If you’ve ever played Yakuza (Like a Dragon), then you know how much the game is like a movie or TV show. So it’s no surprise that it’s the next video game series to get a real-life version coming to Amazon Prime Video later this year. Called “Like a Dragon: Yakuza,” the show will start on October 25, 2024, with the rest of the episodes coming on November 1, 2024.
According to the press release, the show will have six episodes and will be about crime and action. It will tell a new story based on the first Yakuza game from 2005. It’s about Kazuma Kiryu, who used to be in the yakuza. We all remember that he had to go to prison for his sworn brother, which caused a lot of strife in the organization. However, what’s interesting about the show is that the story will look at Kiryu...

Much like Majima Everywhere, out of nowhere today the official Ryu Ga Gotoku Twitter account and Amazon announced that the Like a Dragon video game series is inspiring a live-action series based on the life of Kazuma Kiryu. Titled Like a Dragon: Yakuza , the series will tell a story of Kiryu’s life that the games “have not been able to explore.” The series is set to be directed by Masaharu Take ( The Naked Director ) with scripts from Sean Crouch ( The 100 ) & Yugo Nakamura and Japanese scripts from Yasuhiro Yoshida and Kana Yamada. Ryoma Takeuchi, who is known as Kamen Rider Drive and the Red stand-in in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu , will play Kiryu. Masayoshi Yokoyama, the head of Ryu Ga Gotoku and writer for the Like a Dragon franchise since its inception in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, said “I have no doubt that fans of the series will be drawn to how...

In recent years, Netflix has made a lot of changes to its standard operating procedures, and one that is becoming increasingly part of its release plans is breaking up series into blocks. The world’s largest streaming service will release the second half of “Bridgerton” Season 3 in June looking to capitalize on the success of the first four episodes that were released last month. Also coming to the streaming giant this month will be the final season of fantasy drama series “Sweet Tooth,” the Glen Powell-led action comedy “The Hitman” and much more.

With a new month comes many new choices for Netflix viewers, and three of the choices stand out. June looks excellent on Netflix.
There is something for everyone and every situation, including Detective Pikachu and The Lego Movie for kids, The Divergent Movie for sci-fi fans, and the Conjuring trilogy for horror fans.
Another good option is the Godzilla Minus One movie, which, as Monsters and Critics reported, just dropped on Netflix.
All those are good options, but three top picks should not be missed: one for drama fans, a throwback for sci-fi fans, and one of the best coming-of-age films ever made.
The first is a Spanish offering named Raising Voices. It is an all-too-familiar tale of sexual assault that immediately grips viewers. Raising Voices, Episode 1, is streaming on Netflix today and should not be missed.

A sexy comedy featuring man-of-the-moment Glen Powell posing as an undercover hitman, Jessica Alba kicking ass in an all-action revenge tale, the inimitable David Letterman interviewing a new round of guests, the continuing saga of Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, the return of a beloved fantasy series and the story of the most iconic franchise in cheerleading are among the standout new additions to Netflix in June.
Returning in June on Netflix is the third season of the fantasy series Sweet Tooth. Based on the beloved comic book series created by Jeff Lemire, the show tells the story of society after it has been decimated by a virus and human-animal hybrids begin to appear. The focus of the show is Gus, a young half-human, half-deer boy who is looking for his mother. Season one of Sweet Tooth debuted in June 2021, with season two arriving last June. Netflix’s list of new releases for June 2024 look suspiciously like last month’s.
That’s because the biggest item on the schedule is Bridgerton season 3 once again. The final four episodes of Bridgerton‘s third season will premiere on June 13. Polin fans everywhere, rejoice! Other TV items of note this month include the third and final season of Sweet Tooth (June 6), Worst Roommate Ever season 2 (June 26), and That ’90s Show Part 2 (June 28).
Bridgerton aside, Netflix’s original movie options this month might be even more impressive than the TV slate. Richard Linklater’s Hitman, which stars Glen Powell as the titular assassin, premieres on June 7. That will be followed by documentary Black Barbie on June 19, the Jessica Alba-starring Trigger Warning on June 21, and romcom A Family Affair on June 28
Here’s everything else coming to Netflix this month. Note that Netflix marks its international offerings with that respective country’s two-letter country code.

