As expansive and iconic as its title suggests, Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in the West certainly seemed to be written in John Ford’s blood, from the vast wide-angle visions of Monument Valley that Leone and cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli luxuriated in, to the railroad-based, future-of-America economic landscape that serves as a backdrop to a number of bandit-versus-bandit power plays. Henry Fonda, with that methodical, stately stroll of his and those killer blue eyes barely visible from under the rim of his hat, can be seen and heard throughout, sending a shiver of great nostalgia up one’s spine. Ripened and tanned by years of desert sunlight, Ford’s Wyatt Earp is back in the saddle again.
But that particular pace and posture that Fonda had become known for in such films as My Darling Clementine, matched with the devious glint in those baby blues, now took...

The first film in Fernando Di Leo’s so-called Milieu trilogy, Caliber 9 explores the criminal underbelly of Milan, a city more typically associated with the modish institutions of high finance and haute couture. The film’s full Italian title, Milan Caliber 9, emphasizes the centrality of location, while also referring to a collection of stories by crime writer Giorgio Scerbanenco, several of which Di Leo loosely adapted for the film. Generically, Caliber 9 is a fascinating mashup of the gritty poliziotteschi genre and stylish neo-noirs in the vein of Jean-Pierre Melville. Its tight-lipped protagonist certainly seems patterned after Alain Delon’s buttoned-down hitman in Le Samouraï, right down to the brown trench coat.
Di Leo’s film opens with a brilliantly executed pre-credits sequence that details a laundered currency handoff gone wrong, as well as the mob’s violent reprisals, along the way providing a handy cross-section of Milan’s criminal demimonde,...

I don't think I'll ever tire of rhapsodizing about the shootouts in the movies of Sergio Leone. He was a director fascinated by the infinite possibilities of the showdown -- the critical few moments before the duelists draw their guns and try to shoot each other dead. With extreme close-ups, he studied faces as time stretched out to impossible lengths. And then, the matter was settled in a brief flurry of violence.
Leone's obsession with the waiting period reached its artistic peak in "Once Upon a Time in the West." Here, the timer for the showdown begins well before the logical starting point -- when all the adversaries are present and facing each other. For eight breathless minutes, three villains stand around and do nothing at a dusty train station in the middle of nowhere. One cracks his knuckles. Another tries to take a nap but is bothered by a fly.

To celebrate the release of Jungle Cruise, which is out now in UK cinemas and on Disney + Premium Access, we had the chance to sit down with Edgar Ramírez, one of the film’s stars, to find out more.
Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) enlists the aid of wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) to take her down the Amazon in his ramshackle boat. Together, they search for an ancient tree that holds the power to heal — a discovery that will change the future of medicine. Along the way, they discover the secrets of Don Aguirre (Ramírez) who in the 16th century went on his own search for the ancient tree – known as the Tears of the Moon – and ends up getting more than he bargained for.
Speaking to us, Ramírez told us about the strange thrills of playing a bad guy, how the film takes its inspiration from classic adventure films like Indiana Jones,...

Blame Johnny Depp.
I mean, listen, feel free to blame the actor for any number of things, if you want. But specifically, in terms of riot-act reading, let’s go back to 2003, when Mr. Depp slapped on a head scarf, trotted out his best Keef Richards wobble and slur, and turned what felt like a Disney Hail-Mary I.P. cash-in into a cash cow. No one expected a movie based on an amusement park ride based on creaky, age-old seafaring stories to give birth to a popular franchise; no one...

Alrighty, who’s ready for some theme park fun and thrills? What, you say you don’t want to wait in the long lines in the hot, hot sun way too close to possibly infected throngs of people? Oh, and don’t get me started on those inflated parking fees (after traffic jams) and concession prices! Well, how about your favorite ride coming to you.? Well, not exactly, but close by, say the nearby multiplex cinema. That’s part of the thinking behind this weekend’s big, big movie release. Oh, and starting a new franchise (of course). That’s why the “mouse house” has their gloved fingers (and tails crossed). Could they have another Pirates Of The Caribbean, or could it go the way of the Country Bears (y’know from the Jamboree)? It all depends on how many moviegoers hop aboard this big ole’ Jungle Cruise.

