If you’re a fan of Mel Gibson’s classic action flicks, be sure to stream them before they leave Max at the end of August.
All four “Lethal Weapon” movies and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome,” starring the late, great Tina Turner, will be leaving the streaming service. Luckily, you’ll have all month to watch them.
Watching the new “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” animated movie in theaters? Max has several films featuring the radical reptilians: the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze” (1991)
and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III” (1993), as well as the animated “Tmnt” (2007).
Kaiju fans will want to check out “Godzilla” (2014), “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” (2019), “King Kong” (1933) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” (2012).
Finally, if horror is your thing, six “Hellraiser” films and “The Ring Two” make great summer scares.
Here’s everything leaving Max in August 2023

With this production, a smash hit all over the world, Asian superstar Jackie Chan at long last went mainstream in the United States after cracking their movie market, after his previous starring attempts like “Battle Creek Brawl” (1980) and “The Protector” (1986) got him nowhere. Moreover, it went on to win the Best Action Choreography Award at the 15th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1996. “And just like that, I was a big star in America after fifteen years of trying.” Chan later wrote in his autobiography “Never Grow Old”.

Biopics ain’t Wikipedia entries. Lives never conform to a tidy narrative arc — even one as dramatic as Aretha Franklin’s. With Respect, screenwriter Tracey Scott Wilson and director Liesl Tommy did an admirable job condensing 20 years of the Queen of Soul’s tumultuous life into a mere two-and-a-half hours. Thanks to some impressive research and Jennifer Hudson’s captivating performance as the late icon, the film treats viewers to a host of her most transformative moments. You’re in the studio as Franklin finds the groove for her breakthrough hit,...

A hellfire and damnation preacher’s sermon blares from the car radio as Laura and her infant son David (Luke David Blumm; The Sinner) escape from the cult she was raised in. She’ll run as far and as fast as she can and build a new life and identity for them. But now, eight years later the past has caught up to her. It seems she can run, but there are some things neither she nor David can hide from.
First, she sees strange people surrounding his bed. People who are, of course, gone when help arrives. The police think she was sleepwalking. She knows better, she’s too busy having nightmares to go for a walk. Then David falls mysteriously ill, having seizures and vomiting blood. But whatever it is,...

When Cynthia Erivo was cast as Harriet Tubman in the 2019 biopic Harriet, the internet lit up with criticism. Erivo is English, the outcry went, how could she possibly do justice to a uniquely American hero? Her answer was a muscular, wrenching performance that earned her an Oscar nomination. Backlash surrounding her casting as another all-American icon, Aretha Franklin, in the National Geographic series Genius: Aretha (premiering March 21st), was barely a whisper. Perhaps people are finally learning not to underestimate Erivo. Or perhaps it’s just that anyone who’s...

Most parents have the odd stressful moment when they jokingly wonder if they’re raising a devil’s spawn. Unfortunately for Andi Matichak, that notion seems neither humorous nor hyperbolic in “Son,” wherein the star of David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” reboot has a more “Rosemary’s Baby”-ish problem on her hands.
This latest, Heartland-set feature from Irish writer-director Ivan Kavanagh (“Never Grow Old”) echoes his prior horror exercise, 2014’s “The Canal,” in that it similarly means to keep us uncertain whether our protagonist is bedeviled by supernatural peril or delusional psychosis. But that line isn’t trod quite so nimbly this time, and the film suffers somewhat from striking an oddly earnest tone (despite some gory bits) without necessarily being very convincing, when it might better have gone for straight nerve-jangling suspense. It’s an intriguing, watchable but mixed bag that Rlje Films is releasing March 5 to available theaters,...

Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, who died Friday at age 77, wasn’t just a pioneer and key popularizer of Jamaican music; he was also an essential bridge between the worlds of ska, rocksteady, reggae, and the great American R&b tradition. To celebrate the release of Never Grow Old – a brutal and brilliant old-school Western starring Emile Hirsch and John Cusack out 23rd September – we have a DVD up for grabs courtesy of Altitude Films.
Debauchery. Greed. Murder. Welcome to Garlow. This once-peaceful frontier town has become a den of vice after vicious outlaw Dutch Albert (John Cusack) and his gang arrived— and began gunning down their opposition. Undertaker Patrick Tate (Emile Hirsch) must now choose between the blood money he makes burying the murderers’ victims and the threats he and his family face in this intense and gritty western.
If you’re in the mood for an old-school style Western, brought bang up to date with plenty of blood and bluster, then you’ve come to the right saloon. Writer/director Ivan Kavanagh, the man behind the acclaimed 2014 chiller The Canal, delivers a handsomely mounted meditation on good versus evil in the old West,...

