apes now rule, and humans are the sub species. Noa (Owen Teague as a full CGI ape) is part of a tribe who raise birds for hunting and lives in peace. That peace is upended by Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), King of the Coastal Apes, who accumulates power by destroying other tribes and using the human’s old war technology against his species. Wes Ball's "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" isn't a reboot of the beloved franchise, nor is it a direct sequel to the most recent trilogy, but instead a standalone sequel set hundreds of years after the time of Caesar, the evolved patriarchal leader played by Andy Serkis. Caesar in this series differs from the character played by Roddy McDowell in the original, as this version sees apes and humans as unlikely equals rather than inherently viewing the latter as subservient, and even lets fellow ape Koba fall to his death for ruining the chance for apes and humans to have peace.
Humans are being ravaged by the simian flu, a condition that allows the apes to flourish from an evolutionary standpoint but wipes out a majority of humanity. Those that survive due to genetic immunity splinter into small communities,...

Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is not just an ape story like the Caesar-led Apes trilogy of the 2010s. Kingdom is just as much a human story, and Freya Allan’s Mae is the human in that equation. Centuries after Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) death, Mae first crosses paths with Owen Teague’s young chimpanzee, Noa, as she attempts to survive in the wilderness alone. However, she inadvertently leads Proximus Caesar’s (Kevin Durand) coastal clan of hostile apes to Noa’s village, and the communal home of his Eagle Clan is subsequently destroyed, while many of his fellow apes and family members are either slaughtered or abducted.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has started off its domestic box office run with a promising $6.6 million in previews for 20th Century and Disney. Some of that money, or $1.6 million, came from a special fan event mid-week, while $5 million came from regular Thursday evening previews.
Wes Ball directed the event pic, and has drawn praise from critics for taking good care of one of Hollywood’s enduring franchises. The preview number suggests the film should be able to achieve, if not exceed, the $50 million to $55 million opening predicted by tracking. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth title in the rebooted franchise that began with the James Franco-Andy Serkis-starrer Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

This post contains spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
The majority of people currently alive today have never known a world without the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. French author Pierre Boulle first published his novel "La Planète des singes" in 1963, and the world has been fascinated with an alternate future where our own hubris have destroyed humans, and highly intelligent apes are now the dominant species on Earth. "Maze Runner" and future "The Legend of Zelda" director Wes Ball is the latest to sit in the director's chair, delivering "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," the tenth film overall in this legacy series.
The film follows the events of the previous trilogy a few hundred years later, where a young ape named Noa (Owen Teague) sets off on a journey after his clan has been attacked by a rival group under the control of the...

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes continues the “Planet of the Apes” science fiction saga that was rebooted from 1968’s The Planet Of The Apes with Charleton Heston into a trilogy that started with Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. The last two films in that trilogy, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes and War For The Planet Of The Apes, directed by Matt Reeves and starring the great motion-capture actor Andy Serkis as lead ape Caesar, reached soaring, almost Shakespearean, storytelling heights, while also wowing audiences with the realism of its technically advanced motion-capture acting and special effects.

It’s all monkey business at the box office.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the latest film in 20th Century Studios’ primate franchise, will rule over the box office this weekend. It’s already made $6.6 million in previews so far.
The new “Apes” movie is the fourth in the modern reboot franchise and the first since 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes.” “Kingdom” is projected to make between $50 million and $55 million in its opening weekend, which is roughly in line with the three previous entries.
The series’ second movie, 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” holds the opening-weekend record with $72 million ($4.1 million in previews); followed by “War for the Planet of the Apes” with its $56.2 million opening ($5 million in previews); and finally the initial 2011 reboot “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” with a $54.8 million opening ($1.3 million in previews).

This article contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
At the end of Planet of the Apes, the human astronaut who strove to understand the strange, simian-occupied planet made a shocking discovery. Horror overwhelms him as he struggles to make sense of the honored American monument before him, now barely recognizable.
Of course, that description can refer to the twist ending of the 1968 sci-fi classic, in which Charlton Heston falls on his knees at the sight of a decimated Statue of Liberty, realizing that he has been on a post-nuclear Earth the whole time. However, it also describes the less loved 2001 Planet of the Apes, directed by Tim Burton. In that film, Mark Wahlberg’s astronaut makes it back to the past only to find an ape version of the Lincoln Monument.
On a narrative level, the ending of 2001 Apes makes no sense, not even to Burton.
