Andre Braugher, the dynamic actor known for his outstanding work on such shows as Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died. He was 61.
Braugher died Monday after a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death turned out to be lung cancer.
Braugher starred as master interrogator Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street for the first six seasons of the show’s acclaimed 1993-99 run, then played another cop, Capt. Raymond Holt — this time against type and for laughs — on the 2013-21 Fox-nbc sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
He won his first Emmy in 1998 for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Homicide after a season that featured one of its most memorable episodes, “Subway.” That was a two-hander in which Pembleton tries to unearth whether a man (Vincent D’Onofrio) pinned between a Baltimore subway train...

André Braugher has died. The two-time Emmy-winning star of series including Homicide: Life on the Street, Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was 61.
Braugher, whose first film role came alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the Ed Zwick-directed Glory, died Monday after a brief illness.
While Braugher peppered his résumé with comedies, many will remember him for his ferocious portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Put him in “the box,” sweating out and outsmarting crime suspects in the interrogation room, and you were looking at a weekly dose of tour de force acting, as good as it got on television during that time. He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98. His wife, Ami Brabson, recurred as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

Now that the first weekend of August is in the books, the most competitive part of the summer is over, giving us a reasonably good idea of what this year's biggest movie season looked like. Barring any surprise breakouts over the next few weeks, it's safe to call it a mixed bag. Sure, we had gargantuan hits like "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer," but we had massive flops like "The Flash" and "Haunted Mansion." Yet, while high-profile misfires took the lion's share of the spotlight, it was "Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken" that slipped through the cracks as one of the summer's biggest duds. More than that, it may end up as the lowest-grossing movie in DreamWorks Animation's history.
After a miserable sixth weekend in which the film grossed a mere $30,000 domestically, "Ruby Gillman" has earned just $40.8 million worldwide. This includes a truly miserable $15.6 million domestically. Against a $70 million budget, Universal Pictures...

So far, the summer movie season has seen its fair share of disappointments, and not even Harrison Ford‘s Indiana Jones could turn things around in the weekend before the 4th of July. Read on for the weekend box office report.
It’s been 15 years since Ford sported Indiana Jones’s trademark hat and whip, so his return as the popular adventurer in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” should have been one of the summer’s biggest event movies. Disney released the Lucasfilm movie into 4,600 theaters, making it one of the widest releases of all time, but that didn’t help matters much. After making $7.2 million in Thursday previews and $24 million on Friday, “Dial of Destiny” brought in a relatively disappointing $60 million over the weekend.
It averaged roughly $13,000 per venue, which is decent, but not enough for it to be considered one of the summer hits. For comparison,...

“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” isn’t showing signs that it will turn a theatrical profit for Disney and Lucasfilm, earning $24 million from 4,600 theaters on its opening day as industry estimates project a $60 million opening weekend.
While that’s on the lower end of the $60-$65 million projections that independent trackers had for the fifth and final “Indiana Jones” movie, it’s well short of the $100 million opening weekend that “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” had in 2008. Those are the sort of numbers that “Dial of Destiny” needs to break even against its reported $295 million budget before a top-dollar marketing campaign that included a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and screenings and press tours for the cast in Berlin and Sicily.
Full demographic breakdowns will be available on Sunday, but presale numbers indicated that interest in “Indiana Jones 5” skewed significantly towards older audiences,...

The newest entry into the "Alien" franchise started by Ridley Scott is coming to us from Fede Álvarez, the filmmaker who brought us 2013's "Evil Dead" and 2016's "Don't Breathe." The film, which will be released on Hulu, is set to star Cailee Spaeny. Though we don't have any information yet about what role she'll play or what the story of the film is, we do know that she'll have a co-star in Isabela Merced, according to Deadline.
Merced recently co-starred as Juliet Capulet in the comedy film "Rosaline," a re-telling of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" from the perspective of Romeo's former lover. She also appeared in the 2022 remake of "Father of the Bride" with Andy Garcia, played Izabella in "Transformers: The Last Knight," and Rachel Cooper in the Netflix film "Sweet Girl" starring Jason Momoa. Fantasy films and television have been the basis for some of the most memorable scores in history, and more are on display with the debuts of “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” this week and “House of the Dragon” on Sunday.
Disney+ and HBO are, for the most part, keeping a lid on music until the shows premiere, but Variety got a preview of both from the composers themselves.
“I feel like every composer wants to, at some stage, write that big action-adventure score and get to work with an orchestra,” says Amie Doherty, composer of “She-Hulk,” the Marvel series with Tatiana Maslany as a lawyer who can also turn into a giant green-skinned super-being.
Doherty, the Irish-born composer who recently scored the animated “Spirit Untamed” and orchestrated many episodes of “Star Trek: Discovery” and “The Umbrella Academy,” has secretly been toiling on “She-Hulk” for the past year.

