According to The Wrap, Yann Demange is no longer directing Blade for Marvel Studios. The report states that the director actually departed the project “a while ago and it was entirely amicable.” He’s the second director to exit Marvel’s Blade movie, as he was tapped to replace original director Bassam Tariq two years ago.
It’s been five years since the project was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con, and it’s been troubled ever since. In addition to the two directors, Blade has also been through its share of writers. Watchmen‘s Stacy Osei-Kuffour wrote the initial script, which was later rewritten by Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective), and Michael Green (Logan). The Wrap states that Eric Pearson (Fantastic Four) is currently working on the new script.

In the first episode of When They See Us, Ava DuVernay’s bleak drama about the Central Park Five, Linda Fairstein, then head of the sex crimes unit investigating the case, gives an order to dispatch an army of officers to Harlem. “Every young Black male who was in the park last night is a suspect in the rape of that woman who is fighting for her life right now,” says her character, played by Felicity Huffman. “You go into those projects, and you stop every little thug you see.”
Is that DuVernay leveraging broad artistic liberties under the First Amendment to make Fairstein the central villain in the miniseries, even though the ex-prosecutor might not have given that command? Or is it defamation?
In the acclaimed show, Fairstein is portrayed as the face of a crooked criminal justice system hell-bent on securing convictions against five Black and Latino teenagers...

“Feud: Bette and Joan” took the Emmys by storm in 2017, with the first season of the Ryan Murphy anthology show receiving rave reviews for its depiction of the rivalry between actresses Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange).
Season two will hope to match that Emmy success (more on that later) with its portrayal of Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) and his falling out with a group of New York high society socialites known as the Swans. Capote wrote a fictionalized account of the Swans’ dramatic lives, leading to the Swans vowing revenge for betraying their confidence.
The glossy show is typically gorgeous, scandalous, and theatrical while the performances are all top-drawer. Hollander dazzles in the lead role as Capote, which is no mean feat considering the late, great Philip Seymour-Hoffman won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn as Capote in 2005’s “Capote”). Richard Gadd's smash-hit series "Baby Reindeer" is exactly the kind of story that thrives on Netflix. Based on true events that happened to Gadd, the seven-episode drama has been one of the streamer's most discussed original offerings since its debut in April of 2024. Gadd plays a fictionalized version of himself, an aspiring comedian named Donny Dunn who is already failing to address his previous traumas when he meets a woman named Martha (Jessica Gunning), who proceeds to stalk him and the people close to him. "Baby Reindeer" is an adaptation of Gadd's award-winning one-man play that he performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2019, so it's not like this information or the way he, as a survivor, has elected to discuss it is new.
However, bringing the show to Netflix understandably put his story in front of the largest audience possible, and online sleuths who couldn't just respect the...

Netflix has been sued over its portrayal of a woman depicted as a stalker in Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer.
In a lawsuit filed on Thursday in California federal court, Fiona Harvey, who claims to be the inspiration behind Jessica Gunning’s Martha, accuses Netflix of defaming her through statements in the show that she’s a twice-convicted stalker who was sentenced to five years in prison for sexual assault. The streamer and showrunners “told these lies, and never stopped, because it was a better story than the truth, and better stories made money,” the complaint states.
The lawsuit, which seeks injunctive relief, seeks at least $120 million, including the streamer’s profits from the series. It brings claims for defamation, negligence and violations of right of publicity law.

The Scottish woman who claims to be the inspiration for Richard Gadd’s hit Netflix “Baby Reindeer” has sued the streamer, seeking monetary damages of at least $170 million.
Fiona Harvey has publicly said the character of Martha in “Baby Reindeer,” played by Jessica Gunning (pictured above), is based on her. She is suing Netflix, alleging defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and violations of her right of publicity.
The suit was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. Copy of Harvey’s complaint is at this link.
Harvey’s lawsuit alleges Netflix told “brutal lies” about her in the “Baby Reindeer” series.

Jharrel Jerome didn’t quite know what he was getting into when he received a somewhat cryptic email from filmmaker Boots Riley early one morning during the 2020 pandemic with the subject line “13-Foot-Tall Black Man in Oakland,” but it was enough to make him jump out of bed.
“For any actor to get a personal message from a director whom you admire saying, ‘I want you for a role,’ it’s a dream,” says Jerome, who plays Cootie in Riley’s fantastical series I’m a Virgo.
The actor was then two years removed from production on his Emmy Award-winning role as Korey Wise in Ava DuVernay’s 2019 Central Park Five miniseries When They See Us, and carefully weighing his options for his next part.
“I’m always looking. I’m just very selective, having been so blessed early on in my career and spoiled in a way with Moonlight and When They See Us,...

“13-foot tall Black Man in Oakland.”
That’s how “I’m a Virgo” creator Boots Riley pitched his latest show to actor Jharrel Jerome. “This is the wildest title to an email I’ve seen. I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Jerome tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. A week later, Riley was in his hotel room, with a briefcase painting a picture of how this show would look like – and he had mini figurines so Jerome could have a visual.
And yes, Jerome was concerned, he thought he’d be acting in front of a green screen all day long. But that wasn’t the case. Riley — who had the entire show mapped out in his mind, long before the streaming service was involved — wanted to do everything practical and in-camera. As part of that presentation, Riley showed how he’d use specific camera angles and...

