“It was all me, James. It’s always been me,” the villain played by Christoph Waltz reveals to super spy James Bond. “The author of all your pain.”
The name of that author? Ernst Stavro Blofeld. When Waltz revealed himself as Blofeld in 2015’s Spectre, he reversed a problem that had plagued the Bond franchise for decades: the long absence of 007’s greatest recurring arch-enemy and the huge stakes that came along with his every appearance.
How could the man who escaped every death trap and seduced every woman lose his man? How did the notoriously controlling Eon Productions, which owns the rights to Ian Fleming’s novels, let one of its most important characters slip through its hands?
Turns out, the true author of Bond’s pain is the copyright office and the he said/she said litigation that slows down big budget productions.

Allen confirmed with Showbiz Cheat Sheet that Gray had cheated on her. And that the couple is no longer together.

Mya Allen wasn’t even one of the two women in the love triangle with Austen Kroll last season, yet she still wanted him out of Summer House.

Kroll is a cast member on the Bravo series Southern Charm but somehow made his way onto Winter House for season one and then out to the Hamptons for the following season of Summer House. His visit caused way too much drama and had house members Lindsay Hubbard and Ciara Miller at each other’s throats.
Allen was having none of it.

After connecting with Carl Radke on her first season of Summer House, Mya Allen said their friendship is over, especially after he referred to her text as “weird.”
Allen and Radke formed a sweet friendship last season of Summer House. But Radke’s girlfriend Lindsay Hubbard came after her when Allen sent Radke a text asking him if he wanted to smoke pot. She accused Allen of having a crush on Radke, something Allen said was completely untrue.
And despite trying to clear the air with Radke on Summer House Season 7, Allen was left feeling as though Radke wasn’t the friend she thought he was … and that some of the explosive comments Kyle Cooke made about Radke weren’t exactly that out of line.

Mya Allen shocked Summer House fans when she revealed that she and Oliver Gray broke up. The couple, who started dating during the previous summer look cozy on season 7. But Allen said on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that Gray was not the man she thought he was.

When the government of the United Kingdom needs something impossible done, they call James Bond. Since 1962, we have watched 007 prevent madmen from flooding the Earth, knocking over rockets, starting a world war via the news media, and shooting people on an elaborate funhouse island. With his array of gadgets and unflappable charm, MI6’s best secret agent knows how to work his way out of any difficult situation, making the world safe for British Imperialism and unfettered capitalism.
But, of course, Bond is a figure of fantasy, not a real person, and real people rarely overcome such unlikely odds. At least, that was the case for director Sam Mendes, who faced a difficult situation while shooting the follow-up to the critically-praised Skyfall.

The 1970s produced a lot of great horror movies, but let’s face it, all those heaving bosoms and creepy castles begin to blur into one another after a while. Watch The Beast Must Die just once, however, and you will never forget it. Is that because it’s brilliant? Not really, but it’s a real oddity, one of those curiosities which become landmarks in cinematic history.
Part horror, part old fashioned whodunnit, the story revolves around eccentric millionaire Tom (Calvin Lockhart) and his wife Caroline (Marlene Clark), who invite a group of people to stay at their stately home in the English countryside and proceed to disclose their suspicion that one member of the group is a werewolf. Who could it be? Is it pianist Jan (Michael Gambon) or the young student he married, Davina (Ciaran Madden)? Could it be former diplomat Arthur (Charles Gray), now mired in scandal?...

When Sean Connery returned to the James Bond films after skipping out on "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (which is a great movie but seen as lesser at the time), anticipation was high. In 1971, Connery was Bond. George Lazenby was some pretender. There wasn't a tradition of handing over the character to a new actor yet. This was his grand return, and the film's creatives needed to get it right. They even brought back "Goldfinger" director Guy Hamilton to call the shots.
On a financial level, everyone was happy. "Diamonds Are Forever" was the third-highest grossing film at the domestic box office in 1971. On an artistic level ... it's one of the worst films in the series. Connery is clearly only in it for the paycheck, the story is weirdly low-stakes and silly, and the Las Vegas setting feels chintzy.
The film does have two major bright spots though. First, there's...

Sixty years is a long time in the lifespan of a human being. And in the life cycle of a fictional character’s popularity, it’s usually unthinkable: a vast ocean of time which is rarely crossed by products of something as fleeting and fickle as pop culture. Nevertheless, six decades since Sean Connery first donned the tuxedo and uttered the iconic line of “Bond, James Bond,” the 007 character has endured in popularity.
In fact, during the character’s golden jubilee in 2012, Bond became arguably bigger than ever with the 50th anniversary also coinciding with the highest grossing Bond film at the box office, courtesy of Skyfall… of course that record only holds if you don’t count inflation, or certainly the amount of tickets sold by Connery’s fourth outing as MI6’s best man, Thunderball (1965). Either way, even the dour and brooding Craig movies still act as a reflection,...

