When the 2023 Primetime Emmy nominations were revealed, Ali Wong and Pedro Pascal both had the honor of being included in multiple performance lineups. She made history as the first newcomer to the acting categories recognized for both live action (“Beef”) and voice (“Tuca & Bertie”) work, while he became the first actor nominated for three programs on his initial Emmy outing. These achievements made them the newest members of a group of 26 people who earned their first two (or three) acting Emmy nominations in a single year.
Wong’s eventual Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress win for “Beef” made her the seventh person in this bunch to succeed on one of her bids. The first was Robert Cummings, who received 1955’s Best Single Performance by an Actor prize for “Twelve Angry Men” and simultaneously lost for his regular lead turn on “My Hero.”

Does the world seem like it's more complicated and confusing than it used to be?
When you look at the way people lived in previous generations, are you struck by a vague sense that you missed out on something?
Do you sometimes feel as though it just hasn't been your day, your week, your month -- or even your year?
If so, you're not alone.
This might sound like the voice-over that plays over a beach volleyball scene in a commercial for the latest magic-bullet anti-depressant, but it's actually the beginning of an attempt to understand the viewing habits of tens of millions of Netflix customers.
A Surprising Trend
You see, in most previous decades, one of the defining traits of young people was a rabid interest in all things new and innovative, often to the exclusion of anything deemed "old."
That's still the case for members of Generation Z in most areas.

“Let’s not make ’em laugh” seems to be the new mantra for rewarding comedies at the Emmys.
Clear-cut, humor-filled chuckle fests once dominated the Emmys for comedy series, with classics such as “Taxi,” “The Golden Girls,” “Friends” and “Seinfeld” amusing generations of fans and finding new life via reruns and streaming services.
However, at the dawn of the streaming era, the multi-pronged so-called dramedy began creeping up in the awards circle with titles such as Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” — which famously changed from comedy to drama — and Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent.” As of late, the category has taken a more serious turn.
In recent years, the nominees and winners for comedy series have reflected a broader, more inclusive interpretation of comedy. Shows like Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Fleabag,” along with HBO’s “Barry” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” have garnered critical...

Last week, I shared a fairly long list of 15 Things That You Probably Don't Know About Wolverine. I had so much fun with it that I decided to focus on Deadpool this week, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale.
Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson, debuted in 1991's "New Mutants" #98. Created by writer Fabian Nicieza and artist Rob Liefeld, Deadpool quickly gained popularity due to his unique combination of dark humor, relentless violence, and a penchant for breaking the fourth wall.
Over the years, he has become a staple in the Marvel Universe, appearing in numerous comic books, animated series, and blockbuster movies. His irreverent attitude and complex personality have endeared him to fans worldwide. Here are five obscure facts about Deadpool that even hardcore fans might not be aware of!

Act Your Age’s arrival on Netflix was a rousing success, but was that enough to warrant a Season 2?
Act Your Age was conceived as a series akin to the iconic 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls, from which it borrowed its central premise: Three single women in their fifties with contrasting personality types, all living under one roof.
The Bounce TV sitcom starred Yvette Nicole Brown (of Community and Drake & Josh fame) as well as Kym Whitley and Trisha Campbell.

This article contains spoilers for Hacks season 3 episode 8.
As we near the finish line of Hacks’ incredible third season, the Max original comedy series continues to set a high bar in the industry for chaotic energy, lightning-quick wit, and organically grown relationships between characters. Jean Smart’s performance as Deborah Vance always stands above and beyond. Deborah’s hardened, crude exterior belies a soft, thoughtful woman underneath the surface, fighting for love and affection.
The comedian’s personality and arc have hugged the LGBTQ+ community within the story and in real life. Almost all of Deborah’s business associates are queer, and each season has been littered with plotlines connected to Deborah’s massive gay fanbase. Vance seamlessly fits into the legacy of female entertainers who capture the adoration of the gays, from pop singers like Lady Gaga to TV staples like the seniors from The Golden Girls.

