J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" feature film wasn't so much an adaptation of the 1966 TV series as it was a film version of how non-Trekkies view the franchise. To explain: on the TV series, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) is typically depicted as being judicious, stern, and decisive. Because of the few times Kirk solved problems with his fists, however, he has gained a (perhaps unfair) reputation for being a reckless cowboy, an insufferable lothario, and a flippant charmer. Abrams' version of Kirk (Chris Pine) rolled with those misconceptions, making a "high-octane" version of the character. Indeed, all the characters are now broader, more passionate versions of themselves. This is in addition to each of them being secret super-geniuses, deeply expert in at least one field of science, language, medicine, or engineering.

Viacom, the parent company of Paramount, underwent a dramatic split in 2005, causing the TV rights to "Star Trek" and the movie rights to "Star Trek" to be divided among two separate companies. This meant that if the movie-owners wanted to make a new feature film, they would have to license "Star Trek" iconography from the TV-owners. Under the conditions of such a liscense, a movie had to look legally distinct from the old TV show. What a headache.
This situation led to the creation of the Kelvin-verse, a "Star Trek" continuity that took place in a parallel timeline. The 2009 "Star Trek" movie featured the same ships and characters as the 1966 "Star Trek," but altered into something similar-yet-different. New actors played younger versions of the 1966 originals, and the U.S.S. Enterprise was now twice as big. Director J.J. Abrams also made the new movie more dramatic, action-packed, and full of explosions.

Paramount is making another effort to make Star Trek 4 happen, with The Flight Attendant writer Steve Yockey behind the script.
Eight years on from Star Trek: Beyond, Paramount and Bad Robot are still trying to get a sequel together that reunites the series’ cast, including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban
The name behind this latest attempt is screenwriter Steve Yockey, who’s best known for TV series The Flight Attendant – a comedy murder mystery starring Kaley Cuoco. Yockey also wrote episodes of Supernatural and the Scream TV spin-off series.
Nothing else is known about the project at present, though Variety reports that Paramount hopes to get the core cast first established in 2009’s Star Trek, which also includes Zoe Saldana and John Cho. The glaring exception will of course be Anton Yelchin, who tragically passed away in 2016.

There's more "Star Trek" television right now that Trekkies know what to do with. Whether you prefer it when the franchise is philosophical yet whimsical in the manner of Gene Roddenberry's original ground-breaking series ("Strange New Worlds"), a mix of raunchy humor and emotionally mature sci-fi storytelling ("Lower Decks"), or embracing a "warm, flashy, 'heart dangling on the sleeve with such force that you might as well brace for an aerial spray' ethos" (as /Film's own Jacob Hall put it in his review of the "Discovery" season 5 premiere), there's something for "Trek" enthusiasts of ever shade right now -- again, on the small screen. Unfortunately, if you enjoy it when the property stretches its wings and takes flight in theaters, you've been plumb out of luck since 2016.
Indeed, the last eight years have been a never-ending cycle of news about "Star Trek" films being put into development, only to...

I first reviewed Green Room back in 2017 for my blog Wight Blood and gave it a score of 9/10. I don’t think I have watched it since so with this Second Sight 4k/Blu-ray release, I had the opportunity to see if it was just as good on second viewing.
The movie follows a punk band as they attempt to tour and book a last-minute gig at a neo-nazi bar with the promise of some decent money. They play the gig and attempt to leave as quickly as possible but after they witness something they shouldn’t have, things turn nasty and they get stuck in the green room with nowhere to go.

Writer-director Jeremy Saulnier talks to us about the making of the 2015 survival thriller Green Room, which is getting a new disc release this month.
In October 2014, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier had a bit of a problem. Green Room, the follow-up to his micro-budget thriller, Blue Ruin, was nearing the start of shooting, but he still hadn’t managed to cast the role of Darcy – a club owner and leader of a group of rural Neo-Nazis. Most worryingly, as sets for the film were being built, Green Room’s financiers had threatened to withdraw funding if Saulnier couldn’t find a ‘name’ actor.
Fortunately for Saulnier, the script had been sent out to the legendary Patrick Stewart, and despite – or perhaps because of – the less-than-appealing nature of the Darcy character, he agreed to star at the last minute. “He kind of saved the movie,” Saulnier tells us almost a decade on.