With the box office being in dire straits, I feel a little awkward telling you to stay home and watch stuff on Netflix. Anyway, stay home and watch stuff on Netflix!
All kidding aside, summer is bearing down upon us, and that means unbearable, scorching hot temperatures. (Thanks global warming!) So, what better way to burn though your free time than by plopping yourself down in an air-conditioned theater and checking out the latest releases? After a relatively slow start to the year, June looks to turn things up a notch with some notable tentpoles. Tragically, however, you can't spend all of your non-working hours at the multiplex -- not even for the "Lord of the Rings" re-release.

Margot Robbie’s long-rumoured Sims movie has now reportedly got the green light from Amazon MGM.
The Sims is a game that most millennials grew up playing. We were immersed and invested in the intricate lives of the characters on our old, boxy PCs in the early-2000s and occasionally, accidentally set things on fire.
We reported in March that a film based on The Sims was in the works, with Loki-director Kate Herron helming it and Margot Robbie producing through her LuckyChap banner. Now, Puck News (via Dark Horizons) is reporting that the film has found a home with Amazon MGM.
Screen Rant mentions that Netflix’s bid for the film’s rights was higher, but Amazon MGM ultimately won by promising the film a theatrical release.

Right now, when audiences hear about an upcoming live-action adaptation, they automatically assume it will be bad. After the fiasco of The Cats movie and a whole slew of questionable Netflix series based on famous anime, people are wary of any other attempt.
But the upcoming live adaptation of the iconic musical Wicked is changing people's minds with just a few trailers. And Wicked isn't the only time the live-action version has treated the original with enough love and respect to turn it into something great. Here are 8 other live-action movies you might want to check out.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)

Things have begun to pick up at the summer box office, and three new wide releases will try to keep things rolling along. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big movie this weekend is the latest from director John Krasinski, once again teaming with Paramount Pictures for his family film “If,” starring Ryan Reynolds. “If” stands for “Imaginary Friends” – not to be confused with the recent horror movie “Imaginary” – although this is a family-friendly version of the same general concept, about a little girl named Bea (played by Cailey Fleming) who begins working with Reynold’s character to help pair IFs who have been abandoned by their childhood friends with new kids.
Following his run on “The Office” and directing a couple of indies, Krasinski directed “A Quiet Place” for Paramount in 2018, which opened with $50.2 million and went onto gross $188 million domestic and $334 million globally, based on a $17 million budget.

Lucasfilm unveiled the teaser trailer for its “four-piece” animated special, “Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy” (streaming September 13 on Disney+), where the entire galaxy gets completely mixed up, reversing good and evil.
From showrunners and executive producers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, “Rebuild the Galaxy” concerns nerf-herder Sig Greebling (Gaten Matarazzo), who unearths a powerful artifact called The Cornerstone from a hidden Jedi temple, forcing him to rebuild the twisted galaxy.
The Lucasfilm mashup of Lego sets includes Ewok bounty hunters, Geonosian Jedi, and even Darth Jar Jar. They also snap together Imperial X-fighters, Rebel Tie-wings, and the Dark Falcon.
“Rebuild the Galaxy” marks the 25th year in the ongoing collaboration between Lucasfilm and the Lego Group. A teaser poster has also been released, featuring the “Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy” logo, a starfield comprised of Lego studs, and the Cornerstone.

Disney+ has shared the first teaser trailer for its new "four-piece" animated special, Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy.
Jar Jar Binks remains a divisive character among fans and it's long been theorised (jokingly...we think) that the Gungan was secretly a villain who set out to destroy the Galaxy. That's led to the "Darth Jar Jar" meme which this project is leaning into by finally introducing that version of a character who first debuted way back in 1999's The Phantom Menace.

Five years ago, the idea of discussing the best video game adaptations ever felt like a largely joyless task. Inevitably, you would have to lower the bar to allow room for movies and shows that you would never otherwise discuss in a positive light. There were a few genuine highlights even back then, but the perception that the majority of video game adaptations were quite bad was both widespread and largely accurate.
The situation has changed in truly remarkable ways in recent years, though. We now regularly receive video game adaptations that aren’t just good according to the standards of that criteria but are rather genuinely great movies and TV shows. Suddenly, there is a genuinely complicated discussion to be had about the best video game adaptation ever.
Before we dive into that topic, though, keep in mind that we’re limiting ourselves to movies and TV shows based on video games.

