“Shōgun” is causing a lotta drama — in our Emmy predictions. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss our updated “Shōgun”-heavy drama picks and “Shōgun”-less limited picks. Plus: Our guest category predictions!
With second and third seasons of “Shōgun” in development, the FX series must compete in drama now instead of limited at the Emmys. The acclaimed epic definitely fortifies the previously weak drama field and became an automatic frontrunner (it’s still in second in the odds behind “The Crown”). How many statuettes can and will it win in drama? Can supporting favorites Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) hold off “Shōgun” fan faves Moeka Hoshi and Tadanobu Asano?

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.
Peter Travers (ABC News) noted: “Aniston and Witherspoon, plus star newbie Jon Hamm, power up the best season yet for...

With the June 13 start of Emmy nominations voting just three weeks away, the race is beginning to come into focus.
The drama series competition, which was looking incredibly bleak (with only one past nominee even eligible for a nomination this season, Netflix’s The Crown), is suddenly getting exciting. FX announced that Shōgun, which was expected to be a one-off limited series, will, in fact, be getting additional seasons, making it a drama series — and the new frontrunner for that prize and several related categories. But Amazon, far from conceding the category, is making a big push for its breakout rookie show, Fallout, which has amassed a sizable fanbase and overtaken Mr. and Mrs. Smith on the streamer’s list of priorities. (On Tuesday, they called in the big guns by having showrunner Jonathan Nolan interviewed by his big brother Christopher in front of a massive crowd of voters.

The first trailer for Deadpool and Wolverine smashed global records back in February by scoring 365 million views in 24 hours, and the Merc With a Mouth's MCU debut has now broken another pre-release record.
Tickets went on sale earlier this week with a new teaser (check it out below), and the CEO of AMC Theaters, Adam Aron, has now announced that the superhero team-up movie sold more tickets on day one than any other R-rated movie in the company's history.
This is just one theater chain, of course, but AMC is the biggest in the world, with the largest share of the U.S. theater market ahead of Regal and Cinemark.
The prospect of seeing Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson joining forces with Hugh Jackman's Logan is clearly a huge draw, and while it obviously remains to be seen how the movie ultimately performs at the box office, this is a very good sign.

Famous for his role as the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who and his appearance in The Crown, Matt Smith took on the role of Prince Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s massively popular prequel House of the Dragon. Taking place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, Smith recalled the choreography and fierce commitment that went behind his role as the Targaryen royal.

Amazon Prime Video has delivered a sublime hit the long-awaited TV adaptation of the video game “Fallout.” The post-apocalyptic sci-fi show depicts a Los Angeles 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse devastates the USA.
Created by Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, the series follows several story strands surrounding different characters, including vault dweller Lucy (Ella Purnell), Brotherhood of Steel squire Maximus (Aaron Moten), and a bounty hunter known as The Ghoul (Walton Goggins). The series has received rave reviews from newbies and devotees of the video game alike.
Lucy Mangan (The Guardian) observed: “For newcomers such as me, this intelligent, drily witty, immaculately constructed series set in the Fallout universe fully captivates and entertains on its own terms.”

Netflix’s epic royal drama The Crown came to its end last year showing Imelda Staunton’s Queen Elizabeth II torn between her wish for a calmer life and duty to serve her country as its rightful monarch.
The final episode also featured the Queen’s younger versions, portrayed by Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, in a short, yet defining sequence that later on turned into a concluding moment for the whole series.
Although both actresses’ comebacks to the show were a one-time option, their astounding performances received a raving reaction from both critics and fans, yet only one of them now has a chance to get a prestigious TV award.

Deadpool And Wolverine Bond Over A Beer In New Advert; Ryan Reynolds Shares Disclaimer For The Movie
Following yesterday's latest teaser for Deadpool and Wolverine, we have a new advert for Heineken Silver, which sees Wade Wilson and Logan take a break from beating the crap out of each other to enjoy a beer together.
The clip begins with Wolverine preparing to pop his claws, when the Merc With a Mouth reveals that he "borrowed" some of the mutant's adamantium in order to "create something special."
This footage won't be in the actual movie (unless it's even more meta than we realized), but we wouldn't be at all surprised if there's some blatant product placement in there!
In addition, Ryan Reynolds has released a very funny disclaimer for the upcoming movie in an effort to keep our expectations in check.
“We’re very excited to be joining you July 26. But we should set the table correctly. This film is as paper thin as a sequel to Battlefield Earth.