Exclusive: Isabela Merced is set to join Dakota Johnson in Sony Pictures’ Madame Web. Also on board are Sydney Sweeney and Celeste O’Connor for director S.J. Clarkson. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless penned the screenplay, with Kerem Sanga also penning a previous draft.

In the comics, Madame Web is depicted as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis and thus was connected to a life-support system that looked like a spider web. Due to her age and medical condition, Madame Web never actively fought any villains. For that reason, sources have stressed it’s possible the project could turn into something else. Male characters in films continued to heavily outnumber female characters in 2021, according to the latest It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World study from Dr. Martha Lauzen, executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.
A hefty 85% of films featured more male than female characters, the study found. Male characters outnumbered females by almost two to one, and just 31% of films featured sole female protagonists. Only 7% of films had more female than male characters, while 8% of films featured equal numbers of female and male characters.
Major female characters in 2021 dropped slightly from 2020, from 38% in 2020 to 35% of major characters last year. Females made up 34% of all speaking characters, down from 36% in 2019, while sole female protagonists increased ever so slightly from 29% in the first year of the pandemic to 31% last year.

On Tuesday, “The Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion made Oscar history as the first woman to receive two best director nominations.
Campion is nominated in the 2022 directing category opposite Steven Spielberg for “West Side Story,” Kenneth Branagh for “Belfast,” Paul Thomas Anderson for “Licorice Pizza” and Ryusuke Hamaguchi for “Drive My Car.” Her first Oscar nod for directing came in 1994 when she was nominated for “The Piano” at the 66th Academy Awards. She won the Oscar for original screenplay that year.
“It’s both sad but it’s also great that women are punching that glass ceiling out of the way. I really feel things are changing,” Campion told Variety of her directing nomination.
Exactly how much things are changing behind the camera with regard to gender and racial equity has been analyzed by Dr. Stacy Smith and the team at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative as they release their annual study.

This marks the fifth year that the entire membership of the academy can take part in the nomination stage of the Animated Feature Oscar race. Previously, only select members of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch and invited members from the other branches could serve on the committee that decided the nominees. Collectively, the committee tended to favor traditional and stop-motion films over CG fare. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2022 Oscars predictions for Best Animated Feature.)
Mandatory attendance at screenings has been dropped and voters who want to be on the nominations committee need only attest to having seen all the contenders at theaters or screenings or by way of the the academy’s streaming site.
The method of determining the nominees has also changed. Gone is the system where voters scored a film from 6 (poor) to 10 (excellent) with only those movies meriting an average mark of at least 7.5 eligible for a nomination.

In most Oscar categories, it’s clear what “best” means. Not so the annual animated feature race, in which the ballot presents perhaps the greatest range of any category every year — certainly, in terms of budget, subject matter, artistic style and formal innovation. Where else can you see a pair of superhero movies competing against an ultra-personal Japanese anime and stop-motion Wes Anderson movie, to use 2018 as an example?
Consider this year’s crop: Among the 26 films that qualified, you’ll find everything from a splashy studio hit (“Sing 2”) to a cult-interest Sundance indie (Dash Shaw’s hand-drawn “Cryptozoo”), from a Sony-animated pop-culture phenom (“The Mitchells vs. the Machines”) to a highly targeted, “Heavy Metal”-esque midnight movie (“The Spine of Night”).
Many of the more eccentric submissions will be eliminated in the next phase — including perhaps anime entry “The Laws of the Universe: The Age of Elohim,...

Nicholas Britell has a leading three nominations from the Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards, with Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s nominees for music in visual media finding Britell in contention for both song and score for his work on Adam McKay’s satire “Don’t Look Up,” as well as a nom for TV score for “Succession.”
The Scl’s third annual awards program is slated for Feb. 1 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
Women composers and songwriters had a surprisingly strong showing this year. Fifteen of the 35 individuals nominated, or nearly 43% of the total, are female. They are nominees in all six competitive categories, and took all three slots for the newly established David Raksin Award for emerging talent.

When “Spirit Untamed” composer Amie Doherty was a kid, her mother used to write contemporary musicals for her local school, with lyrics that spoofs area politics or the news of the world. It’s where Doherty says she first got a taste for writing music that has carried her to a career as a composer and songwriter.
“She would come into my school, mortifyingly, and throw me in behind the piano and I’d have to play all the songs,” Doherty recalls in our “Meet the Experts” composers panel. “But more often than not everything went chaotically wrong on stage and the curtain would pull back and they’d be like play something, so I’d be live scoring this chaos on stage. I hated it back then but funnily, it taught me to think on my feet. So sometimes I think it all started there.”