Inside “The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare” house at Halloween Horror Nights in Los Angeles is one of the “most outrageous” scenes the Universal Studios Hollywood event has done.
That’s according to John Murdy, creative director for Hhn in Hollywood, who teamed with Abel Tesfaye (known professionally as The Weeknd) to create a real-life nightmare based on the singer’s 2020 album for the 2022 event.
“We take it to the next level,” Murdy tells The Hollywood Reporter of the experience, which runs as part of the larger event through Oct. 31. “It’s probably one of the most surreal experiences we’ve created.”
In a statement given ahead of Hhn’s early September kickoff, The Weeknd shared that this project was one of his professional dreams. “I always wanted my own Halloween Horror Nights haunted house as Halloween has always been significant to my music,...

Just like its predecessor, "Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin" is great at engaging fans with lots of juicy plot details. With every episode comes a new batch of theories about the identity of this generation's deadly "A" stalker or the Liars' own mysterious pasts. Since the series takes place in the same universe as "Pretty Little Liars," eagle-eyed fans are also constantly on the lookout for unique connections to the original series - and episode six delivers a major one that potentially muddies the whole Pll timeline.
When Does the Original "Pretty Little Liars" Take Place?
First, here's a quick primer on when both series take place. "Pretty Little Liars" begins with Aria's (Lucy Hale) 2010 return to Rosewood in the pilot episode, a year after Alison's (Sasha Pieterse) 2009 disappearance. Daniel Craig’s tenure as James Bond is coming to an end. This truth has been known ever since it was announced that Craig would reprise the role in No Time to Die, his fifth outing as 007. And yet, given the litany of delays that movie has endured largely due to the pandemic—remember when No Time to Die was slated for November 2019?—the reality of his leaving feels like it’s been almost taken for granted.
The curtain really is coming down this month for UK fans, and the No Time to Die marketing team is now making folks aware of that again with the recent viral clip of Craig’s teary eyed farewell speech from the day production wrapped on the Bond movie. “Spies With Scruples”
By Raymond Benson
In comparing Masquerade (1965) with a recent review of Arabesque (1966) here at Cinema Retro, this time we have yet another mid-1960s “comedy-spy thriller,” a genre that was crowding the cinemas in those days because of the success of Double-o-You-Know-Who.
In contrast to Arabesque, this one is a British production, directed by the prolific and often brilliant Basil Dearden, and it utilizes London locations as well as spots in Spain. And yet, despite the thoroughly British DNA running through 95% of the movie, it stars American Cliff Robertson as the hero, David Fraser, a sort of CIA type who seems to approach all the danger around him with misplaced naivete and amused detachment.
The script marks the first appearance of the great William Goldman in a screen credit (co-writing with Michael Relph). It’s based on Vincent Canning’s novel,...

The famous red lips haven’t turned blue in the newly adapted “Rocky Horror Picture Show” imagery because they’ve spent too much time on the slab. The color scheme is emblematic of Tenacious D’s goal in doing an all-star remake of “The Time Warp” that has a “Rock-y the Vote” message — specifically, to vote blue or, as the revised lyrics have it, make “a jump to the left and not a step to the right.”

Giant lasers, underwater bases, poker games... 007's baddies don't always have the brightest evildoing ideas. Here are some of the silliest!
James Bond returns this year in No Time To Die--the 25th canonical 007 adventure and the fifth and final outing for star Daniel Craig.
This time around, Bond is going up against Rami Malek’s Safin, a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology. We don’t yet know what Safin has in store for Craig’s super spy, but producer Barbara Broccoli has described the character as "a nasty piece of work," while Malek has called him "quite unique and very complex."
The real question is: just how over-the-top will Safin’s evil plan turn out to be? As fun-to-watch as the franchise’s many iconic villains are, their 'genius' schemes are often insanely ambitious--and don’t make all that much sense either. So...

Duc, along with an old chum, goes on an adventure to save this young man and another young woman not just from themselves, but from the devil himself! Hammer’s key Satanic Mass epic comes to Blu-ray in a terrific improved transfer. Christopher Lee’s pitched battle with Charles Gray’s necromancer Mocata has long been a favorite of fans of symbolist rituals with candles, magic circles, Christian icons, etc. We’re happy to report that after all the monstrous demons and human sacrifices, good prevails through the agency of an ordinary housewife, who can sling a Latin incantation faster than you can say ‘The Goat of Mendes.’ This is yet another big-deal Hammer disc for 2019 — we also get a look at the earlier Blu-ray with its revised special effects.

