Former Florida governor and first-term Senator Rick Scott announced Wednesday that he is gunning to replace Mitch McConnell as Senate Republican leader after trying and failing to do so following the 2022 midterm election.
“I believe that our voters want us to use this leadership election to make a choice to upend the status quo in Washington,” Scott wrote in a letter to his Republican colleagues, the Wall Street Journal reported. “If you also believe this to be true and want a leader dedicated to that principle, I would be honored...

Pre-play ads on so-called ‘ad-free’ streaming plans are increasingly common, and we’ll take a look at which streamers are forcing viewers to sit through them.
The one-time idealistic belief that streaming would be ad-free forever has long since been shattered. Streamers are not only spinning up ad-supported plans to tempt price-sensitive customers, they are even going to lengths like discontinuing low-priced ad-free plans and cracking down on account sharing to entice people to opt for ad-supported plans over ad-free versions. Streaming providers simply can’t ignore the revenue available through advertising, and ads have become such necessary income generators that they’ve even seeped onto ad-free plans. The Streamable has observed this trend and wants to help viewers who are shopping for ad-free streaming plans know which services actually provide streaming without commercials.
Key Details: Many ad-free streaming tiers force viewers to sit through an ad for other content available on that service.

Ayo Edebiri ruled decisively on the issues that matter most to Americans — taking concert videos on their phone, proper Letterboxd and Instagram comment decorum, and taking food off other peoples’ plates — in a new “Petty Disputes” video for Vanity Fair.
For the clip, the actress was presented with several cases, in which plaintiffs brought charges of socially dubious behavior against defendants, who did their best to justify their actions. Edebiri was then left to pass judgement, a task she was more than qualified for because, as she quipped, she spent...

For a biopic about Donald Trump, The Apprentice is surprisingly concerned with other things. The film has exactly what you might expect and somehow a curiosity around every corner, a familiar historical intrigue firmly planted in a tonal shock. The shock comes from its subtlety and perspective, the latter of which has a unique bent for a film about an ex-President debuting in an election year that spotlights his third campaign.
As you can imagine, there’s no shortage of American directors looking to cinematically take down Trump. But, for now, none of them get to. At least not as blatantly as Ali Abbasi, the international director who won the job to tell the story of the debased mogul from the early ’70s to the mid-80s.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have concluded their three-day tour of Nigeria to champion Invictus Games and are now back in the US.
With everything that’s been going on with the couple – via the launch of American Riviera Orchard, Harry’s Netflix Polo docuseries and Meghan’s cooking show – experts are beginning to question their relevancy in the US.
Who’s interested to see a Prince play Polo or watch a Duchess cook?
Americans Have Reportedly Lost Interest In the Sussexes For This Reason
Harry and Meghan’s move to the US in 2020 was rife with controversies, yes, but not enough to rival the ones they created by attacking the royal family through as many media platforms as they could lay their hands on – I’m talking books, podcasts, talkshows, interviews, documentaries and so on and so forth.

Just yesterday, we reported how Kevin Costner is struggling to find someone who will help him finance the third and fourth parts of his planned Western epic – Horizon. Costner is an acclaimed filmmaker and Oscar winner who has left us with many memorable roles, but the guy likes the Western genre, both as an actor and as a director. After the success of Yellowstone, Costner embarked on an epic journey to explain how the Americans colonized the West, planning to make a four-part movie epic. The first two parts will be released in cinemas this year, with the first film premiering in Cannes only recently.
Costner has invested a lot of his own money into financing the projects and is now looking for studios who are willing to give money to him to finish the project. But, based on the first critics’ reviews, Costner won’t have much luck in his endeavor,...

The tension and stakes have indeed been turned up to max volume in The Veil Season 1 Episode 5.
It took about five episodes to get there, but audiences are finally feeling things come to a head in the latest episode.
Any hope for Imogen and Adilah's budding friendship is just about dashed without the episode starting with Adilah taking off while Imogen slept.
We can't blame her, though. Things took a turn for the very real and dangerous at the end of The Veil Season 1 Episode 4 when the women came under fire after Imogen found Adilah and Emir chit-chatting.
It wasn't clear who exactly was doing the shooting as it could've easily been either the French or American intelligence agencies.
Since neither tried to apprehend Imogen or Adilah at the women's apartment, it's safe to say the assailants are likely terrorists or at least terrorist associates.
As if things weren't dire enough with Adilah sneaking out,...

