The overwhelming success of Game of Thrones predictably created a special kind of rush over at HBO. Countless screenwriters are trying their luck, rigorously penning and pitching their spin-off and prequel ideas, and George Martin and the HBO executives have to go through them all, turning down… Pretty much everything.
One promising spin-off that was previously canceled, however, might still sail!
HBO Turned Down Grrm-Approved Prequel
When it comes to Game of Thrones, the best spin-off ideas are often prequels. George Martin made sure to create vast and captivating history for Westeros and Essos, with many compelling and intriguing historical figures fans would love to see on their screens. Warrior-Queen Nymeria has always been one of them, and writer Brian Helgeland decided to adapt her story, 10,000 Ships, for a spin-off.
HBO didn’t pick up his idea, despite his having George Martin’s full support.
“[10,000 Ships’ script] came out great, but...

George R. R. Martin, creator of the “Game of Thrones” franchise, says there may be a new spinoff to look forward to.
In a blog post on Tuesday, the author and producer said that playwright Eboni Booth is “working on a new pilot” for “Ten Thousand Ships,” a series that screenwriter Bryan Helgeland recently said he’d been attached to before HBO scrapped the project. (HBO declined to comment on whether “Ten Thousand Ships” is in development.)
Congratulating Booth for her recent Pulitzer Prize win, Martin wrote, “She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships, a Game Of Thrones spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. The relationships in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is a jumbling mess, and sometimes it is hard to keep track of. Incest is all too common in the Targaryen family, and one of the incestuous long-theorized couples belongs to the Green faction. Aemond and Helaena have shared a liking for each other. But did it ever turn into love?
Aemond and Helaena might be a thing in House of the Dragon
Fans have often shipped the two Targaryen siblings for a long time. In a recent interview with Decider, Phia Saban and Ewan Mitchell also hinted towards the same. Saban said: “I mean, sometimes Ewan [and I] will be doing a scene and we’ll be like, ‘Do it for Helaemond.’ And he’s like, ‘You know what the people want.’”
Mitchell too agreed to the fact, and said: “I think it’s nice to leave, you know,...

Officials in Mexico are protesting an HBO marketing campaign that uses historic locations to promote House of the Dragon season two.
The online campaign shows monuments around the world raising House Targaryen banners supporting either King Aegon (green) or Queen Rhaenyra (black). The videos have gotten plenty of online spread, with HBO rather cleverly employing a mix of CG-generated images and also actual flags being flown at certain locations — leaving many users confused as to which of these are real, and which are not.
One of the (fake) clips showed the historic Chapultepec Castle depicted flying black Targaryen flags, which has irked officials at Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.

It’s a late April afternoon when Shōgun breakout star Anna Sawai, who stars as the fierce Lady Toda Mariko in the gorgeously wrought, sharply modernized adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 bestseller, spots castmate Tadanobu Asano and producer-star Hiroyuki Sanada across a studio floor. Her face lights up. It hasn’t even been a week since FX’s runaway hit historical drama ended its debut season on a breathtaking note of bittersweet catharsis, having enthralled viewers over 10 episodes with its sweeping saga of survival and sacrifice in 17th Century Japan. But as the rising actress reunites with her Shōgun co-stars, a new charge of electricity crackles in the air.
Mariko-sama, Lord Yoshii Toranaga, and the impish schemer Kashigi Yabushige, together again in another life. The trio has traveled from far-flung cities to mark a groundbreaking moment in which Shōgun is setting sail for a new destination: the Emmys.

Look, if you've been paying even the slightest amount of attention to /Film's coverage of all the various "Game of Thrones" spinoffs and prequels in development over the last few years, then you know exactly how we have to open this article about a previously-canceled series that might be coming back to life. In the prescient words of House Greyjoy: "What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger."
While those house words were referring to the act of, uh, intentionally drowning themselves to prove how Tough they are (the Greyjoys were a weird bunch), it still feels pretty relevant when it comes to an unexpected bit of news regarding "10,000 Ships." It was initially reported to be in the works back in 2021 with writer Amanda Segel attached and was intended to tackle a particularly interesting era of Westerosi history. Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy play the roles of Daemon Targaryen and Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. While the two have great on-screen chemistry, the love and respect they have for one another in real life is what wins our hearts.