Having sported different hairstyles and colors throughout her career, it’s safe to say that Rita Ora is a true hair chameleon. Given how frequently she switches up her hairstyles, it’s not surprising that she even developed a haircare line to maintain the health of her hair.
With the launch of her haircare line, Typebea, which is said to promote hair growth and health, the singer-songwriter, actor, brand ambassador, and philanthropist is adding beauty brand founder to her already impressive resume.
She’s been everywhere these days promoting Typebea (pronounced Type B). Just recently, she celebrated the London launch of her new brand, which she co-founded with Vida Glow founder Anna Lahey.

Last month, non-profit group Good Energy launched what it called a Bechdel Test for Climate Change, a simple set of criteria designed to determine if it was clear climate change was present in a film. The real Allison Bechdel even endorsed it.
As part of the “Climate Reality Check,” just three movies nominated for Oscars this year passed the test’s two simple rules: “Climate change exists” and “a character knows it.” Now a more extensive study published by Good Energy and Colby College’s Buck Lab for Climate and Environment has analyzed 250 of the top grossing movies between 2013 and 2022 under the same criteria.
Global warming has been with us for a while now, but only 12.8 percent — 32 of the 250 films studied in that time span — even passed the first criteria saying that climate change exists. Only 24 films, or 9.6 percent, passed both criteria of the test.

One of the core components of a video game is the cast that has been put behind the in-game characters. Not only do they give their voice to the character, but ultimately bring it to life making the experience worthwhile. While popular franchises, such as Final Fantasy are known for sticking with renowned actors to voice their characters, their one decision has proved to be for the worse according to their player base.
Final Fantasy cast Tyler Hoechlin for the role of Sephiroth in the games
The character of Sephiroth has always been an iconic one and was voiced by George Newbern before the year 2020. Newbern’s voice was unfortunately retired 4 years ago, and the replacement was none other than Tyler Hoechlin, an actor known for his work as Superman in CW’s Superman and Lois.

Fallout has been receiving praise left and right ever since the first episode premiered. Based on the successful video game of the same name, it is already a critically acclaimed show. Only days after its release, there have been numerous fans acknowledging every aspect including the acting. Understanding adaptations and perfecting them leads to a quality final product.
Ella Purnell in Fallout
In the past, the response to games being adapted, especially into live-action, has been almost bittersweet. With the exception of The Last of Us, Detective Pikachu, and a few more, the response hasn’t been as great as one would hope. Fallout is here to break that cycle.

Adapting darker tones takes a certain level of indulgence in the dark and gloomy as well.

Knives Out has become iconic in many different ways. Not only did its cast break the internet, but its approach to the whodunit genre was so unique and intriguing that fans could not help but fawn over its genius. As if Daniel Craig playing the role of Benoit Blanc wasn’t enough, the cast also includes Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Michael Shannon.
Knives Out
The mystery genre has been around for a very long time, which has made it quite difficult to do something new. Everything has already been done and every twist has been turned far too many times. When something becomes this familiar to audiences, many filmmakers and creators draw inspiration from preexisting works to get what they think are the best parts and make something new.

‘The American Society of Magical Negroes’ Star Justice Smith on His Bold New Film, D&d and PokemonGo
Upon his 2013 graduation from the Orange County School of the Arts, Justice Smith assumed he would spend some time “waiting tables and doing small roles in indie films here and there.” Instead, he found himself working the blockbuster space fairly quickly, booking roles in “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and its sequel “Jurassic World Dominion.” He stood out opposite a fuzzy creature voiced by Ryan Reynolds in “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” and as a half-elf sorcerer in “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”
Though it was a crash course in big-budget filmmaking, the 28-year-old actor notes that he wouldn’t have had it any other way. “I’m blessed because those experiences were also highly technical environments that challenged me,” he says. “It strengthened my ability and gave me a more well-rounded arsenal of tools. While doing the thing I love.”