It’s that time of year again that we celebrate the ladies who brought us into this world, raised us and inspired us to be the people we have become. It seems all the more significant during this time in which moms have been spending a lot more time with their kiddos.
It would be interesting to see how some of our favorite tv moms would have handled quarantine, or if some kids would actually be “safer at home” with some of these moms. It’s quite likely that if Malcolm and his brothers didn’t blow the house up out of sheer boredom, Lois’s screaming would have brought the place down. It’s doubtful that Marie Barone could have maintained social distancing, and not popped over to criticize Debra’s latest meal or endeavor while continuing to spoil Raymond. But then, the June Cleavers, Harriet Nelsons and Margaret...

NBC has given a series order to “Happy’s Place,” the Reba McEntire-led pilot the network ordered in January, and greenlit “Lopez vs. Lopez” for Season 3. The multi-cam comedy will debut during the 2024-2024 broadcast season.
“Happy’s Place” follows Bobbie (Reba McEntire), who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister (Belissa Escobedo) she never knew she had. The cast also includes Melissa Peterman, Pablo Castelblanco, Tokala Black Elk and Rex Linn. Universal Television is the studio.
With Kevin Abbott writing the series and executive producing alongside Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis, Julie Abbott and McEntire, “Happy’s Place” reunites the team who produced “Reba” for six seasons from 2001 to 2007. Is there a rule book for comedy? It’s a question igniting fiery debates, especially in today’s era of “cancel culture” dictating the dos and don’ts of stand-up. But for Tony Hinchcliffe, the idea of conforming to these restrictions is as likely as finding a unicorn at a rodeo.
“There’s no room for victim mentality here,” Hinchcliffe tells Variety. “When you step into a dark, dingy comedy club, what do you want to see? Think about it like a strip club. Do you want to see girls in a dress? Or do you want to see nasty fucking shit? You want ping-pong balls flying at your head.”

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which will not air in time to qualify for consideration.

It's the end of an era.
Young Sheldon Season 7 wraps up the family-oriented prequel to The Big Bang Theory, leaving a hole in CBS' schedule that will be hard to fill.
The news that the series was ending has been heartbreaking for many reasons. Young Sheldon features sharp, snarky characters, satirizes small-town life, and offers a nostalgic look back at life in the early 1990s.

Ayo Edebiri‘s upgrade to lead for Season 2 of “The Bear” has been an unqualified success. She won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Actress in January, along with the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ single comedy actress prize. In the midst of all that, she took home the Best Comedy Supporting Actress statuette for Season 1 at the delayed Emmy ceremony. And now Edebiri is the odds-on favorite to win the Best Comedy Actress Emmy for Season 2 in September, which would put her on a short list of women who’ve won both comedy lead and supporting trophies.

After several years of keeping their best television shows and movies to themselves, major film and television studios have signaled a willingness to license their content to other streaming services — and no one stands to benefit more from this sudden shift than Disney, according to a new report published this week.
On Monday, research firm Ampere Analysis said Disney’s robust library of highly-sought motion pictures and television series put it in a competitive position to win the secondary front of the so-called “streaming wars,” one where film and TV studios seek to tap into additional sources of revenue by licensing their content to large services like Netflix and Amazon’s Prime Video.

Disney is “set to be the big winner in the licensing renaissance” as Hollywood giants look to make revenue from their content beyond using it on their own streaming services, according to a new study.
“Disney trumps all the other major studios with its ownership of powerful licensable content, owning more than double that of its rivals,” research firm Ampere Analysis explained in a report published Monday. “After four years of major studios employing a walled-garden approach to the distribution of their TV content on streaming, licensing is steadily making a comeback.”
It added: “Studios were understandably reluctant to give up exclusivity for major franchises as they built their streaming services. But Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2023 deals to license recently released DC-adapted content to Amazon, Netflix and Tubi demonstrate that even strategies around exclusivity for core IP are now changing.”

The Golden Girls doesn’t seem like a provocative show at first glance. The sitcom was, however, groundbreaking. All living together, the cast of middle-aged women was certainly a fresh idea. For years, fans assumed Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Estelle Getty, the actors who played Blanche Devereaux, Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund, and Sophia Petrillo, respectively, were friends outside of work. That wasn’t the case. While several cast members were friendly, Bea Arthur had issues with one of her co-stars. She took issue with Betty White. In a new book, a writer for the series revealed that Arthur thought Betty White was “two-faced.”

