Photo credit: “Shutterstock.AI” Baseball has always held a special place in cinema – from the heartfelt dramas of The Pride of the Yankees and Field of Dreams to the hilarious antics of The Bad News Bears and The Sandlot. Among these classics stands Major League, a beloved 1980s sports comedy packed with unforgettable characters and humor. Instead of a team destined to lose, let’s imagine this Major League focuses on an underdog squad assembled from misfits and overlooked veterans. Think players who never got their big break, those written off by other teams, but ready to prove they’ve still got what it takes. Now, with a chance to shine on the Cleveland Indians, this unlikely group surprises everyone…maybe even themselves. This enduring film still delights audiences with its sharp wit and memorable quotes. During a panel at GalaxyCon Columbus 2022, star Corbin Bernsen reflected on reading the script for the first time.

In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.

The premise of the 1977 sitcom "Three's Company" -- adapted from the 1973 British series "Man About the House" -- would likely never fly in 2024. Roommates Janet (Joyce DeWitt) and Chrissy (Suzanne Somers) require a third roommate to pay rent in their expensive Santa Monica apartment. They stumble across Jack Tripper (John Ritter), an aspiring culinary student whom they get along with. It so happens, though, that the building's landlord, Mr. Roper (Normal Fell), is ultra-conservative and refuses to let unmarried men and women share his apartments. To get around this contrived contingency, Janet and Chrissy tell Mr. Roper that Jack is gay. This satisfies the landlord but opens Jack up to homophobic jibes.
Fell eventually left the series and was replaced by the high-strung Mr. Furley, played by Don Knotts. Mr. Furley, it seems, required the charade to continue. Somers also left the show in its last two seasons and was...

The Golden Globes told other shows to “f— off” because “Succession” dominated with a leading nine nominations. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Waystar Royco’s victory lap and other snubs and surprises in the TV nominations (watch above; TV categories start at 42:48).
With its nine bids, “Succession” broke the record shared by “The Thorn Birds” (1984) and “L.A Law” (1990) for the most Golden Globe nominations by a show in a single year. The HBO hit, which earned 27 Emmy bids for its fourth and final season, was nominated in every category in which it was eligible, most notably getting in all three of its lead actors — Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong — into the Best TV Drama Actor category, just like it did at the Emmys. Can anything stop it from snagging its record-tying third Best Drama Series Globe win?

For decades, “The Thorn Birds” (1984) and “L.A Law” (1990) shared the Golden Globes record for the most nominations ever received by a TV program in a single year at eight. Now that record has been shattered by “Succession,” which just earned a whopping nine bids on Monday, December 11 (see the complete list of noms). HBO’s family drama is honored for its fourth and final season, which wrapped up this spring to universal acclaim from critics and fans.
Golden Globes history was made when “Succession” netted these nine nominations: drama series, drama actress (Sarah Snook), drama actor x3, supporting actress (J. Smith-Cameron) and supporting actor x3.

Since it’s about to wrap up its Netflix run after six seasons, “The Crown” has no chance of matching the record for most Best Drama Series Golden Globe nominations, which has been held since 2001 by seven-time contender “ER.” However, its appearances in five previous lineups give it the opportunity to make history in a different way, as its probable upcoming sixth program notice would make it the first concluded drama series to earn Golden Globes recognition for every one of its multiple seasons. This monumental achievement, which would occur five decades into the existence of this major category, truly shouldn’t be difficult for the ever-popular show to pull off, especially since it’s already a two-time Best Drama Series winner.
The yet-unseen sixth and final season of “The Crown” is currently ranked third on Gold Derby’s Best Drama Series Golden Globe predictions list, with the early odds heavily favoring HBO’s “Succession,...

When NBC premiered "The Cosby Show" on September 20, 1984, the network effectively claimed ownership of Thursday night primetime television for several decades. This was the unofficial beginning of Must-See TV (the moniker wouldn't be coined until 1993), and the series' ratings prominence throughout the mid- to late-'80s anchored NBC's lineup, allowing them to switch out sitcoms in the 8:30 and 9:30 slots as needed.
The other Thursday half-hour slot deemed untouchable by the network was the 9 p.m. post dominated by "Cheers." Created by James Burrows, Glen Charles, and Les Charles, the show built around a neighborhood Boston bar where everybody knows your name bounced around during its first two seasons before permanently bellying up to 9 p.m. for the rest of its 11-season run. It was the lightly ribald counterpart to the family-friendly antics of "The Cosby Show," and it never had a bad season.

Streaming services are now trying to ration their upcoming original content due to the ongoing actors strike and the only recently-resolved writers’ strike, so we’re going to see a thinning-down of new releases across the board over the next six months at least. Hulu will be adding a lot of library TV shows and movies in November, but there are only a few new major original projects hitting the streamer this month.
Hulu’s spotlight streaming series in November is Black Cake, which is based on the bestselling book by Charmaine Wilkerson. Part family drama, part murder mystery, the show features a globetrotting story that will cover decades of events after a bereaved family find a flash drive that contains some shocking secrets about the hidden history of their late matriarch.

