A near-1,000 title comedy library for the Just for Laughs comedy festival has been picked up by Amuz Distribution as part of a court-directed bankruptcy process.
Amuz Distribution, the parent of Quebec City-based ComediHa!, said it acquired the comedy programming catalog after the parent company of Montreal’s Just for Laughs festival, Groupe Juste Pour Rire Inc., agreed to sell select assets as part of bankruptcy protection proceedings.
Amuz has hired Carlos Pacheco as director of monetization and Ott to distribute the comedy programming branded as Juste pour rire and Just for Laughs, the Gags. Pacheco most recently worked as director of Ott/Fast channel strategy and operations for Just for Laughs.

Robbie Praw is exhausted but he wouldn’t have it any other way.
The vice president of stand-up and comedy formats at Netflix is riding high after the Roast of Tom Brady, a live special that was two years in the making that he considers a huge success.
The three-hour live special, which landed right in the middle of the Netflix Is a Joke comedy festival, notched more than 2 million viewers and generated heaps of press coverage (including many stories on this very website). Praw sees landing Brady for the roast as a great example that, in the wake of the special’s success, opens the door for pretty much anyone to take the hot seat going forward.
Despite the overwhelming success of the Brady roast, Praw — the former Just for Laughs programmer who has been with Netflix since 2016 — isn’t ready to talk about plans to run the same play again.

“Hacks” opened its first episode of its first season with a bravura tracking shot that followed its stand-up star Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) from door to casino floor to backstage to stage of the Palmetto Casino. The opening shot of Season 3 echoes that original — but with several twists.
The biggest one is the reveal that the figure we’ve been following from behind, wearing Deborah’s sequined jacket from the pilot episode, hair done up in the exact same way, is actually a lookalike. She’s one among many Deborah Vance-ettes, so to speak, at the launch of slot machines themed in the actual comedienne’s honor.
It’s a strong opening statement from the show’s co-creators Jen Statsky, Lucia Aniello, and Paul W. Downs, one that tells us exactly the ride we’re going to be on in Season 3 of the Max series. “Hacks” isn’t just mining comedy bits.

Netflix has picked up an untitled documentary about the Montreal Expos and the events surrounding the Major League Baseball team’s departure in 2004. The doc, which the streamer has confirmed exclusively to Variety, reps Netflix’s next original project out of Canada.
The doc is the first greenlit under Netflix’s new creative partnership with Montreal-based Attraction. Netflix signed a first-look deal with Attraction last November, for French-language film projects to be developed and produced by the company.
Jean-François Poisson will direct the untitled baseball doc. Marie-Christine Pouliot, Attraction’s head producer, documentary, and Richard Speer, president of Attraction, will executive produce.
According to Netflix, the film explores the setbacks that led to the departure of the Expos from Montreal and how the loss of an MLB team in Montreal continues to spark debate 20 years later.

November comes with many things; crisp days of dwindling daylight, falling leaves and dropping temperatures. It comes with bustling grocery stores, hours prepping Thanksgiving dinners, unbuttoned trousers and Black Friday sales. But November also comes with complicated feelings for many Indigenous artists.
Native American Heritage Month can oftentimes feel like the only time of year when people are interested in hearing Indigenous stories; the one moment where our voices are collectively uplifted, only to be cast aside again Dec. 1. But to limit the celebration and wealth of our languages, cultures, and history of our communities to a mere 30 days is a disservice to us all.
These ten projects from artists across Turtle Island, spanning multiple mediums, each invoke a sense of pride, resilience and love, and mark some of my favourite pieces of art — Native or not.
As November blows by, I encourage readers to spend the rest of it curling up with these 10 hilarious,...

During a panel discussion on faith and comedy at the Just For Laughs festival on Saturday, Ramy Youssef talked about his father foretelling the Hollywood actors strike when offering early career advice.
Youssef, who portrays his Muslim faith with both devotion and defiance in his Hulu series Ramy, told the comedy festival audience about his Egyptian-born father discouraging him early on from becoming an artist and entertainer because he’d have to provide for his family one day. “He was always like, ‘This is a beautiful hobby for you to have. Grow the hobby.’ But I remember him clearly saying, ‘One day, real life is going to start,’” he recounted.
The current industry shutdown as Hollywood actors on picket lines seek fair pay, including residuals from streamers, has that warning from his traditional accountant father ringing in his head. “Now we’re in the strike, and, well, here it is!