The movie world is abuzz now that Bond 25 reportedly has a working title: “Shatterhand.” The title was first spotted by The Guardian in the industry publication Production Weekly, which also reports the movie will begin production at Britain’s legendary Pinewood studios on April 6. While film journalists are already starting to drag how foolish “Shatterhand” sounds, the title is not as random as it appears.
In Ian Fleming’s 12th Bond novel “You Only Live Twice,” released in 1964, Dr. Guntram Shatterhand is the alias used by the villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld. The novel culminates in a duel between Bond and Blofeld that ends with an enraged 007 strangling the villain to death with his bare hands. “You Only Live Twice” was already adapted into a James Bond movie, the 1967 Sean Connery entry directed by Lewis Gilbert, so it’s unlikely Bond 25 will use the source material — though Roald Dahl...

We round up our thoughts and reviews for the best (and rest) of this year's Sundance Film Festival.
Like that, another Sundance Film Festival is in the history books. Perhaps the most unique movie fest in North America, indie cinema’s opening salvo of the festival circuit brings new surprises each year. Unlike other prestigious film festivals on this continent, Sundance is only tangentially connected to the Oscar campaign race that defines Tiff, Telluride, New York, and all the other heavy hitters. Occurring even before the previous year’s Oscar winners have been newly christened, Sundance is the first deep breath of movie lovers' spring during the winds of winter. And in Robert Redford’s preferred little snowy, mountainside escape, many of the year’s defining independent innovations are previewed atop Park City’s icy and idyllic retreat.

This past spring, Charles Gray was new to Backstage—and he ended up booking a principal role in the Mozart opera “Don Giovanni.” The gig pushed him as a performer.“I performed the role of the servant Leporello, [who] is sent running all over the place by his master, Don Giovanni. The role is challenging and requires various operatic techniques, from singing long lines to patter both high and low in range.” Honesty will elevate you.“Be honest about your strengths as a performer in your profile. [It’s important to have] really good audio and/or video clips of your work, [which] make you stand out to casting agents who know what they want.” Backstage has the most to offer.“I use Backstage as much as possible since it offers such a vast array of opportunities for the aspiring performer. I just joined in April and was [quickly] cast in ‘Don Giovanni’! There are so many different opportunities to apply to,...

After over forty years since his last proper appearance in the franchise, James Bond’s nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld finally returned in 2015’s Spectre. As played by the Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz, this reimagined Blofeld was actually Bond’s long lost adoptive brother who suffered from a serious case of sibling rivalry. As the movie left Blofeld to die another day, it was assumed that Waltz would be back for what’s likely Daniel Craig’s final bow as 007 in 2019’s Bond 25.
It turns out, though, that this is definitely not on the cards. Waltz was recently asked if we should expect another appearance from him as Blofeld and he made it abundantly clear that we shouldn’t. The way he worded his reply, though, doesn’t rule out the possibility that the character could be recast.
No, I’m sorry. I’m really sad, but that’s the tradition,...

The Creative Death sub-sub-genre took flight in the ‘70s with The Omen (1976), as that little imp Damien (and his dad) dispatched the cast in different macabre and entertaining ways. (Variety is the spice, and all that.) The ’78 sequel continued the burgeoning tradition, leading us up to The Legacy (1978) - a film that takes its own stab at variety by marrying The Old Dark House to The Dark Underlord and delivering a fun, wicked (albeit goofy) little offspring.
Released in September in the U.K. (and the following September stateside) by Columbia-emi-Warner (and Universal in the U.S.), The Legacy brought in $11 million against its $2.5 million budget, making it a commercial if not critical success. That this British/American co-production manages to combine their unique aesthetics into something coherent is and of itself some kind of horror miracle.

Time really is fleeting. It's been over 40 years since Tim Curry donned his fishnets to play Dr. Frank N. Furter — first in the 1973 London stage production, and then in the film classic from 1975 — and now he'll return to Fox's two-hour production, set to air in the fall of 2016. Since Laverne Cox is slated to play the sweet-transvestite scientist, Curry will play the criminologist narrator (played by Charles Gray in the film). He also joins Adam Lambert as Eddie and Victoria Justice and Ryan McCartan as sweethearts Janet and Brad, to whom he will relay the instructions to jump to the left, put their hands on their hips, and become icons of stage and screen.

It certainly took the movies awhile to warm up to the idea of The Behooved One stepping across our screens. Looking to America, Hammer Films waited until Ira Levin’s novel Rosemary’s Baby (1967) was published (and purchased for filming) before going forth with their first satanic foray on film, The Devil Rides Out (1968). Based on Dennis Wheatley’s novel of the same name from 1934, it was Hammer’s chance to move away from Gothic horror and prove that they could compete in an ever changing market. But The Devil Rides Out did more than that – it provided Hammer with one of their very finest films, a chilling thrillride that still delivers the devil drenched goods.