When a franchise has established itself as a pop culture favorite for as long as "Star Trek" has -- currently, going on 60 years -- imaginative storytellers truly have no limits when it comes to honoring such history. In 2009, J.J. Abrams went out of his way to make his prequel film "Star Trek" exist in its own alternate universe entirely, ensuring that his new franchise addition could co-exist within the timeline while never once meddling with any of what happened to Spock, Captain Kirk, and all the other heroes of the starship Enterprise. Justin Lin's "Star Trek Beyond" directly incorporated the death of Leonard Nimoy into the plot (along with an end-credits tribute to the late Anton Yelchin), paying homage to an icon in the most respectful way possible. But one of the most heartwarming examples of this tradition comes from a recurring character in "The Original Series" that most...

After years of stops and starts, Paramount is making a step toward returning Star Trek to the big screen. Toby Haynes, who directed episodes of of the Star Wars series Andor, will helm a new feature, with Seth Grahame-Smith writing.
The plot is said to take place decades before the events of 2009’s Star Trek, which J.J. Abrams helmed. Abrams’ Bad Robot will produce the movie, which the studio is describing as an expansion of its Trek universe.
Trek has largely lived in the world of TV and streaming in recent years, with Paramount+ home to a number of shows, including Strange New Worlds, Discovery, the animated Lower Decks and Picard, which wrapped last year.
Star Trek Beyond, the most recent Trek film, hit theaters in 2016 and starred Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, the role he first played in 2009’s Star Trek. Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña,...

Hollywood has never really accepted that you can’t recapture lightning in a bottle. No matter how context-specific a blockbuster’s success was, you can always count on an executive to insist on making a follow-up even if that doesn’t make sense for the story. That being said, sequels aren’t always doomed to failure, and one of the most famous examples of this is James Cameron’s Terminator 2, a film that refused to do the same thing twice and became just as iconic as the original.
Naturally, Hollywood learned all of the wrong lessons from the success of T2, as most of its sequels would be repetitive cash-grabs simply reiterating on the same tired ideas of fate, time travel and robot assassins. The only real exception to this curse would be 2009’s controversial Terminator Salvation, a post-apocalyptic thriller that genuinely expands on the world of its source...

One of the more fantastical elements of J.J. Abrams' 2009 film "Star Trek" is the use of a mysterious, seemingly magical substance called Red Matter.
In the 23rd century, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) used Red Matter to create a black hole in the Romulan star system just as its sun was about to go supernova. The idea was that the black hole would suck up the exploding star like a vacuum cleaner and save the Romulan homeworld. No, the actual astral physics don't many any sense, but this is what they went with.
Spock did suck up the supernova with his black hole, but he was too late to save Romulus. The black hole, it turns out, was also a portal through time, and Spock is sucked in and deposited about a century in the past. Terminator Salvation, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate were all supposed to be the first entry in a new trilogy of Terminator movies. Each time, the trilogy plans had to be scrapped due to disappointing box office. But the Terminator franchise isn’t over yet. Terminator: The Anime Series will be reaching the Netflix streaming service sometime in the near future – and while we look forward to seeing how that’s going to turn out, Terminator Salvation director McG is looking forward to the day when he’ll be able to share his darker cut of the movie.
Speaking with ComicBook.com while doing the press rounds for his new movie Family Switch, which will be available to watch on Netflix later this week, McG said, “We tried hard. On that one, we brought in Jonah Nolan to write it, there was a writers’ strike back then. Brought in Christian Bale,...

Star Trek Nemesis just about marked the death of the franchise. Indeed, the fact that it was a worldwide box-office disaster meant that many felt the series had run out of steam. For the first time in many years, there were no active big-screen franchises or Trek shows running on TV, with the often neglected Star Trek: Enterprise going off the air in 2005. It seemed space operas were out of vogue, with the rise of superhero movies taking Hollywood by storm. Not only was there the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies breaking box office records, but also a little company called Marvel studios decided to start making the own movies, beginning with Iron Man.
But what about Star Trek? For a while, Paramount wouldn’t have been able to produce a Star Trek movie even if they wanted to, with the company’s owner, Viacom,...

There’s something wonderfully nerve-rattling about a “survive the night” horror scenario, whether it’s a handful of strangers trying to fend off crazed zombies in “Night of the Living Dead” or a group of sarcastic Gen Z friends suspecting each other of murder in “Bodies Bodies Bodies.”
Here are some of our favorite entries in this subgenre, where the weapons are improvised, the stakes are life and death and there’s no guarantee anyone will get out alive.
We did not include movies that take place over a few days (like “Battle Royale”) or movies that aren’t streaming right now, like “Ready or Not.”