Joining the writers room during the fifth season of Gilmore Girls required sitting down with a pen and paper to take notes on all the previous storylines and “lots of coffee,” or so writer Stan Zimmerman reflects in The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore.
In his memoir, to be published by Indigo River Publishing on Feb. 13, Zimmerman chronicles his time working on the series, as well as his journey to finding success as a writer, producer, director and playwright, working on such shows as The Golden Girls and Roseanne. Featuring journal entries throughout, The Girls also details Zimmerman’s relationships with varied stars, including Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel and the Golden Girls cast.

The Queen of Country is reuniting with NBC.
Reba McEntire, fresh off her run as a coach on NBC’s The Voice, will star in an untitled comedy that has earned a pilot order at the network. The multicamera vehicle will reunite McEntire with former Reba showrunner Kevin Abbott, who is set to pen the script for the project.
The potential series revolves around Reba, who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.
Abbott, in addition to his five-year run as the showrunner on The WB/CW’s Reba, is a comedy veteran whose credits also include Last Man Standing, Roseanne, The Golden Girls and working with McEntire on her former ABC half-hour, Malibu Country.

Reba McEntire is returning to the sitcom world — and reuniting with the team behind her last two comedies as well. NBC has given a pilot order to an untitled multi-camera comedy starring McEntire, who will also executive produce.
The show, from Universal Studio Group’s Universal TV division, stars McEntire as a woman who “inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.” Kevin Abbott is the writer and exec producer, while Michael Hanel, Mindy Schultheis and Julie Abbott are non-writing exec producers.
It’s a reunion for most of the group, who previously worked together on McEntire’s signature series for The WB, “Reba,” as well as her follow-up sitcom for ABC, “Malibu Country.” Hanel and Schultheis were exec producers for the entire run of “Reba,” while Abbott joined after the...

Ahead of the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, the Television Academy has compiled a list of the 75 Most Impactful TV Moments.
In collaboration with a group of academic professionals, the Television Academy scoured eight decades on television in search of the moments that have made the most impact on viewers, the industry and culture.
Chosen were classic moments (from the late 1940s until the 2020s) of TV’s most beloved programs, as well as news events that brought the U.S. and the world together to watch them in real time. Many of the selected televised events influenced politics and shifted the common wisdom about race, Lgtbq+ representation and more.
At the top of the list is the Apollo 11 moon landing, followed by coverage of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade center and the Beatles’ 1964 appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show.

The cast of “Ted Lasso” was back together in New York over the weekend to participate in a panel discussion about Season 3 and the success of the award-winning ensemble.
Stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster, Jeremy Swift, Toheeb Jimoh, Cristo Fernandez, Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, and James Lance appeared together at a special screening of the Season 3 finale for Screen Actors Guild members in New York City on Sunday night.
“For me, growing up loving shows like ‘Cheers’ for example – it always felt like a neat barometer that if you had a store that was the ‘Cheers’ store and that store sold a T-shirt with each character singularly on those shirts, each shirt would sell,” co-creator Sudeikis said during the event. “I wanted to be part of something that aspired to do that.”

Comedic breaking: it's been around for pretty much as long as performances. Flip through classic TV channels and you'll find Rue McClanahan delivering her lines into the back of her hand to hide giggles in episodes of "The Golden Girls," Mary Tyler Moore barely suppressing her grin in"The Dick Van Dyke Show," and Horatio Sanz wiping away tears with Mickey Mouse waffles on "Saturday Night Live." Breaking seems like an unstoppable phenomenon, especially once more than one castmate well and truly gets the giggles, but it's also a surprisingly controversial one: for every person who laughs along with the actors, there seems to be another who thinks breaking is unfunny and unprofessional.
Larry Gelbart, who created the influential and long-running '70s sitcom "M*A*S*H," was apparently not into character breaks, and he told author Ed Solomonson that one actor in the show's ensemble cast did it more than any other.

