Morgan Freeman’s presence in movies usually attracts audience, but even his charisma and soothing voice could not save his 1998 action thriller film, Hard Rain. Directed by cinematographer-turned-director Mikael Salomon, the movie emerged as the biggest flop of that year.

Morgan Freeman revealed the most frustrating moment of his career and it also happened to be his career’s biggest regret. Freeman’s career took off with his Oscar-winning film Driving Miss Daisy. Before the role happened, Freeman wanted to play one particular character in a book-based movie and approached Miloš Forman, the director, to convince him to cast him.

The Dark Knight actor didn’t get the job in Forman’s Ragtime. While the film wasn’t Forman’s best, Freeman was touched by the source material and wanted to play the African-American pianist in the film.

Clint Eastwood is one of the leading pioneers of actors and filmmakers who popularized the Western genre and elevated it during his prime. The actor’s collaborations with Sergio Leone on the Dollars trilogy changed Westerns forever. Eastwood carried on the legacy of those who came before him and elevated the genre by taking it into unexplored territory with many of his Westerns.

The Outlaw Josey Wales, High Plains Drifter, Pale Rider, and Unforgiven were four of the Westerns masterpieces Eastwood made. While Sheridan certainly took inspiration from Eastwood, he did not want to copy one trait of his films.

Phobia-ridden and driven by a sense of existential dread a man places an ad in the newspaper: prove the existence of life after death, win thirty thousand dollars. Of the many replies he receives, Miles narrows the applicants down to just three – a scientist, a medium and an entrepreneur.
First and foremost, We Go On is a road movie; a mother and her son, seeking answers. Like a downbeat Mulder and Scully, the sceptic (or flat-out unbeliever) and the agnostic, scrabbling for hope in a world which often terrifies the latter. Such a concept would be nothing without a strong pair of leads, and this it has in spades with Clark Freeman and the always wonderful Annette O’ Toole.

The 2024 Pen America Literary Gala welcomed hundreds of guests inside Manhattan’s Museum of Natural History on Thursday, including several prominent figures from the entertainment industry. Seth Meyers served as emcee for the annual black-tie fundraiser, which recognizes individuals who “celebrate, champion and defend freedom of expression.”
The gala took place following the recent cancellation of the annual Pen America Literary Awards and World Voices Festival. Several Pen-affiliated writers, including nine of those who received nods for the Pen/Jean Stein award for best book, chose to boycott these events in light of the organization’s response to the Israel-Hamas war. Pen America has been under scrutiny as several Pen-affiliated authors have alleged that the free speech and literary organization has favored Israel amidst the war and not properly acknowledged the violence afflicted upon Palestinian writers and journalists.

Millions of people around the world watched King Charles III‘s coronation on May 6, 2023. It was the first time in 70 years that a grand ceremony was held to officially crown Britain’s monarch.
The day had a bit of drama, including stormy weather and the king looking irritated that he and Queen Camilla were forced to wait in their coach at Westminster Abbey until Prince William, the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton), and their children made it to the church. But the monarch had another complaint later that day that he shared with his wife.
Here’s what a lip reader caught the king and queen complaining about as they stood on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Last year’s Miller’s Girl remains one of the most controversial movies of the year, but the controversy surrounding the movie and its content did not help it become a hit. The movie received mixed reviews and was a proper box office bomb despite a relatively small budget ($4 million), failing to earn even $1 million internationally. The movie stars Martin Freeman as a 50-something literature professor, Jonathan Albert Miller, who works in Tennessee and suddenly receives the 18-year-old Cairo Sweet, played by Jenna Ortega, as a new student.
The girl is special, intelligent, and talented, but is also seductive and presents a danger for Miller, who will break all boundaries to be with the girl, possibly ruining his career and his life as well. The movie had an interesting premise, but it seems that the fans did not appreciate it that much.

‘If you didn’t laugh, you’d cry’ isn’t just the correct British response to any exasperating situation, it must also be Tony Schumacher’s screenwriting mantra. His crime drama The Responder would be unwatchably bleak if it wasn’t also so bloody funny.
Series one put response officer Chris Carson (Martin Freeman) through the wringer so thoroughly that it was a wonder he survived. His childhood pal Carl, a small-time drug dealer who’d been paying him for police intel, didn’t, and in a characteristically heroic/risky attempt to help Carl’s widow, Chris gave her the rucksack of stolen cocaine that had kicked off all this mess. Now it’s six months later and guess what? Chris’ problems are far from over.