As previously reported by Variety in April 2024, Dame Helen Mirren, Sir Ben Kingsley and Pierce Brosnan are also attached to The Thursday Murder Club film adaptation, which is being directed by Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone director Chris Columbus. Mirren will of course play former spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play psychiatrist Ibrahim, and in something of a casting curveball, Pierce Brosnan will play former union organiser Ron. That just leaves police officers Donna and Chris, and handyman/fixer Bogdan as main characters still to be announced.

“The Crown” can only play a pair of Queens at the Emmys.
Emmy winner Olivia Colman, who portrayed Queen Elizabeth in the series finale episode of Netflix’s monarchy drama, is not eligible to submit in the guest drama actress race by only a few seconds. However, her co-star Claire Foy, who also portrays Her Majesty in her younger years and appears in the same episode, is eligible and will be the sole guest submission for the series, angling for her second win in the category.
The “Sleep, Dearie Sleep,” written by Peter Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry, clocks in at a robust 72 minutes, the longest of any episode across its six seasons. In the series’ final moments, Imelda Staunton’s Elizabeth looks back on the highs and lows of her reign as she grapples with the idea of handing the crown to Charles. Her younger self appears to...

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

The Taylor Swift as Dazzler rumors first began when the singer's likeness was used for the musical mutant's album cover in X-Men: Apocalypse. Nothing ever came of it back then, but the rumors persisted.
Speculation really kicked into overdrive when the pop megastar was spotted at the Kansas City Chiefs versus New York Jets game with Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) in 2023.
Levy was asked about the Dazzler rumors last year, and declined to confirm or deny Swift's involvement in the R-rated threequel.
“I’m going across the board. ‘No comment’ because that’s a double whammy. That’s Taylor-related. And it’s McU-related. I’m no dummy. You’re going to have to wait and see.”
Earlier today, shortly after tickets for the movie went on sale, Reynolds was asked about a potential part for Swift.

Peter Morgan, creator of Netflix’s award-winning drama “The Crown,” is weighing in on King Charles III’s new, highly divisive portrait.
“The picture is at least partially successful, I think,” Morgan told me Friday at an FYC event for the “Crown’s” final season. “I belong more to the positive side, but I’m not trying to give it five stars. I’d certainly go three or four out of five. I like that it’s vivid, I love that it’s got us talking, I love that it arouses emotions. It immediately makes you want to look more closely.”
The portrait, the first of the king since his coronation, was unveiled at Buckingham Palace on May 15. The 8.5 by 6.5-foot painting by British artist Jonathan Yeo proved to be divisive for its bold red hues. The canvas depicts King Charles III wearing a Welsh Guards uniform while holding a sword.

Marvel debuted a new 60-second promo (check it out here) and poster for Deadpool and Wolverine earlier today when tickets went on sale, and we now have an updated synopsis for the studio's "most significant mistake to date."
We've seen a few different versions (most likely placeholders for merchandizing purposes) of this logline already, but this is by far the most unserious yet!
“Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake to date - Deadpool & Wolverine," it reads. "A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. When his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctantlier... reluctanter? Reluctantest? He must convince a reluctant Wolverine to - F*ck. Synopses are so f*cking stupid.”

Tickets for Deadpool and Wolverine are now on sale, and Marvel Studios has marked the announcement with a new teaser and poster.
The minute-long promo for Wade Wilson's Marvel Cinematic Universe debut only features a few new shots (Wolverine's mask is still nowhere to be seen), but there is a funny, if typically juvenile, gag right at the end, as the Merc With a Mouth asks Logan to "hold still" while he finishes... pulling his sword out.
The poster spotlights Wade and Wolvie locked in combat. It's a pretty cool one-sheet, but again, it seems like the studio has decided to keep the iconic mutant's full costume under wraps until audiences are sitting down to watch the movie.
This would usually be a smart strategy, but the impact will be lessened somewhat by the fact that we've already seen so much promo art spotlighting the mask. Maybe Marvel should...