From the world of Disney that brought the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride to life in a series of successful live-action films starring Johnny Depp now comes a much feebler attempt to spin another park attraction into celluloid gold. This time out, Dwayne Johnson takes the mantle and the ride of choice is Jungle Cruise. As personable as Johnson is, neither he nor a strong performance from Emily Blunt can do anything to save this overlong film from eventually succumbing to its overbearing script.
Johnson plays Frank Wolff, the captain of a small river boat he calls La Quila, that he pilots up and down the Amazon leading thrill-seeking tourists on a staged adventure, much like a theme park ride. His delicate life/work balance is disrupted when researcher Dr. Lily Houghton (Blunt) arrives with her brother, McGregor (Jack Whitehall), to charter a vessel to take them to the heart...

Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson are romancing riverboat adventurers in a ride-turned-film that quickly becomes bland
The Jungle Cruise theme-park ride is a riverboat trip that Disneyland visitors have been queuing up for since the 1950s: an old-timey craft travelling down an artificial jungle river, with a jolly captain pointing out animatronic animals lurching out of the artificial undergrowth. Now it’s been adapted into a blandly inoffensive piece of generic entertainment: screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (who once gave us Bad Santa and I Love You Phillip Morris) have mashed up The African Queen with Raiders of the Lost Ark, and with what I admit is a surreal splash of Aguirre, Wrath of God.
It’s lively enough for the first 20 minutes. The year is 1916, and Emily Blunt plays Lily Houghton, a haughty yet idealistic British scientist, much patronised by the male establishment in London. She imperiously hires...

In “Jungle Cruise,” a Disney adventure that demonstrates how basing a movie on a theme-park ride may now be a more natural occurence than adapting it from a novel, Emily Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, a London researcher-explorer who’s as fearless, in her demure way, as Indiana Jones, and Dwayne Johnson is Frank Wolff, the friendly huckster of a river-boat captain who ferries her down the Amazon at the height of World War I.
He wears a hat just like the one Humphrey Bogart wore in “The African Queen,” and she wears pants — which, of course, were an early adaptation of Katharine Hepburn’s. For anyone old enough, or old-movie-centered enough, to care (which is maybe five percent of this movie’s prospective audience), the banter between these two could be said to evoke Bogart and Hepburn — or, at least, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner in “Romancing the Stone.

For moviegoers of a certain age, Jungle Cruise is going to feel pleasantly familiar. Similar to a theme park attraction from one’s youth, older millennials with kids of their own will be quick to notice the overt “homages” to Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s Mummy movies; they’ll certainly be reminded of Disney’s other successful adaptation of a Disneyland classic, with grotesque enemies resembling the cursed pirates of the Black Pearl; and there’s even Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson himself, still making jungle life look good almost 20 years after The Rundown.
Yet if they also are able to take the grandparents to the cinema (or just a Disney+ couch), they might recognize the real magic emanating from this utterly delightful adventure: In its heart of hearts, Jaume Collet-Serra’s Jungle Cruise is a throwback to old school Disney escapism and the type of movies greenlit when Walt was still alive.

To just create a little healthy rivalry between the two main stars of ‘Jungle Cruise’ Disney has launched 2 new trailers for the comedy adventure featuring Dave Gobson and Ethel Brunt.
Inspired by the famous Disneyland theme park ride, Disney’s “Jungle Cruise” is an adventure-filled, rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. Lily travels from London, England to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank’s questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities—possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest. But as the secrets of the lost tree unfold, the stakes reach even higher for Lily and Frank...

Disney’s Jungle Cruise has its roots in history, but it’s focused on being a little more female-forward. The movie focuses on two leads, curmudgeonly steamboat captain Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) and scientist Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt). Inspiration for the film comes from both the original Disneyland theme park ride and the 1951 film The African Queen. In both, […]

"Why should I pay more dead?" Disney has dropped off two more amusing trailers for the Jungle Cruise movie, one for each of the main characters: Dwayne Johnson stars as the riverboat captain Frank Wolff, and also Emily Blunt as an explorer named Lily Houghton. This "adventure-filled, Amazon-jungle" voyage from director Jaume Collet-Serra opens in theaters And on Disney+ on the same day in July. Lily travels from London to the Amazon jungle and enlists Frank's questionable services to guide her downriver on La Quila—his ramshackle-but-charming boat. Lily is very determined to find an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities. The cast includes Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, Veronica Falcón, Andy Nyman, and Paul Giamatti. These are two fun trailers, getting us into the vibe and the mood of this rollicking Pirates of the Caribbean-esque journey into the jungle. It's also nice to see some creative marketing,...