Irish comedies have won big at this year's Fleadh, while Patrick Wang's A Bread Factory scooped the Award for Best International Film. It's a wrap for the 31st edition of the Galway Film Fleadh, the Republic of Ireland's leading film festival. Yesterday, Sunday 14 July, the event came to a close after the screening of Ivan Kavanagh's new western Never Grow Old, starring Emile Hirsch and John Cusack in the lead roles. As always, the historic Town Hall Theatre hosted the awards ceremony. This year's edition saw the triumph of two Irish comedies – namely, Shelly Love's A Bump Along the Way, the recipient of the Award for Best First Feature, and Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman's Extra Ordinary, crowned Best Irish Feature. Incidentally, the latter also won the Best Film Award and the Audience Award at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival this weekend (see the news). Other prestigious.

John Cusack is set to star opposite Sasha Lane and Rainn Wilson in Utopia, Amazon’s straight-to-series adaptation of the British drama, written by Gone Girl author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn.
Utopia follows a group of young adults who meet online that are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organization after they come into possession of a near-mythical cult underground graphic novel. Within the comic’s pages, they discover the conspiracy theories that may actually be real and are forced into the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.
Cusack will play Dr. Kevin Christie. Charismatic and media-savvy, with a brilliant biotech mind and a philanthropic outlook. Christie altruistically wants to change the world through science. Child actor and Javon “Wanna” Walton also stars.

Aretha Franklin was at the peak of her career and her creative powers when her gospel album “Amazing Grace” was released in 1972. (It sold more than two million copies and became her best-selling record.) Director Sydney Pollack was hired by Warner Brothers to make a film of Franklin’s recording session for this album at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, but Pollack didn’t use a clapperboard to synchronize picture and sound at the beginning of each take, and so he was unable to complete the movie, which sat in storage for 38 years.
The footage was handed over to producer Alan Elliott in 2008, and Elliott managed to salvage the project, but then Franklin sued him and prevented him from showing the movie at various film festivals. After Franklin’s death this year, Elliott was given the go-ahead by her estate to finally show “Amazing Grace” in theaters,...

Two of my favorite actors, and especially actors who aren’t given enough juicy roles in the industry, happen to be John Cusack and Emile Hirsch. Both are talented actors who have had brushes with Oscar but never quite gotten to that Academy Award nomination. The former has been somewhat stuck in a rut of generic action outings of late, while the latter just isn’t working enough. To see them together in something always seemed like a treat in the making. Well, this week brings them face to face in a quality little Western called Never Grow Old. The film is a nice little effort, buoyed by strong work from the both of them. This is a Western, in all of its simple charm. Taking place in the peaceful frontier town of Garlow, home to Undertaker Patrick Tate (Emile Hirsch) and his family, we’ll see it turn into...

Not to be confused with the hit World War I Documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old” by Peter Jackson, “Never Grow Old” is a dark Western and tells a completely different kind of story. Set in 1849 frontier America, a different era but still reminiscent of “The Witch” in tone, an Irish undertaker profits when outlaws come into his town, but his family comes under fire as the death toll rises.

"Do you feel proud of yourself?!" Saban Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie western titled Never Grow Old, which is a shortened version of the original working title Where We'll Never Grow Old. This gritty western takes place at an American frontier town. The plot is about an Irish undertaker who profits when outlaws take over a peaceful town, but his family comes under threat as the death toll rises. Emile Hirsch plays the undertaker, and the cast includes John Cusack, Déborah François, Antonia Campbell-Hughes, Danny Webb, Anne Coesens, Blake Berris, Paul Reid, as well as Léa Seydoux. Another western about a bunch of outlaws roughing up a town? How original. The cinematography in this looks so bad, so poorly lit in every scene. Don't think this dastardly new western is going to impress anyone. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Ivan Kavanagh's Never Grow Old,...

A late entrant into the Oscar documentary race could prove a formidable contender.

The long-in-gestation remake of Channel 4's dark drama series, Utopia, is finally heading to Amazon Prime Video.
Amazon is conjuring a U.S. remake of the popular U.K. TV series, Utopia, adapting a story centered around a group of young-ish people who are hunted by a shadowy organization after they manage to get hold of a once-thought-mythical graphic novel which details all manner of conspiracies that turn out to be disturbingly true.
After a previously-mooted HBO version from David Fincher fell apart in 2015, Amazon would make the April 2018 announcement of a pickup for a 9-episode first season for Utopia, with Gillian Flynn pulling the strings as writer and executive producer, and it looks like we might finally get some resolution to the story, which was left hanging on the original 2013-2014 U.K. Channel 4 series after two short seasons of Dennis Kelly's creation.