The 1980s were a junky era for film and television. Once the studios and networks figured out what kinds of formulas American audiences were keen on after Vietnam, Watergate, and the election of Ronald Reagan reshaped the country's psyche, they exploited them relentlessly. One particularly reliable genre of sorts was the gung-ho, men-on-a-mission actioner where outnumbered, yet armed-to-the-teeth heroes resourcefully defeated equally well-armed bad guys.
When these projects were made for the big screen, studios piled on the red meat. Scads of folks got shot, stabbed, and blown up, and the directors didn't skimp on the viscera. These were the hardest of the hard R-rated movies of the decade, and they made heaps of money.
At a network level, television was still cinema's less-appreciated little brother in the 1980s. Sitcoms were king, while hour-long dramas tended toward soapiness or murder-of-the-week mysteries. There were very fine shows that worked within these parameters,...

Throughout the entire eight-decade history of the Golden Globes, two TV shows have received a record-high eight nominations in a single year: “The Thorn Birds” at the 1984 ceremony and “L.A Law” at the 1990 gala (it went home empty-handed that year). Now the final season of “Succession” is hoping to match that nominations record — or even beat it — at the upcoming 2024 Golden Globes.
Gold Derby currently predicts that HBO’s dearly departed family show will easily score six Golden Globe noms. Drama series, drama actress Sarah Snook, drama actors Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox, and supporting actor Matthew Macfadyen all seem to be givens. A seventh bid is on the bubble for supporting actor Alan Ruck. That means if any of the potential dark horse candidates also get in, “Succession” would enter the history books. Could it grab eight, nine or even 10 nominations?

While the first Primetime Emmys battle involving two male drama series costars occurred in 1957, it took until 1980 for there to be such a showdown in the corresponding female category. In the time since on-screen mother and daughter Sada Thompson and Kristy McNichol (“Family”) faced off, 10 more pairs of dramatic lead actresses have been pitted against each other at the Emmys between one and six times each. Scroll through our chronological photo gallery to learn more about the 22 separate cases of dual Best Drama Actress nominations.

Saturday marks 96 years since the great Peter Falk was born (9-16-27), which strikes us as a great reason to revisit a detective drama as timeless as it is entertaining. In the whole of television history, few actors have been as identified with a single character than was Falk with Lieutenant Columbo, the eccentric, rumpled, cigar-chomping, trench coat-clad, implausibly wily Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective who always got his man. In the process, Falk and the producers revolutionized what a cop show could be. We’re wishing him a Happy Birthday, even though he left us on June 23, 2011.
It’s been more than a half-century since Falk began portraying the world’s favorite lieutenant as part of the rotating “NBC Mystery Movie” franchise on September 15, 1971. It would grow to become a global phenomenon originally across eight seasons (1971-78), then again sporadically from 1989 to 2003. The series itself would win 13 Emmys.

When HBO scored four slots on this year’s list of outstanding drama Emmy nominees, it wasn’t quite a huge surprise. The pay cabler is holding a hot hand at the moment — and I said as much in my February Variety magazine cover story of HBO and Max content chairman/CEO Casey Bloys. With “Succession,” “The Last of Us,” “House of the Dragon” and “The White Lotus” among the biggest shows of the year, and eight available slots in the category, of course HBO would land those four.
And yet, let’s give credit where credit is due. It is extremely impressive. And it has only happened twice before: In 1992, when NBC scored four of five slots, with “I’ll Fly Away,” “L.A. Law,” “Law & Order” and “Quantum Leap”; and 1973, when CBS landed four of six with “The Waltons,” “Cannon,” “Hawaii Five-o” and “Mannix.”

With so many other, more current legal shows available, it seems pretty amazing that the 37-year-old L.A. Law is once getting streaming time. During its eight-season run between 1986 and 1994, the show was an Emmy-winning machine, getting the Best Drama Series award in its first, third, fourth, and fifth seasons, along with 11 other wins and 69 nominations in all. Susan Ruttan, who earned four of those nominations in her supporting role, thinks the reason for the enduring success of L.A. Law is, very simply, the quality that went into it. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Prime Video is relying on a heaping dose of fun library movies.
The first of the month brings a big influx of worthwhile flicks, including Galaxy Quest, Saw, F9: The Fast Saga, and Jurassic Park (the last two via Amazon’s Freevee free streaming option). Then some other recents hits arrive later on like the appropriately titled Cocaine Bear on Aug. 15 and the Chris Pine-starring Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Aug. 25.
August also sees the arrival of a major Amazon Original movie in the form of Red, White & Royal Blue. Based on a New York Times bestselling book, this LGBTQ romance follows a U.S. president’s son and a British prince. Over on the TV side of things, Prime Video subscribers can check out the Sigourney Weaver project The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart on Aug. 4 and Harlan Coben’s Shelter on Aug.

It was 1989, and “Night Court” was still riding high as part of NBC’s “Must See TV” lineup on Thursday nights, the one that featured “The Cosby Show,” “Family Ties” and “Cheers” along with “L.A. Law.” It had the kind of ratings no one could even dream of now, since cable (much less streaming) had yet to become a major prime time force. John Larroquette was the toast of TV portraying “Night Court’s” assistant Da Dan Fielding. He was snappy. He was overbearing. He was a shameless womanizer. He was hilarious. And voting members of the TV academy agreed, bestowing four straight Emmy Awards on Larroquette for supporting actor in a comedy. Not nominations. Wins. He took home Emmys for four consecutive years and was favored to make it five in a row when the actor did something no one could have predicted.
He decided he was done and withdrew his name from consideration.