Actor Josh Brolin was presented with the opportunity to star in one of the later Terminator sequels. But his instincts told him he might not have been a good fit for the feature.
Josh Brolin turned down ‘Terminator Salvation’ because it didn’t feel right Josh Brolin | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic

Pamela Adlon (Better Things, Californication), Evan Handler (Sex and the City, Californication), Jason Beghe (Chicago P.D.) and Daphne Rubin-Vega (In The Heights) have joined the cast of Yale Entertainment’s Bucky F*cking Dent alongside the previously announced David Duchovny, Logan Marshall-Green and Stephanie Beatriz.

Bucky F*cking Dent was produced by Jordan Beckerman, Jordan Yale Levine and Duchovny.
Now in post-production, the film will have its world premiere as a spotlight narrative selection at the 2023 Tribeca Festival this June. CAA is representing the domestic sales; Great Escape is handling the international sales and will be introducing the film to buyers in Cannes.

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
In 1994, the finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation was titled “All Good Things…” and now that ellipsis has been completed, with the inevitable phrase “…must come to an end.” In the series finale of Picard one era of the franchise very clearly comes to an end, while sneakily setting up a very hypothetical next next generation, too. Although the future of Star Trek in the 25th century remains unclear, and the franchise is once again expanding in other directions, it seems that for now, the story of the 1990s era has come to a close.
But the end of an era doesn’t mean the end of excellent callbacks to this golden age of Star Trek shows. Here are the biggest easter eggs, references, and shout-outs in “The Last Generation.”

This Star Trek: Picard article contains spoilers.
In its third season, Star Trek: Picard has been all about voices from the past. Given the show’s title character, most of those voices have unsurprisingly come from the era of The Next Generation. But in the opening minutes of the Picard series finale, we hear a voice that goes back even further into Star Trek history: that of Original Series star Walter Koenig, who voices his character’s offspring, Federation president Anton Chekov.
“Do not approach Earth,” warns President Chekov in a transmission to Starfleet survivors, including the crew of the newly-revived Enterprise-d. “Signal of unknown origin has turned our young against us. They have been assimilated by the Borg. Our fleet has been compromised, and as we speak, our planetary defenses are falling. Sol Station is defending Earth as best it can, but we’re almost out of time. We...

When this third and final season of Picard debuted earlier this year, I wrote that while on the one hand it was shameless fan service, on the other this was exactly what Star Trek fans wanted and needed after the show’s first two years were so disappointing. This article contains spoilers for the finale of "Star Trek: Picard."
The third season of "Star Trek: Picard" has brought back plenty of characters and concepts from previous entries in the "Star Trek" franchise, including the original series, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," "Star Trek: Voyager," and, of course, "Star Trek: The Next Generation." It's been a veritable feast of nostalgia, but one cameo in the series finale felt truly poignant and honored both a beloved character and the men who played him. The episode opens with the newly relaunched Enterprise-d headed toward Earth in an attempt to stop Picard's son Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers) and the Borg from assimilating all of the young people of Earth and taking control of the planet. They already control Starfleet, and things are looking pretty grim. That's when a familiar voice plays over comms and we hear the President of the United Federation...

When the third season of "Star Trek: Picard" began, this old Trekkie declared it to be the best "Star Trek: The Next Generation" movie we never got. This was a bit of a dubious comparison, as the four extant "Next Generation" movies never quite reached the intellectual highs of the TV series on which they were based. "Star Trek: Generations" was weirdly preoccupied with "passing the torch" moments, bending over backward to get Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and James T. Kirk (William Shatner) on screen together. "First Contact" was an enjoyable enough action picture, but it dumbed down a lot of the show's more interesting notions about the Borg, and, in being a full-scale action picture, only served to highlight how ill-suited the NextGen cast was for such a genre.

Each year Hollywood unites around a peculiar tradition as actors, filmmakers, and members of the press gather for a reading of the highly-anticipated Oscar nominations. This list is always met with excitement, but recent years have seen plans for the annual awards ceremony stir up an increasing amount of controversy. Each new rundown of honorees sparks the inevitable discussion of filmmakers and performers overlooked by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the dissection of these "Oscar snubs" becoming the norm rather than the exception.
Academy leaders have attempted to combat these complaints by diversifying the roster of industry voters and expanding the best picture category to allow for up to 10 entries. However, the institution has a long history of ignoring horror movies and performances that should have been nominated, and each year's announcements bring with them increasingly frustrating snubs.

Jennifer Lawrence became one of the biggest names in Hollywood due to starring in a series of blockbusters and acclaimed movies. But she was concerned her newfound fame might change her for the worst after her experiences with the film industry.
However, Jodie Foster showed Lawrence that maybe she wouldn’t lose herself in the future.

