It’s safe to say a lot of people had a lot of problems with the switch from HBO Max to Max, but there was at least one upside to the streaming shakeup. Now, it’s easier than ever to find the excellent queer stories floating around Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform.
During its lifespan, HBO Max never had an LGBTQ tag to filter its offerings and help subscribers find stories about the queer community more easily: a surprising move for a streamer named after the channel that brought us boundary-breaking works like “Six Feet Under” and the miniseries adaptation of “Angels in America.” That’s been remedied on Max, which features an “LGBTQ+ Voices” collection. You do have to scroll quite far down the homepage to find it in the collections carousel, but when you do, it makes searching for the queer films and shows on the streamer considerably easier.

Switzerland has won the Eurovision Song Contest.
Swiss entry Nemo stormed the contest with the song “The Code,” walking away with 591 points — a combination of a jury vote and public vote.
But during Nemo’s victory performance at the end of the four-hour show the singer accidentally dropped the microphone-shaped glass trophy, injuring their thumb in the process.
“I didn’t just break ‘The Code’ I also broke the trophy,” said Nemo during the press conference after the show, where their hand was wrapped in a bandage. “I broke my thumb as well. But I got a new [trophy] so I technically have two now.”
The non-binary singer — who is the first Swiss Eurovision winner since Celine Dion won in 1988 — was presented with the trophy by last year’s winner, Swedish singer Loreen.

Disney and the BBC really don’t want any spoilers revealed for today’s debut of the latest season of Doctor Who. Fair enough, but I’m here to tell you that you will hear some of the worst music ever in these opening episodes of Ncuti Gatwa’s hopefully long run as the famed Time Lord.
Crossing timelines and absent granddaughters aside, that’s the point.
Since Rwandan-born Gatwa’s debut in December last year, his Doctor Who has already flipped a lot of scripts on what the Tardis travelling Doctor is and should be. Yes, the Fifteenth Doctor is the first Black and the first openly Queer incarnation of the Gallifreyan since the iconic British series debuted in 1963, as well as the first person not born in the UK to play the Time Lord Both those representations are long overdue and wonderful, but the real thing about this...

The Guinness World Records once listed the BBC’s Doctor Who as the “most successful Science Fiction television series in the world,” and, in November 2023, the show turned an impressive 60 years old. Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was relaunched in 2005.
Despite its grand age, it’s not demonstrating any signs of slowing down.
Former showrunner Russell T Davies (fresh from his success with It’s A Sin) returns to the franchise following last year’s Christmas specials with fan-favorites David Tennant and Catherine Tate. With the 14th season — which, for the first time ever, will premiere simultaneously worldwide thanks to Disney+ (on Friday at 7 p.m.) — Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education and Barbie) officially becomes the newest incarnation of the errant Time Lord.
But, what about those who have already played the role of The Doctor (a.k.a. Doctor Who) over the past seven decades? Below is your 101 to all of the lead actors.

The world’s largest live music contest is back. The Eurovision Song Contest, a springboard to fame for some of the biggest acts in the world – legendary Swedish band Abba, or more recently, Italian glam rock band Måneskin, for example – will return to screens on Saturday, May 11, to do what it does best: providing the most eccentric performances Europe has to offer.
From perfectly garish outfits and heartfelt ballads to synchronized dance numbers and heavy metal guitar solos, the event is set to feature the wackiest of the continent’s music scene as thousands of fans flock to the Malmö Arena.
Sweden became host after its homegrown star Loreen triumphed last year in Liverpool, England.
But this year’s Contest – like in 2023, where Ukraine was forced to pass hosting privileges onto the U.K. – is one backdropped by war. However, the threat of mass boycott has not, to the outrage of some,...

When Ncuti Gatwa makes his first appearance as the 15th Doctor in the science-fiction series “Doctor Who,” he isn’t wearing any pants.
In a 60th-anniversary special released in December, the previous Doctor — played by series icon David Tennant — subverts the show’s long-standing practice of regeneration: Instead of simply transforming into the next Doctor, he literally splits in half, bringing Gatwa’s Doctor into the world alongside him. In the process, the two divide the clothes of Tennant’s Doctor between them, leaving Gatwa in nothing but a dress shirt and a pair of tighty-whities.
“Oh, my God, that first costume fitting!” Gatwa says, bursting into an infectious fit of laughter. It’s a frequent occurrence as he speaks with Variety on a chilly March day over lemon ginger tea at the Langham hotel in London. “I was like, ‘Are you joking?!’ They showed me a pair of [underwear] and...

Amusing, uplifting, and about as sugary and teeth-sabotaging as caramelized popcorn, The Beautiful Game celebrates the healing power of team sports for those who might feel pushed to society’s margins by misfortune or choice. Although prefaced with the vague assurance that it’s based on true stories, this comedy-drama by eminent British screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce (The Railway Man) and directed by Thea Sharrock (Wicked Little Letters) is a tidily assembled, happy-ending-hewing narrative package that revolves mostly around the fortunes of a half dozen unhoused men, competing for England in the Homeless World Cup.
Bill Nighy stars as the team’s manager, a former scout for major London football club West Ham, who takes the team to Rome, where he must also accommodate each player’s foibles and faults, including the arrogance of star striker Vinnie (Micheal Ward, of Empire of Light). After a short theatrical run in the U.