Exclusive: Ava DuVernay had a lot to say in the Emmy-winning When They See Us about the harm heaped on the so-called Central Park 5. Now she is speaking out about the settlement she and Netflix reached with the former prosecutor in that travesty of justice.
“After years of legal wrangling and millions of dollars spent, [former prosecutor Linda Fairstein] walked away with no payment to her or her lawyers of any kind, rather than face cross examination before a New York jury as to her conduct and character,” the Array founder told Deadline today of the end of the four-year defamation suit that was set for trial to start on June 10. “I believe that Linda Fairstein was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of the Central Park Jogger case that resulted in the wrongful conviction of five innocent Black and Brown boys,” she bluntly said.
She added: “In the days leading up to her defamation trial,...

Linda Fairstein, the controversial former prosecutor involved in the Central Park Five case, has settled her defamation lawsuit against Netflix and Ava DuVernay over the 2019 docuseries “When They See Us.”
Fairstein sued in 2020, alleging that she was falsely portrayed as a racist villain who orchestrated the convictions of five innocent young men. The case was set to go to trial next week in federal court in Manhattan.
In the settlement, Netflix agreed to donate $1 million to the Innocence Project. Fairstein will not receive money.
Netflix also agreed to add this disclaimer to the front of the show: “While the motion picture is inspired by actual events and persons, certain characters, incidents, locations, dialogue, and names are fictionalized for the purposes of dramatization.”
Fairstein said in a statement that the litigation has revealed the truth about the case. She cited a judge’s ruling last fall denying Netflix’s motion for summary judgment,...

Netflix and Ava DuVernay have settled a lawsuit brought by a former New York City prosecutor who alleged she was defamed over her portrayal in When They See Us, a dramatized miniseries about the Central Park Five case.
Under the deal, Netflix will move a disclaimer that certain events in the series were dramatized from the credits to the beginning of each episode.
The agreement, announced Tuesday, arrives as the trial was scheduled to start next week.
In a statement, DuVernay said she wanted to take the case to trial. She stressed that the resolution Fairstein proposed involved a monetary payment and a disclaimer stating that everything about the ex-prosecutor in the series was fabricated.

(Updated with Linda Fairstein statement) Just days before Netflix and the former prosecutor of the unjustly imprisoned Central Park 5 were set to go to trial in New York over Ava DuVernay’s Emmy-winning When They See Us, the whole four-year long legal battle is over.
“The parties announce that they have resolved this lawsuit,” said the streamer, DuVernay, writer Attica Locke and ex-Assistant District Attorney Linda Fairstein in a joint statement today. Documents are being filed right now in court to end the matter. “Netflix will donate $1 million to the Innocence Project. Ms. Fairstein will not receive any money as part of this settlement.”
The trial was scheduled to start on June 10
Along with no compensation, Fairstein leaves the matter without the usual confidentially agreement and without any admission of fault on the defendants’ part, I hear. In a move that borders on ironic were it not so consequential, Netflix...

The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” could be the next big hit in the Best Limited Series category at this year’s Emmys, as this is a category that loves true crime miniseries. This one documents the harrowing murder of Reene Virk as police officers try to solve the case and a writer (Rebecca Godfrey) is drawn into the hidden world of those accused of murdering Virk. The series is based on Godfrey’s own book of the same name with “Daisy Jones & the Six” star Riley Keough, who also produces, portraying her. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” Best Actress Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone features as the police officer investigating the case.
This eight-episode miniseries, like any true crime series, is a tough watch at times but that makes it all the more vital. Meanwhile, the performances of Keough, Gladstone, and the teen-centric cast are all exquisite, as noted by critics.

The 2024 Netflix series, Deliver Me, really brings back memories of When They See Us, doesn’t it? Both shows dive deep into the devastating consequences of being wrongly accused. In Deliver Me, we follow the intense journey of two teenage boys, Douglas and Bilal. These boys find themselves caught up in a gang led by Mehdi Bah. We’ve seen this heartbreaking story play out before in movies and shows. Teenagers get tangled up in dangerous situations, often because of family pressures or to protect loved ones. Once they’re in, it’s nearly impossible to get out. Now tragedy strikes when Bilal gets killed. Now, the burning question on everyone’s mind is: Who killed Bilal? Was it Mehdi, the gang leader, or could it have been someone else? The mystery is on, and Officer Farid is here to find out the truth, as are we.

True crime genre is getting more and more popular each day and there’s no secret why: gripping stories about things that seem impossible in real life. However, what makes them even more exciting for the viewers is the fact that what is shown on screen has actually happened in reality, and that just makes people lose their minds.
One of the recently released true crime dramas is Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. The miniseries tells the gripping story of the performer Richard Gadd, who at his young age was harassed by a female stalker.
The story is powerful and already got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but here we have 5 more jaw-dropping series that follow real-life terrifying stories.
1. When They See Us (2019)
When They See Us is just 3% short of a perfect score, but that means nothing in this case because the series is considered the best true crime of all time.