Miller's Girl, a 2024 drama featuring Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman, may not be based on a book, but it pulls its influences from elsewhere.
Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, Miller's Girl initially came to theaters in January 2024, but it sprung back in conversation with its April 26 debut on Netflix in the U.S.
The drama follows the relationship between a student and teacher which gets dangerously predatorial. The film has caused plenty of uproar in the wake of its release, with some audiences taking issue with the connection between Freeman's educator and Ortega's teenage pupil.

Martin Freeman is speaking out to defend his movie Miller’s Girl amid backlash for the age gap between him and on-screen love interest Jenna Ortega.
The movie follows a talented young writer (Ortega) who embarks on a creative odyssey when her teacher (Freeman) assigns a project that entangles them both in an increasingly complex web. As lines blur and their lives intertwine, professor and protégé must confront their darkest selves while straining to preserve their individual sense of purpose and the things they hold most dear.
The characters, an 18-year-old student and a 49-year-old teacher, have a 31-year age gap. The actors also have the same age gap in real life.
Viewers have expressed outraged at an intimate scene between the actors, but they did work with an intimacy coordinator to make sure everyone was comfortable on set.
Now, Martin is speaking in response to the backlash.

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega briefly found themselves subjected to some online backlash in January when they co-starred in “Miller’s Girl,” Jade Halley Bartlett’s film about an 18-year-old student who develops a crush on her 49-year-old English teacher and enters a romantic relationship with him. But while some fans were offended by the film’s content and the reality that the two actors had to film intimate scenes despite a 31 year age gap between them — a controversy that has been stoked by the film’s resurgence on Netflix — Freeman stands by his involvement in the film.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Freeman lamented the fact that the film has been the subject of online ire. Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega star in Miller’s Girl, an erotic thriller which recently began streaming on Netflix. Given the subject matter of Miller’s Girl, in which a high-school teacher has an inappropriate relationship with one of his students, there has been a fair share of backlash, with many focusing on the age gap between Freeman and Ortega.
While speaking with The Times of London, Martin Freeman, who is 31 years older than Ortega, defended Miller’s Girl from the backlash. The actor said the film is “grown-up and nuanced” when it comes to dealing with the age gap relationship, adding, “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?’” Stories dealing with difficult subject matter can invite backlash, which Freeman said is a shame. “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?” Freeman added.

Martin Freeman defends his new film, Miller’s Girl, from the criticism it has received for the age gap between him and his co-star, Jenna Ortega.
The erotic thriller, written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, depicts an affair between a student and a teacher. In real life, Freeman is 52 years old, while the Wednesday star is 21.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the Office UK alum said the film is “grown-up and nuanced,” adding that the film is not saying, “Isn’t this great.”

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega are two examples of brilliant actors from different generations. With Freeman having established himself a few decades ago and Ortega already having a strong presence despite her young age, it’s fun to compare their careers and creative approaches — but viewers found it far less fun to compare their ages when watching the two having an on-screen intimate relationship.
Freeman Speaks Up Against Public Backlash
The audience largely found Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega’s latest collaboration, The Miller’s Girl, quite disturbing. In the movie, the two actors play an English teacher and his young student who indulge in their near-forbidden relationship, and some viewers lashed at the movie for “romanticizing” relationships between minors and those they’re dependent on.
Freeman strongly disagrees with the sentiment.
The actor recently sat down with The Times and addressed the public backlash against The Miller’s Girl.

Martin Freeman recently spoke to The Times of London about the backlash that erupted over his movie “Miller’s Girl” earlier this year. The erotic thriller opened in theaters in January and caused a stir on social media due to intimate scenes between Freeman and his co-star Jenna Ortega. The movie casts the “Wednesday” favorite as an 18-year-old student who is attracted to her writing teacher (Freeman) and attempts to start an affair with him. Freeman is 31 years older than Ortega.
While some viewers were disturbed by the age gap between the actors and how the film required them to shoot some intimate moments together, Freeman stressed to The Times that “Miller’s Girl” is “grown-up and nuanced.” He also argued that just because the film shows the makings of a potential affair starting between characters who are 31 years apart doesn’t mean it is condoning such behavior.

