As production continues on the second season of HBO's adaptation of best-selling survival horror video game, The Last of Us, we have another late casting addition in the form of an Academy Award-nominated actor.
Variety (via GameFragger.com) reports that Jeffrey Wright has signed on to play Isaac Dixon, the character he provided the voice for in The Last of Us Part II game.
This take on Isaac is described as “the quietly powerful leader of a large militia group who sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.”
In the game, Isaac leads the Washington Liberation Front (Wlf), who are engaged in a long-running war against the fanatical Seraphites (Scars). Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) is his most trusted and valued soldier, but she soon begins to question his ruthless and uncompromising tactics.

It’s been a few years since Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter first announced The Abandons, but the Western series has finally started shooting. Netflix announced the start of production of the first season of The Abandons in Calgary, with an official cast photo seen above.
The official logline for The Abandons reads: “As a group of diverse, outlier families pursue their Manifest Destiny in 1850s Oregon, a corrupt force of wealth and power, coveting their land, tries to force them out. These abandoned souls, the kind of lost souls living on the fringe of society, unite their tribes to form a family and fight back. In this bloody process, ‘justice’ is stretched beyond the boundaries of the law. The Abandons will explore that fine line between survival and law, the consequences of violence, and the corrosive power of secrets, as this family fights to keep their land.“

O’Hara is the first guest star to be announced after HBO made several major additions to the cast for the second installment of the post-apocalyptic drama based on the video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation. HBO recently cast Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, and Young Mazino as Jesse.
The series has become somewhat of a guest star showcase, as Season 1 featured the likes of Nick Offerman, Storm Reid and Murray Bartlett among its guest stars. During the 2022 Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies, two vastly different age records were broken as the acting victors accepted their prizes. First, 28-year-old Lee Yoo-mi (“Squid Game”) supplanted Samira Wiley as the youngest recipient of either drama guest award, and then Jean Smart (70) improved upon her own oldest comedy actress winner record by clinching a second consecutive trophy for “Hacks.” With one age record having already been smashed at last weekend’s Creative Arts Awards, five more are up for grabs heading into the big primetime show.
Firstly, congratulations are in order for newly crowned Best Drama Guest Actress champ Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”), who, at 20, went from being her category’s third youngest nominee to its youngest winner. In fact, she is the all-time youngest recipient of any guest acting Emmy, also taking that distinction from Lee, who in turn usurped Justin Timberlake. Two more “The Last of Us...

“The Last of Us” has found its Dina, with Isabela Merced joining Season 2 of the hit HBO series.
“Dina is warm, brilliant, wild, funny, moral, dangerous and instantly lovable,” said series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. “You can search forever for an actor who effortlessly embodies all of those things, or you can find Isabela Merced right away. We couldn’t be prouder to have her join our family.”
Merced is now the third new cast member announced in recent days, joining Kaitlyn Dever as well as “Beef” star Young Mazino.
Dina is described as “a free-wheeling spirit whose devotion to Ellie will be tested by the brutality of the world they inhabit.”

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

Young Mazino, a breakout star of Netflix’s “Beef,” has been cast in HBO’s “The Last of Us” Season 2. He’ll play Jesse, a character described as a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own — sometimes at terrible cost. Jesse is expected to be a main role in the second season.
News of Mazino’s casting comes a day after Kaitlyn Dever was cast as fan-favorite character Abby. Her character is a co-lead of Naughty Dog video game “The Last of Us Part II.”
Ramsey and co-lead Pedro Pascal are returning for the hit show’s second season. Gabriel Luna, who plays Tommy, has teased a return and whose character plays a bigger role in the game.
Production on “The Last of Us” Season 2 is set to begin in February, with filming on the critically revered and Daytime Emmy-winning show previously postponed due to the since-ended strikes.

Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick) has joined HBO’s breakout hit The Last of Us. She is one three major cast additions for the upcoming second season of the post-apocalyptic drama, based on the video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation. Dever will play the most prominent new Season 2 character, Abby, joining series’ stars Pedro Pascal, who plays Joel, and Bella Ramsey, who is Ellie.
When it was revealed that The Last of Us‘ second season will be based on the 2020 The Last of Us Part II, fans’ attention immediately focused on Abby, one of the game’s two playable central characters alongside Ellie.
Dever’s name emerged as the frontrunner for the role soon after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike in November. She eventually closed a deal with HBO, which is co-producing the series with Sony Pictures Television.