Can Netflix do for a show like “Reba” or “The Resident” what it did for “Suits?” That’s what we’ll find out next year when Disney begins licensing series to Netflix as part of a non-exclusive arrangement stretching through 2025.
Disney Entertainment and Netflix are in the works on finalizing a licensing agreement that will bring 14 different series from ABC, Fox, FX, and even ESPN to the streamer across 18 months, an individual with knowledge told IndieWire. At the time of this writing, the deal was not signed. Among the titles that will eventually make it are shows like “The Wonder Years,” “This Is Us,” “30 for 30,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Lost,” “Archer,” “Prison Break,” “Home Improvement,” and more.
“The Hughleys,” D.L. Hughley’s sitcom that began in 1998 and ran for four years, will hit streaming for the first time on any platform. And Netflix and Disney are also...

Tonight, Lifetime will jump on the sentimental trend of reuniting veteran actresses for our giddy enjoyment by airing Ladies of the 80s: A Divas Christmas, a festive romp that stars Loni Anderson (Wkrp in Cincinnati), Morgan Fairchild (Falcon Crest), Linda Gray (Dallas), Donna Mills (Knots Landing) and Nicollette Sheridan (Knots Landing).
The holiday flick from longtime producer Larry A. Thompson (Liz & Dick) follows five soap opera divas as they reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running sudser.

So between managing Donna and being friends with the ladies, I said it might be fun to have all these ladies in a movie. The feature-length documentary A Disturbance In The Force delves into the bizarre history of 1978’s ill-advised Star Wars Holiday Special. It’s out next month.
Bea Arthur out of The Golden Girls tending the Cantina bar in Mos Eisley. Stormtroopers disco dancing. Kris Kristofferson dressed up as Han Solo for some reason. Yes, 1978’s Star Wars Holiday Special offers up such an array of bizarre, fever dream imagery that it has long since passed into legend.
Initially conceived as a stop-gap to tide fans over during the long wait between 1977’s Star Wars and 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, a mixture of somewhat relaxed quality control and 1970s US television conventions saw the special emerge as a glittery variety show rather than fantastical space opera. On “Music Video Night,” reality TV star Harry Jowsey was going for a “Justin Timberlake” look in his routine with pro partner Rylee Arnold. Alas, the couple scored a mere 24 points (out of 40) for their jazz set to Nsync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” When critiqued by the judges, Bruno Tonioli quipped that Jowsey’s Timberlake wig looked like it belonged to “Sophia Petrillo” from The Golden Girls. TV Insider asked Jowsey on the post-show press line if he’s aware of who Sophia Petrillo is. “I know the name,” he responded. “If I see a photo of [her], I’d probably know who that is.” Arnold likewise was unfamiliar with the wise-cracking character played by the late Estelle Getty on the NBC sitcom that ran from 1985-1992 and lives on in reruns on Hallmark, in memes, and in clips on Instagram. By the time Quentin Tarantino made his debut with 1992’s Reservoir Dogs, Martin Scorsese already had 13 films under his belt. If he had stopped at movie #10 (1986’s The Color of Money), we would have never had a Hollywood where both Scorsese and Qt could compete for Best Director in the same year (as happened in 2020). Heck, Tarantino hadn’t even appeared as Elvis on The Golden Girls yet! And as Scorsese has Killers of the Flower Moon (his 26th narrative feature) out in theaters now, Tarantino is about to ride into the sunset with The Movie Critic, his oft-discussed/threatened 10th and final film. So what are the 80–year-old Scorsese’s thoughts on Tarantino bowing out of the game at a mere 60, the same age he made Gangs of New York? Well, he sort of sees where he’s coming from…
Speaking with The Associated Press, Scorsese said Tarantino comes from a different artform entirely.

You might think that the fact the Emmys haven’t yet been handed out might serve to hamstring the Golden Globes. But that presumption would be incorrect, since the Globes are especially difficult to predict because they rarely follow any established pattern. Emmy winners in particular seem to have little impact on which TV series wind up triumphant at the Globes as well.
Consider some recent history. While the Emmys were honoring either ABC’s “Modern Family” (five) and HBO’s “Veep” (three) for eight consecutive years in the Best Comedy Series category, the Globes were paying tribute to fledgling streaming comedies like Amazon’s “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” Sometimes, that makes it a trendsetter in honoring the new and buzzworthy. We’ll see if that continues this year when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as we knew it has been disbanded and there will theoretically be a...