Eurovision organizers are swiftly “scrutinizing” the lyrics of Israel’s 2024 entry amidst question marks over their political nature.
The European Broadcasting Union (Ebu) said it is “in the process” of examining the lyrics to the song from Israeli performer Eden Golan titled ‘October Rain.’
Israeli broadcaster Kan has said it has no intention of changing the song even though there are still three weeks until the final submission date.
Political messages are forbidden from Eurovision and have led to songs being banned in the past such as Georgia’s 2009 entry.
The “October Rain” lyrics, which Kan confirmed are correct when they were leaked to the media earlier this week, include: “They were all good children, each one of them,” and, “There’s no air left to breathe,” along with a reference to “flowers,” an Israeli slang term for fallen soldiers.

The Ebu has been under pressure from detractors to ban the nation over the bombardment of Gaza in response to Hamas’ October 7 attacks.
Other signees include Scooter Braun, Boy George, Mayim Bialik, Haim Saban, Julianna Margulies, Sharon Osbourne and Debra Messing.
Punishing Israel would be an “inversion of justice,” the letter says. “Israel is fighting a war against a European Union-designated terrorist group that once again broke a ceasefire that day, and then went on to slaughter over 1,200 people,” it adds. “This current round of fighting is...

UK TV producers will be given the opportunity to pitch to helm the BBC’s Eurovision Song Contest coverage, Sports Personality of the Year (Spoty) awards and iconic kids show Blue Peter as the BBC unveils its next set of tenders.
When in-house producer BBC Studios was handed the greenlight to make shows for third parties in 2017, the BBC in return said it would tender its in-house shows and give the indie sector the opportunity to bid for them. The BBC retains the rights to shows even if it loses the tender, as was the case with the likes of The Proms coverage and quiz show Mastermind.
The BBC has put Blue Peter, Cardiff Singer of the World, the Eurovision Song Contest and Spoty coverage to the market and bids will open next month. If BBC in-house loses the tenders, the first Spoty produced by the winner would air later this year,...

Israel’s place at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest is under the microscope following a petition signed by more than 1,400 Finnish music industry professionals urging a ban due to alleged “war crimes.”
Echoing the state of play in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, the group says that local broadcaster Yle should threaten to pull Finland’s entry if the European Broadcasting Union (Ebu), which runs Eurovision, doesn’t take action. Signatories include Finnish artists Olavi Uusivirta, Paleface and Axel Ehnström, who represented Finland in Eurovision 2011 under the name Paradise Oskar. Icelandic musicians made similar demands to local network Rúv last month.
Lukas Korpelainen, the initiator of the petition, said to local paper Hufvudstadsbladet that “Israel violates human rights” and “we don’t think it’s okay for the country to be part of the Song Contest to polish its image.”
The Ebu has previously backed Israel, stating in December that...

The BBC has come under pressure to fire the UK’s Eurovision Song Contest entrant Olly Alexander after the Years & Years frontman signed a letter describing Israel as an “apartheid” state.
Alexander, who starred in 2021 hit series It’s a Sin, put his name to a letter from Lgbtqi+ action group Voices4 London on October 20, nearly two weeks after the Hamas attack on Israel sparked a conflict in Gaza.
The missive accused Israel of “genocide” in Gaza, arguing that the state’s “apartheid regime” was attempting to “ethnically cleanse the land.”
“We believe that standing in solidarity with Palestine is a queer issue. Oppression of all marginalised communities is rooted in the same violent structures – colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism,” it said.
Signed by more than 1,400 members of the queer community, the letter continued: “We strongly reject the argument that holding a pro-Palestine or anti-Zionist stance in any way promotes antisemitism. We...

Sixty years is but the blink of an eye for a time-traveler like The Doctor. But for a television series, a Diamond Anniversary is an extremely rare and impressive occurrence.
BBC’s Doctor Who recently celebrated such a milestone with three one-hour specials which, for the first time, streamed globally on Disney+.
Russell T Davies, fresh from his success on ’80s AIDS miniseries It’s a Sin, returned to the show he brought back so successfully to the BBC in 2005. Bolstering his team are returning producers Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson, as well as Jane Tranter, the woman who was instrumental in bringing back Doctor Who in 2005. Bad Wolf, the company founded by Tranter and Gardner in 2015, currently produces the show with BBC Studios.
Another big returning name return was David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and who also returned for the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Beloved by fans and audiences alike,...