Jack Black does comedy like few other actors can, both onscreen and offscreen. His latest stint comes by way of his universally acclaimed portrayal of Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which starred Anya-Taylor Joy and Chris Pratt.
Jack Black as Bowser singing Peaches
‘Peaches‘ is one of the songs that Bowser sings for Peaches, whom he kidnaps, prompting Mario to rescue her again and again in Mario’s story. However, despite being widely well-received by fans of the film, the actor, and the character, the song failed to secure a nomination at the Academy Awards, much to the actor’s hilarious charging. Not only did this get a reaction from Black, but he also used this to discuss his ideas for a possible Super Mario Bros. sequel.

Kathryn Newton is inevitably one of the best actresses of this generation. Yet, her recent onscreen performances aren’t quite catching fire at box offices the same way they did before. Just like how her Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) managed to gross almost thrice its budget, her recent Ant-Man 3 failed to land the mark and ended with a disappointing box office run.
Kathryn Newton in The Society
As it seems, that losing box-office streak of hers isn’t dying down easily. This comes after her most recent movie Lisa Frankenstein suffered a devastating blow at the worldwide box office to end its run with a gross even less than its budget. Despite this, her fans still have high hopes for this film, even predicting that it would go on to become a cult classic following its release on streaming.

After this trailer, you'll likely never look at childhood nostalgia the same way ever again. A24 has all but cornered the market these days on distributing original horror movies that feel of a piece with one another, leading an entire generation of moviegoers to think of the studio in the same terms as Marvel movies -- as a brand in and of itself, remarkably enough. Marketing prowess aside, however, many filmmakers have managed to take full advantage of this creative partnership and get eyeballs on fascinating movies that otherwise might've slid underneath most audiences' radars. Next up is one of the year's most daring and creative productions yet: "I Saw the TV Glow."
Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun, this marks the non-binary filmmaker's newest effort after 2021's "We're All Going to the World's Fair," a feature debut that immediately put their name on the map for good. "I Saw the TV Glow...

Last year’s R.L. Stine-based Disney+ series “Goosebumps” will return for Season 2, we’ve learned this weekend, but the cast and setting will be switched up this time around.
Variety reports, “The announcement was made during the Disney Branded Television presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. As part of the announcement, it was also revealed that the second season would be eight episodes compared to the 10-episode first season, and that the show is going the anthology route. Thus, Season 2 will feature an entirely new cast and setting based on R.L. Stine’s iconic Scholastic book series.”
“Audiences everywhere fell in love with the series’ chills, thrills, heart and humor, making it one of Disney Branded Television’s most-watched shows of last year,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to dive deeper into the brilliant mind of R.L.

The classic Kaiju movie formula may have been invented in America with flicks like King Kong and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, but at this point everyone’s aware that Japan is the one that perfected the genre. From Godzilla to Gamera, Japanese filmmakers have made these giant creature features part of their national identity, so it stands to reason that the west can’t quite keep up when it comes to traditional Kaiju movies.
Sure, we’re lucky enough to be living through a Kaiju renaissance with Legendary’s Monsterverse and the occasional dark horse like Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, but it’s really difficult for western cinema to capture the cheesy chaos of giant monsters wreaking havoc in densely populated urban environments. Thankfully, there are exceptions to this rule, and I’d argue that there’s one recent blockbuster that actually managed to reach the heights of...

Not many movies scare me anymore. Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow is one of them. It reduced me to a child, and brought me back to a dream I had of being strapped to a chair and forced to watch something with some unknowable power that is at once intoxicating and terrifying.
I Saw the TV Glow is Schoenbrun’s sophomore film after the micro-budget, experimental critical favorite We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. It is extremely slow, largely abstract, and entirely up to the viewer’s interpretation. With audiences and horror fans, it was controversial, and it seemed like your enjoyment of the film was equivalent to how much you put into it. It premiered at the online 2021 Sundance Film Festival in the Next category (a usually niche category that celebrates more experimental films), and was released in a very small theatrical run, followed by...

“Pokémon” fans have a new dream vacation spot: the tropical island resort in Netflix’s “Pokémon Concierge.”
The stop-motion animation series could be the most adorable show Netflix has ever made. Each Pokémon is meticulously crafted with fuzzy fur, smooth scales and friendly features that make you want to scoop them up and give them a hug. Twenty-nine different Pokémon pop up across four short episodes of “Concierge,” and it’s enough to make any fan of the video games, anime or trading cards instantly fall in love with the new setting.
The only downside to “Concierge” is that the four episodes are about 15 minutes each, but there’s enough Poké magic and vacation vibes to make you want to book a ticket to the Pokémon Resort immediately. New character Haru (voiced in English by Karen Fukuhara) is down on her luck and takes a last-minute trip to the resort for a relaxing getaway.

