Kobi Libii’s work on the sadly short-lived Comedy Central show “The Opposition with Jordan Klepper” always tended toward the confrontational. By donning the guise of right-wing media provocateurs, he highlighted the absurd internal contradictions of ideological hardliners.

Jordan Klepper is used to playing either the correspondent with “distanced irony” on “The Daily Show,” or the “satirical bad guy” on “The Opposition.” But for his new self-titled Comedy Central show, Klepper decided to do away with personas.
In this new series, Klepper follows a pro-gun control organization in Texas in one episode, while in another, he meets undocumented students running an underground university in Georgia. Given the serious nature of those subjects, Klepper knows it’s probably for the best that he cut back on “telling d— jokes” or saying the “most obxnoxious, ironic” thing possible as a reflex.
Here, Klepper speaks with Variety about the format of his new show, getting arrested and asking Hillary Clinton to read the Mueller report out loud.

Talk about a reversal of fortunes: While the movie box office world recovered this summer after a disappointing 2017, television — at least the programming that’s measured by Nielsen ratings — took a dip. Blame some of that on the lack of “Game of Thrones,” which dominated last summer among adults 18-49.
NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” still scored plenty of eyeballs, as once again the summer’s most-watched program. But Simon Cowell and company were still down to 14.56 million viewers, vs. 15.28 million last year.
IndieWire has compiled the summer 2018 rankings for broadcast and cable, using the most recent Live+7 ratings (which include seven days’ worth of DVR and video on-demand usage). Here’s a final look at some of the hits and misses of the summer, followed by our complete list of the most-watched shows of June/July/August, according to both adults 18-49 and total viewers.

On Thursday’s episode of “The Opposition With Jordan Klepper,” citizen journalist Laura Grey took a page from Jeanine Pirro’s playbook and lobbied Donald Trump for a new job as first daughter.
During a segment in which Grey defended Fox News personality Pirro’s fitness to replace Jeff Sessions as Attorney General — Politico reports she has been lobbying for the job — Grey noted all the ways Pirro has criticized and condemned Sessions. Then she turned her attention to Ivanka Trump.
“Can Sessions and hire Pirro. And while we’re here, Ivanka is doing a terrible job as your daughter! You need someone more qualified. Wink,” Grey said, while awkwardly winking directly into the camera.

At that point Klepper pointed out that Trump’s daughter isn’t a job someone can steal. “Oh yeah?...

Comedy Central has canceled “The Opposition” after one season — but they’ve ordered a new Jordan Klepper series. This one will be a weekly primetime show.
“We are excited to announce ‘Klepper,’ a new, primetime weekly series created by and starring Jordan Klepper,” Comedy Central said on Friday. “The new series will premiere in early 2019 with production beginning in July. Accordingly, production on ‘The Opposition’ will cease after its June 28 episode. We thank the cast and crew of ‘The Opposition’ for their incredible efforts in creating such a bold, provocative show and look forward to the launch of Jordan’s new primetime series next year.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of the hard working, creative staff of ‘The Opposition’ who tirelessly filtered the world through the chaos of America’s fringe,” Klepper added. “This staff is remarkable. Moving forward, I will be leaving ‘The Opposition’s’ paranoid Jordan Klepper character behind.

Trump can count on the pretend right-wing pundit vote after his announcement yesterday that he is pulling the United States out of the nuclear deal with Iran brokered by the Obama Administration. On Wednesday’s episode of “The Opposition With Jordan Klepper,” “citizen journalist” Tim Baltz explained that it’s actually a brilliant plan he calls the “hold my beer” strategy.
First acknowledging that “Obama created the nuclear deal by pressuring Iran through sanctions to come to the table,” Baltz said that “Trump will make a nuclear deal by pressuring Iran through sanctions to come to the table.”

“So strong,” said host Jordan Klepper, “but it does seem kind of similar.”
“We’re in a way better position,” Baltz countered. “Now we have zero allies supporting us. So America will get all the credit when we achieve peace. Or war. Or whatever. It’s brilliant, Jordan. Hold my beer.”
Baltz then explained what he means: “‘Hold my beer’ is a tactic I learned in college. It’s the belief that, no matter what someone else did, you can do better, probably drunk and with zero experience.”
“Obama thought that he was soooo cool with this Iran deal, but Trump knows he can do it way better,” Baltz continued. “Trump’s like the guy at the party who saw someone cannonball into the pool, then climbed onto the roof and is all ‘I can make it, I swear.’ And now John Bolton and Mike Pompeo are chanting ‘jump jump jump.'”
So f— it, he’s jumping,” Baltz added.

On Wednesday night’s episode of “The Opposition With Jordan Klepper,” Jordan Klepper basically begged Hillary Clinton to remain involved with politics because it’s the only thing the Gop has left to win votes in a midterm election that is trending heavily Democratic.
In his “Just Between Us” segment, in which Klepper’s faux-right wing persona pretends to have a private conversation with like-minded conservatives, Klepper said “We need Hillary Clinton. She’s basically the whole Gop strategy for winning the midterms. Without her to crap on, our candidates have nothing to stand for.”

“Republicans have already given up on legislating this year and it’s only April,” Klepper said. “If there was no Joker in Gotham, Batman would just be some rich weirdo in a cape, masking it up with a boy acrobat he’s not even related to.”
“We need more Hillary, and we need more Hillary, quick,” Klepper continued. “Just seeing her name makes most people’s buttholes shiver.

“What do we do when Hillary isn’t relevant anymore?” Klepper asked. “Same thing I do when my therapist tells me to stop bringing up my ex-wife: talk about her anyway.”
“You bring out the worst in me,” Klepper joked about Clinton. “Which is my best feature.”

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and other late-night variety shows taped before Tuesday night's Roy Moore election defeat, so they couldn't say much about that issue. Fortunately, Donald Trump earlier in the day gave Colbert and other late-night hosts plenty to make fun of when he shot an insulting (and allegedly sexually offensive) tweet at New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

A war of words has begun between President Donald Trump and New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jordan Klepper were ready to offer their own insight during the opening monologues of their respective shows Tuesday night.
On Tuesday, Trump wrote a suggestive tweet, calling out the senator after Gillibrand urged for the president’s resignation. “Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer...

2017-12-08T07:01:55-08:00Tv Hosts Have Fun with Trump's Second-Place 'Person of the Year' Finish
Donald Trump said that he didn't want Time's Person of the Year cover anyway, so maybe the late-night TV jabs at him for coming in second in the contest don't sting too much. Both The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper, though, didn't hesitate to take some jabs at the president over the situation.

After it was revealed that Time magazine selected Donald Trump to be the runner-up for its Person of the Year issue, late-night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jordan Klepper took time during their Wednesday shows to mock the president coming in second for the coveted title, which went to the men and women speaking out against sexual harassment and assault, or, as Time dubbed them, "The Silence Breakers."
"But that's fine with Trump.