For many actors, being famous isn’t everything that it’s cracked up to be. And for Lawrence, fame might also be the one aspect of acting that she doesn’t enjoy. One of the reasons she briefly considered turning down The Hunger Games was because she didn’t want her life changing too much. The potential fame that could’ve come with a mega-franchise was seen as a huge negative for her.

Actor Sharon Stone has sometimes gone to extreme lengths to immerse herself in a movie scene like she did in the feature Casino.
But on the set of the film Alpha Dog, she was pushed a little too far. And her co-star ended up physically paying for it.

Alpha Dog was a movie directed by The Notebook filmmaker Nick Cassavetes. It was loosely based on a real-life crime where a couple of drug dealers plan a kidnapping that soon goes awry. The 2006 feature starred an ensemble cast that included late actor Anton Yelchin, Justin Timberlake, and Sharon Stone. The movie saw Yelchin portraying Zack Mazursky, the victim of the kidnapping. After only two years of being online only, the Sundance Film Festival is again happening in Park City, Utah. As usual, JoBlo is going to be there to check out all of the coolest movies to emerge from the indie scene. I’m excited to get my boots on the ground and watch some movies. While the online edition was fun, nothing beats discovering these movies with an audience. I almost got to attend the festival in person last year, only for a late Covid surge to result in the fest being canceled at the last minute. Nevertheless, the fest is back in full swing this year, with an impressive lineup with a few genre heavy-hitters mixed in among more high-brow fare.
Here are some of the titles we’re most excited to see:

If it's one thing all horror fans understand, it's that every month is a good month for watching scary movies. Sure, we often like to ramp up the on-screen scares come October, but the frights still continue throughout the rest of the year. And while the holiday season brings with it a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, there's also quite a lot that still goes bump in the night.
In honor of the various terrors that occur every December — i.e. every single trip you will take to a shopping mall in the coming weeks — here is a list of the best horror movies available to stream this month. Consider it your holiday gift guide for movies you can watch after the family has gone home and you are left to piece your sanity back together. The holidays may only come around once a year, but terror lasts forever.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" series often feels like the neglected middle child of the Spider-Man film eras, but the pair of films from director Marc Webb are back in the news almost a decade later as Joe Jonas -- of The Jonas Brothers, Dnce, and the recently released "Devotion" fame -- told Variety that he auditioned for the role of Peter Parker in that particular reboot.
Jonas got his start as part of the Disney tween machine through his family band and subsequent appearances in Disney Channel Original Movies like "Camp Rock," but as he got older and left his teen idol roots behind, he's proven himself to be a certifiable acting talent. It was even rumored back in 2010 that he and his brother Kevin Jonas had auditioned for roles in "Captain America: The First Avenger."

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” began its domestic box office run with 28 million in Thursday night preview screenings. That’s above the 25 million preview gross of “Black Panther” four years ago (and the 36 million advance-night showings for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” last spring) — an impressive achievement for a big-budget franchise sequel arriving without both the actor (Chadwick Boseman) and the character (King T’Challa) who headlined its 2018 predecessor.
It’s just the latest case of a tentpole film landing in theaters after the sudden death of one of its stars, following such high-profile examples as 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” 2015’s “Furious 7” and 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond” and 2017’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Unlike “Wakanda Forever,” all four of those films included their deceased actors — though “Furious 7” required extensive retooling to include Paul Walker.

Paramount Pictures has officially pulled Star Trek 4 (working title) from its release schedule, to the shock of probably not a single person in Hollywood or Trek fandom.
No official reason has been given for the film’s removal from its December 22, 2023 berth (per The Hollywood Reporter), but the writing was almost certainly on the wall when director Matt Shakman – who joined the project in July 2021 – departed last month to take the reins of Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated Fantastic Four reboot.
The news leaves the fate of the big screen version of Trek, along with its cast, in limbo – not surprising, considering that the current theatrical cast didn’t even seem to know as late as this past summer that the movie was moving forward. Anne Heche has been interred at Hollywood Forever cemetery, the final resting place for scores of Hollywood legends that still serves as a public gathering place and cultural center.
Heche’s remains were cremated, and were placed in a vault near the cemetery’s lake at the Garden of Legends, multiple sources tell TheWrap. Nearby are the final resting places of Mickey Rooney, Burt Reynolds and Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was killed when Alec Baldwin accidentally fired a live round on the set of “Rust.”
Hollywood Forever was founded in 1899 and is one of the oldest cemeteries in the Los Angeles area. Stars of old, like Rudolph Valentino and Douglas Fairbanks, are buried near more modern figures, like “Star Trek” Anton Yelchin.
The cemetery is home to a popular summer movie-screening series and other cultural events throughout the year.