Saturday night at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, Nick Offerman (“The Last of Us”) won the trophy for Best Drama Guest Actor. He plays Bill on the HBO drama series, and this marks his first career victory (despite all those heralded years on “Parks and Recreation”) with the Television Academy. He was previously nominated three times for hosting the reality program “Making It.”
After being delayed since September due to the writers’ strike and actors’ strike, the Creative Arts Emmys for scripted fare finally took place on Saturday, January 6, with more awards for unscripted programs being doled out on Sunday, January 7. When the nominations for the 1959 Primetime Emmys were revealed, 13-year-old supporting candidate Johnny Crawford (“The Rifleman”) became the youngest male acting contender in TV academy history and then retained the title for the next six and a half decades. After so many years of his record appearing to be unbreakable, it was finally shattered this summer by Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Keivonn Montreal Woodard, who turned 10 this February. His historic bid for HBO’s “The Last of Us” makes him not only a credit to child actors but also to deaf performers, as no male one had ever earned Emmy recognition before.
Woodard appears in two first-season episodes of “The Last of Us” as Sam Burrell, a survivor of both leukemia and a pandemic-induced apocalypse who lives under the guardianship of his adult brother, Henry (Lamar Johnson). Nick Offerman has been a bit of an Emmys bridesmaid so far, as the versatile actor has been nominated three times in his career but failed to turn any of them into cold, hard wins he can put on his shelf. This year, he earned his fourth nomination — and, surprisingly, his first one as an actor. He was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for HBO’s hugely successful video-game adaptation “The Last of Us.”
In the show, Offerman appears as Bill in episode three — “Long, Long Time.” Perhaps the most emotional episode of the entire series, Offerman is front and center of the drama and truly gets a chance to show off his acting chops. Bill lives a solitary life on his compound when the epidemic breaks out. But his uneasy quiet is disturbed when Murray Bartlett‘s Frank stumbles upon the land. Bill is reluctant to help the...

After earning the first Emmy nomination of his career last year for his hilariously shrewd character Stewy on “Succession,” Arian Moayed has nabbed his second bid for Drama Guest Actor for the final season of the acclaimed HBO series. The actor has been a staple member of the ensemble for all four seasons, an old friend of Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) who has been both an ally and rival as he’s gone from trying to take over the company with other backers to one of its most influential board members.
Moayed is once again nominated alongside his fellow “Succession” guest star James Cromwell. Aside from the two of them, the category is made up of performers from “The Last of Us”: Murray Bartlett, Lamar Johnson, Nick Offerman, and Keivonn Montreal Woodard.

Just one year after HBO’s “Succession” broke new ground as the first drama series to ever receive four male guest acting Emmy nominations at once, the same network’s “The Last of Us” has matched the impressive feat. Included among those currently recognized for their special appearances on the post-apocalyptic video game adaptation is Lamar Johnson, who has built an extensive acting resume over the past 15 years. Having just turned 29 in July, he ranks as the fourth youngest Best Drama Guest Actor nominee ever and has a shot at becoming the category’s all-time youngest victor.
Johnson’s very first Emmy notice comes for his portrayal of Henry Burrell, a one-time government informant attempting to evade capture by ruthless resistance leader Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey). The actor’s episode submission, “Endure and Survive,” shows that Henry never has much time to dwell on his dire situation as an apocalypse survivor...

Murray Bartlett is having a very special moment. After winning his first Emmy last year, the actor has followed up that victory with not one but two nominations this year as he looks to continue his hot streak. One of those bids this year is for Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for “Welcome to Chippendales,” while his second comes for HBO’s drama “The Last of Us,” which amassed a whopping 25 Emmy bids. Specifically, Bartlett was nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor for his emotional role as Frank in episode three of the show.
That episode, titled “Long, Long Time,” was touted as one of the very best in the entire series and was certainly the most heartbreaking. Kathleen Coghlan may have met her demise in the first season of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” but the woman who plays her, Melanie Lynskey, is stronger than ever at the Emmys. After landing her long-overdue first nomination last year, for her lead performance on the Showtime hit “Yellowjackets,” the New Zealander added not one, but two bids to her tally this past July, including one for her sinister guest turn on “The Last of Us.”

A single mother struggles to protect her two very different sons, growing up in Toronto, in Clement Virgo’s deeply moving film
This critically feted and broodingly touching Canadian drama from writer-director Clement Virgo focuses on two siblings, Francis and Michael, brilliantly played by Aaron Pierre and Lamar Johnson. Yet despite the title and the poster that both foreground the two male leads, the film could equally have been called Mother (as opposed to mother!), with Marsha Stephanie Blake dominating the screen as the Jamaican-Canadian matriarch Ruth, struggling to hold and protect her sons. Indeed, all of Brother’s most powerfully affecting moments centre on Ruth’s love and loss, with her children the source of her joy and sadness.
We first meet Francis and Michael as teenagers at the foot of a gigantic power pylon, an electrical crackle buzzing in the bright rural air. The older, more adventurous Francis...

A sumptuously filmed adaptation of David Chariandy’s novel tackles heavy-duty issues such as police brutality, racism and closeted desire with a relatively light touch
“Danger: High Voltage” are among the first words seen on screen in writer-director Clement Virgo’s adaptation of David Chariandy’s 2017 novel. It begins with wannabe DJ/producer Francis (Aaron Pierre) pressuring his younger sibling Michael (Lamar Johnson) to join him in scaling a sinisterly buzzing pylon in their home town of Scarborough, Ontario. The voltage stays at that level throughout much of Brother, which ticks off several films’ worth of heavy-duty subjects – police brutality, racism, the immigrant experience, gang violence, closeted desire, dementia, cancer – and only occasionally verges on the ponderous.
The question that haunts the film is: what made Francis climb that day? After the opening scene, the action shifts forward a decade to find Michael, his old flame Aisha (Kiana Madeira...