The Office star Rainn Wilson came to the Just for Laughs comedy festival to talk seriously about spiritual suffering and “anxious discontent” people feel everywhere.
He wasted no time before addressing the recent media storm he caused when he shared during an interview with Bill Maher on his Club Random podcast that he felt “mostly unhappy” while starring as Dwight Schrute on the NBC sitcom for nine seasons. “I literally made dozens and dozens of headlines when I revealed on Bill Maher’s drunken, smoky, rambling podcast … that I had been deeply unsatisfied at times while working on The Office,” Wilson recalled during a keynote address in Montreal on Friday.
Wilson, it turns out, did a redo at the comedy festival after appearing to be ungrateful and unfulfilled after his success on the popular sitcom. “Dozens and dozens of outrage-inducing clickbait articles for digital surfing pleasure: ‘Wait. What? That weird...

For stand-up comics gathered at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal this week, booking club dates across North America and arena dates worldwide represents far more than a way to stay busy and pay the rent during the Hollywood writers and actors strikes.
It’s what live comedy artists do year-round, taking to the road or TikTok and YouTube to hone their craft and build fan followings with an eye to global stand-up touring as the pinnacle of their profession. The result is a strike-proof Just For Laughs festival barely impacted by the current Hollywood industry shutdown as SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America look to settle contract talks with the AMPTP, representing major studios and streamers.
“We know the heart of what we do is stand-up and comedy and that is not affected by the strikes,” Robyn Kaszor, vp of festivals at Just For Laughs, told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

The 2018 edition of the Just For Laughs comedy festival has wrapped up in Montreal, but before its conclusion, several up-and-coming creators snagged deals with producers and distributors. The winners have been announced in the Just For Laughs ComedyPRO pitch competitions, with Jorja Hudson and Brittany Tomkin's project Myrtle & Willoughby snagging the "Stand Up & Pitch “Beyond The Box: Playing It Short presented by Some Spider Studios in conjunction with Tubefilter.

Kevin Hart is telling aspiring filmmakers to Eat My Shorts. That's the name of a contest, now in its second year, run by Hart's Laugh Out Loud network and the Just For Laughs festival. Ahead of the 2018 edition of Just For Laughs, which will begin in Montreal on July 11, Hart and co. are seeking short film submissions from comedy creators, one of whom will ultimately win a $7,000 development deal with Laugh Out Loud.
Eat My Shorts submissions are expected to appeal to "multicultural, millennial" audiences, and the contest rules specify that "a diverse cast and/or filmmakers" is a must. And, of course, they should be funny.
Submissions for the contest are currently open and will remain so until May 31. On June 27, ten semifinalists will be shared on the Laugh Out Loud website, where viewers will be able to vote for the projects that deserve one of five spots in the Just For Laughs lineup.

The Just For Laughs Group (aka Jfl) is a 30-something year old comedic institution with a fantastic URL (you can find it online at hahahah.com) a singular goal: make people happy. To acheive it, Jfl has focused on four major initiatives, including 1) comically-oriented television production; 2) live shows and Canadian tour dates for some of the biggest comics around (e.g. Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, Kevin Hart); 3) talent management; and 4) festivals. That last one is perhaps for what Jfl is most well known. This year marks the 36th iteration of the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, an event which brings roughly 1.35 million visitors to the city each summer to consume high-quality comedy programming, see nascent and established acts, congregate with industry executives and insiders, get some business done, and have a few laughs.
It's a great event and you can be part of it by way of Stand Up & Pitch: The Comedy Content Search.

