Back then, no one was expecting The Descent to go on and become one of the most widely acclaimed horror films of the decade. Even today, Neil Marshall’s second creature-feature (the first being Dog Soldiers) remains a favorite among audiences and critics everywhere. This iconic film defies those expectations based on its cast and pitch — not a man in sight as six women battle a clan of cave-dwelling monsters — and then delivers a thoughtful study of friendships, grief, and survival.
So when a sequel was announced, fans’ curiosity and anticipation turned into nervousness once it was revealed that Marshall was neither directing nor writing the follow-up. Instead, the first film’s editor, Jon Harris, was promoted to director, and the script was handled by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins. Other details about The Descent Part 2 were scant prior to its 2009 release, but after it was finally seen,...

Gavan O’Herlihy, an actor whose extensive roster of roles in TV and film often was overshadowed by a character that famously evaporated — he played Chuck Cunningham, eldest son of the central Happy Days family, who exited with barely a subsequent mention — has died. He was 70.
The Dublin-born actor died Sept. 15 of undisclosed causes in Bath, England. His death was first reported by The Irish Echo newspaper.
Ron Howard, who starred as Chuck’s little brother Richie Cunningham on the hit ABC 1970s sitcom, tweeted: “I knew him as the 1st of 2 Chucks on #HappyDays & then as Airk in #Willow where I had the pleasure of directing him. A talented actor with a big free spirit.”
After making seven appearances in 1974 during the first season of Happy Days, O’Herlihy vanished from series; his character would appear in two additional episodes, played by Randolph Roberts, before disappearing for good. O’Herlihy...

Gavan O’Herlihy, best known for playing Richie and Joanie Cunningham’s disappearing brother Chuck on “Happy Days,” has died. He was 70.
O’Herlihy died in Bath, England on Sept. 15, his brother, Cormac O’Herlihy, confirmed to Variety. A cause of death was not disclosed, but his brother confirmed that it was not Covid-19.
After making an appearance on an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1973, O’Herlihy broke out on “Happy Days” as Chuck, the eldest Cunningham sibling. Chuck was a high school jock and was almost always seen carrying a basketball. He was played by three different actors — Ric Carrott in the show’s pilot, O’Herlihy for the first two seasons and Randolph Roberts for two episodes in Season 2 — giving way to the pejorative “Chuck Cunningham syndrome” to describe TV characters who disappeared from shows and were later written off as if they never existed.
After “Happy Days,...

The home belonging to "Mr. and Mrs. C." turns out to be more affluent than one might expect the owner of a hardware store to have. The Cunninghams lived in their home at 565 North Clinton Drive in Milwaukee for the duration of Happy Days. That house saw a lot -- from the arrival of an alien named Mork to the marriages of children Joanie and Richie and the strange disappearance of their older brother, Chuck.
Happy Days was spawned from an episode of Love, American Style and became its own series. The TV show centers around a typical American family in the '50s and '60s. Tom Bosley and Marion Ross play Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham, and Ron Howard and Erin Moran play their kids, Richie and Joanie. In the first two seasons they had an older brother, Chuck (Gavan O'Herlihy, Randolph Roberts), but never returned home from...

Horror movie sequels usually die faster than the first victim in the story. It doesn't matter if the original was amazing or terrible, it's just the way it goes the majority of the time. UK flick, The Descent, actually did well as a theatrical release back in 2006. The horror title generated enough buzz over in Europe and in a variety of film festivals. Hence, a U.S. release date was set a year later. Now five years later, the sequel is replicating the original's journey once again.
The Descent 2 picks up exactly where the first one left off. Reprising the lead role of Sarah is Shauna Macdonald. A rarity in direct to DVD flicks, which is where Descent 2 will be found in the domestic market on April 27th. If a chunk of time has passed since seeing the first installment. Pop that in before watching the sequel.

2005's The Descent was an unexpected delight for horror fans. It sort of came out of nowhere -- written and directed by then-unknown Neil Marshall (who had previously impressed us with Dog Soldiers), it was a grim, gory, innovative movie that quite frankly scared the hell out of me. That's something that's pretty uncommon these days -- a horror movie that's actually scary. Marshall's story of six cave explorers who become trapped in a labyrinthine underground nightmare filled with creepy humanoid predators was a tribute to minimalist film-making. He used only the light generated by actual flashlights and flares, made good use of sound effects, and sparse music -- successfully making the viewer feel like they were in the cave with the characters. It was, in a word, brilliant -- so much so that we named it the best horror movie of the aughts.

Lionsgate will be releasing The Descent: Part 2 on DVD April 27th. This sequel picks up where the first one left off, with character Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) returning to a gruesome scene. Here several off her friends were ingested by the "feral crawlers," but there is a possibility of survivors (Movie). However, after being treated in the hospital, Sarah can't offer a satisfactory account of what happened to her friends. So, she's then forced by authorities back underground with a rescue team only to again encounter the feral crawlers...

A promo trailer for The Descent 2 has hit. The flick, a sequel to Neil Marshall’s 2005 claustrophobic horror tale, stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern, Douglas Hodge and Krysten Cummings. Distraught, confused, and half-wild with fear, Sarah Carter (Macdonald) emerges alone from the Appalachian cave system where she encountered unspeakable terrors. Unable to plausibly explain to the authorities what happened - or why she's covered in her friends' blood - Sarah is forced back to the subterranean depths to help locate her five missing companions.

Here’s your first real look at The Descent: Part 2, the upcoming sequel to Neil Marshall’s 2006 horror flick. Marshall, who also helmed Dog Soldiers and Doomsday, is executive producing the sequel while directing duties have gone to Jon Harris. The project is Harris’ feature debut. He’s worked in the industry for over ten years as an editor on films like Snatch, Ripley's Game, Layer Cake, Stardust and the first Descent. The flick picks up right after the first, with Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) emerging alone from the Appalachian cave system where she encountered unspeakable terrors. Unable to plausibly explain to the authorities what happened - or why she's covered in her friends' blood - Sarah is forced back to the subterranean depths to help locate her five missing companions. Natalie Jackson Mendoza, Krysten Cummings, Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern and Douglas Hodge also star.

Unit photographer Ollie Upton revealed a cave-full of stills from the upcoming The Descent: Part 2 . Great for you, because now you've got a early look at the Jon Harris-directed sequel; great for us, because now we've got a few images to disperse throughout something cool coming up this week on Shock. The UK is expected to see the next installment, starring Shauna MacDonald, on screens in the early summer. MacDonald reprises her role as Sarah, survivor of the first entry's massacre. She returns to the caves where her friends supposedly died to search for survivors. Natalie Mendoza, Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas and Anna Skellern co-star.

Two crawlers lounge idly on a sofa wrapped in matching dressing gowns. One glances at a newspaper while the other sits lost in thought. Fear not readers, Mike Leigh is not here directing The Descent 2 as some kind of kitchen sink drama centred around a family of crawlers, I've merely stumbled across the crawler workshop where the pair are waiting to be called onto set - but it's a surreal sight nonetheless.
I've been invited to spend a day at Ealing Studios where filming on the sequel to Neil Marshall's acclaimed British horror has entered its penultimate week. For those of you that haven’t seen the original (and where have you been hiding?), The Descent followed a group of six female adrenaline-junkies who go spelunking – that’s caving to you and me - and end up in a whole world of trouble when they fall foul of a bunch of naked ghouls,...