“We’re very happy to be partnering with the team at Dark Sky who know and love the power of genre cinema like we do,” said the Bloomquist brothers. “As the chaos of modern politics rages, The Founder is primed and ready to be unleashed on American audiences.”

The hit Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady” showcases Sandra Oh and Awkwafina by giving each a chance to play against type. They’re a pair of sisters forced to compete on a game show to pay off their mother’s gambling debts. Awkwafina is the quiet, reserved Anne while Oh featured is the wild and crazy Jenny. Oh delivers a pitch-perfect performance and critics showered her with praise.
Marya E. Gates (Roger Ebert) proclaimed: “The film works largely thanks to the irrepressible charm of star Sandra Oh… Oh, on the other hand, is clearly having a blast playing this hot mess. She nails her pratfalls and plays the comedy as broad as possible with aplomb. However, Oh can also find the hurt, love, and complexity beneath Jenny’s superfluous surface.”
Kristy Puchko (Mashable) observed: “From the moment she storms onscreen, Oh is game to go outrageous… Often mesmerizing for her electrifying screen presence,...

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. “True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

Donald Trump has embraced fascist rhetoric and made bald declarations of his desire for dictatorial powers as he seeks a return to the White House in 2024. This is not politics as usual. The inflammatory language puts Trump a world apart from any presumptive, major-party nominee in modern American memory. And it’s getting worse.
In May, Trump’s account on Truth Social posted a campaign-style ad that flashed imagined scenes of the nation following a Trump victory in November. Using a German word for “empire,” unambiguously linked to Hitler, the video foreshadowed a “Unified Reich.

The network has given a straight-to-series order to his Doctor Odyssey, with Joshua Jackson set to play the lead and executive produce. The drama, targeted for a fall launch, hails from 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.
As is the case with any Ryan Murphy series, no details about the premise are being revealed. As the title suggests, Doctor Odyssey is believed to be a medical procedural. Having trouble predicting who will win Best Movie/Limited Actor at the 2024 Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their first set of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to either Jon Hamm (“Fargo”) or Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs. the Swans”). On January 24, by unanimous vote, Congress did something good for documentary filmmakers. It passed the Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying Act (aka the Press Act). It’s a journalist-protection bill, but could easily have been called the Protect All Documentarians Act.
Press makes no mention of documentary filmmakers because they’re presumed: Federal courts uniformly include documentary filmmakers in their definitions of journalists. However, documentarians stand to be one of the bill’s biggest beneficiaries.
The Press Act prohibits the federal government from compelling documentary filmmakers to turn over their outtakes except in limited circumstances such as preventing terrorism or imminent violence. This bill protects source-identity information along with records, contents of communication, or information obtained or made in the course of work.
Notably, this would prevent technology providers from spying on documentarians with express restrictions on using phone, email, or other telecommunications providers to access a journalist’s communications.

When “Grey’s Anatomy” viewers last saw Jessica Capshaw as Arizona Robbins — at the end of the ABC drama’s 14th season — she was moving to New York City so her daughter Sofia could be with both of her parents. But at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena on Saturday, ABC announced that Capshaw will be among the show’s Season 20 guest stars and will appear on one episode.
Alex Landi, who’s appeared as orthopedic surgeon Nico Kim since Season 15, will also return to the show as a guest star.
Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares (“When They See Us”), meanwhile, will make their “Grey’s Anatomy” debuts. Morales will play Monica Beltran, who, according to her character description, is “a pediatric surgeon whose pragmatism and level-headedness have made her one of the best in her field.” And Miyares will be among the recurring cast as Dorian, who is “an intelligent,...

Jessica Capshaw is checking back into Grey Sloan.
The actress, who spent 10 seasons playing Dr. Arizona Robbins from 2009-2018, is returning to reprise her role in the upcoming 20th season of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. Capshaw will be joined by Alex Landi, who returns as Dr. Nico Kim, and franchise newcomers Natalie Morales and Freddy Miyares as guest stars in the milestone season of the Shonda Rhimes-produced medical drama. Additional guest stars are expected to be announced as the show inches closer toward its strikes-delayed return on March 14 at 9 p.m.
Capshaw exited Grey’s in 2018, at the end of its 14th season when Arizona moved from Seattle to New York so her daughter, Sofia, could be in the same city with her other mother, Callie (former series regular Sara Ramirez), as the fan-favorite former couple “Calzona” appeared poised for a reunion.

Exclusive: Veteran talent manager and producer Lori Kay has parted ways with NYC-based production entity Fp to relaunch Prevail Artist Entertainment, a talent management and production company she initially established in 2015.
The move came following Kay’s reevaluation of her approach to her business amidst last year’s double strike, and as she dives more fully into producing. Relaunching Prevail will mean a return to a more focused and hands-on approach to client relations and, Kay says, “truly feels like coming home.”
In Kay’s absence, Fp’s primary production division Framework Productions will continue forward, with founder and CEO Steven Pierce at the helm alongside Head of Production James Allerdyce. The company’s recently established talent division Fp Artists, though, which Kay had been tasked with heading up, will be dissolved.
