Ahsoka (2023)
Rebels Live Action
So much negativity here for Disney, ignore the doom sayers rhey are so far gone as to be irrelevant.
Bringing beloved cartoon charaacters to life is never going to be easy, there are some hits and some near misses. Sabine is nailed, her journey was somewhat surprirising and it is going to be great to see how her arc evolves. Ahsoka is an older version of that we have grown to love, she is more measured, contenplative and definitely less energetic... but brings the essence to life and i for one have loved Rasario's interpretation. The other characters are solid, The Magistrate is back and our two new non-Jedi antaganists are menacing and both bring something new to the franchise.
Episode two ends where Rebels ends, so we are all set up now for what i think will be one of ghe best Star Wars show in some time.
Exciting stuff.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
Hooked...
I'm halfway through the third episode and I'm hooked. I love the way they've gone, good pacing, great handling of an alien in Japan, it's been done a million times but this, genuinely feels different... Just the right amount of subtitles to bring you along for the ride.
I'm really excited to see how this will unfold.
The Boys: The Instant White-Hot Wild (2022)
What on earth did others watch?
So, for others here to not follow this finale and understand the dynamics is just, well odd. Sure, there's a narrative driven by the fact that we and the execs want a series 4 but this drove their choices it didn't destroy them.
Anyway, to each their own. I loved it, hope you ou did too.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part VI (2022)
Well I for one am happy.
Look this was obviously adapted from a film, it was drawn out in places. Had a TV budget and some average directing. BUT, and it's a big but the story works for me, I loved Leia, Vader is back, Kenobi wad amazing, Reva has an interesting arc and the character grew throughout. I think the Inquisitors needed to do more, especially at the start. Oh and let's not forget Luke's aunt and uncle.
The final episode brings everything together, I was crying at times and I haven't done that in a while.
Loved it.
The Guardians of Justice (2022)
Why isn't this being raved about?
Looking at the reviews here I'm a little perplexed. The styling in this show is astonishing, the story may not be the most original but it's a blast. Reminded me of Watchmen in quite a few ways.
Look, it doesn't follow the Marvel formula and I do love Marvel, but it's cute, different and just really good. I grew up reading 2000AD and comics were a huge part of my life for years, this is a genuine attempt at merging the formats and I think it works... brilliantly.
So, I'd advise ignoring the reviews and give this show a chance. If this isn't a cult classic in a few years, I'll pay someone to slap me 😇👍
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 7: In the Name of Honor (2022)
No surprises, no twists, no real point. A shame.
No surprises, no twists, no real point. A shame.
I have no idea why they make beskar such a game changer how did anyone ever fight the Mandalorians they are indestructible and Boba Fett hardly wears any... they need to downgrade it to add some jeopardy, I never felt concerned for any of the characters.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian (2022)
Not what I expected but WOW!
So, we jump this episode into a whole new world, literally and figuratively. I'm sure most people knew where this Episode was bound to start but I didn't expect it to last all of the longeat episode so far.
As the Episode builds we see a lot of foreshadowing for what is upcoming next year and then we're are back in familiar territory with an amazing nod to the prequels.
We end exactly where you'd expect, or so I thought; I'm left thinking what will we see next next episode... I think I know and we may be in for a climax after, that tops everything.
Not what I expected but a solid 10/10. All day.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 3: The Streets of Mos Espa (2022)
Shame, disappointing 60s retro
Sorry, but the Quadraphenia like youths on their bikes just isn't Star Wars. This coupled with some flat dialog and a poor chase scene is a low in what has been my favourite Star Wars in a while. Hope this is a blip, respect for trying something new. But in a surround fans know well it was misjudged.
Still it did move the Story but that was it.
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine (2022)
Tem giving it large
I know lots of people didn't like the flash backs in Episode 1 but this episode really fleshes out the changes we are seeing in Boba Fett. Tem brings it in this episode and the ending is so fitting. What a fantastic bit of TV, well done all. Loved it.
Loki: The Nexus Event (2021)
Better than last week... just
Well it was certainly better paced and the writing improved. I'm still struggling with the somewhat wooden acting, especially between the main protagonists. The fight scene was laughably bad and the surprises hilariously obvious. Still we watch in hope, but since the highs of Wandavision Marvel is digging it's own grave. Average, at best.
Loki: Lamentis (2021)
No Chemistry
I didn't buy into this episode at all.
