Abbott Elementary isn’t going anywhere.
The comedy series has been renewed for Season 4 at ABC, as announced by Willard R. Abbott Elementary’s own Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) during Disney’s Television Critics Association Press Tour.

“Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-award-winning sitcom created by Quinta Brunson, has returned for its third season, and the series remains just as witty and fun as it’s always been. However, the mega-sized opener titled “Career Day Part 1 & 2” suggests the comedy is ready to tackle one of the most significant issues facing the public education system in America – teacher burnout.
In previous seasons, audiences have witnessed the Abbott teachers bend and twist themselves in knots to get adequate resources while dealing with a self-centered and inept (though hilarious) principal, Ava Coleman (Janelle James). Veteran educators Barbara Howard (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa Schemmenti (Lisa Ann Walter), now decades in to the profession, have mastered the art of delivering with less. Meanwhile, Janine Teagues (Brunson) and Jacob Hill’s (Chris Perfetti) naïveté and love of educating have enabled them to imagine a future for Abbott students that likely won’t come to fruition.

This story about Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter, Tyler James Williams and “Abbott Elementary” first appeared in the Comedy Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
If Quinta Brunson is the heart of “Abbott Elementary,” the Emmy-winning ABC comedy she exec-produces, writes and stars in, the show’s supporting cast is its soul. Set in a struggling Philadelphia public school, the series has been praised for its realistic depiction of America’s education system, while also finding humor and hope hiding in plain sight.

In October 2022 my colleague Ray Richmond called “Abbott Elementary,” “perhaps the finest comedy on the small screen, period.” As the second season of the Emmy-winning series winds down, it’s clear that Chris Perfetti has become an essential reason for the show’s critical and ratings success. His performance as naive and overly enthusiastic history teacher Jacob Hill will hopefully earn a gold star from Emmy voters.
SEE2023 SAG Awards: ‘The White Lotus: Sicily,’ ‘Abbott Elementary’ are big winners
As one of the few white teachers in a predominantly Black school, Jacob can be a little much. He’s eager, nosy and occasionally goes overboard to make his presence known. He works hard –sometimes too hard — to make sure that his students and colleagues like him, which has led more than a few of the show’s now famous side-eyes directed to the camera.

Abbott Elementary is consistently a solid laugh-out-loud thirty minutes of comedy.
Abbott Elementary Season 2 Episode 13 gave the audience precisely what they wanted.
We saw Principal Ava Coleman scamming and being vain. We saw Mr. Jacob Hill and Mr. Johnson being zany and bizarre. We saw Mrs. Barbara Howard being prim, proper, and pious.
These elements of the show make it a joy to watch and this week was no exception!
First thing first, this episode gave the fans what they needed regarding confirmation of Gregory's feelings for Janine.
As Janine was courted and wooed by his close friend, Maurice, we saw Jealousy rear his ugly head.
The ordinarily level-headed Mr. Eddie could not keep his feelings to himself as he listened to his co-workers supporting Janine in preparation for her date with Maurice.
He was visibly annoyed when they all kept calling him the uber-familiar moniker of "Mo," as though...

Is it too soon to pick the best episodes of “Abbott Elementary,” which has been on the air for just over a year? It wasn’t too soon to put it on every end of year list IndieWire put together, so we say no.
On December 7, 2021, ABC premiered the pilot of Quinta Brunson’s elementary school mockumentary, about a spirited and underfunded Philadelphia public school. Brunson stars as second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, a second-year teacher yet to be worn down by the administration. If you're not watching "Abbott Elementary" yet, the ABC sitcom deserves a spot at the tippy top of your watchlist. Created by comedian Quinta Brunson, who stars as incessantly optimistic second-grade teacher Janine Teagues, the record-smashing mockumentary series follows the lives of educators working at a fictional Philadelphia public school. Its laugh-out-loud-funny moments are played out by an all-star ensemble cast that includes Tyler James Williams, Janelle James (Ava Coleman), Lisa Ann Walter, Sheryl Lee Ralph (Barbara Howard), Chris Perfetti (Jacob Hill), and William Stanford Davis (Mr. Johnson).
Although some of the characters may occasionally butt heads, they're still a big, happy family, and the actors have a similarly tight bond off set. Brunson worked with both Williams and Lee Ralph in the past on HBO's "A Black Lady Sketch Show," which explains their seamless onscreen chemistry. Williams previously opened up to Popsugar about reuniting with Brunson for the project,...

“Abbott Elementary” is on a roll. After picking up three trophies at the Golden Globes on Tuesday — including best TV comedy — the series has officially been renewed for its third season at ABC. The news was announced by Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, at the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2023 press tour on Wednesday.
Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary” takes place in a Philadelphia public school and focuses on a group of educators — with different levels of experience and optimism, but all with the determination to help their students. Brunson plays eager but naive second grade teacher Janine Teagues, and the cast also includes Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson.

Lisa Ann Walter is busy cooking dinner as we talk on the phone.
“Hang on one second — I wanna flip my rigatoni into the pot, and I don’t wanna talk over it!” the “Abbott Elementary” actor laughs in the middle of answering a question. “I’m having people over from the cast tomorrow, and some of the crew. Quinta, if she gets back in time from New York, will come over, and I promised her meatballs. Baked pasta, meatballs and sausage.”
Titled “The Principal’s Office,” Season 2 Episode 4 of “Abbott Elementary” sees her character, Melissa Schemmenti, invite Janine (series creator Quinta Brunson) over for a cooking lesson. Together, they cook an Italian meal, and Walter is aware of the irony that she’s in an interview about the episode while doing the same. Moments like this have actually caused her to adjust her approach as an actor.