Terminator: Salvation had so much potential when it hit theaters in 2009. Instead of following the T-800’s story or undoing the bleak ending to Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Salvation boasted a new story that finally gave us the heroic John Connor who has been promised since the first movie in 1984. With writing support from Jonathan Nolan and starring Christian Bale, both of whom had just made the mega-smash The Dark Knight, and co-starring Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese, with then-up-and-coming Sam Worthington as cyborg Marcus Wright, Salvation seemed like the rare prequel that could effectively stand alongside the later films.
So, what went wrong? While Bale might say it has something to do with a production assistant messing up lighting, Salvation director McG recently offered his own thoughts. “We got so close to nailing that thing right,” McG told The Hollywood Reporter. “I got a lot right in...

Photo: Anton Yelchin/Tinseltown/Shutterstock Before he gracefully bowed out of our world, young actor Anton Yelchin left audiences with a treasure of meaningful work as a parting gift. From his early childhood days, his choices of film revealed an inherent artistic taste to storytelling that only served to benefit both his career, and the average Cinephile's insatiable hunger for engaging entertainment. From obscure, smaller films that enjoyed the exclusivity of the independent circuit, to hot blockbusters that heated up the Summertime, Yelchin made sure to always deliver a crisp performance. If he wasn't the life of the film, he was consistently one of the best parts. When remarking on his untimely passing, words like, 'He was just getting started' is common following Yelchin's tragic end. But even with him just getting started, he managed to eclipse some performers entering the twilight of their careers. And if his body of...

It has been six years since “Star Trek” fans have seen the USS Enterprise on the big screen, but they will soon get to see it again as producer JJ Abrams announced at ViacomCBS’ investor presentation that his studio Bad Robot is getting set to shoot the fourth installment in the “Trek” reboot film series.
Matt Shakman, the veteran TV director whose credits include “Game of Thrones” and the hit Marvel series “WandaVision,” will direct the upcoming film with the entire reboot cast in talks to return, including Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock as well as Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Simon Pegg.
“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new...

They’re boldly going back.
Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “Star Trek” stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.
The announcement was made by J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15.
“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so...

One thing about Hollywood I could never stomach: all the damn remakes.
Okay, so that's not totally true, but it was too good of an opportunity to rephrase that great line from "The Lost Boys" in a story about a pending remake of that very movie.
Truth is that there's a surprisingly solid trend of strong genre remakes. "The Blob," "The Fly," and John Carpenter's "The Thing" were all remakes that eclipsed the originals, and we even got a damn good remake of another solid '80s vampire flick a while back when Craig Gillespie remade "Fright Night" with Anton Yelchin and Colin Farrell. Yes, we've seen a...

Exclusive: Gustin Nash, the screenwriter of Amazon Studios’ in-the-works movie Kate Warne, which has Emily Blunt attached to star in the story of the first female Pinkerton Detective, has signed with WME. The agency deal for the scribe comes after Deadline scooped earlier this month that Amazon acquired Nash’s pitch at the end of a six-studio bidding war.
Blunt is also set to produce Kate Warne alongside Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions and Kristina Sorensen. Nash is executive producer on the project, an action adventure take on Warne, whose sleuthing skills in a male-dominated field paved the way for women in law enforcement and forever changed how detective work was done.
Nash’s writing credits include 2007’s Charlie Bartlett for MGM which starred Anton Yelchin, Robert Downey Jr and Kat Dennings, and 2009’s Youth In Revolt directed by Miguel Arteta and starring Michael Cera, Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi and Rooney Mara.

That ain’t teenage spirit you’re smelling. HBO’s Music Box documentary Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage reeks of righteous condemnation, judicial indiscretion, and conspiratorial obfuscation. But it’s okay. This is a disaster film masquerading as a documentary, and the found footage makes it all pay off. Director Garrett Price personally opens the film in the voiceover, explaining how the 1999 celebration itself was written to be a comedy, but “played out much more like a horror film.”
Music festivals have come to represent generations. The original Woodstock: an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music concert in the summer of 1969 brought half a million people together with the artists who spoke for and to them in a communal love bond. The organizers lost money, the capacity was underestimated, but the audience came together to share what they had to make the weekend legendary. In December that year, the...
