Sing Street (2016)
Sing Street's the Band We Deserved
I watched this on St. Patrick's Day looking for something light and funny and this film was the perfect choice. The plot isn't exactly heavy/deep, but still manages to show how the main character responds to the obstacles in his life through positivity and music. Reading that, it sounds cheesy, but I loved the score so much that I had the soundtrack on repeat days after. Ferdia Walsh-Peelo plays the main, Conor, with a comedic flair that I want to see more in movies now -especially coming-of-age stories. My family and I thought he CARRIED the film. His other movie, CODA, is also a favorite of mine. His character's uniquely positive and strong in how he deals with his issues in both family and school. The cast's relatable and hilarious and the sets are iconic and, dare I say, meme-worthy. It's timeless, to be honest. My favorite scenes have to be the forming of their band. Jack Reynor (plays Brendan) and Mark McKenna (plays Eamon) stood out to me because of how their characters influenced Conor and encouraged him to grow. Lucy Boynton was great, too, but I actually thought her character brought the film down a bit towards the ending as it was underwhelming. Overall, I'd rate this a 7.5/10 🖤 For a light-hearted coming-of-age musical, I think they nailed a lot of things especially the 80s inspired musical score. It's the main reason why I love putting this movie on in the background so often. Give this a try, it's humor will surprise and stick with you.
Wild Cards (2024)
Max & Ellis for the Win!
I came upon this movie after seeing an edit about the leads and the plot from the trailer looked interesting enough, so I gave this a try. CW's not really known for releasing exemplary shows with amazing acting -at least not recently- but I thought that Vanessa Morgan and Giacomo Gianniotti had a cool dynamic going on in this Canadian series. Their characters aren't completely unique in terms of personality and personal trauma, but all of the detective/crime antics were fun to follow. Although it seems a little low-budget with the sets and acting, the crimes had some great twists and resolutions. The mains, Max and Ellis, did have good teamwork and the chemistry/tension came on naturally and didn't feel forced or awkward. Max As CW shows go, the script was definitely still cheesy and the cast -excluding Max and Ellis- could've been better, but I enjoyed watching it nonetheless and couldn't wait for the finale episode which had its own share of twists and scams. The show left off on a cliffhanger and it's torture now that I have to wait for the next season, but I'm just relieved it was renewed! Based on the first season, I'd rate this a 6.5/10 🖤
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
Amazing Addition to Planet of the Apes Franchise
Watched this film last night with my family and thought it was a great continuation of the franchise. The introduction was created the same as the previous ones and continued as if done by the same director/team making it more of a seamless experience. The CGI and special effects, in general, are amazing and meant to be seen on a big screen. Everything felt grand and Noa was a great main whose story -both tragic and uplifting- really carried Caesar's legacy all these generations later. I loved that they were able to capture the heaviness/sadness of tragedies, violence, the hopefulness, and humor as the past films. It felt as if we picked up where we left off. We didn't get all of the girl's (Nova) story, but her setup was done well and left things in the dark for later. You could really tell Nova was so lost and out of her element, so I'm curious as to what they'll do for her character because there's still a hostility and mystery to her. Personally loved Noa, Anaya, Raka, and especially Sylva and Proximus. The bad characters were so hardcore and bada** and every time they were on screen, I knew something juicy was about to come. The fighting sequences were realistic and the small details that paid homage to the past films and Caesar, himself, were nice to see after all these years. The window symbol, too, remains beautiful and powerful in its meaning and always gets me emotional because Caesar will always be missed for his strength, courage, and morality. I can't believe the war's ongoing, but I'm excited for where they take Noa -more than Nova- next. Owen Teague, for sure, did this franchise justice. The only thing I have to say's that I wanted more from the antagonist, one scene in particular towards the end felt really slow, and that I thought Soona's voice was a little out of place. I'm also not sure what to think of Nova because there seems to be a lot that's she's hiding. Overall, I'd rate this an 8/10 🖤 The end made me want to rewatch the other installments and will probably give this another watch as well.
Tarot (2024)
Horoscope Horror that Fell Flat
I thought that this film did amazing with introducing new evil characters in the horror universe. They were executed well in terms of makeup, costume, and acting and didn't have terrible CGI like I had anticipated. I could see similarities with some of my favorites like "The Conjuring" and the "Insidious" franchise which got me excited. The budget for this must've been good, too, because the sets/locations seem realistic. I liked seeing new people being casted, but their acting was questionable and the script didn't make it any better. Though I did laugh a few times -from clichés, predictableness, and bad acting- I was surprised to see that it's in the comedy genre because most of their humor fell flat. The plot and scares definitely got better as the movie progressed. Even though the story's predictable, I can see myself putting this on a lot largely due to how much I liked seeing the spirits in a "fever dream-like" light. I feel like they haven't been depicted that way recently. I've to admit that I'm really happy to see another film adaptation and that I might end up checking out the novel. In short, the horror aspect delivered... just not the script. I'd rate this a 6.5/10 🖤
Maxton Hall - Die Welt zwischen uns (2024)
SO FAR SO GOOD
So far... I LOVED S1! Compared to other films/series like "Culpa Mia" and "My Life with the Walter Boys", there weren't any parts I wanted to skip (from either boredom or cheesiness). I watched this with my sister and we were both immediately hooked. We came for the ATTRACTIVE cast (NEED to see Damian Hardung more), but stayed for the emotional rollercoaster. I didn't think I'd get emotional, too, but there were certain scenes that had me surprised at how great the actors -especially the mains- expressed their emotions. The plot seemed more genuine than others and THIS DREAMY CHEMISTRY between Damian and Harriet's too much. Favorite James and Ruby moment by far's the party dance scene (iykyk). I appreciate that, although it's in German, the drama, romance, and character depth (more complex than usual) wasn't lost in translation. Ruby and James' relationship was innocent and the way they fell in love (him falling first) -despite him coming from "old money" and her not so much- was gold. This isn't completely original, but I enjoyed it and didn't feel that it was a waste of time at all. I'm also a sucker for good soundtracks and this one was on point. I really loved Kieran, Lin, Alistair, and Lydia's personalities and thought they added a lot in terms of not "flattening" the quality. The enemies-to-lovers romance's done really well and I didn't want their story to end. Overall, I love how this series was filmed and will be rewatching because it's one of the best teen romances out right now. If only we had shows like this in the US. For now, I'd rate this a 9/10 🖤 and will be -not so patiently- waiting for the next season(s)!