Jenna Ortega's evolution from Disney princess to scream queen is about more than just a shift in the types of roles she plays. At some point during her transition from family-friendly TV to darker film roles, the actor has become a global star. Having gained widespread recognition for playing Wednesday Adams in Neftlix's "Wednesday," the now 21-year-old is set to star in the upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," where her character will fittingly represent a new generation of goth icons as the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz. In other words, Ortega has come a long way since her Disney Channel days. However, she hasn't quite come far enough for some, at least in terms of age.
In January 2024, "Miller's Girl" debuted in theaters. Ortega starred alongside Martin Freeman in this $4 million dollar erotic thriller, which unfortunately made just $890,000 in theaters. Critics weren't too impressed with "Miller's Girl," either, making...

Martin Freeman-starring series “The Responder” has revealed first-look photos of its anticipated second season.
Produced by Fremantle’s Dancing Ledge Productions, it’s set to debut on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on May 5 and will be available on BritBox this summer. Fremantle is handling global distribution. It has also released a trailer.
Written by Tony Schumacher, it will see its conflicted protagonist, police officer Chris, “trying to find his way out of the woods.”
“I am abusing this metaphor, but it’s an evolution. He thinks his life is going to be O.K.,” Schumacher told Variety.
“He has decided to take matters into his own hands,” added Freeman, as Chris finally – and reluctantly – tries therapy.
“He goes: ‘I am going to give it a go, maybe I will learn something.’ It’s about putting yourself in a situation where you can actually get some help. He is...

“I think it was Andy Warhol who said, “Make art and let others decide whether it is good or bad. But while they are deciding, make some more”.
That was the line with which Nicole Kidman ended her 15-minute acceptance speech after Meryl Streep had presented her with the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award.
That is something that seems entirely appropriate for Kidman, who doesn’t seem to stop “making art,” taking risks at every turn, telling stories through her power not just as an actor, but also a producer dedicated to bringing those stories to screens big and small. At 56, she is on the younger side of the previous 48 recipients of this very high honor, the first Australian to receive it. Frank Darabont's 1994 prison drama "The Shawshank Redemption" wasn't a big hit when it was released in theaters, earning only $16 million on a $25 million budget. Good reviews didn't help, although the film garnered a lot of attention when it was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor (for Morgan Freeman), but it lost in every category. That was the year of "Pulp Fiction" and "Forrest Gump," so a film like "Shawshank" was the outlier. Thanks to its nominations, however, the film was re-released in 1995, bolstering its box office. "Shawshank" also became one of the most-rented VHS cassettes of its day, eventually turning it into a well-regarded classic in its own right. By the late 1990s, it began appearing on lists of the best films of all time. To this day, "The Shawshank Redemption" sits at the very top of IMDb's top 250, right above...

The Shawshank Redemption is effortlessly one of the most magnificent pieces of work ever created in the history of cinema. Starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in the lead as Andy Dufresne and Ellis Boyd Redding, the film is widely considered a true masterpiece by critics and general audiences. However, even this masterpiece had a seeming plothole that puzzled a lot of fans.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994).
Well, at least that’s what Freeman liked to call the scene during the end of the movie in a recent interview at the TCM Classic Film Festival, where the movie celebrated 30 years of existence. But according to Robbins, what his co-star claims to be a plothole isn’t really a plothole, but rather, an extraordinarily simple thing that makes even calling it a “plothole” sound incredibly dumb!

The Shawshank Redemption director, Frank Darabont, bought the rights to Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption for $5000 in 1987. It was technically their second collaboration after Darabont adapted King’s The Woman in the Room into a short film. Interestingly, King did not see the vision of the director with the film, as the author felt that his 96-page novella was not a cinematic work like Carrie or The Shining.

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins’ The Shawshank Redemption is undoubtedly one of the best films released in 1994, the same year when Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump were released. While the latter two managed to nab some Oscars, The Shawshank Redemption shockingly went empty-handed, but, it hasn’t undermined its reputation of being one of the best films of that decade.

The ending of the film saw the emotional reunion of Freeman and Robbins’ characters. It seems the original treatment of the film was slightly different, one which Freeman was vehemently against.

Jenna Ortega is undoubtedly one of Hollywood's most talented rising stars. The actress was involved in some pretty big projects as a child, then gained recognition for her performance as young Jane in Jane the Virgin, for her starring role in Disney's Stuck in the Middle and her participation in Netflix's You. Now we know Ortega as the new Scream Queen, the new Wednesday, and a great dramatic actress with a lot of interesting movies coming up in the next few years.
However, Jenna Ortega's latest feature film role is not her most successful to say the least. And it's not even about the actress' performance, she doesn't deserve such a badly written character and script.
We are talking about the erotic thriller Miller's Girl, in which Ortega starred alongside none other than Martin Freeman. Unfortunately, the movie was panned by critics and audiences alike and flopped at the box office.