It needed the two protagonists to really bounce off each other, neither the script or the actors were able to make this work. It just felt forced and honestly somewhat amateurish. How with this amount of money and quality of actors you manage to produce this mess is beyond me.
Distinctly average, gutted.
Free Solo (2018)
Wow, simply awe inspiring.
For those of you questioning some of the directors decisions, did you watch the same documentary? The story being told is about the human challenges Alex, the crew, his climbing partner and girlfriend all overcome to put this film front of us.
To diminish any part is to offer us less, to think there is no point to this is to never be inspired.
Loved it.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Victory and Death (2020)
Wow, just -&_#ing wow
Can't believe just how good these four episodes are, with this just a stunning finale. I've enjoyed S07 as a whole, but I never saw this quality coming. Honestly some of the best Star Wars you can dine and I include the film's. Go watch :-)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Bad Batch (2020)
Hey I'm too old to admit watching and living this, but...
It's simply the best Star Wars there is, if you have only just come aboard do yourself a favour and start at Series One Episode One. If not, like me and you've just jumped aboard the hype train again going to the happiness station... this episode is exactly what we all wanted.
Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
Stuck at the top of my Spidey list.
A genuinely enticing film. From the second you start watching it captures your attention then injects you with a massive dose of excitement. It builds and builds until at the end your drained and just give in to the warm embrace that is Far From Home. You'll love it.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 6: The Prisoner (2019)
Better,much better.
So, we still get hammy acting but with a more entertaining script. When they first come under fire I thought it was cheesy as, the faces and jeopardy faced was a little comical. However some great action take-dows from Mando and a tense scene with the guard improved things.
As we approach the end and things heat up and everything improves...
Oh and baby Yoda...
A big mprovement, great.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 4: Sanctuary (2019)
Great, but....
So, Mando E04 aka Seven Samurai rip. Seen this story so many times but still it's great. The monster AT ST visuals are fantastic and little BabY steals the show, especially in the Razercrest at the start. So, a little cliché but let's be honest this show is the Mandatrope but we love it... just buy as much as last week... A solid 7/10.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 3: The Sin (2019)
OMFG how can this be topped.
Look, check my reviews I enjoyed E01 was less enamered with E02 but this episode is simply stunning. The flow is amazing, the action breathtaking and the story expected but great.
Maybe the score didn't blow me away but I'm not going to quibble, an amazing 30 or so minutes.
Wow....
The Mandalorian: Chapter 2: The Child (2019)
He's an idiot...
**spoilers** Come on, this episode is silly. First he doesn't hide his ship, why didn't he fly it to the target last week instead of trying to ride that stupid beast? Then he walks into a hole, if anyone didn't see that shot of him flying out coming they need to get out more. Oh and he kills it with a tiny knife... still it's enjoyable enough if you don't think much.
Dredd (2012)
Watched it again today, it doesn't get old.
Such a great film, amazing pacing and great set pieces which perfectly capturethe feel of the comic characters distopian city. Amazing when you consider the production issues, Urban and Garland properly nailed it. Oh and Mama makes for a great "bad guy" with some real dark moments 10/10
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance: End. Begin. All the Same. (2019)
OMFG
Omg omg omg omg my eyes hurt... so good, so good. Thanks life, I'm done.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Beautiful to watch but poorly paced and too long
Think that summarises it. Look the plot has the odd nice twist and some of the jokes hit home but honestly three hours with this sort of pacing is a struggle. Think I'd have preferred to watch it at home.
Taskmaster (2015)
Sit Down
You have 45 minutes to spare and haven't laughed in years. Make me laugh little Alex Horn.
And laugh I did.
The Predator (2018)
It's not as bad as these reviews would have you believe.
Spolier Free:
Look it does break canon, have some editing issues and isn't the same as the rest but... it's funny, builds some characters has a plot (honest it does) and does the special effect thang well enough.
I'll get lynched for saying this. Let go of the past, let go and you'll enjoy it.
Zodiac (2007)
Boring, far too long
Like most people I have been captivated by the trailers and really looking forward to this film. I've now been to see it and I can't begin to understand how it is rated so highly.
OK, the acting is good, very good in fact, but the story just doesn't hold your interest and I knew nothing about the case prior to seeing the film. The film does build up to its ending but never delivers you leave the cinema reading the white on black text saying "well if you'd said that 2 hours ago I could have saved myself these really stiff joints".
Don't bother, not even on DVD.