The coronavirus pandemic has affected the movie business in a pretty big way, from leaving big cinema chains like AMC on the brink of bankruptcy to countless movie delays, and Jungle Cruise is no different. The Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt Disney adventure has been delayed to 2021 due to the ongoing global health emergency. Disney made the announcement in April, well ahead of the movie’s original July premiere.
Regarding this Disney romp, Johnson‘s big-screen backlog is a proverbial battle royal of major movies, but few are as intriguing given the pedigree of who he’s partnered with (i.e. not Vin Diesel or Jason Statham) as Jungle Cruise. Based on a Disneyland and Disney World riverboat theme park ride, this branded project is clearly designed to recreate the same lucrative ride-to-movie magic of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but with Blunt co-starring in the film, it also...

Musicians young and old drop a lot of heavy-duty jazz wisdom throughout Beyond the Notes, a new documentary about Blue Note Records that features commentary from the label’s Sixties stars such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter and new-school trailblazers like Robert Glasper and Ambrose Akinmusire. But the film’s single most eloquent statement might come from A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad who, reflecting on how Blue Note’s output fueled his own art through sampling, says that improvisation is akin to “finding a portal that...

(See previous post: Fourth of July Movies: Escapism During a Weird Year.) On the evening of the Fourth of July, besides fireworks, fire hazards, and Yankee Doodle Dandy, if you're watching TCM in the U.S. and Canada, there's the following: Peter H. Hunt's 1776 (1972), a largely forgotten film musical based on the Broadway hit with music by Sherman Edwards. William Daniels, who was recently on TCM talking about 1776 and a couple of other movies (A Thousand Clowns, Dodsworth), has one of the key roles as John Adams. Howard Da Silva, blacklisted for over a decade after being named a communist during the House Un-American Committee hearings of the early 1950s (Robert Taylor was one who mentioned him in his testimony), plays Benjamin Franklin. Ken Howard is Thomas Jefferson, a role he would reprise in John Huston's 1976 short Independence. (In the short, Pat Hingle was cast as John Adams; Eli Wallach was Benjamin Franklin.) Warner...

Daliah Lavi had an odd career, when you think about it: ballet student, German pop singer, Israeli soldier and international film star, maybe best known for Casino Royale (the silly one). In 1963 she got the living crap beat out of her in two films, Mario Bava's The Whip and the Body, a ripe slice of S&M gothic horror with Christopher Lee as a flagellating phantom (maybe), and Brunello Rondi's Il demonio (The Demon), which is an even weirder piece of work.Rondi also had an odd career: an intellectual who provided regular screenwriting services for Fellini (La dolce vita, 8 1/2, Satyricon), his directing career slid rapidly into exploitation movies, crime to gialli to porno, which he appears to have attempted to imbue with some social commentary, with who knows what success? Il demonio is the first of his directorial efforts I've seen.Rondi plunges us into a strange world,...

The Lickerish Quartet
Directed by Radley Metzger
Screenplay by Michael DeForrest
Italy| USA | West Germany, 1970
America’s number one softcore purveyor, Radley Metzger, and one of the pioneers of sex cinema, is best known as the director of such erotic milestones as Little Mother, Score and the French lesbian drama Therese and Isabelle. With all of his features, he was acclaimed for his stylish visuals and some say he was one of the best directors of the “porno chic” era of adult cinema. Just before making the transition into hardcore adult films, he directed what many believe to be his greatest and most mainstream movie, The Lickerish Quartet.
In a variation of Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Teorema, the film opens on an aristocratic family of three who watch a stag film together. There’s the father (Frank Wolff); his wife (Erika Remberg), and her grown son (Paolo Turco), who all...

One of the things I love about Arrow Video releases is the ability they give me to extend my exposure to movies that are harder to find, especially world cinema releases. Fernando Di Leo’s Milano Calibro 9 is the latest Italian gangster film to be released by the company and brings on the gritty ultra-violence to the gangster movie.