For the Dreamworks Animation film “Spirit Untamed,” composer Amie Doherty had to straddle a difficult line: writing a musical score that worked for both the feature’s target audience of young kids and also their savvier and more emotionally mature parents.
“That’s something we talked about a lot. In particular, in some of the scarier scenes,” Doherty tells Gold Derby during our “Meet the Experts” composers panel. “Sometimes I would pull back and ask those questions. Like how scary can we go with this? It’s a family film but targeted to that younger audience. There are moments where we pulled back the tension a little bit because you have to be aware of the emotions of the children who are watching it. Similarly for some of the sad moments. “Black-ish” and “Little” star Marsai Martin and her Genius Entertainment production company have signed with UTA for representation in all areas.
In 2019, Martin starred in “Little,” a feature that she conceptualized, pitched, sold and then executive produced with Will Packer for Universal. The move made Martin, who was just 14, the youngest person to executive produce a major Hollywood film. Directed by Tina Gordon and co-starring Regina Hall and Issa Rae, “Little” went on to gross $49 million at the box office. Most recently, she voiced characters in Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s “Spirit Untamed,” as well as Paramount’s feature film “Paw Patrol.”

For Elaine Bogan’s animated feature film directorial debut, DreamWorks Animation’s Spirit Untamed, it seemed like there was a constant bit of kismet at play.
“When I was first called and contacted to become part of the Spirit franchise, I jumped out of my car,” Bogan told Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles on Sunday while sharing a panel with composer Amie Doherty. “I was sitting in the parking lot at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center just after having ridden my horse, so the timing of everything felt great.”
Bogan said she’d long held a deep affinity for the Spirit property, going back to the initial film in the franchise, 2002’s Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
“I’ve been an equestrian since I was a kid, and I grew up watching the first film until I broke the DVD in half,” she revealed.

It’s impossible to guess, some three months away from the nominations, what might be up for Oscar in the music categories. But we can’t resist trying.
The only sure thing seems to be that English composer Jonny Greenwood will be nominated for at least one Oscar and maybe two. The Radiohead guitarist has been nominated just once (for 2017’s “Phantom Thread”) but has lately stepped up his film score output and has no fewer than three talked-about films in contention: “Spencer,” the Princess Diana movie, for director Pablo Larrain; “The Power of the Dog” (pictured), the Benedict Cumberbatch western for director Jane Campion; and “Licorice Pizza,” for his frequent collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson.
Eleven-time nominee (and winner for the original “Lion King” in 1994) Hans Zimmer seems a likely entrant for his moody, evocative, choral-based score for the sci-fi epic “Dune.” Another 11-time nominee, Alexandre Desplat, may be a...

Pressing play on a song can transport you back in time and rustle up memories from your favorite movies, or maybe even a personal experience. We might not always notice, but musical soundtracks are a major part in the evolution of cinema. Although soundtracks tend to differ from film scores in that they’re usually inspired by a film vs. written specifically for it, but sometimes the movie soundtrack is just as big (if not bigger) than the film itself.

Jake Gyllenhaal opened up to Howard Stern (via The Independent) this week on the difficulties of acting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, describing it as “a whole different craft.” Gyllenhaal starred as Quentin Beck/Mysterio opposite Tom Holland in the 2019 summer tentpole “Spider Man: Far From Home.” The MCU entry grossed over $1 billion worldwide. Gyllenhaal said the script was always flexible while making the movie, with lines being substituted for better ones at any given moment.
“It’s hard, man. That acting is hard. All of it,” Gyllenhaal said. “That world is enormous. And I joined that world way into that run; a train that was already moving. Normally, I come in way early on and I get to figure it out.”
Acting in the MCU was such a dramatic change of pace for Gyllenhaal that it resulted in bouts of anxiety on set. Or as Gyllenhaal put it, “I was freaking out.

When Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman opened CinemaCon 2021, he became its mascot when he credited the strong box-office performance of “Free Guy” to the fact that “you can’t watch it at home. Go fucking figure!”
We took Rothman at his word and figured. Specifically, we ran the numbers for Universal, the first major studio to announce a consistent policy on theatrical windows and home availability. We looked at its 2021 releases, along with the studio’s 10 top-performing wide releases in 2019, both through their sixth weekends. Here’s what we learned: The results suggest that early PVOD had little impact on Universal’s theatrical grosses.
The studio premiered seven wide releases to date this year: “Nobody,” “The Forever Purge,” and “Spirit Untamed” went PVOD after three weeks’ play. “F9,” which opened to $70 million, was available on PVOD after 31 days. “The Boss Baby: Family Business” opened day-and-date for Peacock Channel subscribers. “Old,...