Many of us were disappointed when Succession concluded last year after just a four-season run, leaving us as downtrodden as Kendall on a park bench. But, really, it got out when it should have, not running for more seasons simply because it was a hit. One year removed from “With Eyes Open”, is it possible for more Succession, perhaps in the form of a spin-off? That falls on one man: series creator Jesse Armstrong.
As Casey Bloys, chairman/CEO of content for HBO and Max, told Variety of the potential for a Succession spin-off, “If he wants to do it, I would take [creator] Jesse’s lead on that. If for some reason Jesse called and said, ‘I’ve been thinking about it and I really want to do a spinoff,’ I would say, ‘Great.’” Still, he himself wasn’t entirely sure if it would be justified, as the drama doesn...

On June 16, the second season of House of the Dragon will premiere, a prequel to Game of Thrones that focuses on the reign of the Targaryen family, ancient rulers of dragons and owners of stormy temperaments.
In honor of the release of a new chapter of a great story, we have compiled a rating of the show's main characters – from the most fan favorite to straight up villains.
7. Viserys Targaryen
Throughout the first season, Viserys dies of an illness. However, despite this, Viserys retains a sharp mind to the very end, unlike most of the other characters. The only person who actually makes an effort to mend fences and bring the family together is Viserys. Especially his young wife Alicent and eldest daughter Rhaenyra.

Remember how we recently reported that legendary writer Brian Helgeland pitched a Game of Thrones spin-off series to HBO, which was tentatively titled 10,000 Ships, and was supposed to be focused on Queen Nymeria, the warrior-queen of the Rhoynar? The idea was, as you might remember, rejected by HBO at the time, and based on everything, we criticized that as a bad move. Well… it seems now that it wasn’t the idea that was an issue but rather Helgeland, as George R.R. Martin himself confirmed that he is currently working on the pilot for a Game of Thrones spin-off series titled… you guessed it… 10,000 Ships!
This comes off as a rather strange piece of news, seeing what was revealed last month, but it seems that Queen Nymeria’s story will be ultimately presented to the fans, although we have yet to see how, as it obviously won’t be Helegeland’s original idea.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for the ending of “Ren Faire.”]
It didn’t take director Lance Oppenheim long to realize his three-part docuseries about the Texas Renaissance Fair would become a succession drama. He was drawn to the project by the story of King George Coulam, a man who built this empire of make believe, which he ruled like an emperor: playing corporate overlord, elected mayor, and cosplay king of the festival and town he built from scratch. With Coulam being 86-years old and experiencing some health issues, Oppenheim knew there was at least the potential of a Game of Thrones-like storyline when he started making “Ren Faire.”
“I knew that the succession idea was existentially in the air,” said Oppenheim. “And by the end of our first shoot, like seven days into this, I had met everybody already, and knew fairly quickly, especially compare to previous projects, what this would be about.”

Matt Smith is being praised online for gently course-correcting a red carpet interview in which a reporter misgendered his “House of the Dragon” co-star Emma D’Arcy. Smith and D’Arcy star on the “Game of Thrones” prequel series as Daemon and Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively.
During an interview at the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 premiere in London, Smith chatted with reporter Sue Perkins on the red carpet about the climactic moment in the first season finale where Daemon informs Rhaenyra about the death of her son, Lucerys. Perkins, who hosts Sky’s fan show “House of the Dragon: War Room,” incorrectly used “she” pronouns when referring to D’Arcy. Perks said she spoke to D’Arcy earlier on the red carpet and “she gave you all the credit” for the scene.
“I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant?” Smith answered, using D’Arcy’s preferred “they/them” pronouns.

Perkins, who hosts Sky’s fan show “House of the Dragon: War Room,” incorrectly used “she” pronouns when referring to D’Arcy. Perks said she spoke to D’Arcy earlier on the red carpet and “she gave you all the credit” for the scene.