Taking part in the combined in-person and virtual discussion for Season 6 were cast members Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II), Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana), Lesley Manville (Princess Margaret) and Khalid Abdalla (Dodi Fayed), plus executive producer/writer Peter Morgan, casting director Robert Sterne, set decorator Alison Harvey, composer Martin Phipps, hair & makeup designer Cate Hall, and costume designers Amy Roberts & Sidonie Robertsas.

An epic drama series about Iran’s last monarchy is in the works, Variety has learned.
Inspired by “The Crown,” Netflix’s sweeping dramatization of the British royal family, “The Last Shah” is set to span four decades beginning during World War II, when the young monarch, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, ascended to the throne, and ending in 1979 with the Islamic Revolution and U.S. embassy hostage crisis in Tehran.
The series, which is in development at writer Morrie Rosmarin’s production company Random Access Media, will follow the story of Pahlavi and his third wife, Queen Farah Pahlavi. Often compared to Jackie Kennedy, the stylish and progressive queen was a champion of women’s rights and modern art. She married the Shah in 1959 clad in a dazzling Dior gown embroidered with silver thread and pearls, designed by Yves Saint Laurent.

A very impressive - and very bloody - independent fan-film has been shared online, and it reimagines Wolverine as a Viking warrior in Medieval times.
Directed by Godefroy Ryckewaert, the ultra-violent Logan The Wolf begins with a group of mercenaries approaching this far more ruthless and bloodthirsty take on the iconic mutant hero, who has been accused of brutally slaughtering anyone who encounters him - including women and children.
Logan, who refers to himself as "Fenrir's Fury," makes short work of his attackers in extremely gruesome fashion, before being approached by a man who offers to join forces so they can both rid the world of the human "animals."
We don't want to spoil exactly who this character is supposed to be, but be sure to keep watching for a short post-credits scene.
Check out Logan The Wolf below, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

When HBO’s House of the Dragon premiered, one of the most controversial casting decisions was the choice of Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen. Alongside fans of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, even critics were skeptical that the Doctor Who star could bring the necessary depth and complexity to the role of the rogue prince.

However, despite the massive backlash that started after Matt Smith’s casting, showrunner Ryan Condal and casting director Kate Rhodes James took a gamble on Smith’s abilities. Eventually, it paid off wonderfully, when The Crown veteran proved the critics wrong in his portrayal of the Daemon.

[This story contains major spoilers from the May 17 episode of Doctor Who, “Boom.”]
During Russell T Davies’ first time in charge of BBC behemoth Doctor Who, one of its regular writers often wrote some of its more memorable and popular stories.
Scottish writer, Steven Moffat, had made a sizable name for himself in the U.K. with television shows such as Press Gang and Coupling, and would bring new terrors to young Whovians in the form of Gask Mask Zombies and the Weeping Angels. When Davies came to leave the show, Moffat was the natural choice to replace him.
He cast Matt Smith (The Crown, House of the Dragon) as the youngest ever actor to play the role and made huge strides in the U.S. cementing Doctor Who’s popularity. Moffat would leave the role of showrunner after seven years (and after casting Peter Capaldi to play Smith’s successor).

In honor of Season 3 of “Bridgerton” premiering, the streamer dropped a teaser for the spin-off on Friday. The special stars Tiffany, 27, and Shanti, 28, as the lucky couple who experience all the luxury and decadence of the Regency Era in a lead-up to their big day.
The New Yorkers, who first met in high school, have been together for 10 years.
“I wasn’t really looking for someone, and Tiff wasn’t really looking for someone. We were really just in our own bubble in life, going through life and finding ourselves,” Shanti told Tudum. “We were having those tough conversations as friends. We got a stronger connection through that. So that made us be like, ‘Wait a minute, actually, I could see this person as my person.