If he could turn back time, there’s a good chance that he would. There’s heavy speculation on social media that Joe Biden apparently regrets not picking Michelle Obama to be his Vice President over Kamala Harris.
Because if he were to put Michelle Obama on the ticket, there’s no doubt that Joe Biden would be enjoying much more success and popularity today than he has with Kamala Harris.
That, and there’s a very good chance that he would gain the support and the votes that he needs in order to beat Donald Trump in November. Keep reading below for everything you need to know.
Did Joe Biden Make A Mistake With Michelle Obama?
Did Joe Biden make a mistake with Michelle Obama? That’s what many fans and critics alike want to know. Unfortunately for the president, he’s not doing very well in the polls right now.

It is said that the grand metaphor to describe the United States is a melting pot, where cultures from all over the world that have gathered in a shared space form a gumbo where their flavors merge, the whole supplanting the constituent parts.

Ivan F. Boesky, the disgraced 1980s financier who inspired the cutthroat corporate raider Gordon Gekko character of Oliver Stone’s 1987 film Wall Street, died in his sleep today at his home in San Diego. He was 87.
His death was announced to The New York Times by his daughter Marianne Boesky.
Even before Michael Douglas’ indelible portrayal of Gekko made “Greed Is Good” a mantra of the Reagan Era, Boesky had already become a Wall Street evangelist of amoral, me-first philosophy. According to The Times, Boesky said in a 1986 commencement speech at the University of California, Berkeley, “Greed is all right, by the way. I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself.” (Boesky would later say he didn’t recall making the statement.)
By the end of the decade, however, Boesky, once ranked among the richest Americans, would become a prison inmate: Implicated in...

Oh you don’t either? Well, apparently, it’s National Streaming Day. And this isn’t just any National Streaming Day — it’s the 10th anniversary of the holiday, first declared by Roku in 2014. Break out the champagne — or at least have a few brewskis in Roku City.
More than just the screensaver’s majestic skyline has changed in the past decade. Occupying the penthouse of the largest skyscraper in all of streaming is Netflix, which currently has about 270 million global paid subscribers; 10 years ago the tally was 46 million subs, and the platform had just released “House of Cards” Season 2. Do you think Kevin Spacey’s life has changed at all since then?
On May 20, 2014, Netflix still did DVDs (in addition to streaming), it swore off ads, and would not touch live sports. Well, the DVDs have since been recycled,...

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. received wildly mixed feedback on social media for his proposal to put the United States budget on blockchain to make government spending more transparent.
“I’m gonna put the entire U.S. budget on blockchain,” Kennedy declared during a campaign rally in Michigan. “Every American can look at every budget item in the entire budget, anytime they want, 24 hours a day. We’re gonna have 300 million eyeballs on our budget. And if somebody is spending $16,000 for a toilet seat, everybody’s gonna know about it.”
A blockchain is a ledger of transactions used with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Many governments have implemented blockchain technology worldwide.
His idea received a range of reactions from users on X.

An otherwise rote and unsurprising Frankenstein story about a madman who loses control of the monster he’s created, Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice” does exactly one thing that no other movie ever has before or will again: It makes you feel the smallest possible mote of sympathy for Roy Cohn. That isn’t a compliment, necessarily, but it is some kind of testament to the talent of the actor who plays him, and also a very different kind of testament to the unparalleled soullessness of the future world leader who Cohn helped to invent.
When this scuzzy little drama first begins in the late 1970s, it’s Sebastian Stan’s Donald J. Trump — then an insecure Manhattan nepo baby who fumbles around the city in search of his slumlord father’s non-existent affection — whose receding humanity is still visible enough to inspire the same tender pity once evoked by Michael Corleone,...

Katy Perry said her final goodbye to American Idol during the latest season’s finale on May 19. Perry was cast as a judge alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie back in 2018 when it transitioned from Fox to ABC. Together, the three of them remained judges for seven years. Perry is the first of the three to move on.
Perry wants to return to the stage herself, and she cemented her icon status once more during the American Idol grand finale, where she sang her 2020 song “What Makes a Woman” alongside third place winner Jack Blocker.

