Sugar (2024)
Really good. Just watch the entire season.
Has a timeless quality of "Hollywood" past and present coexisting: the more things change the more they stay the same in a scintillating "noir is forever" kind of ambiance. Sugar is your classic private eye specializing in missing people. He's aware that seeing some evil people doing horrible stuff out there he wants to put some kindness out there to balance out the human suffering in this world. Amazing casting. Interesting cinematography angles. Beautiful color: whoever worked on that in post did a gorgeous job. Locations are quintessential Los Angeles. Cast of characters well done in leading up to seeing what happens in future episodes. Anyone upset that the entire mystery was not solved in the first episode: that's not how episodic mysteries work: give this racehorse time to circle the track. It's got a good story pacing building up for a first episode. Give it a chance. See it through to the last episode. Amy Ryan is amazing in this. That woman is a chameleon with her range of characters.
Palm Royale (2024)
Really great period mystery.
Really fun mystery that brings to life a long ago class war that still creates chaos for people ending up in gentrified swampland that is Florida. Some other reviewers were whining that this is confounding them if this series is a comedy or a drama when it's got components of both: but it's a mystery, a whodunnit that keeps you guessing. Not all the characters are good people but they're not the heroes you wanted but the heroes the story needed. The actors are amazing. The costumes are impeccable. The way that the society was back then is depicted concisely. If you're wanting something heavy and grim this is not the mystery series for you. If you want a fun mystery set as a historical piece that evokes the incredible Mr Ripley then this show is great. I'm loving this series. I want to see how it plays out. This is a fun cast. And I cannot respect anyone monstrous enough to criticize a project that carol Burnett is in.
Drive-Away Dolls (2024)
Really fun rom com
It's a fun romantic comedy about two friends on a road trip of escapism and self discovery. The subplot is the suspenseful thriller that a lot of disdainful reviewer were hoping to be the primary storyline. But it's a great study of lesbians in the nineties trying to find a decent place to get a drink across quintessential American nightlife. Very fun romantic road trip comedy with really excellent casting and foreshadowing.
Colman Domingo is perfect as a character that you don't know who to trust but he's not someone the protagonists want to be enemies with. Pedro Pascal is great as always. There's a cute little dog. Beanie Feldstein is hilarious. And it's one of the Coen Brothers so there's going to be some graphic violence for those people that enjoy that kind of on screen violence. It is a fun movie but not for kids.
Fool's Paradise (2023)
Best comedy of the decade.
It's influenced by Harpo Marx, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Gene Kelly and more. A lot of personal references to what Charlie Day experienced in the beginning of his career. Like one guy from his usual show is not in this but the other one is: if you know how one of the actual four co-creators of IASIP was ousted and how that happened it kind of alludes to that experience of being complicit to that karmic baggage of screwing someone over like that. Meanwhile his costars from Horrible Bosses: both of those guys are in this. Karma weighs people down on life but sometimes dumb luck and being a good listener and knowing when to keep quiet is what props some people up. And the character played by Common is actually right if also alluding to Walter in The Big Lebowski. So sane people are crazy and crazy people are sane. Whether it's politics or showbiz or healthcare in the USA or anything: it's all the same thing. "There will be blood" reference is genius.
The cast is amazing, the story is amazing, the intelligence of the comedy is amazing. It's a fun, lighthearted yet scathing comedy. It's fun yet I've seen this happen to people in Los Angeles. Very astute realism in how fast paced your life changes in the entertainment industry. The curtains in the gameshow scene: perfectly referencing those guys. The raw veganism references. The way agents dress. The lack of safety on set. Even a once upon a time in Hollywood moment. Just a different camera angle version of that reference.
Basically this is a genius, observant film that is relatable about life in Los Angeles that was not marketed well, not distributed widely and not understood by those ignorant of Hollywood history and how the entertainment industry and Los Angeles politics works. This movie was so intelligent and scathing that it went over the heads of people that shouldn't, wouldn't and couldn't handle a year living in Los Angeles. It's going to gain a cult classic following and be an audience favorite at the New Bev if that's still around decades from now. It's going to be on TCM one of these days and your kids are going to sit their asses down and have the audacity to ask you earnestly "how come this got such a low box office?" And you'll feel the irony of "well, it did a lot better in foreign distribution?" The movie predicted how it was going to be its own mosquito man.... Or is it mosquito boy?