Dear friends, we've been waiting for this for an incredibly long time, and it's finally happened! The long-awaited third season of Bridgerton landed on Netflix yesterday, May 16, two years after Season 2 was released. But amidst all the incredibly high and loud excitement among viewers of one of Netflix's flagship series, there has been fan angst over the streaming service's policy. After all, we waited two full years to finally get... just four episodes of the new season.
Yes, folks, back in December 2023, it was announced that Bridgerton Season 3 would be split into two parts, with a one-month difference in release. For many, this is very disappointing news, and while the Part 1 finale left many on the edge of their seats, such a long wait left an underwhelming impression. So why was Season 3 split in half, and is Netflix's decision to do so putting Bridgerton's popularity at risk of plummeting in the near future?...

Challengers is still playing in some theaters. However, if viewing this steamy movie in public may be too much, viewers can now watch the romantic triangle entanglements from the privacy of their own homes. The Zendaya tennis tryst film has just been released on digital platforms. It may also be expected to hit Prime Video soon since the film is an Amazon original. While movies like Madame Web get mercy releases on digital after a month due to poor performances, Challengers actually enjoyed quite a bit of success for being the scope of film it is and the nature of the story.

A possible runtime for Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine has been revealed, and if accurate, it would make the Merc With a Mouth's MCU debut the longest Deadpool movie yet.
According to an AMC Theatres listing, Deadpool and Wolverine will clock-in at 2 hours and 7 minutes. The previous film ran for 2 hours, while the first Deadpool was quite a bit shorter at 1 hour, 48 minutes.
In addition, some new international promo banners have found their way online. They reuse the images from previously-released posters, but pull back to let us see a little more of Wade Wilson and Logan.

“Shōgun” is officially in the drama race for the Primetime Emmys.
FX has confirmed that the once limited or anthology series heavyweight has been officially submitted and accepted in the drama categories, where it will compete against Netflix’s “The Crown,” Apple’s “The Morning Show” and Prime Video’s “Fallout.” In addition, the network has shared exclusively with Variety the complete list of 40 Emmy submissions, which includes six submissions for directing, four for writing, and two eligible guest actors. HBO’s “Game of Thrones” currently holds the record for most nominations in a single year with 32. Could FX break the monumental record?
Following the announcement that FX, Hulu, and the estate of James Clavell — who authored the novel — are working on developing more seasons of the critically acclaimed series, “Shōgun” is now officially eligible to compete in the drama races after being commissioned as limited. The move puts the...

How do the makers of Bridgerton keep a fandom as dedicated as theirs guessing? How does the Netflix show surprise a core of fans who are so intimately familiar with Julia Quinn’s source books that they’re anticipating every blush and ball before it even gets to the screen?
One solution, as has happened in season three, is to play with the established order of things. Though Benedict Bridgerton’s romance follows on from that of his brother Anthony’s in Quinn’s book series, the TV show has (rightly!) vaulted over that to first show the love story between Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington.
Their other answer? Invention. In addition to TV-only characters Madame Delacroix, Will and Alice Mondrich and Queen Charlotte herself, a new raft of invented-for-the-show characters appear in season three. Here they all are, along with info on the actors playing them, plus a couple...

The British Royal Family is often a source of scandal. You can verify this thanks to The Crown by Peter Morgan or a simple attempt to Google the latest news from Buckingham Palace: you will see the recent "disappearance" of Kate Middleton and Prince Harry's tossing between the US and UK, and the false statement about the death of the King.
A recent movie released on Netflix depicts another high-profile story involving the son of Elizabeth II. The scandal reached its climax in 2019, when the prince gave an interview to the BBC and created a wave of criticism against him. It was the historic conversation that became the subject of study by director Philip Martin in the film Scoop.
The movie is based on a book by Sam McAlister, the same producer who finally persuaded Prince Andrew to break his silence.

The Crown showrunner Peter Morgan reflected on the series’ final season at a Netflix Fysee event on Monday, touching on how Queen Elizabeth’s death affected his desire to continue the show.
In a conversation with LA Times critic Robert Abele, Morgan noted how he always thought of the show “as a story about the two houses, Buckingham Palace and Downing Street, and I never really thought of it as a story about the royal family. But of course, that’s all anybody thinks it’s about, the royal family, whereas I think of it is about the two houses.”
Admitting, “This is going to sound mad, but I’m not really that interested in the monarchy,” Morgan continued, “Mothers, sons, wives, husbands, that’s really what it’s about. And, of course, at the heart of it is this woman, this rather extraordinary woman. And for me the minute she died,...