Luis Ignacio Lula da Silva, three times president of Brazil, was born in 1945. He grew up poor in Sao Paulo and left school early to help support his family. Having trained as a lathe operator, he reached a milestone when he became the first member of his family to earn more than the minimum wage. Initially reluctant to get involved in politics, he was president of the steelworkers’ union by the time he was 30, leading a strike that achieved better wages that he saw were soon soaked up by a rise in rents. “It was time for workers to think about ruling their own country,” he says in voice-over in Oliver Stone and Rob Wilson’s documentary, simply called Lula.

Oliver Stone is in Cannes today for a Special Screening of Lula, a documentary he co-directed with Rob Wilson about the unbelievable comeback of Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva. The film chronicles his extraordinary journey in 2022 to regain the Brazilian presidency after spending 19 months in prison. This happened after a hacker exposed a conspiracy meant to take down the labor leader in a corruption scandal that tied back to Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and the most powerful judge in the country. It’s a story you have to see to believe.
Here, Stone discusses his film, and how the four-time Oscar winner hopes to mount one final major drama after a career spanning Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Wall Street, JFK, Natural Born Killers and so many others. He also revisits his position on Vladimir Putin, whom he interviewed extensively several years ago, in light of...

Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump, has been slammed on social media for declaring that presidential debates have always been “rigged” in President Joe Biden’s favor.
Early on May 15, Biden and Trump agreed to participate in a presidential debate on CNN on June 27 and a second debate on ABC on September 10.
Lara said during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity that “the scales have always been tipped against Donald Trump.”
Hannity condemned the forthcoming debates. Trump had said that he was willing to debate Biden under any conditions. The host demanded “no notes” and “no teleprompters.”
Despite this, Lara hinted that Trump is ready to take on his opponent.
“And this year more than ever, with all the lawfare, with all we’ve seen against him — in some crazy way, Sean, they’ve actually prepared him for this moment because he’s not afraid...

Call it a cynical copy of The Traitors all you like, but The Fortune Hotel makes for entertaining reality game fluff. In it, couples stay in a luxury resort in the Caribbean where each day they must compete in a physical challenge and an indoor “room service” challenge to win better odds in the game of pass-the-parcel that is part of the elimination process in the Lady Luck Bar. Information is power, allegiances are key and if you’re good in a dinghy you’ve got an advantage.

Alfonso Ribeiro is going to keep on bringing the funny into the homes of Americans across the country. The America’s Funniest Home Videos host, now in his ninth season, will close out the longest-running primetime entertainment program’s 34th season on May 19. “We have our grand prize finale, which is a fun episode because we take the top two biggest money winners of the season, and they go up against each other to see which is the best video of the year,” Ribeiro told TV Insider during a recent visit to TV Insider’s studio. The show has already been renewed for Season 35, which will mark Ribeiro’s tenth season as host. “It’s such an honor, first, to be a part of that legacy. To be ABC’s longest-running primetime show is an honor. Thirty-five years this show will have been on after we get into next season is a really long time.

Hollywood actors had barely inked a new labor deal with major studios and streamers last November when the lights in Ontario film studios flickered on and local talent and technical crews eyed a quick return to work on American shoots.
But the homecoming for Hollywood after the grueling SAG-AFTRA strike has hardly gone as envisioned in the Canadian province, which is known for doubling for U.S. locales such as New York, Boston, and Georgia. According to Ontario production insiders, the province that once defied gravity as a booming production hub for Hollywood has come back down to earth, with production slower than expected and lower budgets on projects that are filming there.
“It’s been a slower ramp-up in business than most anticipated. But we’re starting to see a pretty good increase in business, especially in the past few weeks,” says Garin Josey, chief operating officer of Sunbelt Rentals Film & TV,...

“It’s been a slower ramp-up in business than most anticipated. But we’re starting to see a pretty good increase in business, especially in the past few weeks,” says Garin Josey, chief operating officer of Sunbelt Rentals Film & TV,...

Steven Spielberg used a filming technique he hadn’t applied since E.T. to shoot the classic film Saving Private Ryan. But he didn’t expect the demoralizing effect that would have on the film.