“Moonlighting” lovers are a dedicated crew — it was the kind of wildly imaginative, smart, sophisticated series that inspired passionate loyalty over the course of its 66 episodes (the two-part pilot is shown as a single episode) and five seasons on the air. What’s even more remarkable about fans’ dedication is the relative rarity of the series; the Glenn Gordon Caron-created genre hybrid has rarely been in regular syndication and its DVD releases have been out of print since 2013.
Not that the DVD releases really satisfied the die-hard fans. Sure, they got to relive just what all the fuss was about when the show took the country by storm back in 1985, as former model Maddie Hayes (Cybill Shepherd) and wise guy detective David Addison (a pre-“Die Hard” Bruce Willis) investigated crimes, bickered, broke the fourth wall, and generally served as television trailblazers up to and including the “Moonlighting” curse...

As she had done during her entire career, Betty White continued to make people laugh well into her 90s, still appearing in movies and TV shows long after most of her contemporaries had either retired or passed away. While she appeared in scores of movies, TV series, and game shows, the two shows she’ll forever be most remembered for are The Mary Tyler Moore Show, in which she played “The Happy Homemaker,” Sue Anne Nivens; and The Golden Girls, in which she played naive widow Rose Nylund. After both making good on their recent efforts to become first-time lead acting Emmy contenders, formerly supporting “Succession” cast mates Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook are naturally expected to be similarly bumped up on the next Golden Globes ballot. If they do achieve their first Best TV Drama Actor and Best TV Drama Actress notices this winter, the on-screen siblings will join a group of 10 other Golden Globe nominees who succeeded in rebranding their initially supporting characters as lead ones. As it stands, said club has not welcomed a new member – regardless of genre or gender – in two full decades.

Filmed earlier this year, the movie follows five soap opera divas as they reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running sudser. Since 1967, the Best Comedy Actress Primetime Emmy category has seen 13 direct costar showdowns involving seven different combinations of female leads. While this list is four entries longer than the corresponding male roster, the category still falls significantly behind the other 10 lead or supporting ones, all of which boast cast mate battle totals of at least 20. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to learn more about the 13 cases of dual or triple nominations in the Best Comedy Actress category.
Unlike the Best Comedy Actor list, this female one includes more than just pairs of clashing costars. After “The Golden Girls” actresses Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White blazed a trail in 1986 as the first trio of performers to receive same-year nominations for a single continuing series (and repeated the feat three more times), they were emulated by “Desperate Housewives” stars Marcia Cross, Teri Hatcher, and Felicity Huffman in 2005. This remained...

“Moonlighting,” the ’80s detective series that revived Cybill Shepherd’s career and gave Bruce Willis his, has long been notoriously unavailable. But all that changes when its 67 episodes begin streaming on Hulu on October 10.
Yes, that’s correct: Five seasons encompassed all of just 67 episodes of a network show. The series — created by Glen Gordon Caron — was infamous for missing its deadlines to make it to air (there’s even a joke in “The Golden Girls” about staying in to watch an episode that’s “only been rerun three times”) and by on-set strife that garnered reams of tabloid coverage.
Prevented by music rights issues from streaming, the series is poised to win over a new generation of fans for whom the behind-the-scenes drama will just be background noise. Per TVLine, the songs sung by the cast and the Al Jarreau theme song remain intact; ambient music has been swapped out where necessary.

The '80s were a different time; shoulder pads were in, Reaganomics was taking over the country, and in 1984, a hyper-stylish show called "Miami Vice" was about to become all the rage. Before the Florida-set cop series ever premiered on NBC, though, it had already inspired another series, one that seemed to have very little in common with the Michael Mann-produced action show.
That series was "The Golden Girls," the popular and gut-bustingly funny sitcom about women of a certain age that has only become more beloved in the decades since it ended. "The Golden Girls" is remembered for its positive and honest conversations about aging and its characters' penchant for savage, hilarious quips. It also bolstered the fame of its already-famous stars, Bea Arthur ("Maude"), Betty White ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), Rue McClanahan (also "Maude"), and Estelle Getty ("Mask"). Put together around a kitchen table, the four...
