Everything I wanted and more
Reineke8610 April 2024
When X-Men TAS first aired in Germany, all the way back in 1993, I immediately fell in love with the show, the characters, the story, the world of the X-Men. I became a fan that day.

Now, 27 years later, I'm a fully grown man and still a fan. When I heard that they were going to continue this show, I was worried. With all the bad stuff Marvel has put out in recent years I couldn't imagine this show being anything more than mediocre. I expected a preachy show, that focused more on ideology and the current Zeitgeist. Boy, was I wrong.

X-Men '97 has superior writing. The dialogue is excellent, sometimes almost shakespearean. It comes with a fist full of nostalgia, easter eggs and fan service. The animation is pretty good, better than expected. Aaand...it has the theme song!

This show is everything I wanted and so much more. I love it.

Surpassing My Greatest Hopes, by Miles
bonksix12 April 2024
With only 5 episodes having aired so far, I'm already having trouble thinking of another show that rivals this quality lately. And I'm not exclusively talking about in animation either.

The animation is stunning. The characters are maybe even more endearing than ever. And the story is so incredibly meaningful and masterfully explored that I was engaged to the point of audible gasping, chills, and even tears at times.

I personally watch a lot of shows, animated and non. Disney has done plenty of fantastic shows, from Gargoyles to Gravity Falls. Yet I was still surprised by this revival existing at all, and blown away by its handling.

More like this, please.

Finally! Something that lives up to the hype!
scff-2282020 March 2024
I know it's only been 2 episodes and a 10/10 may be ambitious but I can't express how satisfied I am with this!

Recently, us nerds have had our hopes built up by reboots and live-action remakes that left us feeling betrayed and disappointed. Finally, X-Men 97 delivers!

I'm so happy they kept this kid friendly so my generation can enjoy it with our kids.

So far, the show is exactly like you remember it from your Saturday mornings. Nostalgia ensued within the first second.

I can't wait to see what this show brings us. My only complaint is that they didn't release the entire series immediately but I don't think Disney+ does that.

Thank you Chris Claremont! Well done Disney!

Hits all the right nostalgic notes!
arjay8820 March 2024
The nostalgia hit hard, but it was more than just a trip down memory lane. The writing and character development in these initial episodes were on point, adding layers to the already rich world of the X-Men. It felt like catching up with old friends who had grown and evolved.

What impressed me the most was how "X-Men '97" managed to capture the same feels of the original show while also elevating the storyline in just two episodes. As someone who watched the original series as a kid, I was beyond amazed to see how it was modernized while still paying respect to the og source material.

This show has reignited my love for these mutants and their struggles, and I have no doubt that it will continue to deliver the action, drama, and heart that fans have come to expect from the X-Men universe.

Bring on the next episode!

Nostalgia modernized
knight-2640420 March 2024
Had decent expectations as the original series is a classic (for me). This is a continuation but doesn't suffer from any particular issues usually seen when a production is revived after a long time. If anything, this revival exudes welcome nostalgia while fusing modern touches. Animation is solid and the action pieces are the highlights. Voice acting is just as awesome as it used to be (no irritating voice characterizations). Not to spoil anything but the characters are, as always, as real as could be to the original print comics. Am stoked and hope this series goes on for as long as it can. 9/10 from me for episode 1. Vinaka from Fiji.

I am excited for all the new episodes coming up and the future plotlines. I must say the show deserves 10 stars for its animation alone . It makes you excited for future episodes. Upgraded, modernized, and more mature sequel to the classic X-Men: The Animated Series
Artemur20 March 2024
This is the impression I got from just two episodes. This series deals with classic X-Men themes like prejudice, discrimination, hate, injustice, fear, and bigotry against mutants by humans again, but I felt like they were doing it in a more mature and improved way. I also gladly notice they didn't make a Wolverine show, and every mutant character is getting equal screen time and development, especially Cyclops getting what he deserves and shining as team leader. It's also welcome to see characters like Bishop and Morph join the X team. I liked Magneto's acceptance of Xaviers's human and mutant coexistence agenda and his decision to become a new leader of the X team because that made him a more three-dimensional and ambigious character rather than a one-note villain. This sequel is also very loyal and respectful to the old series and the nostalgic feelings of X-men fans. They are using the same character models, voiceovers, opening intro, closing outro, and music with improved and modernized animation. They didn't use the same opening stock footage intro from the first episode for the second episode's opening intro, adding new characters like Magneto and scenes to it, so obviously there is no laziness in this show. Overall, I got a very good impression from this reboot and sequel, and I'm looking forward to watching new episodes.