Spielberg already knew he was going to direct a world war two movie before he did Saving Private Ryan. He just didn’t know what movie that was gonna be before the Tom Hanks war film. He was soon sent the film’s script by a screenwriter, and found the war movie he wanted to do.
“As a matter of fact, it was the only time in my several decades of having an agent that they actually gave me a screenplay that I wound up directing,” he once told the DGA.

The NFL has responded to Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College, in which he condemned abortion, euthanasia, IVF, surrogacy and the LGBTQ community. He also denounced the “diabolical lies told to women,” suggesting that enforcing traditional gender roles is the better route.
“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” Jonathan Beane, the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer said in a statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”
During his 20-minute speech, Butker said to graduating women, “How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may...

Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini’s artfully crafted movies, which include such works as Stop the Pounding Heart, The Other Side and What You Gonna Do When the World’s on Fire?, have always sat in a murky gray zone separating fiction from documentary.
Nonprofessional actors play themselves, or versions of themselves, in narratives that seem to have been crafted out of their own lives. And while the locations are always real places, with an emphasis on swaths of the American South — as his name suggests, Minervini is Italian, but he’s lived in the U.S. since 2000 — the director transforms them into sublime backdrops for his gritty tales of poverty and abandon.
His latest film, The Damned, is not technically a documentary: It’s set in 1862 at the height of the Civil War and follows a pack of Union soldiers treacherously exploring unmapped territories in the West. And yet, if...

Missed Wednesday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
Master Debaters?
With the 2024 presidential election to determine whether 51 percent of Americans think America should continue as a democracy a mere six months away, it was inevitable that the political discourse would turn to the debates. That, even though one candidate is currently being tried on felony charges that he engaged in business crimes to defraud the last electorate and might be in prison. Yes, President Joe Biden even issued the invitation to Donald Trump in the most Dark Brandon manner possible, challenging his rival to a Wednesday debate because he knows Trump’s trial takes that day off. As Stephen Colbert noted in a specially constructed “Damn Cam” reaction shot, “Damnnnn.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) criticized the prosecutors in Donald Trump’s New York hush money trial for “disrespecting” the former president.
On May 13, Tuberville delivered a statement outside of the Manhattan courthouse in which he condemned the case’s prosecutors.
“First of all, I’m disappointed in the courtroom,” he shared. “I’m hearing, ‘Mr. Trump,’ ‘Mr. Trump.’ He is former President Trump. Give him some respect. I mean, that’s what that place is in there. It’s no respect.”
“Here’s what I’m seeing, too,” the Alabama GOP senator mentioned. “It is depressing. That courtroom is depressing. This is New York City, the icon of our country. And we got a courtroom that’s the most depressing thing I’ve ever been in.”
“The mental anguish is trying to be pushed on Republican candidate for the president of the United States this year,” he claimed. “That’s all this is.

One person who was not happy to hear President Joe Biden and Donald Trump agreed to debate each other? Independent presidential candidate and brain worm conqueror Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Shortly after news of the debates broke Wednesday, Kennedy took to X/Twitter to claim the two most recent presidents were “colluding to lock America into a head-to-head match-up that 80% say they do not want.”
“They are trying to exclude me from their debate because they are afraid I would win,” Kennedy said. “Keeping viable candidates off the debate stage undermines democracy.

Reader, you have been lied to! Film history is littered with unfairly maligned classics, whether critics were too eager to review the making of rather than the finished product, or they suffered from underwhelming ad campaigns or general disinterest. Let’s revise our takes on some of these films from wrongheaded to the correct opinion.
In 1972, Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Coppola, and William Friedkin were three of the hottest directors in Hollywood thanks to finding the sweet spot between art and box office with “The Last Picture Show,” “The Godfather,” and “The French Connection,” respectively. With their newfound clout, the young auteurs formed The Directors Company, a partnership based at Paramount, where they were given complete creative freedom to make anything they wanted as long as they worked within modest budgets. A politician was cringy and tone-deaf — what a shock! On Tuesday (May 14th), United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken hopped on stage at a bar in Kyiv, Ukraine, to cover the Neil Young classic “Rockin’ in the Free World,” surprising Americans, Ukrainians, and, reportedly, the band.
As reported by The Guardian, the band Blinken joined at the Barman Dictat bar, 19.99, were initially told they would be performing the song with Neil Young himself. It wasn’t until just before they were set to play that they found out the special guest was, in reality, Blinken.
“Your soldiers, your citizens — particularly in the north-east, in Kharkiv — are suffering tremendously,” Blinken said prior to launching into the song. “But they need to know, you need to know, the United States is with you, so much of the world is with you, and they’re fighting not just for a free Ukraine,...