Diamonds are Forever
Directed by Guy Hamilton
Screenplay by Richard Maibaum & Tom Mankiewicz
UK, 1971
Following up On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, widely considered by most fans to be the best Bond incarnation pre-reboot, here the series takes a step back to recast the iconic Sean Connery in the role of mischievous misogynist Jimmy B, and promptly trips over itself in a strangely crass and dull outing. Replacing the wooden George Lazenby with the series’ original super spy proves to be mere consolation rather than icing on the cake bomb.
Diamonds are Forever surprisingly starts with direct continuity, with Bond leading a ruthless and fisticuffs laden hunt across the world for wife killer Ernst Stavros Blofelt (played here by Charles Gray). He eventually tracks down the evil mastermind and gives him a searing exit to proceedings, or so it seems. Getting back to the small matter of his day job...

Special Mention: Death Proof
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino
USA, 2007
Genre: Slasher
The obvious reference points of Death Proof are such movies as Vanishing Point, Roadgames, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, and even Spielberg’s Duel – but Death Proof is influenced by more than just vehicular horror. Tarantino’s homage to the road-fury genre is really two movies in one, offering two versions of the same story about two separate groups of beautiful women who are stalked by a homicidal maniac who uses his car (his weapon of choice) to terrorize and eventually kill his victims. Death Proof can easily be viewed as two slasher films, with the second half acting as a sequel, offering new, beautiful victims for the murderous Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) to terrorize. It’s a grim stalk-and-slash picture with a blaring commentary of female empowerment. Replace the typical sharp edged blade with a car, and...

"Enter at your own risk!!" screams a sign early on in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's a fair warning for a film that's as unapologetically bonkers as you'd imagine a Cyndi Lauper sleepover or a John Waters nightmare to be, swimming in batty humour, extravagant costumes and hummable anarchy. With Tim Curry tottering around in high heels and suspenders, and Susan Sarandon harmonising in nothing but her bra, director Jim Sharman's 1975 musical adaptation is a veritable anthem to the odd.
Risky? Yes, but in the intervening 40 years, it's become a cult phenomenon that's stood the test of time remarkably well, partly because it never belonged to a discernible time period anyway. Based on Richard O'Brien's 1973 stage show (then called The Rocky Horror Show), the film sends up and celebrates the schlocky sci-fi/horror tropes of the '30s, '40s and '50s, revelling in a kitschy timelessness.

Best and worst Bond theme songs ranked: Every single's here, but which are classics and which need their 00 status revoked?
James Bond has returned with an action-packed new trailer for the franchise's latest instalment Spectre.
Spectre will pick up from the events of Skyfall as Daniel Craig's 007 receives a cryptic message from his past leading him to confront the deadly criminal organisation of the title.
In Bond movie past, Spectre (Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion) has been led by Bond's arch-nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
It's been speculated that Christoph Waltz will take on the latest incarnation of the character, previously played by Donald Pleasance, Telly Savalas and Charles Gray.
Spectre sees Craig back for his fourth appearance as Bond (matching Pierce Brosnan's record), with Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Rory Kinnear and Naomie Harris also reprising their roles.

We don’t know a great deal about the content of the 90-minute Sherlock special set to air later this year, but one thing has emerged from the set photos and tantalising titbits of information we’ve seen so far. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson will be in nineteenth-century garb, pitching them back into the setting of the legendary detective’s original adventures: 1895, to be precise. Why that happens is as yet unclear, but all will be revealed.
For those still craving their Holmes fix in the meantime, the new film Mr. Holmes offers us Ian McKellen’s take on the character, musing upon an old case as he looks back on his long career from the vantage point of retirement. The trailer reveals him in shadow, sitting at a table beneath which he could conceivably be stroking a white cat. He is the sinister new bad guy in a film called Spectre, which reintroduces the Special Executive For Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge And Extortion into the James Bond franchise. There has, understandably, been much speculation that Christoph Waltz will be revealed to be a certain Ernst Stavro Blofeld in this year's 24th Bond movie. But Waltz is categorically insisting that this isn't so."That is absolutely untrue," Waltz told GQ. "That rumour started on the internet, and the internet is a pest. The name of my character is Franz Oberhauser."Attentive readers may recall that Naomie Harris similarly told Empire flat-out pre-Skyfall that she wasn't playing Miss Moneypenny. You may also cast your minds back to the time Benedict Cumberbatch absolutely was not playing Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.