How do you neatly wrap up a series that’s covered 60 years of history over six seasons?
The finale of The Crowndoes just that. The groundbreaking drama, which chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and the lives of the royal family, comes to a close with Season 6’s touching Episode 10.

Princess Diana’s fate in The Crown Season 6, Part 1 is no surprise, but the events leading up to her death still remain a mystery. Reprising her role in the final season of Peter Morgan’s groundbreaking series, Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal explores the final weeks of the late Princess of Wales’ life. Since the character’s introduction in Season 4, then played by Emma Corrin, Diana’s life has been far from a fairy tale. Although her story ends in tragedy, the first four episodes of Season 6 tell of her whirlwind romance with Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla), a film producer and the son of businessman Mohamed al-Fayed (Salim Daw).
“It’s a really unique challenge as an actor to portray those days because we know where the story is going,” Debicki says in the featurette above. Adds Abdalla, “It’s not about knowing the ending. You know the ending. It’s...

Paris-based The Party Film Sales and Heather Millard of Iceland’s Compass Films have reunited with “When the Light Breaks” director Rúnar Rúnarsson on his next poetic filmic venture “O.”
The Icelandic film “When the Light Breaks” is due to open Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section May 15.
Headlining Iceland’s major international star Ingvar E. Sigurðsson (“A White, White Day,” “Fantastic Beasts, the Crimes of Grindelwald”), the 20-minute film “O” is a “humanistic and poetic story of a fragile man, trying to achieve a simple task where his main obstacle is within himself,” according to the official logline.
“We’re very excited to also accompany Rúnar on his new short film,” said The Party Film Sales’ Samuel Blanc. “O” and “When the Light Breaks” have a lot in common and resonate with each other. We’re confident distributors will be interested in programming both films in tandem: in the frame of special screenings,...

Sony Pictures Entertainment has seen operating income fall nearly 10% for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024.
The company’s operating income was $808M in dollar terms compared with $894M for the comparable period a year before, which was down 9.6%. Revenues crept up to $10.31B from $10.14B for Fy.
Sony, which is headquartered in Japan, said the Hollywood strikes had impacted its Pictures segment, which comprises TV production, motion pictures and media networks (including streaming).
Whereas in 2023 Sony had suffered from a lack of new theatrical product, this year the increased number and growth at streamer Crunchyroll helped to offset a decrease in series delivered due to the labor action and lower catalog licensing of motion pictures.
On the motion pictures side, full-year revenues were $3.74B, up slightly on the previous year, but TV fell from nearly $4B to just over $3.8B. However, media networks grew from $2.69B to $2.72B.

Bradley Cooper, who has 12 Oscar nominations, might soon add his first Primetime Emmy nod to his resume for playing himself on ABC‘s “Abbott Elementary.” ABC and awards strategists confirm to Variety that the studio has submitted the actor for guest comedy actor consideration for this year’s awards.
Earlier this year, the Television Academy changed the rules for submitting in the guest acting categories, stating, “A brief cameo appearance is not eligible for entry.” However, the vague description doesn’t explicitly state whether an actor like Cooper or even Kevin Hart, who appeared in last week’s episode playing himself over a Facetime call with Jeanine Teagues (Quinta Brunson), would constitute a cameo.
The rules further clarify the definition of a guest performer: “The minimum stand-alone and contiguous screen time for eligibility is 5% of the total running time of the submitted episode.”

Whether playing Di Kate Fleming in Line of Duty or a back-against-the-wall bomb disposal expert in ITV’s Trigger Point, Vicky McClure has mastered the art of procedurals over the years.
But in Paramount+ series Insomnia from The Crown producer Left Bank, in which she plays a career woman, Emma, who experiences a breakdown when she suddenly stops being able to sleep, the actor-producer bucked the trend.
“I feel like I’ve grown up, I’m 40 now,” McClure told an Insomnia Q&a in London late last month. “There’s a lot of procedural drama that I do and I enjoy it, but I was excited to step into something that felt different.” McClure added that she quite enjoyed walking in heels for the entirety of the series, for example.
McClure’s challenge was made trickier by the fact she has never suffered from insomnia – although “just a bad night...