You don't need money or fame or real gold or fools gold. All that glitters is not great. But who's your network? Who's really showing loyalty on your team? Are you the Jordan Reid getting thrown under the bus, screwed over by your team that's supposed to protect you and that's gone behind your back so that you're not getting that fourth desk? Considering the complicity of that betrayal seems to haunt Charlie Day. I don't see certain usual creative partners in this. It's about eventually realizing that friendship is above everything else and that's what is going to save your ass in this city and industry.
Also a real life doctor portraying a guy addicted to energy drinks is hilarious.
Dicks: The Musical (2023)
One of the best movie musicals ever.
Haters going to hate and those one star people might as well be rating their stinky attitudes: this is a fun, scandalous, titillating movie musical. It's like they might as well be complaining about some totally different movie. I love Megan thee stallion emulating Mae West. The entire experience was witty and amazing. The songs were well made. Amazing cast with gorgeous singing voices and perfect comedic timing. It was a good job translating a two person UCB show onto a cinematic experience. Don't want to see it or hate it? Go ahead: the rest of us who enjoy a good time are going to see this become a cult classic for future generations.
What If...?: What If... Hela Found the Ten Rings? (2023)
Some of y'all need therapy. Even MCU characters need therapy.
A lot of other reviewers were upset that a character had a redemption arc that exemplifies how being in the right place at the right time can create a spectrum of variations. How in one universe you could be the villain in someone else's hero arc but in another universe you're having your own hero protagonist story under those circumstances. The whole concept of a multiverse in either Marvel or DC reminds me of that Gwyneth Paltrow film "Sliding Doors." And that film was a romantic comedy/ sci fi drama about multiverses forking out from different decisions. Like the series and especially this episode shows what happens when people stop making bad choices and start maki g good choices. Basically Hela gets the therapy and friends that she actually needed in this universe that she could've used in the prime timeline.
A lot of the other reviewers probably hated ghostbusters 2016 as well if I was going to bet money on it. And I could probably raise enough money that way to run as a female candidate for president. That's how much I think a lot of those reviewers are upset about this episode. Anytime there is a female protagonist they come out screeching like angry howler monkeys. Like to them they act like female characters are only acceptable to them as attractive sidekicks or as attractive villainesses: never the protagonist and she has to be either supportful or defeated. In this episode it shows people making good choices regardless of their gender or subjugation in some kind of hierarchy. To paraphrase Taylor Swift these reviewers that hated this episode just need to relax.
History of the World: Part II (2023)
I'm so happy this finally got made.
This is one of the greatest shows ever. This is the reason why television was invented. All the reviewers that hated this show: how spoiled are you regarding a series when it has Wanda Sykes as Shirley Chisholm AND Harriet Tubman? Mel Brooks is doing the best that he can with the streaming studio executives that he's stuck working with at his age. Let's see any of these haters get green lit for their show ideas.
Also, this show is so educational that it's probably going to get banned in Florida and Texas and in states with any governors worried about how people might actually learn about history from this show. This show is if you don't want to let your kids watch Drunk History but you are okay with them hearing the F word.
It Started with a Kiss (1959)
Military personnel and their spouses treated awful by our government even then.
It's not just about a car. It shows a hardworking military service member and his wife getting treating with retaliation by their own government. It's depicts a congressman personally targeting one of his constituents because she's a woman. Nothing much has changed about the USA when you think about it.
Great cast of characters. Amazing time capsule of society back then that's still prevalent these days for many American families especially those serving in our military. It makes one realize how this foreshadows the lack of support our military gets from our government while one is in the service and then tossed back into civilian life where many become homeless or in poverty.
America: The Motion Picture (2021)
I'm offended by the severe lack of gratuitous violence.
It's too historically accurate and not enough violence. As an American I expect more from my Channing Tatum films.
Mrs. Brown's Boys (2011)
Makes me proud to be part Irish.
This series is available on Britbox and it's hilarious. That show is so amazing that it makes me proud to have Irish ancestry. This show is from Ireland, right?