The screenplay to the 2014 mega-hit "Guardians of the Galaxy," the 10th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was credited to director James Gunn and longtime Hollywood screenwriter Nicole Perlman. Perlman also has story credits on the films "Captain Marvel" and "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and has previously been attached to a sequel to the 1986 Jim Henson film "Labyrinth," as well as film adaptations of the 1980s toy properties "Visionaries" and "M.A.S.K."
Perlman, according to an old article on the Marvel website, was recruited into the Marvel writing room way back in 2009 and was offered the opportunity to write a spec script for a "lesser" Marvel property as a test of her style and working capabilities. A Look at Video Game Movie Adaptations With Highest Box Office Success (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Video game movie adaptations, especially video games with large fanbases, have always been a touchy subject. The ‘physics’ of video games is different; translating all that action and storyline into a film is not the most straightforward task, and when you factor in the expectations of an entire fanbase — the whole ordeal becomes downright daunting. Luckily, video game adaptations have taken off in the past decade, especially on TV in 2023 — and quite successfully! Their box office numbers prove that.
But, as mentioned above, these movies are brutal, considering their more fantastical elements and ‘animation.’ The latest addition anticipated for success in this category is the upcoming Minecraft, scheduled to be released on April 4, 2025.
Minecraft has a star-studded cast, including Jason Momoa, Matt Berry, Danielle Brooks, and possibly Jack Black. Let’s just wait and see how it pans out.

Justice Smith’s career has taken him to the forefront of major Hollywood tentpoles such as “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu,” but it has never taken him to the Sundance Film Festival until now. Simone Ashley has picked the follow-up to her breakthrough performance as Kathani “Kate” Sharma in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, as Deadline reports that she has the lead role in the psychological thriller This Tempting Madness, which just wrapped production in Los Angeles.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery, who also wrote the screenplay with her husband Andrew M. Davis. Davis has a background in cinematography, including some work on the Sam Raimi-produced horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, so he lensed his wife’s first movie. Inspired by a true story, it sees Ashley taking on the role of a young woman who awakens from a coma grievously injured, memory fractured, her husband arrested. But as she puts together the pieces of her past, she starts to question her own actions — and her perception of reality.

"Pokémon" is the highest-grossing multimedia franchise ever. It is bigger than Star Wars, Marvel, or even Barbie. But no matter how much "Pokémon has tried to evolve with the years, through movies, games, TV shows, and merchandise, it tends to be kind of repetitive.
Ever since the first games, "Pokémon Red & Green" came out, the stories have followed a formula all about collecting the creatures known as Pokémon and making them fight in an endless loop. Only recently did we actually see Ash finally win the ultimate prize. Sure, we've seen spin-offs try different things, like the photo-taking game "Pokémon Snap," but those always felt like small, unconnected afterthoughts rather than part of the main world of "Pokémon."
Enter "Pokémon Concierge," the latest Pokémon series by Dwarf Studios and Netflix. This stop-motion anime is not only one of the best shows of 2023, and one of the biggest vibes shows in years,...

Ryan Reynolds is a Hollywood great!
After beginning his career on a teen soap opera, the Canadian-American actor came into our lives by the early ’00s with fan-favorite comedies like Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder and The Proposal, showing off his dramatic side in films like Buried, and taking charge in action flicks like Blade: Trinity.

The producers of F9, the ninth installment of Universal’s Fast & Furious movie franchise, have been fined $1 million after a stunt performer on the film suffered “life-changing” injuries.
FF9 Pictures Limited, a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, pleaded guilty to breaching the U.K.’s Health and Safety at Work Act last week at Luton Magistrates Court. District Judge Talwinder Buttar fined the company £800,000 ($1 million) and $18,600 in costs.
The prosecution stems from 2019 when stunt performer Joe Watts was severely injured during a stunt that went wrong and was thrown 25 feet onto a concrete floor.