After first 2 episodes, it's pretty good
mluinstra20 March 2024
Greatings from the other side. Like most people, I love the 1997 X-men cartoon. I was worried when I heard about this new version, as Disney screws everything up these days, but so far I like it.

The animation is a bit off, which is wierd when the old version had better visuals, but it's ok. Hearing the old music was awesome. Seeing the sentinels again was also great. The voice works was great too, I think the got as many actors from the old days that they could.

Hopefully they continue or even improve things a bit. I'm not sure where the story line is going, but I hope it's good.

So far, so good. Let's hope it continues.

Epic!
wade_horton20 March 2024
A perfect blend of nostalgia and a freshness. I can't wait for more episodes and the story lines to be extended. I love the similarities of the 90s series and the new version. Many of the actors have been signed on for the series which is a great for continuity. I love that costumes, characters and stories have been updates for a more current experience. This new series is definitely worth a watch for fans of the original series as well as new fans. So far, the characters appear to have more thought out personalities, values and powers which is really cool to watch. I'm really keen to see how they integrate more characters into the cast.

Nostalgia is here!
davidtomasic20 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Just watched the first 2 episodes and was everything I wanted it to be. It's evolved and it was fun and gave great cliffhangers. Voice acting was great, animation awesome, looking forward to seeing how it evolves with the new storyline. Beau Demayo did a great job creating this and it sucks he was fired a week before he got to promote it. Also loving that they brought in Jean Greys clone story and the birth of Nathan Scott ( Cable). The theme song enough coming back to original form was enough to give goosebumps. Everything my childhood was came back. Loved it and excited that there's a second season ready to go!

It's ok. Seems like more pandering than anything else so far.
syntory23 March 2024
This series isnt too bad. I guess i'm in the minority who think this show is not on the same level as the original. Granted, I only watched the first episode but so far it seems to me that the focus of the show is more about nostalgia than story. It's more than just a nod, here and there, to the 90's show. It seems like the writers are just trying to pander to the audience who liked the old series. It's not terrible so far, but I think this series is not as good as the original. Some of the character personalities seem to have changed a bit.

I don't think this series is even close to a 9. It's ok. I'll give it a 6. The original series is an 8.

Warning: Spoilers
This is not a worthy successor to the original animated series. As an entry into superhero cartoons, the art is sub par compared to it's progenitor. It lacks the visual pop of the classic. The pacing is slow. Everything seems to move in stop animation format.

The costumes are good all things considered. Except Gambit. Gambit is presented as...corny. And a bad dresser. Not a fan of Storm having the mohawk in this one. A small detail but, important all the same.

The dialogue is presented as if written by AI. The phrase " My X-Men" appears much too often. Which means more than once.

The voice acting. It goes without saying some voice actors make the roles theirs. That is not a possibility here. We remember the X Men voices as well as our own. This voice crew does not have the childlike flair to make this enjoyable. The voices are presented as if they're always in a tunnel, that's filled with sulfur hexaflouride. And Rouge... if the voice was stereotypical in the 90s , this is downright insulting.

Overall, the allure was 90s nostalgia. That faded quickly. The show is still set in that 90s continuity. Unfortunately the people responsible for this series don't understand what made that cartoon a banger. This cartoon is a flop.

Love it
clyde_assee22 March 2024
This review captures what made the original great. I loved the writing in the first two episodes, it reminds me when I was a kid listening to those epic moments of grandeur dialog from the likes of Apocalypse, and famous quotes and wise sayings from Beast. This gave that same kind of vibe early on within the first two episodes.

This seems to pic up where the 90s Saturday morning cartoon left off. What was corny and cool for me as a kid, has been adapted now to be still good writing but not perceived as corny as an adult. In that regard they seemed to have nail their audience, they know that the people watching this would be in their 30s and 40s now. And it seems written for us.