We all have a past — and in Wednesday’s installment of the A+ comedy Abbott Elementary (which won two Emmy awards last month), we find out what makes easily rattled history teacher Jacob Hill (Chris Perfetti) tick when a group called “The Story Samurais” arrives. Brought in to entertain the Philadelphia school’s student body, the Samurais are a traveling troupe that improvises plays based on the kids’ ideas. They also hold a special place in Jacob’s heart, since it’s revealed early in the episode that he is, as Perfetti explains, “a revered alum.” However, since “most things Jacob is [excited] about are duds,” both Abbott’s students and Jacob’s colleagues are unimpressed by the prospect of the group visiting. Needless to say, the sensitive Jacob takes the disdain personally and seeks out emotional support from his fellow educator, the optimistic Janine Teagues. “With the other teachers, their...

Grab your remotes and get ready for more gut-busting laughs because "Abbott Elementary" is back for another epic season. The witty, record-breaking, and now Emmy-winning mockumentary sitcom returns on Sept. 21, and, of course, there's no doubt that it'll deliver yet another award-worthy season.
Fresh off their months-long press run, the "Abbott Elementary" cast - Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis - have been working nonstop to finish filming season two, so much so that the stars tell Popsugar they've hardly had a moment to revel in their unprecedented success, which Williams says is on account of still being "stuck in the incubation chamber that is 'Abbott' season one."
"You know what's weird, someone just asked me that yesterday . . . and it was the first time I actually had to grapple with that, 'What has changed?'" he shares.

When Abbott Elementary premiered as a midseason addition to ABC’s sitcom lineup in the winter of 2022, audiences were immediately caught up in the sentimental, yet thought-provoking comedy’s ability to make people care about the American education system. It was a perfect time for creator and star Quinta Brunson to bring this program to family rooms all over the country, as teachers and other school staff members are finally getting some of the appreciation they deserve for tireless, selfless work in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first season of the show helped parents and children alike to ponder some of the biggest issues facing classrooms across the country today. Gifted programs, lack of communication between teachers and parents, and administrative intervention in the daily lives of staff and students were all topics touched upon in the first 13 episodes. It’s back to school time for the Emmy-winning Abbott Elementary.
In anticipation of its Sept. 21 return to ABC, the comedy from Quinta Brunson has dropped a new teaser. And look who’s matriculating into the school this year: Leslie Odom Jr. will play Draemond, the owner of a string of charter schools in the area who pays a visit to Abbott. Additional celebrity appearances include Lauren Weedman (Euphoria) as Kristin Marie, a tough-talking teacher from a neighboring school who bears a striking resemblance to one of Abbott’s own, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Ashley, a teacher’s aide at Abbott Elementary whose go-with-the-flow personality contributes to classroom chaos.
In this workplace comedy, a group of dedicated, passionate teachers — and a slightly tone-deaf principal — are brought together in a Philadelphia public school where, despite the odds stacked against them, they are determined to help their students succeed in life.

HBO Max and Hulu will share the co-exclusive streaming rights to complete seasons of ABC’s breakout new comedy series Abbott Elementary.
It is not surprising that Abbott Elementary‘s library streaming rights were sold so quickly — after the show’s initial 13-episode midseason run — since the workplace comedy created by and starring Quinta Brunson has been a ratings and critical success and just landed seven Emmy nominations for its first season, including Outstanding Comedy Series.
What is more surprising is the unusual arrangement, with HBO Max and Hulu sharing the series’ exclusive complete season rights. It reflects Abbott Elementary’s status of an ABC series co-produced by Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television.

Millions of people have seen Chris Perfetti’s work. Over the past decade, he’s starred in the lauded mini-series “The Night Of,” “Looking,” “In the Dark” and was a series regular on “Crossbones.” But, for the most part, Perfetti has lived in relative anonymity. That is beginning to change with his role as the somewhat awkward but adorable Jacob Hill in Quinta Brunson‘s critically acclaimed ABC comedy, “Abbott Elementary.”

If the Oscars were looking for a good mood with “Coda,” then the TV Academy might look to Philadelphia school teachers’ delightful and charming maneuvers with ABC’s hit show “Abbott Elementary,” which just had its season finale on April 12. Created, written and executive produced by it-girl Quinta Brunson, the mockumentary sitcom serves as a lovely reminder of the challenges that educators face daily, both in pre- and post-pandemic society, that undervalues their contributions and roles in the lives of our children. As broadcast television continues its struggles with viewership and overall presence in the awards races, the ABC comedy could be one of the freshman series that aces it with the Television Academy and its members.
With Brunson’s multiple duties on the show, she has three shots at possible nominations, including outstanding comedy series, lead actress in a comedy and outstanding writing for a comedy series. If recognized in all three,...

Abbott Elementary continues to delight viewers each passing week on ABC as a group of educators at a public school fight to give their students the best possible experience while also being filmed by a “documentary crew.” While the mockumentary catches all of their hilarious endeavors, challenges, and triumphs, each professional at the center of this series offers up their own unique personality, including Chris Perfetti‘s Jacob Hill. In the most recent episode, Jacob furthered his efforts by taking on the lead role for Abbott’s short-lived Gifted Program. Aided by the persistent popularity of “The Office,” mockuumentary sitcoms have become a consistent form of televised comedy. With little explanation for why characters sit down and speak directly to the camera, these faux documentaries allow for quick insight, quicker cuts (usually to a joke), and plenty of deadpan humor. In the case of Quinta Brunson’s ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary” it’s part of the political commentary at the center of the show itself.
Brunson, the head writer and executive producers, also plays Janine Teagues, a second-grade teacher at the eponymous Philadelphia school. Like many young teachers, Janine is idealistic and desperate to make a change in the lives of her students. But the school’s chronic lack of funds, coupled with a narcissistic school principal, leaves Janine and the other Abbott teachers wearing multiple hats, from educator to janitor to electrician.
