Bob Yari’s startup mini-major Magenta Light Studios has found its first in-house film production in “Summerhouse,” a period drama set against the anxiety of the Vietnam War.
“Bombshell” and “Halloween” star Malcolm McDowell will lead the project with Jacob Ward, an up-and-comer who made his debut in Ray Romano’s 2022 film “Somewhere in Queens.” Ed Kaplan (“2 Graves in the Desert”) will write the script and direct, with Shelly Jonson as director of photography.
Production will begin in Connecticut this month. Moonstone Entertainment will represent the international sales, previewing for buyers out of Cannes’ Marche du Film.
“Summerhouse” follows college grad Ned Stern (Ward) awaiting his draft into the Vietnam War. Ned spends his last summer of freedom caring for a belligerent wealthy alcoholic man (McDowell) at his lakeside mansion, only to find himself falling in love with a free-spirited and wild girl while questioning his commitment to his country.

Exclusive: The Fall of the House of Usher standout Willa Fitzgerald and The Continental star Colin Woodell have been tapped as the leads of Pulse, Netflix’s first original medical procedural. They join previously cast Justina Machado in the drama series from first-time creator Zoe Robyn who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside veteran Carlton Cuse.
In Pulse, while the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center navigate medical emergencies, young ER doc Danny Simms (Fitzgerald) is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship.

We just learned earlier this week that Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) is on board to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1979 novel The Long Walk, and The Hollywood Reporter brings us some more information tonight.
The project had previously been set up at New Line, but THR reports that Stephen King’s The Long Walk has a new home at Lionsgate, with Lawrence in “final talks” to direct.
Additionally, they report that Jt Mollner (Strange Darling) will write the script.
THR also notes that Roy Lee (It) is on board to produce the upcoming movie.
“When you have enjoyed the strong creative collaboration and success that we have had working with Francis, you want to repeat that experience as much as possible,” said Joe Drake, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “We couldn’t be more excited about reuniting with him on The Long Walk.

The Long Walk has new spring in its step as Lionsgate is now behind a big-screen adaptation of the Stephen King book.
Lionsgate has picked up the rights to the 1979 dystopian novel, with Francis Lawrence in final talks to direct. Jt Mollner will pen the script. The move puts Lawrence back in business with Lionsgate, for whom he directed The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which is currently in theaters and has grossed more than $200 million globally.
Roy Lee is producing Long Walk with Lawrence.
New Line was previously developing the project with director André Øvredal and a script from James Vanderbilt before the rights lapsed in the summer of 2022. Now Lionsgate will begin anew with its own take.

Bill Block is out as CEO of Miramax.
The executive and film producer was hired in 2017. Block’s contract expired this week and was not renewed, sources said. He’s been rumored to be out for months. A representative for Miramax had no immediate comment on the matter.
Insiders said new leadership was necessary at Miramax given that Paramount Global, which owns a 49% stake in Miramax, is grappling with a volatile marketplace. Insiders believe the unit behind films like “Pulp Fiction,” “Sex, Lies, and Videotape” and “Shakespeare in Love” should be mining its own intellectual property for new projects, not acquiring finished films or snapping up distribution rights. Block is not the person to take them in that direction, as evidenced by his canning.
Miramax was founded in 1979 by disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein and his brother Bob. It became a transcendent brand and gatekeeper of independent films. Block was the...

The synopsis for Strange Darling really says it all. Written and directed by Jt Mollner the mysterious thriller is “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer”. Starring Willa Fitzgerald (The Goldfinch) and Kyle Gallner, who genre fans will no doubt recognize from Smile and Jennifer’s Body (just to name a few) Strange Darling is a cat-and-mouse story set over a short period of time, presented in a jumbled fashion like Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill (or any other Quentin Tarantino movie for that matter).
Honestly, the less you know about this one going in, the better. It does have a few cards hidden up its sleeve but the whole bloody affair really hinges on the ever-surprising performances of its two leads. Kyle Gallner is electric in pretty much everything you’ve seen him in and he’s just as engaging a performer here, but Willa...

Serial-killer movies are a dime a dozen these days, with the true-crime industrial complex exploiting the ill-deeds sprees of increasingly obscure murderers to keep up with audience demand. Anyone wary of the genre might balk at the idea of “Strange Darling,” a cat-and-mouse drama about the tail end of a murder spree, but to do so would be to miss out on an exemplar of the form. Writer-director Jt Mollner flips the script on this tired genre, crafting the cleverest thriller of its kind in a while with a mighty assist from a pair of killer performances by co-leads Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. Best experienced with as little foreknowledge as possible, “Strange Darling” demands a bit of patience, but it also rewards it.

After a brief prologue that promises – both via text and voiceover – a dramatization of the true story of the final killings of the most unique American serial killer of the 21st century, we are treated to a mesmerizing opening titles sequence set to a rendition of "Love Hurts," featuring a woman (Willa Fitzgerald) running through the woods in red scrubs. The next chapter introduces us to the man chasing her – flannel clad, aviators wearing, moustache rocking Kyle Gallner, whose character is referred to in the credits as The Demon. Strange Darling is the second feature by the writer/ director Jt Mollner, following Outlaws and Angels (2016), a revisionist take on western. It stands to reason to suggest that Strange Darling somewhat plays...

There’s a scene in Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling where Ed Begley Jr. makes breakfast. He chars sausages, unsheathes and melts a stick of yellow butter, then cracks a messload of eggs and leaves them to bubble while pouring out thick globs of pancake batter in a second pan. He layers the cakes with the eggs and encased pork meat and yet more butter before drowning the whole thing in whipped cream that promptly starts to liquefy. He places the mess in front of his wife (Barbara Hershey), who comically offsets the caloric mound by placing a single, wimpy red strawberry on top. This scene is almost certainly unintentionally illustrative of Moller’s approach to his sophomore feature: a twisty cat and mouse thriller so overstuffed with delicious elements that it’s constantly on the verge of becoming too much of a good thing.

“Do you have any idea the kind of risks a woman like me takes every time she decides to have a little bit of fun?” So says our female protagonist in writer/director Jt Mollner‘s Strange Darling, a film that dares us to question the roles men and women are expected to play. Are women just prudes who don’t love casual sex? Are men just rapist serial killers waiting for their next mark? What exactly are the boundaries of consent? Strange Darling asks these questions, making for a smarter-than-you’d-expect entry into the cat and mouse thriller genre.

The open road is a terrifying place for a young woman in the first look at “Strange Darling,” a horror-thriller from director J.T. Mollner set to premiere at this week’s Fantastic Fest.
Described as “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer,” the project stars Willa Fitzgerald (Amazon’s “Reacher”) and Kyle Gallner. Fitzgerald, known only in the film as “The Lady,” barrels down a highway in a red Ford Pinto in a clip exclusive to Variety, escaping Gallner’s mad pursuit. After shooting out her back windshield and trying to mow her down with a pickup truck, the cat-and-mouse game moves on foot through the wilderness.
“This film was a sort of dream (or nightmare) that I was compelled to bring to life. So much about it – the colors, the music, the overall visual aesthetic, and the characters were all so clear before we even shot anything.