How often do we stumble upon a blockbuster flick that doesn’t quite get its due roses when it comes to the box office? Some films become instant classics, drawing audiences from every corner and grossing millions of dollars at the box office. However, there are some hidden gems that may not have received the recognition they deserve, despite their indescribable brilliance. One such film is The Shawshank Redemption, which starred Tim Robbins in the leading role.
The 1994 film, helmed by Frank Darabont (The Green Mile and The Mist), has endured the test of time and remains an unlikely classic. Despite receiving critical acclaim and seven Oscar nominations, The Shawshank Redemption did not perform well at the box office.

Morgan Freeman is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. In his career, which has spanned nearly six decades, the actor has rightly earned a reputation for being one of the best in the business.
The Unforgiven actor has teamed up with an assortment of other artists, but his work with Jim Carrey was very special. Carrey himself is regarded as one of the most versatile actors. From comedic performances in films like The Mask, to a poignant one in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, his talent is limitless. Unsurprisingly, if Freeman got a chance to work with Carrey again, he would agree to it in a heartbeat.

Martin Freeman returns for The Responder series 2, which is heading to the BBC in early May: here’s the trailer for the show.
The first series of psychological drama The Responder held a mirror up to the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing. Upon its 1994 release, Frank Darabont’s The Shawshank Redemption disappointed at the box office. Despite garnering critical acclaim and earning seven Oscar nominations at the 67th Academy Awards, the film fell short commercially, grossing only $18 million against a $25 million budget.

However, after getting praised by the Academy and receiving seven nominations, the film was re-released and reportedly earned an additional $10 million in revenue. Beyond its theatrical resurgence, it also gained significant traction among audiences, becoming the most rented movie of 1995.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of the most beloved, and critically acclaimed, films of all time. On top of having an excellent cast; including Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, Clancy Brown, and Bob Gunton, it was also directed by Frank Darabont, who is best known for his work in The Walking Dead.

Even though the film is a thriller, it almost has a lighthearted essence to it, which makes audiences love it all the more. It has an excellent approach to storytelling, showing the worst sides of humanity being overshadowed by a glimmer of hope. All of these aspects have helped the film become the highest-rated film on IMDb, holding a score of 9.3.
Despite this, the film had a very poor run at the box office when it was initially released. It would seem that Robbins has a theory about why this happened.

David Fincher is a philosopher as well as a perfectionist. When asked about the significance of his 8K remastering of “Seven” (premiering April 19 at the Chinese IMAX in 4K as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival), he told IndieWire, “If you think of it in string theory, it’s like a volumetric capture of where all these careers were at, and what these people wanted and needed and infused the thing with.”
Fincher was referring, of course, to Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Spacey, and the rest of the cast and crew who made his breakout 1995 serial killer neo-noir. The film was a brilliant analog product of the era (with only seven weeks of prep) but also ahead of its time in conveying a dark, creepy, nihilistic police procedural that got under our skin like no other film.
“It is what it is, warts and all,” Fincher said.

Nicole Kidman’s friends and collaborators will be in the building when she is honored at the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala.
AFI shared that Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, Naomi Watts and Reese Witherspoon are set as presenters for the gala, scheduled to take place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on April 27.
Fellow AFI Life Achievement Award winner Streep worked with Kidman on HBO’s Big Little Lies, as did Witherspoon. Both Kidman and Witherspoon served as executive producers of the Emmy Award-winning hit series. Watts is a longtime friend of Kidman, dating back to their early acting careers. They both starred in the 1991 feature Flirting. Freeman and Kidman collaborated on the Paramount series Lioness for Taylor Sheridan.

“The Gray House,” the Kevin Costner-produced limited series about a female spy ring during the Civil War, will open Monaco’s 63rd annual Monte-Carlo Television Festival in June.
The six-episode limited series tells the hidden-history tale of four Southern women — a Virginia socialite and her mother, a formerly enslaved Black woman and a high-end prostitute — who served as key espionage agents for the Union. The foursome are credited as unsung heroes who helped end the nation’s brutal cleavage in 1865. Mary-Louise Parker, Amethyst Davis, Daisy Head and Ben Vereen lead the ensemble cast.
Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary produce through their Revelations Entertainment banner alongside Costner’s Territory Pictures and Big Dreams Entertainment from Republic Pictures. Paramount Global Content Distribution is handling distribution of the series but it’s not yet clear where “Gray House” will land in the U.S.