Stephen Fry will use next week’s Channel 4 Alternative Christmas Message to call for British Jews to “stand upright and proud in who they are” in the face of “the greatest rise in anti-Jewish racism since records began.”
Fry, who will say he “never thought for a single second” he would have to worry about being Jewish in the UK, will deliver an intensely personal speech in the wake of the huge rise in antisemitism following Hamas’ brutal October 7 attack on Israel.
He will point to the 1350% rise in antisemitic attacks in Britain over the past two-and-a-half months – working out at roughly 50 per day – citing “shop windows smashed, Stars of David and swastikas daubed on walls of Jewish properties, synagogues, and cemeteries, and Jewish schools being forced to close.”

A string of high-profile figures from the entertainment world attended a march against antisemitism on the streets of London yesterday, in what is thought to be the biggest rally of its kind for nearly 90 years.
The likes of Maureen Lipman, Eddie Marsan and It’s a Sin star Tracy Ann-Oberman were at the march, which is reported to have attracted more than 100,000 people. Others who attended included former Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie Johnson, Countdown host Rachel Riley and comedian David Baddiel. Marsan, Baddiel and Riley were amongst those who addressed the crowds.
Organized by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), the rally took place to counter heightened concerns over antisemitism among Jewish communities in multiple European countries since the attack on October 7 by Hamas on Israel – which saw the kidnap of 200 civilians and killing of around 1,400 – and the war that has followed.

A raucous comedy from playwright Camilla Whitehill, “Big Mood” teams “Bridgerton” and “Derry Girls” alum Nicola Coughlan with ‘It’s a Sin’ star Lydia West to dive headlong into mental illness and friendship. Fremantle, heading global distribution, will showcase the project in Cannes as part of its Mipcom slate. The market kicks off Oct.16.
A divinely sardonic and captivating laugh riot, the upcoming Channel 4 series presents an earnest portrait of mania and biologically-induced despair in a world where mental health has been commodified and sanitized for ease of consumption. Whitehill manages a highly nuanced depiction of Coughlan’s Maggie, whose bipolar pendulum swings erratically, as she tries desperately to regain control of her fleeting agency while clinging tightly to longtime friend Eddie, played by West.
“We’ve done a lot of patting ourselves on the back as a society, saying, ‘We’re really facing mental health,’ but we’re not.

Nolly played Meg Richardson in the hit ITV soap Crossroads before she was abruptly axed at the height of the show’s success. With the boss’ words “all good things must come to an end” ringing in her ears, Gordon found herself thrown out of the show that was her life for almost 20 years. Her firing was front-page news.

Exclusive: Small Axe star Shaniqua Okwok has criticized The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama for paying lip service to anti-discrimination pledges after the prestigious UK drama school failed to say whether it disciplined a teacher accused of a “racist incident.”
Okwok, one of Royal Central’s most successful recent graduates, made a formal complaint against a teacher after they allegedly demanded that she embrace her “inherited trauma” and play a slave during an acting exercise in 2015.
Deadline can reveal that the complaint was upheld last year and Royal Central apologized to Okwok, but for confidentiality reasons, she was not told if the lecturer faced any consequences. The individual remains in post as a lecturer at the school, which boasts alumni including Judi Dench and Kit Harrington. The teacher did not respond to a request for comment.

Among the drama directors vying for an Emmy this January is Peter Hoar, the helmer behind the memorable episode from The Last of Us that starred Murray Bartlett (Frank) and Nick Offerman (Bill) as two men who fall in love far from the horrors of the Qz zone. Here, the director known for his work on The Umbrella Academy, It’s a Sin and The Last Kingdom looks back at his work on “Long, Long Time” and how he didn’t set out to make the world cry “uncontrollably.”
“But I did,” he added simply.
Deadline: You have directed genre dramas before. When you were hired for The Last of Us, were you told right away that that your episode wouldn’t involve any actual sci-fi/high-concept stuff?

Despite the accolades for “Long, Long Time,” the third episode in the debut season of HBO’s The Last of Us, it feels all the more important to note that the decision to veer off course from the apocalyptic narrative in the series’ third week was, at the time, considered a risk. “My episode was [planned as] episode four, which is less of a gamble, when you have it midseason,” explains director Peter Hoar. “But I think that it was such a bold choice that it actually helped the show.”
In the 75-minute departure from the harrowing journey taken by series protagonists Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), viewers are introduced to a character mentioned only in passing in the video game on which the dystopian thriller is based: survivalist Bill (Nick Offerman), who rescues a lost and hungry Frank (Murray Bartlett) from one of his traps. Over dinner and some Linda Ronstadt,...

James Hawes‘ Holocaust drama “One Life” will be the American Express Gala at the 67th BFI London Film Festival.
The film tells the true story of Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to WWII, rescued 669 children from the Nazis. Fifty years later, in 1988, Winton is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England. It’s not until a live television show “That’s Life” surprises him with the surviving children – now adults – seated all around him that he can finally make peace with the loss he had carried for five decades.
The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Lena Olin, Romola Garai, Alex Sharp, Marthe Keller, Jonathan Pryce and Helena Bonham-Carter.
Hawes said: “This film pretty much begins and ends in London and says so much about the people of this city, its heart and its history.