Produced as a feature – 4 TV half-hours – and as a 13 episode web series, Sos: Save Our Skins is the tale of two hapless British geeks who wake up in New York City to discover that the entire human race has vanished. But as they explore the seemingly empty world before them, Ben (Nat Saunders) and Stephen (Chris Hayward) soon realize they’re not alone after all. This new comedy sci-fi adventure launched on FEARnet in the U.S. in April on its new “Twisted Comedy” block and on Blue Ant Media’s Bite TV in Canada. This U.K.-Canada coproduction was produced by Steve Coogan and Henry Normal’s Baby Cow Productions in the U.K. and by Duopoly in Canada.
“We discovered Sos: Save Our Skins in a pitch session at the Just For Laughs Conference and were determined to find a way to finance it,” said Catherine Tait , Executive Producer. “Co-productions are challenging but in the case of Sos, the talent and final results were entirely worth the effort!”
Sos: Save Our Skins was created, written by and stars two of Britain’s in-demand comedy writing teams, Nat Saunders and Chris Hayward. Together they have contributed to hit U.K. shows such as Big Train (BBC), Smack the Pony (Channel 4), Trollied (Sky) and Fit (Cbbc), and created the popular web series Misey Bear(BBC). Sos also stars Hannah Spear (Versus Valerie, Sexy Nerd Girl) as Kill the cannibal and Peter Serafinowicz (Shaun of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) as the voice of Andrew the Alien.
A sci-fi, comedy and horror homage, Sos: Save Our Skins sends Ben and Stephen on a desperate journey to find their loved ones, escape the jaws of death and work out why they’re two of the few remaining people on Earth. But the answer to the mystery is bigger, crazier and more apocalyptic than they could ever have imagined, and it puts the fate of the planet into their very stupid hands.
“Sos: Save Our Skins is part road movie, part sci-fi fantasy, part buddy movie, and even has a twisted love story at its heart, even if one of the lovers is a mass-murderer,” said Director and Producer, Kent Sobey.
The film version of Sos: Save Our Skins premiered at the 39th Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival in February, where Sorespot Movies observed, “[it] does not hold back with the comedy or the wildness of the plot”. The film also screened at the International Horror and Sci-fi Film Festival in Phoenix and the Sci-Fi London Film Festival (April 24 – May 4, 2014). It will screen at the St. Tropez International Film Festival (May 12 – 16, 2014).
The film was produced in association with the Independent Production Fund and with the participation of BBC Worldwide in the UK, FEARnet in the U.S. and Blue Ant Media in Canada.

Contrary to his "Parks and Recreation" character Ron Swanson's trademark no-nonsense stance toward digging in deep and talking about his feelings, it is clearly difficult for actor Nick Offerman to reel in his nostalgia for Chicago, the city where his acting career first took wind.
The Minooka, Ill.-born actor, who now calls Los Angeles home, has earned a cultish following over his four seasons on the NBC series centered on Leslie Knope and her crew of Pawnee, Ind., bureaucrats. And with the show only gaining in popularity, that following shows no sign of dissipating any time soon.
In advance of a pair of performances of his one-man "American Ham" show Saturday in Chicago as part of the Just For Laughs festival, HuffPost Chicago spoke with Offerman about his early acting days, Cubs fandom and, of course, the iconic libertarian character who is at least partially responsible for sparking a nationwide facial hair revolution.

Comedians Nick Offerman and Craig Robinson, best known for their roles of Ron Swanson ("Parks and Recreation") and Darryl Philbin ("The Office") respectively, have entered a appropriately-timed round two of their Cubs vs. Sox debate as party of New Era's latest ad campaign.
Last month, Offerman, a Cubs fan who was born and raised in Illinois and got his comedy start in Chicago, and Robinson, who grew up on the city's South Side and loved the Sox, exchanged barbs about each other's favorite teams while sitting in a fictional Chicago bar called The Dividing Line.
This time around, the two have returned to The Dividing Line to test how far the other would go for their team.
"Would you give up deep-dish pizza for life if it'd guarantee the Cubs will win the World Series?" Robinson asks.
"I could stack up thin crust," Offerman responds in his signature deadpan. "So,...

They say that if you love something, let it go. Until now we didn't realize this also applies to comedy.
Comic and "Louie" star Louis C.K. has been doing stand-up forever, but only recently has he become a household name. It's not that he hasn't always been hilarious (as evidenced here) but for 15 years C.K. didn't do something that he later found vital to writing good jokes: throw them away.

Comedian Martin Short still relies on "Jersey Shore" to make fun of pop culture. Appearing as guest on Monday, April 25 episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", Short debuted a "red band trailer" of his new movie called "Jersey Short".
In the spoof movie, Short plays every character on the MTV reality show, wearing abs suit to portray The Situation and a poof to resemble Snooki. The so-called movie's plot centers on Snooki giving birth to a pickle while in the hot tub and The Situation accidentally eating her child.
Short was on "Kimmel" to promote his new, and real, movie "Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil". Jimmy Kimmel also welcomed guest actress Kat Dennings and musical guest Alter Bridge.
Short is lined up for the 2011 TBS Just For Laughs Festival which takes place June 14-19 at various locations. Joined by Steve Martin, he would appear at the Chicago Theater on June 19 in...

In the hit film "The Karate Kid," Jaden Smith plays a kid who learns the secrets of karate from Mr. Han (played by Jackie Chan) in order to defend himself against a group of bullies. The training that Chan's character puts Smith through is intense, and if there was any question that Smith himself whipped his 11-year-old body into shape for the role, he put it to rest during a trip to Beijing for the Chinese premiere of the film. During a Q&A session, Smith lifted his shirt to show off his abs (not unlike the Situation from "Jersey Shore"). The premiere...