Director Neil Marshall made one of the all-time coolest werewolf movies with his 2002 film Dog Soldiers (watch it Here), so it’s shocking that we’ve never gotten a sequel… especially considering we’re living in a world where An American Werewolf in Paris exists, and there have been eight Howling movies. A few years ago, Marshall said there was “more of a chance” of the sequel happening than ever before… but in a new interview with Inverse, he gave a disappointing update, saying he fears that Dog Soldiers 2 is dead in the water.
When asked for a status update on Dog Soldiers 2, Marshall told Inverse, “I’ve a feeling it’s probably dead in the water because things have gone very quiet from the other side. I’m not giving up, though; there’s still a possibility. We’ve been trying to get it off the ground for the past six years.

After the two-fold delay involving the pandemic and the following WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Prime Video’s The Boys, among numerous other shows, has severely lagged at marketing its future plans to the public. As productions slowly get back on track, updates regarding the fates of some of the industry’s most prized shows are also being revealed accordingly.

Actress Kelly Reilly is best known for her role as the feisty Beth Dutton in the Western drama series Yellowstone. In season 2, Beth deals with a delicate situation with her usual fierceness, leading to a compelling moment that can rival even the best scenes in Game of Thrones. The scene sees Beth coming to the rescue of her sister-in-law, and leaving sheer carnage in her wake as she delivers an apt response for the latter’s unfair treatment. Here is what is arguably the most badass Beth Dutton moment from Yellowstone.

Competing in the age of streaming is a tough business. At a time when Netflix enjoys a chokehold with its global dominance on the potential subscriber base, the push for quality content stands out of paramount importance.
Taking note of it, HBO took a leap of faith as it diverged away from its tried and tested formula of working productions like the fantasy epics of Game of Thrones to invest in satirical and dark comedies like The White Lotus.

Since the conclusion of Season 4 of the series, many have been wondering about the saga’s future. We’ve known all along that director Zack Snyder intended to release extended, R-rated director’s cuts of his movies Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review Here) and Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver (read our review of that one Here), which were rated PG-13 in their shorter form. What we didn’t realize is that the director’s cuts would have different titles than the shorter versions – but Netflix has just confirmed that is the case, while also unveiling a batch of images from the director’s cuts and announcing that they will both be available to watch on their streaming service as of August 2nd. The new title for the director’s cut of the first movie is Rebel Moon – Chapter One: Chalice of Blood. The second movie is Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness.

You have to hand it to “The Boys.” Production on Season 4 of the Amazon action satire wrapped over a year ago, with its release delayed by subsequent strikes in the entertainment industry. The premiere still manages to be almost uncannily well-timed, with characters waiting on a verdict from the breathlessly publicized Manhattan trial of a polarizing political figure. Granted, the figure in question is Homelander (Antony Starr), the psychopathic Captain America type who serves as the series’ archvillain, not a certain former — and possibly future — president. But the trial’s subject is a clear allusion to an infamous Trumpism. When Homelander eye-lasered a protester for throwing a plastic bottle at his son, he essentially shot somebody in the middle of 5th Avenue. And in the ever-cynical world of “The Boys,” Homelander loses about as much support for it as his real-life inspiration.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon is almost here. The show is a prequel set before the events of Game of Thrones. Season 1 set up the conflict between the two factions of the Targaryen family, the Blacks and the Greens. Season 2 will launch into the Dance of the Dragons civil war.
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen leads the Blacks, and King Aegon II Targaryen leads the Greens. The two sides will vie for their claim on the Iron Throne.
Season 2 will see many changes in how the story is told. Most importantly, we won’t have timejumps like in season 1. The story will be told in a much more linear fashion. Besides this, reports state that a new version of the opening credits for Season 2 will be added. Showrunner Ryan Condal commented further on adding this new intro during a Season 2 press roundtable.

Moon Knight star Ethan Hawke and Game of Thrones actress Lena Headey starred in James DeMonaco’s 2013 dystopian horror film The Purge, a major box-office success despite its mixed reviews. The insane plot of the film was derived from a real-life event that the director himself has encountered.
The Purge (2013) / Universal Pictures
Of course, DeMonaco did not participate in any purging activities, but the idea came from his wife which he thought was a brilliant concept that must be put on the big screen.

My wife said something in a road rage incident that stayed with me.

Martin had originally created a 5-year time skip after a significant event in the novels that opened up the next set of plot lines in the narrative.