Roberto Rossellini’s 1945 neorealist drama is unsparing in its depiction of the heavy price of both resistance and collaboration with the Nazi occupation
Roberto Rossellini’s 1945 film is a blazingly urgent and painful bulletin from the frontline of Italy’s historical agony: the Axis power that had belatedly turned against the Mussolini fascists only to be humiliatingly occupied by Nazi Germany on whose orders the dictator was reinstalled in the northern Salò puppet state, resplendent in contemptible impotence and pathos, with Rome at its defeated and compromised centre. It was a film that used the so-recently-devastated real streets and people of Rome on location for a project on which Rossellini started script work well before the end of the war, building on ideas by screenwriter Sergio Amidei with dialogue contribution by the young Federico Fellini.

The only person who believed in David Bowie’s vision of “Young Americans” more than Bowie himself was David Sanborn. The saxophonist, who was trained in jazz, had broken into the pop world as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and by guesting on Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book. Sanborn, who died Sunday, was in his late 20s when he linked up with Bowie for the Diamond Dogs Tour — he’s featured on the David Live double-album — and joined him in the studio for the recording of Bowie...

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival may be lighter on glitz and glamour than in years past, but that means arthouse and international fare from emerging and established filmmakers will get a chance to shine. Still, at least two American auteurs, Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Paul Schrader, have films in the main competition for the first time in decades. David Cronenberg (“The Shrouds”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”) are also back at the festival, with both making personal stories in their own way: Cronenberg, here, reckons with grief over the death of his wife seven years ago, while Lanthimos appears to retreat back into “Dogtooth” territory in a film that’s almost a rebuke of the global success he’s acquired with “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”
Sean Baker, Andrea Arnold, Ali Abbasi, Jia Zhangke, Karim Aïnouz, and Paolo Sorrentino are also back at Cannes this year with new films in the competition.

It's safe to say that the wheels on Imogen and Adilah's tenuous friendship are just about ready to fall off in The Veil Season 1 Episode 4.
However, the show finally delivered some long-awaited action that was previewed in the series' initial trailer. While it was expected that the show would need to lay some groundwork and world-building, it was a surprise that it would take four episodes to get to some real action.
That being said, it has been nice to see the bond between Imogen and Adilah grow, even though it's apparent that theirs is a fate destined for far more rockier times.
At this point, it's tough to determine where everyone's loyalties lie. While everyone is undoubtedly working to stop whatever terrorist attack is underway, it seems more like each intelligence branch is simply trying to outdo the other.

90 Day Fiance Michael Ilesanmi Caught Partying With Mystery Woman?
Michael Ilesanmi and Angela Deem never had a perfect relationship. They argued about everything from money to cheating and then some. A study from Comcast shows how viewers are finding new television content in the age of peak choice.
Times have changed since the days when TVs had actual channel dials. If you wanted something to watch, you flipped on your set and switched between the five or six channels your rabbit-ears antenna picked up, then settled on a title or turned it off. Now, viewers have thousands of programming choices between TV channels and on-demand streaming services, and a new survey from Comcast has details regarding just how difficult those choices have become.
Key Details: Comcast found that more than 60% of American audiences search for six minutes or more for a new show or movie. Seeing a promotional ad for a program increases its tune-in rate by 228%. Over 50% of Americans say they’ve watched a show or movie after finding it on their smart TV home screen.

Fox has given a series order to “Going Dutch,” a comedy series starring and executive produced by Denis Leary.
Per the official description, the single-camera series “centers on an arrogant loudmouth U.S. Army Colonel, who after an epically unfiltered rant, is reassigned to the Netherlands, where he is punished with a command position at the least important army base in the world.