Death Occurred Last Night
Written by Artur Brauner, Biagio Proietti, Giorgio Scerbaneco, Duccio Tessari
Directed by Duccio Tessari
Italy, 1970
As a feature relatively hidden from mainstream film culture, Death Occurred Last Night’s only critical talk belongs to the hardcore giallo enthusiasts. Debate over whether the film fits into the strict classifications of giallo or perhaps the less-enthused poliziotteschi take prominence in these discussions, with something of a consensus drawn as “probably neither.” These insights from impassioned people looking through the lens of subgenre offer an interesting dissection that would escape those new to the club. That is, by evaluating the film purely in the context of it entering the genre canon, one must take its failures in the context of being campy, and therefore enjoyable in its own right. However, if outside the giallo realm, these camp elements are harder to defend and leave the film in a much messier position,...

Raro Video continues remastering rare and obscure Italian titles with the long unavailable 1970 curio from Duccio Tessari, Death Occurred Last Night. A rare hybrid of police thriller and giallo, this fascinating title is a definite highlight in the little known Tessari’s varied filmography. Most noted for his work in spaghetti westerns, those unfamiliar with his work will surely be interested in seeking out other available titles. As seedy and ridiculous as it is intriguing and unfailingly amusing, its attention to character and narrative development sets it apart from similar titles of the time period, preceding comparable American fare such as Paul Schrader’s 1979 Hardcore.

The Lickerish Quartet
Review by Pete of Mondo Squallido
Stars: Silvana Venturelli, Frank Wolff, Erika Remberg, Paolo Turco | Written by Michael DeForrest | Directed by Radley Metzger
The second film chronologically from Arrow’s three Metzger releases is The Lickerish Quartet. A film that upon it’s release was critically praised by the likes of Andy Warhol but panned by critics such as Roger Ebert. A film that blurs reality and illusion and a film that is for some both visually complex and intellectually stimulating. The Lickerish Quartet is easily one of Metzger’s most ambitious films from his filmography.
The film opens up with a rich couple played by Frank Wolff and Erika Remberg watching pornography with Remberg’s son played by Paolo Turco. After becoming bored of the film, they decide to go to a travelling carnival to watch a live stunt show. One of the riders, played by...

From just the first few minutes into Once Upon a Time in the West its magnificence is immediately evident. What is perhaps Leone’s best western opens with a beautifully orchestrated sequence that sees three unnamed gunmen awaiting the arrival of train and one of its passengers, ‘Harmonica’ (Charles Bronson). Leone builds tension in this scene using every tool at his disposal, most obviously in the effective use of a soundscape that manipulates sound effects and the score so as to control the audience’s reactions down to the finest detail. His almost patented use of wide shots and close-ups also both establishes and develops whilst at the same time never losing any engagement with the viewer. The opening is a lesson in filmmaking from one of cinema’s greatest experts and the excellence on display here continues throughout.

Sergio Leone only has seven official credits as a director. Certainly such little output may make him forgettable, but when we look at the style and quality of those films it etches his name into film history. Now one of his greatest comes to high definition in all its glory. A must have for western and film enthusiasts. Mail-order-bride Jill (Claudia Cardinale) is arriving from New Orleans to meet her new husband Brett McBain (Frank Wolff). Her happy arrival is turned horrific when she finds that McBain and his children have been gunned down and the main suspect is the recently escaped bandit Cheyenne (Jason Robards) and his gang. “Crudity is in the eye of the beholder.” So says Erika Remberg in the opening scene of Radley Metzger’s 1970 softcore feature The Lickerish Quartet, one of a string of Metzger films that attempted to bring artistry to erotica at a time when cinema was open to that. Remberg is referring to a pornographic film that she watches with her husband Frank Wolff in front of their milquetoast grown son Paolo Turco, but she could also be describing the guiding principles of Metzger, a director who dealt with sex frankly and creatively in his long career, which extended to ...

Jeffman from Head Full Of Snow recommends five Spaghetti Westerns not directed by Sergio Leone.
A bruised and battered stalwart of the late night cinema circuit, the Spaghetti Western held a bastardised, custom-job revolver to the head of its inferior American cousin and relieved it of both its basic premise and last shred of decency; joyously blurring the line between right and wrong and leaving morality swinging from a ragged noose in the hot, desert sun.
The Spaghetti Western was an Italian phenomenon, mostly financed by Rome's famous Cinecitta Studios, although there were plenty of co-productions with other Euro countries like Spain and Germany, even stretching as far afield as Israel if you count the soul-sapping awfulness that is God's Gun. One man is responsible for popularising the Spaghetti Western, Sergio Leone. If you're a follower of LateMag's frequent forays into the weird and wonderful worlds of cult cinema you'll probably know his films already.
