[last lines]
Shaggy Rogers: [the gang walk to Fred's mansion] Like, man, I really feel for Mr. Feist's pain. Losing your C&C character is... intense.
Scooby-Doo: It's OK, Shagdolf. It's OK.
Velma Dinkley: [the gang arrive at Fred's mansion] Fred, you left the door wide open!
Daphne Blake: [the gang enter the living room, spotless] Fred, when did you hire a maid?
Fred Jones: I-I didn't.
Shaggy Rogers: Then, like, who cleaned?
Judy Reeves, Brad Chiles: We did.
Daphne Blake: Fred, is that...
Velma Dinkley: Brad Chiles and Judy Reeves?
Fred Jones: Mom? Dad?
Brad Chiles: That's right Fred.
Judy Reeves: We're your parents.
Brad Chiles: [casually] And we're back.

A large part of me really did wish that "Web of the Dreamweaver" was one of the Scooby Doo episodes that grew on me, but it still is an uneven and promised more than delivered episode. Loved the premise, but quite liked but not loved the execution of an episode that began a lot better than how it finished. When it first began, "Web of Dreamweaver" had real potential to be one of the show's best episodes, but with a last act that felt like a different episode it was instead a lesser effort.
There are a lot of good things. To me, "Web of the Dreamweaver" is one of the best looking episodes of the second season. Especially in the incredibly atmospheric, wonderfully nightmarish and maze like Dreamweaver world. The psychological element also fascinates and unsettles. As well as the Dreamweaver world, what really makes "Web of the Dreamweaver" is the very David Bowie-like (think Jareth in 'Labyrinth' except creepier) villain Dreamweaver, very cool looking and creepy and design wise he is one of the ones of the show that stands out in uniqueness.
Most of the gang are well characterised and written, especially Scooby and Shaggy. Seeing a different side to the normally funny Stone was interesting and done well. Same with the ever intriguing role of Mr E. The voice acting is great, especially for the Dreamweaver. The music fits very well with the atmosphere while the writing is smart and mature without being complicated. The episode starts off incredibly well, the creepiness of the opening sequence truly unnerving and there is a nice spookiness throughout.
Really do wish however that the last third was as good as the rest of the episode but that was not to be. While creepy most of the time, the episode becomes really strange and muddled when the gang come closer to the truth. The denouement is a real disappointment and the thankfully non-obvious perpetrator and the ingenious way of how everything with the Dreamweaver was done saved it from being a complete dud. Otherwise, the motive and plan though of the perpetrator was beyond weird and to me it was extreme, didn't make much sense and trivialised what was a potentially great villain.
Another big reveal is present in the last act that moves the Crystal Cove mystery and for a mystery that had so much hype in the fandom at the time that doesn't come off as well as it ought to have done. It is one that should have been revealed later on in the season, this felt too soon seeing as we don't know the characters really in question. Velma's dishonest attitude bothered me and felt out of character.
Overall, great first half but strange second with a misconceived last act. Pretty good but not great, and it could easily have been the latter. 7/10.