Absolute perfection
MatthewCherrier21 March 2024
Now this is how you reboot a TV show!! This is the perfect follow up in every way, they update it just enough to make it feen fresh & modern but keep all the best elements of the original. The voices are all perfect, the new jubilee & morph are both fantastic. They do not hold back or disappoint from the first second the opening theme starts. The fight scenes are definitely taken up multiple levels, the first big fight in episode 1. Is absolutely epic!!! Storm absolutely KILLS IT - I'm so glad they are showing how powerful she really is. For the first time she's referred to as an omega level by a sentinel which is pretty awesome right before she does probably the coolest attack/show of power ever shown in any super hero movie or tv show, hands down - it's DOPE!!! This is the storm show now & I effing love it. I can't wait to see what else is to come & I hope they make at least 20 more seasons!!! LOVE IT!!!!!!

Great start to the show!

Warning: Spoilers
Got to admit I was a little worried and concerned about this, because Spider-Man and X-Men were precious to me growing up and they still are. But thankfully, I am loving this show so far! It's been a few years since I've enjoyed anything that Marvel/Disney has put out: but this is good, very good. Great voice acting, awesome animation, and updated action. The original run was a very mature kids show, and this seems like a very mature teen show. The characters are very on-point from the comics that I read growing up. Thrilled that they're bringing in the Madeline Pryor clone story, and the Storm losing her powers plot from the comics, so I'm interested to see where they're headed. Can't wait to watch the rest of the series.

Greatest continuation of a series ever!
nmcgwj14 May 2024
I love that they brought the original XMen Animated series back it was one of the best and truthfully is even much better with the newest one. I hope they bring The animated 90s Spider-Man back too. It's great having some of the original voice over actors back and it makes it keep the same style and that. I am really glad that they are continuing and have already done season 2 and greenlit season 3 and I believe even season 4. I hope Disney will realize that they need to bring back Beau Demayo because that was dumb having him fired over what?! It's sad that I heard it was over an only fans account but who cares seriously people are entitled to have a life.

I am Xstatic for X-Men 97
bulgariangeorge20 March 2024
Wow! What did I just watch. Two episodes in and I feel like I traveled back to the past, in my childhood bedroom dancing to that groovy theme music.

The writing of the first two episodes perfectly captured the feel of who the X-Men are and what they have represented in the comics and also in that 90s animated classic. Gambit, Storm, Jubilee, Cyclops, Wolverine, Rogue, Beast, Jean, Morph and Bishop are all back with a few other bigger surprises.

The music reuses themes from before but further improves on them to give it a fresh take. I had a few reservations regarding the animation but even that works. The team is back and looks great mostly (I have a few reservations about Rogue but hopefully the new voice and animation of her grows on me). Everything here captures that 90s magic and further adds on it.

Not just Nostalgia- but actual quality.
magnusmorris-0754430 March 2024
Seeing Xmen 97 produce strong original diverse characters without changing the source material, great dialogue and intense musical scores, detailed high framerate motion for even minor scenes- suddenly it's like waking from a silent nightmare that had been the gradual reduction in quality of animated comic book adaptations in the past 2 decades. Comparing it to other current releases is like night and day.

It's almost a shame that they've had to borrow from a franchise nearly 3 decades old in order to justify simply producing quality content.

This is the greatest superhero animated adaptation in years, and deserves recognition for it. This could be Marvel's Mandalorian moment- finally getting someone in the drivers seat who knows what they're doing.

Far beyond nostalgia
alessonms21 March 2024
I was completely satisfied, I'm very happy Starting with the opening, which I didn't expect to be a completely faithful replica... seriously lol Seeing this iconic opening, revitalized and updated, is a delight for a fan lol The immediate effect of continuity is a very interesting point.

As soon as it starts, the scenography makes you forget that this is a new animation, and takes you straight to the 90s.

Every detail is impressive!

Of all the X-men adaptations, with just these two episodes, you can already see that this is the best version of each of the characters. Highlighting Cyclops, Storm and Magneto.

I think it's incredible that it's not just an aesthetic update, but a general update, where the dialogues also follow the update, the plot follows.

Unlike some problems in the classic, here you realize where the story is, and in a way feel a new atmosphere of possibilities.

Cyclops, I don't need any comments, right? Lol so I'm not going to say the obvious lol Now Magneto was my big surprise.

You notice a maturity and a very solid justification in his change and going to Xavier's side.

The producers are incredibly wise to work on these points.

And another incredible point is the dialogues. What maturity in each sentence lol It's very good Okay, it has that effect of a character explaining an obvious thing that has already happened, to give a situation to someone who is suddenly seeing it for the first time, but it is well dosed.

Just perfect
sokthesweet15 May 2024
I never had seen the original series, even though I had heard good things about it. However, I was very interested in X-Men '97 because the creators said that it wouldn't need previous knowledge to comprehend the events of this series and so I decided to watch it. And oh boy...was it good. This and Young Justice are the best superhero shows ever made and it's not even up for debate. X-Men '97 has extremely compelling characters, adapts masterfully (and in some cases surpassing the originals) many classic storylines, the episode duration is awesome (usually for animated projects the runtime is 22 minutes, but this was 32+ minutes), just everything. To be honest, I cannot find any fault with the series, outside the fact that it could have fleshed out some storylines a bit more, but it might have been for the better that theyrl kept it short.

Bad storytelling, random events
blueskyy_ng6 April 2024
You know why the original x-men was so great? Because the story was great, the writing was great, the characters were great, everything is just great. They were all unique individuals with their own personalities.

But this reboot, if you can even call a reboot has none of the above. The storytelling was horrendous. It's very fragmented, just bits and pieces here, and bits and pieces there. Everything just happened without rhyme and rhythm, episodes after episodes. They feel more like filler episodes than anything else.

What's equally as bad is there's no character development like at all. It's presumed that the audience already knew these characters. Problem is, looks aside, they hardly even feel like there're the same characters. They're like complete strangers living under one roof, with no friendship, kinship, structure, nor curriculum to tie or link them together.

I'd rather they make a fresh reboot than doing this because i don't enjoy this series one bit. 6/10 is already a high score from me.

Rewrite, but not terrible
a_sad_cow1 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Didn't finish the first episode, as I was hoping for a continuation but realized this is just what the creator wished the 90s version had been. Cyclops is featured front and center, and we even get the cheesy exposition "I'm the hero".

Wolverine is handled clumsily, and almost assuredly won't get the precision and care that made us fall in love with Wolverine in the 90s. He does have claws and an accent, but is clearly not the charismatic love interest for Jean Grey, nor the moral center of the team.

Morph is back, which was my first hint this was a rewrite. At least Storm is still awesome. That's something they got right in both animated versions, but fell short in most live action.

Also, Professor X is dead? Hopefully it's a fake death, for a dramatic introduction later, but I'm not so eager to get there. Think I'll just rewatch the 90s version.

Do not listen to the classic toxic community "old was better"
eneasmil23 March 2024
Definitely a great surprise, usually X-men adaptations were all kept under the same initial plot, finally we are seeing advance on the story.

Some people are complaining about the M outfit, looks like people never read a X-men comic before, this is exactly the outfit used on this specific point in the X-men stories.

I loved the fact that the powers are represented as they should be otherwise why would human fear their evolution?

The show has a real mature side, that creates a deeper sense to the story.

The first episode is the one bringing nostalgia and ends with a great jump to this new arc, now the second episode shows that the writers took this show seriously and want to tell us a good narrative about X-men's.

So stupid and so fun
jqsimms21 March 2024
Really wasn't expecting to be this entranced by the 90s animation, but felt like I was 15 again. They did leave a lot of cliffhangers when the original show aired, hopefully they will conclude some of the subplots. But geez, after digesting so much modern anime, I thought I would balk at the decision to resurrect the same animation style from the original series, not so. It's fun in a way that old-school cartoons captured, and has enough crisp (although 90s style) dialogue to be intriguing. I'm only into the second episode, but so far, so good. Do yourself a favor, watch it, but don't take it too seriously.
